Kincaid & Dallas Go National Last month, Cumulus WKHX/Atlanta morning co-hosts JJ Kincaid and Dallas McCade saw their two-year-old partnership (CAT 11/14/19) thrust into the national spotlight as their Kincaid & Dallas morning show became the newest Westwood One nationally syndicated product succeeding the

outgoing Morning Koffy (CAT 10/4). Once the duo had time to reply to the flurry of congratulations emails and social media posts, they agreed to tell Country Aircheck about their on-air dynamic and why being based in Atlanta isn’t the only thing that makes their show unique. “Syndication was a goal for both of us from the beginning, but we thought

it was more of a pie-in-the-sky dream,” explains Kincaid. Once Westwood One approached them with the idea, McCade says the process moved quickly. Meetings were held, and plans were drawn up that included keeping existing producers and sidekicks Amanda Dennihy and Garret Loudin in place for what Kincaid describes as “the best potluck breakfast radio.” Raising The Sbarro: “Remember when you’d go to the food court at the mall, and you’d get a little bit of everything?” Kincaid jokes. “You only wanted one thing from Taco Bell, but you liked the way the soda tasted at McDonald’s, and for dessert, you hit up the really good ice cream place.” Kincaid and McCade believe their show offers something for everyone, and they don’t have designs on changing the on-air dynamics or drastically varying content now that they’re syndicated. “We want to super-serve the markets we have as affiliates,” McCade says. “We want to learn more about the people, but we are holding true to what we’ve been doing ... it’s been working well for us.” Adds Kincaid, “Off-air, we’ve had more meetings, which I do appreciate, but the workload hasn’t changed ... so far!” Kincaid and McCade had chemistry from the jump. “We feel like family, and we all hang out, even when we’re not working,”

I couldn’t use any of it.” Struggling with his guitar he added, “In the immortal words of Buddy Cannon, ‘Shit.’” Grant reflected on the experience of being inducted. “I just wanted to hear everybody else’s story,” she said. “That’s the most beautiful thing about nights like this.” After hearing Emmylou Harris perform his song “Pilgrim,” Steve Earle explained why he chose Nashville over Austin. “The weather was too good, the girls were too pretty, dope was too cheap and I knew I’d never get anything done in a place like that.” Calling Nashville a “university for songwriters,” he added his appreciation for the honor. “I got [the news] in the midst of what was a bad year for everybody, but I had just lost my first born son who did this ... what we all do here ... and he was pretty damn good at it,” Earle said, adding that the call he received was

All the money is at [the other] end of the neck.’ So while my buddies were all doing Van Halen and Glen Campbell, I was down here trying to be Merle, Willie, Harlan [Howard] and all the great songwriters.” Final inductee Kent Blazy was celebrated by Garth Brooks, who performed their co-write “If Tomorrow Never Comes.” Blazy said, “I joke with young artists and songwriters: we have to be crazy to think we can come here and compete with the ones who came before us. Chart Chat Congratulations to Walker Hayes, Shane McAnally, Jason Owen, Katie McCartney, Luke Jensen, Katelyn Lester, Lisa Mastrianni, Steve Pleshe, Anna Gallenberger and the Monument promotion team on taking the viral hit “Fancy Like” to No. 1. Proof that persistence pays off, Hayes’ first chart-topper comes 11 years and three labels since his first chart appearance. “Fancy Like” is also the first No. 1 for the current incarnation of Monument, which was re-activated in Jan. 2017 (CAT 1/26/17). The last song on the Monument imprint to reach No. 1 was “Travelin’ Soldier” by the The Chicks in March 2003. “Fancy Like” songwriters are Cameron Bartolini, Josh Jenkins, Shane Stevens and Hayes. Country Aircheck goes Off The Record with Stoney Creek’s Frank Ray: Songwriting via Zoom is something I started during the pandemic and will continue doing. It’s a great way to stay connected with the craft, especially when things get so hectic in the artist world. I’ll keep utilizing that as an option to write with my friends even when I’m not home in Nashville. I’ve done a lot more livestreaming on social media to stay connected with fans. I showcased more of my day-to-day life at home as opposed to just concert highlights, which I realized fans truly enjoy engaging with. I remember listening to Y100 [KCYY] and KJ97 [KAJA] in San Antonio growing up. The radio was always set to one of those stations — it’s how I came to love country music in the first place. The first time I heard my song playing on the radio, I was hit by a wave of emotions. From excitement to pride and, eventually, to tears. It was the crowning moment of years and years of hard work. It’s a moment a lot of artists never get to have, and that’s not lost on me, so I allowed myself to give in to every single emotion. My current single, “Country’d Look Good On You,” is a song that captures all of the imagery of country music that we know and love but approaches it with a sexy, new vibe. My debut album will follow sometime next year and will include this song as well as an introductory body of work that I’m so incredibly proud of. I can’t wait to share with y’all! Backstage at the iHeartCountry Music Festival in Austin, a crazed fan ran past security. They were trying to chase him down, and I guess I reverted back to my cop days and tackled the ol’ boy before he could make it too far! The most redneck thing I’ve done lately is cracking a Coors Light while hanging in Napa Valley wine country. If I could’ve written one song, it would definitely be “Friends In Low Places.” We regularly play the honky tonks and see how timeless and beloved that song is. I want a song that will stand test of time like that … a song that, when I’m old and gray, everybody from the 21-year-olds to the retirees will be singing like it’s the current No. 1 record on radio. My favorite song on the radio right now is “Beer With My Friends” by Shy Carter. That song is an anthem, and I can’t help but turn it up when it’s on! I just finished Squid Game on Netflix. That was such a great series. I have so many friends telling me to check out Ted Lasso, so I think that’s next on my list.

says McCade. “Which is so different from some of the experiences JJ and I have had in previous situations.” McCade has been with WKHX for 13 years; Kincaid joined as part of a station rebranding in 2019 after Top 40 stops at KPTT/Denver, KDWB/Minneapolis, KHKS/Dallas and WHTZ/New York. But their career paths aren’t the only differences. “I don’t have any kids or a husband, so I’m ready to get on a plane and go anywhere at any time,” quips McCade. Kincaid says, “I’m all about that, but I also don’t want to be gone so frequently my wife grows old and my children are suddenly in college!” Non Friction: “If you’ve never listened, you can jump in without feeling turned off, because we do a good job at casually resetting our characters and what we’ve done in the past, so no one feels left out,” says McCade. “And we are relatable and funny.” Kincaid is a proud father and husband, but also a rabid – and indiscriminate – foodie. “The day my second son was born, I was so happy, but I might’ve been more excited about the Impossible Whopper coming out at Burger King that day,” he jokes. McCade is the everyone’s-best-friend type. “So many of our listeners have my personal cell phone number, and I regularly get approached at the grocery store or around town by people who feel like they know me – because they do,” she says. “We go to every concert our listeners go to. We live this lifestyle, love this music and are friends with our audience.” Remaining in Atlanta is seen as preserving balance between audience and the Nashville industry. “Other shows pride themselves on the backstage culture and the relationships they have with artists; that’s cool, but we are more on the side of the listener,” Kincaid says. McCade adds, “When Garth Brooks calls, we’re just happy to be talking to him. It’s never a ‘routine’ thing for us. Kincaid and McCade to be seen as insiders by their audience, while preserving a sense of how special artist interactions can be. “We aren’t seeing these artists at the coffee shop, so we have the same excitement our listeners would have if they had those opportunities,” echoes Kincaid. Fire In The Whole: The Kincaid & Dallas team is still developing national-focus growth plans for social media and digital. “We have talked about podcasts and video elements that would accompany the on-air component,” Kincaid says. “Podcasts about food – we both love restaurants so much – and maybe a digital video series that’s akin to what MTV Cribs was back in the day, but for real people. Artists, sure, but who doesn’t want to know what’s going on inside their neighbor’s house?” The pair would be willing to open up their own homes for the project, too. Well, maybe. “I may need to get my wife to sign off on that,” teases Kincaid. But McCade is ready and willing to show off her farm, animals, property and flame thrower. Yes, flame thrower. When asked to describe one another, the beyond-its-years bond is evident. “Funny, great dad, not such a great husband, bald and a worrier,” McCade says of Kincaid, while he returns with, “Fiery, resilient, open book, caring and a wild card.” He adds, “We aren’t afraid to be honest with each other, because this is a real relationship.” While they share high hopes for a successful run in syndication, their priorities include remaining true to themselves and each other, putting the audience first and maintaining an open line of communication. “As long as we’re doing this together, I’m good,” McCade says. “[But] I may have to get another cell phone to keep up with all the phone numbers from new listeners in different markets.” Reach Kincaid here and McCade here. –Monta Vaden

Country shares in the October 2021 PPM Book(9/16-10/13) were up 1.7% from September,339.8 to 345.7; shares were off 1.5% from lastOctober. Format cume saw its first uptick since May, up 2.8% from last month to 25,260,500. That is a 3.2% decrease from last October. Two New England stations tied for the largest share this month, with both WCTK/Providence and WWYZ/Hartford registering a 7.9. KYGO/Denver was the only Country station to lead

its market this month. In a fitting bit of irony, the cume of 863,100 persons for WNSH/New York in its last full month on the air was enough to lead the format for an eighth and final time. Legend: A “+” indicates a Classic Country outlet; a “^” designates co-owned Country stations in the metro; a “t” indicates a tie; and a “*” indicates a station that is a recent subscriber for which ratings were not currently available. Ranks are among subscribers.
