KSE: How would you describe JumpFromPaper to someone who isn't already familiar with it?

JFP: “Life does not need to be that serious. People are born to have fun!"

The story we would like to tell through “JumpFromPaper is always to challenge the existing reality and depict it in your own way.

With its tricky 2D appearances and hand-drawn designs, we tend to exploit unusual and funky exteriors that confuses and pleases people; while at the same time encourages an outside-the-box, imagination-has-no-boundaries philosophy.

We hope that JumpFromPaper can act as a medium for people to discover their whimsical personality, and for their imagination to go wild.

KSE: How do you find inspiration for your designs?

JFP: Everything and anything can be inspirational! We love cartoons, comic books, animations, and comedy manga, such as Super Radical Gag Family. These are all very popular in Asia and are all part of our inspirations for JumpFromPaper. While our cultural origin is not apparent in the bags, our mindsets and design concepts are often influenced by the local cultures. Taiwan is a small island where people embrace diversified cultures. All of these are interactive and help shape up our designs.

KSE: Do you have a favourite design so far?

JFP: I enjoy the differences between various types of JumpFromPaper designs. They are just like people varied by

by diverse personalities and styles. I appreciated the bizarre but naughtiness First Date stands for; the funkiness but vigorousness Bonjour! Bag says to people; the uniqueness Cheese! Has. The elegance and maturity Play Harder brings to me that is the must-have personality and stuck to my faith of “Work hard; Play hard.”

KSE: Any quick tips for aspiring designers?

JFP: We never know what a good idea or a brilliant design is. Any unique design could fail before it is proved successful in the market. Like the “Little Black Dress” It was reserved for mourning occasions and considered indecent when worn outside, until Coco Chanel launched the "Chanel's Ford." Most of the time, fashion or innovation is different from the current fad. What we do is trust ourselves and stick to what we believe. This might enhance the possibility for us to lead a trend or even invent an era. JumpFromPaper™ is a product of imagination; it is simple but unconventional. No matter what you wear, carrying a JumpFromPaper™ will definitely make you stand out in the crowd. It is an expressive product by which people could easily show their uniqueness and individual style. This is what we always try to deliver in our designs.

KSE: What are your favourite parts of being handbag superstars?

JFP: Superstar is always a name somebody else gives to you, it is never the true you or definite in what the real “YOU” is.

For us, so long as we could keep drawing, drawing things we really love and have a passion for rather than being a flash in the pan.

Therefore, we aim to remain modest and learn from our customers. This helps us to keep our brand moving forward. That's how we developed and extended our ideas. We listened to what customers needs and pushed ourselves to do better. We will keep on working and listening in order to create more and more good designs.

KSE: What have been your highlights so far for JumpFromPaper?

JFP: It is just like how JumpFromPaper looked like: standing for a passion to make laughs and we start from making fun of ourselves, and go on making things amusing and entertaining. Filled with all sorts of quaint fantasy, we are always engaged in hunting for new inspirations in everyday life.

KSE: If you could collaborate with another designer who would it be and why?

JFP: Design Duo, Chay Su and Rika Lin would want to collaborate with people who enjoy life and are as energetic and quaint as they are which will definitely facilitate more fun and crazy possibilities! But also we would like to interact with people who are completely opposite to this style, stern, well-regulated, and stiff, which would create a great contradiction to our designs.

KSE: What can we expect to see from the wonders that are JumpFromPaper in the near future?

JFP: We are continuously making efforts in both design development and improvement on current styles. Both of us are full of crazy ideas all the time, new styles and

Page 9: Kindred sole edition fashion magazine issue 9

new lines of products are constantly flying around. Humour is always the “must” design element, because we hope to create something that could bring surprise and giggles to people's lives. JumpFromPaper will continue to release new styles, new lines of products every once in awhile. We don’t set limits, stay tuned, anything can happen! We hope to see people all over the world happily enjoying their journey with their JumpFromPaper bags, We are always having our ideas flying around, and new styles, new lines of products...nothing is impossible. Everything could happen, and we don't set limits! ;)

KSE: How would you describe your personal styles?

JFP: Since we majored in communication design in college, we love hunting for new possibilities in life. We are constantly employing design as the medium to realize our crazy imagination into realness.

The style we aim to have is “WOW” It might sometimes look dumped together or amusing but it is something that is never forgotten for sure!

For us, style is always something personal and unique and varies from person to person. As long as it looks great and fits with your life we’re smiling!

Page 10: Kindred sole edition fashion magazine issue 9

KSE Says: Ladies and Gents, if you are looking for a handbag that has bucket loads of style, attitude and quirky design elements you really don’t need to look any further than Jump From Paper. Style Warning: Please be aware that whilst wearing your uber stylish Jump From Paper handbag you will receive many admiring glances and a few OMG is that a real life handbag?! Choose from plenty of gorgeous designs each with their own unique personality. In fact there's one for every mood! We particularly love “Bonjour!” (feat to the left) “First Date” (Hello pretty in pink!) And “Play Harder” for a more androgynous take on the style! Rimmel 9-in-1 BB Cream: I could not resist giving this product a try! After all it promises to prime, moisturise,

minimise pores, conceal, cover, smooth, mattify, brighten and help protect all for £6.99! Available in light and

medium tones with SPF25.

8/10: "Texture is great, it's quite thick and not too oily so you can achieve a variety of coverage from light to

medium. I'd recommend applying this with your fingers rather than a brush. Overall, it was a good all in one

beauty product. The only area where it didn't meet the grade was with moisturising (highlighted dry patches). So

I tried it again after using another moisturiser (L'oreal Triple Active Fresh) and the look was flawless. Would

recommend to those with combination to oily skin."

Rimmel Scandaleyes Waterproof Mascara: Described as 'For lashes so big, it's criminal' I had to give it a try! Available only in black and £6.99. 9/10: "I loved the wand of this mascara. It's quite big which I've found to be quite hard to use with other brands but because the packaging is so chunky, it is easy to handle. It definitely lengthens and thickens your eyelashes. Even though it is waterproof I found it does come off easily with eye makeup remover. I would recommend to those who like their eyes to be the focal point of their makeup regime.".

Neutral Nail Paint Set

£12.99 Inc VAT

Super glossy, chip resistant, quick drying nail paints are highly pigmented and so easy to apply thanks to the flat brush. This set includes SILVA (mushroom), HELGA (antique grey) & ARMINEH (nude beige)

Carolyn K London cosmetics are 100% British and are not tested on animals. These beauty buys really are beauty without the beast. The brand works hard to give back to charity with even a percentage of the sales going to Magic Breakfast. This is a charity that provides breakfast for children in the UK whose family cannot afford to feed them every morning.

10/10: "I decided to try out Carolyn K London 'Armineh' from the Neutral Nail Paint Set. It's a great nude colour for summer. The benefits are great for my lifestyle: chip resistant, quick drying and infused with Pro Vitamin B5 for stronger, healthier nails. It is recommended to apply a base coat, two coats of Carolyn K London Armineh and a shiny top coat. The results are fantastic! And I have to say the applicator brush is one of the best I've used as it is quite wide which is essential for a nail polish which promotes itself as being quick dry. I'm now on day 3 of wearing this colour and there is not one chip - this is a revelation for me! Above are images taken on @kindredsole Instagram. I also uploaded them onto @kindredsole Twitter. The response was great with people commenting on how great the colour is! Everyone needs to go out and get themselves at least a couple of Carolyn K London nail polishes. I promise you will not regret it! I'm looking forward to trying the 'Silva' shade next!

Start-up: a story launch event in the Houses of Parliament

Start-up: a story celebrates graduates who are turning their business idea into reality. Their stories give a rich insight into the realities of starting up and the important contribution of our graduates and universities to society and the economy. With economic growth high on the national agenda and employment rates under scrutiny, universities and their graduates have a central role to play in realising Government ambitions.

Students want to ensure that their degree and time at university will help set them up for a rewarding and fulfilling career. These are stories of talented and determined graduates; some knew they wanted to start a business and chose their university and course accordingly, others came up with an idea while at university. Each found the support they needed through their course, student enterprise societies, lecturers, friends and university enterprise teams to make it a success. These stories illustrate that a successful graduate outcome is no longer constrained to securing a ‘graduate job’. Instead, students and graduates are creating jobs for themselves, and others, that fully utilise their expertise and abilities.

Two of a kind

We both wanted a degree that we could use and DMU’s Fashion Buying course was just that – it was very practical and combined creativity with business. We met in our first year and had a kindred experience. We had similar tastes, wanted similar things and soon we knew we wanted to set up a business together. It didn’t take long to develop the idea either. We are both a bit obsessed with shoes and we saw that there was space in the online market for a collection of attention worthy shoes, something a bit out of the ordinary.

Then it was research, research, research; and our course gave us the tools to do it properly. We needed to know whether there was demand, who we were going to sell to and what budget they had. So we built our customer profile – everything from the car they drive, the house they live in and the job they have – and shaped our business around our customer. But we were still students, we had no money and neither of us knew about the practical side of running a business. We needed to figure out how to turn our idea into reality.

Then Claire, one of our lecturers, asked us if we knew about Enterprise Inc, a business incubation and support programme run by the University for students and graduates with a good business idea. We were finishing our dissertations and preparing for our degree show but Enterprise Inc was too good an opportunity to pass up. It was scary presenting our idea to a Dragons’ Den style panel and having to answer lots of difficult questions about the business and explaining the figures. Despite our nerves, we won a place on the scheme. We started at the incubation centre on the same day that we got our degree results…and we haven’t stopped since!

Page 23: Kindred sole edition fashion magazine issue 9

Enterprise Inc made the difference between us having a good business idea and actually having a business. Amy, our business mentor was a whizz. She helped us get our initial bank loan. It was 2009, we were 21, we didn’t have any assets, but the bank was pleased with our business plan (if a little surprised) and 3 months after graduating they loaned us the rest of the money we needed to start-up.

As part of the 12 month Enterprise Inc scheme we also received some funding, office space, marketing support and accounting and legal help. We made good use of the drop in sessions with lawyers as we really needed their expertise, particularly on copywriting images and the legislation around distance selling – we had to make sure we got that right. The innovation centre and enterprise course was a bit like running a business with stabilisers. The stabilisers are well and truly off now but we wouldn’t have got where we are now without it.

We had planned to sell internationally about a year in, but after the first week we had people in 76 countries wanting to buy our shoes! We couldn’t process their sales as we didn’t have the infrastructure to cope with the legalities of international deliveries. We had to fix that quickly. Now we do really well not only in the UK but also in the US, Australia and Japan and this year we were finalists in the Footwear Industry Awards.

Kindred Sole is a lot of work and it means our lives are quite different from a lot of other women our age, but we love what we do. The business world can be a bit male dominated and it inspired us hearing strong business women like Tamara Mellon. Now we love going to speak to school and university students who are in the same position we were a few years ago. Hopefully it’s encouraging for them to see two girls standing there and saying “three years on we’ve done this and you can do it too.”
