City labour situation has no effect on

JulyFest, Chamber manager says

C AROLYN GR ANTBulletin Editor

JulyFest will be just fine, re-gardless of the labour situation with the City of Kimberley, says Kimberley Chamber Manager Mike Guarnery.

With the City and Steelwork-ers Union scheduled to head to mediation on July 13 and July

15 the start date for JulyFest, there is of course concern, but Guarnery says the Chamber has a contingency plan in place.

“Events for the 44th Annual Kimberley Julyfest are on schedule,” Guarnery said in press release Friday. “The Kim-berley & District Chamber of Commerce are expecting over 200 bocce teams to participate in the Canadian Bocce Cham-pionships, as well as a well-at-tended concert at Reggae Fest in the Civic Centre on July 16th. The Julyfest Homecoming Pa-rade, and Kids Fest are sure to be fun for the whole family during this year’s Best of the

The Chamber ap-preciates the support received from Kimberley’s council, man-agement and staff in past July-fests; as well as the involvement received from other communi-ty groups. The Chamber and Julyfest organizers ensure that all events will occur in a safe and fun manner.

“Julyfest is a community event that is planned and oper-ated solely by the Chamber of Commerce.   The Chamber’s Board and staff, along with tre-

mendous support from volun-teers and our sponsors, will again ensure that this Julyfest will be a success.”

Guarnery says volunteer re-cruitment for the festival has been going very well and there are a couple of new community groups involved as well.

“We are doing very well but you can never have too many volunteers,” he said.

If you’d like to volunteer or have any comments and ques-tions regarding Julyfest contact the Chamber office at: (250) 427-3666, or e-mailed to [email protected].

BARRY COULTERThe summer is a

busy time for the Fisher Peak Performing Artists Society (FPPAS). The Society’s summer kicked off with hosting the Sam Steele Days en-tertainment in Rotary Park, and this weekend approaching, FFPAS is running the Canada Day entertainment for the first time, also in Ro-tary Park, Friday, July 1.

Celebrants of the 149th anniversary of Confederation can look forward to almost seven hours of live music pro-vided by local perform-ers.

• From 3 p.m. to 4:45 p.m., Neve , Parsons & Hamilton will take the stage. NP&H is a fresh three-piece band com-prised of veteran local musicians that concen-trates on the British In-vasion and on the rock and roll classics of the 1960s.

• 4:50 to 5:10 p.m. features Mismatched Socks, a young local family band with a blue-grass and country feel.

• Holly and Jon, a dy-namic father and daugh-ter blues duo from the Slocan Valley, perform from 5:15 to 7 p.m.

• The Twilight Trio follows, 7:05 to 7:25 p.m. The Twilight Trio is a new local three-piece act presenting great har-monies in their rendi-tion of the classics.

• One of Cranbrook’s most dynamic bands — the Mile High Club — will be performing Rock classics from the past five decades from 7:30 to 9:15 p.m.

• Local troubadour Dave Prinn takes the stage at 9:20 to 9:40 p.m. Prinn offers his own material as well as as putting his own twist on well know alternative folk and blues classics.

The Fisher Peak Per-forming Artists Society, founded two years ago by a group of local per-forming artists, is defi-nitely an organization by the people, for the people.

“We’re getting bigger every year,” said Randy Tapp, FPPAS Secretary.

FPPAS presents the sounds of Canada Day

Fisher Peak Performing Arts Society, running July 1 entertainment, getting bigger every year

The Society’s main goal is to promote the performing arts in the Cranbrook area — whether it be music, spoken word, dance or theatre — through ex-posure and through partnerships with like-minded groups.

FPPAS is building al-liances with the Key City Theatre, the City of Cranbrook and Colum-bia Basin Trust, and is active finding in events and venues for local performing artists, as well as helping perform-ers get the compensa-tion they deserve.

FPPAS is currently in the midst of a member-ship and sponsorship drive, inviting people and organizations to be-come part of Cran-brook’s active and vi-brant performing arts scene, with all the per-quisites that accompany membership.

“It’s important to our survival as a society that people come to support us as members,” said Society President James Neve. “The more we keep in touch with the community the more support we get.”

Members can even get access to some paid positions at various events, Neve said, and acquire some skills in

areas like technical sup-port, stage set-up and event management.

Following Canada Day, FPPAS will add a festival atmosphere to downtown Cranbrook for the summer. The popular Summer Sounds concert series will be back, as well as Dancing in the Park. This year, the two features are being combined into one, taking place every Saturday in Rotary Park starting July 9.

And FFPAS’s plans for the second annual Winter Ale Concert Se-ries — a partnership with the Key City The-atre — are already in the planning stages.

Canada Day festivi-ties in Rotary Park begin at 3 p.m., Friday, July 1.

Memberships for the Fisher Peak Performing Artists Society are avail-able at Lotus Books in Cranbrook, from Soci-ety members, or at FPPAS events.

Memberships are $10 per person, $25 per family. Members also get discounts on mer-chandise and paid shows, but the, real value is knowing that you are helping Cran-brook made a bigger im-pact on the arts scene in the East Kootenay, said Neve.

Entertainment was a wonderful fashion show featuring ladies golf at-tire throughout the ages (or at least since woman were allowed to golf), was organized by Barb Thompson and team and modelled by mem-bers of the participating ladies of the tourna-ment. As well a rousing song sung to the tune “When I’m 64” by the Beatle’s entitled “After 65” in honour of the 65th Anniversary of the Redding Rose Bowl written and performed by “The Golf Bags”. The song highlighted such dilemmas on if there is life playing golf after 65, such as “As I get older and taking more pills, Should I sell my clubs? Thinking of not golfing brings on the blues. What about my 14 pairs of golf shoes?” Rumour has it there will be vid-eos of these talents and words of wisdom on the Kimberley Golf Course Website (www.kimber-leygolfclub.com/-2016-redding-rose-bowl).

As usual, any func-tion cannot happen without volunteers. A huge thank you to and from the Rose Bowl Committee to all of you who made this another successful event.

Local reaction to the

British exit vote

C AROLYN GR ANTBulletin Editor

The world, and fi-nancial markets, were reeling on Friday as news of the decision by English voters to exit the European Union broke.

The British pound hit historic lows, the Canadian dollar fell a full penny, gold shot up, and stock markets were down.

But what about local impact? Does it matter in Kimberley one way or the other?

Mayor Don Mc-Cormick said Kim-berley could see a small tourism impact.

“Uncertainty af-fects all aspects of the economy, so until de-tails are sorted things like tourism could see some negative ef-fects,” he said. “Peo-ple tend to defer those expenditures first. We have a de-cent volume of tour-ism from the UK and Europe, so it is possi-ble we will be affect-ed to a degree. This is especially true if cur-rencies fluctuate wildly.

“Fortunately the vast majority of visi-tors to Kimberley are from Canada (Alber-ta, BC and Saskatche-wan) and not likely to change their plans because of this.”

“I once heard a phrase that “voters are never wrong”,” said Kimberley Chamber Manager Mike Guarnery.

“We are in a posi-tion we need to ac-cept the outcome from the decision the majority of United Kingdom citizens have made about their future in regards to their participation in the European Union. We saw a dra-matic reaction from the global markets, and as economists provide their evalua-tion to world leaders

about possible rami-fications of this change, individuals may want to speak with their financial investment represen-tatives and see how it will impact their port-folios.

“Time will tell if this is going to be problematic for busi-ness agreements in Canada, or a Y2K phenomenon that re-ally didn’t happen.”

Now is not the time to panic, says fi-nancial advisor Jim Scott of Kootenay Savings MoneyWorks.

“My advice is to assess your long term goals,” Scott said. “We saw this volatility in 2008, 2011, 2012 and now in 2016. General-ly speaking it shouldn’t impact long term financial goals.

“If you are a trader, it’s a huge opportuni-ty as often-times mar-kets over react to events like this. I’m certainly no expert, but if you are a long term investor just take a deep breath.”

Scott says he doesn’t believe inter-est rates will be mov-ing much from the current low rates.

“Central banks have indicated they will be providing li-quidity. It’s not a time to panic. Individual stocks will change, but overall the TSX is only down one per cent this morning (Friday, June 24).”

As for mortgages, again Scott says don’t panic.

“If it’s time to renew, don’t be con-cerned. But I wouldn’t be jumping out of a current mortgage just to get into a new one.”

One also has to keep in mind, Scott says, that while the vote was shocking, Britain will not actu-ally be exiting the Eu-ropean Union for two years, after much ne-gotiation.

“A lot will happen in two years, some good, some bad,” he said.

The Kootenay’s latest brewery has officially start-ed beer production, and their initial offering is avail-able for the public with more to follow soon.

“Our initial offering in-cludes our Good Evening Brown Ale, Mountain Standard Gold Ale, Cop-per Top Wheat Beer, and our Right About Now IPA,” said brewery owner Kenny Dodd. “Stop in to fill a

growler or take a taste!”Over Time Beer is now

available for sales in growl-ers, or on tap at the Over Time Beer Works, located at 136A Wallinger Avenue, in Kimberley, BC. Open-ing hours are 10 AM - 7 PM, 7 days a week. The Beer Works also offers a retail section with branded

merchandise, and a tast-ing section where patrons can learn more about the current beers and brew-ery.

The brewery is focus-ing on making well-crafted beers, and is looking to create both traditional timeless tastes as well as some more unconven-

“We’ve had over-whelmingly positive re-sponse to our initial offer-ings. We’ve always thought good beer and thirsty peo-ple usually work well to-gether, but we’re happy to hear great feedback right at the beginning. That’s enough talk. We’ve got to get back to making beer,”

said Dodd. Over Time Beer will be

The club reports, “they have nothing but praise in regards to how the attendees at the party listened and under-stood the implications,,, The kids were young adults and their maturi-ty was awesome. “T he EU is dying. I hope we’ve knocked the first brick out of the wall,” exulted Nigel Farage,

leader of the United Kingdom Indepen-dence Party. He proposed that June 23rd, when the British narrowly voted (51.8 per-cent of the votes) to leave the European Union, should be a new na-tional holiday called Inde-pendence Day.

But author J.K. Rowling, who wanted Scotland to re-main in the United King-dom and the UK to remain in the EU, tweeted sadly: “Scotland will seek inde-pendence now. Cameron’s legacy will be breaking up two unions. Neither needed to happen.”

Soon-to-be-former Prime Minister David Cameron’s decision to hold a refer-endum on Britain’s EU membership has assured the dismantling of the United Kingdom. 58 percent of the English voted “Leave”, while 62 percent of Scots voted “Remain”. It is “democratically unaccept-able” for Scotland to be dragged out of the EU by the English, said First Minister Nico-la Sturgeon, and a second independence referendum in Scotland is “highly likely”.

It remains to be seen whether Camer-on’s historic blunder will also trigger the disintegration of the EU itself, but there are plenty of right-wing nationalists in other EU countries who hope there will be a domino effect.

Marine Le Pen, leader of France’s Front National, called the UK referendum “a key moment in European history” and said “I hope the French also have a similar exer-cise.” And “Frexit”is just the start.

Geert Wilders, whose anti-Muslim, an-ti-immigration Freedom Party is predicted to win 46 of the 150 seats in the Dutch parliament in next year’s election, prom-ised that if he were elected, the Nether-

lands will hold its own “Nexit” referen-dum. Italy’s anti-immigrant Northern League and the populist 5-Star Movement both called for a referendum on Italian membership of the EU.

Kristian Thulesen Dahls, the leader of the Danish People’s Party, said that Den-

mark should follow Brit-ain’s lead. Nationalist lead-ers in Eastern Europe like Poland’s Jarosław Kaczyns-ki and Hungary’s Viktor Orban indulge in harsh an-ti-EU rhetoric all the time. And so on.

But most of the people who might vote for these nationalist lead-ers are not seeking the destruction of the EU, just big changes in the way it works — in particular the reform or abolition of the euro and much stricter controls on immi-gration. Unlike the “Little Englanders” who voted for Brexit, they see the European Union as an essential bulwark against a return to the old Europe of beg-gar-my-neighbour trade policies and sav-age wars.

The EU’s leaders will have to take a very tough line in the negotiations about the European Union’s post-Brexit relations with the rump of the UK. A horrible exam-ple will be required to show the national-ists and populists in other members that leaving is hard and painful. And to pre-serve the EU they will have to abolish or drastically restructure the euro currency (but that had become necessary anyway).

The odds are, however, that the EU will survive. Its biggest problem will not be the loss of Britain, its second-biggest econo-my, but rather the fact that post-Brexit Germany will dominate the Union even more than it does already.

As for the English, they have made their bed and they will have to lie in it. The pound sterling has already lost much value

and will probably lose much more. The last of the three major global ratings agencies, Standard and Poor’s, will downgrade the UK’s AAA credit rating. Foreign investment will dry up, in recognition of the fact that the country will probably lose duty-free access to the EU’s “single market”.

Further down the road more pain will follow, as jobs disappear abroad, the En-glish economy goes into recession, and the City of London starts to lose its status as a global financial centre rivalled only by New York. That will make domestic politics nasty enough, but the anti-immigrant fer-vour and outright racism that disfigured the “Leave” campaign are unlikely to dwindle in the ugly aftermath.

Scotland will vote to secede from the UK, but it will face major legal and political barriers in its campaign to remain a mem-ber of the EU in its own right. Spain in particular will give it a hard time, as Ma-drid does not want it to provide a prece-dent for Catalonia seceding from Spain and painlessly re-emerging as an indepen-dent EU member.

Northern Ireland will face an even harder time, as the Republic of Ireland will continue to be a EU member and so it will have to re-establish border controls. One alternative,of course, would be for North-ern Ireland (which voted strongly in favour of EU membership) to unite with the Re-public — but Northern Irish Protestants would still fiercely resist such a proposal, and in that context a revival of armed con-flict in the province is not unthinkable.

The triumph of Brexit is a most regretta-ble outcome for everybody involved and possibly even for the world economy. But perhaps it isn’t really all that shocking: Charles De Gaulle vetoed British entry to the Common Market, the EU’s ancestor, for five years on the grounds that it didn’t really have a “European vocation”. Turns out he was right.

OPINION/EVENTS

P remier Christy Clark flew up to Dawson Creek for the second time in a

month on June 19, to survey the damage from a storm that dumped 130 mm of rain on the region in two days.

At Chetwynd, where High-way 97 emerges from the Pine Pass through the Rocky Moun-tains, the highway was severely damaged after water poured under and across it in the mid-dle of town. The CN Rail tracks and adjacent roads were washed out.

In Dawson Creek, large cul-verts under the main street were plugged by debris, send-ing water over the road and generating a much-viewed video of a white car precarious-ly perched on the edge as the torrent surrounded it.

“Floods happen,” Clark told CTV News. “But not floods like this.”

The CTV report, filed from Vancouver with dramatic video to show the worst in Dawson Creek, agreed with the pre-mier’s line: “The Peace region last rebuilt from significant flooding in 2011, but the dam-age was much worse in this latest case.”

tion. She noted that Highway 97 was washed out in at least five places.

“This was a very powerful storm, quite uncommon … but the assessment of damage does not appear to be as extensive as it was in 2011,” Butts said.

That’s consistent with my own news reports in the wake of the 2011 storm. Again, it dropped about 130 mm on the Pine Pass in late June.

In that event, a 64-km stretch of the highway between Prince George and Chetwynd was washed out or damaged in 77 places. Repairs continued into the fall.

Northwestern B.C. received even more rain, with damage to four bridges, 10 large cul-verts and more than 20 km of roads in the Bulkley-Stikine highways district.

I drove up the Trans-Cana-da Highway in the immediate aftermath of the 2011 storm,

which had affected most of the province to some degree. The divided highway east of Chilli-wack had just re-opened after a mudslide poured across it, trapping one vehicle whose passengers escaped un-harmed.

I drove that route again last week, with only a sprinkle of rain here and there. Every time I pass the large pump station coming into Hope, I’m remind-ed of the summer of 1983, when I worked at my first re-porting job there.

Summer in Hope got off to an exciting start when torren-tial rains washed out the Trans-Canada Highway west of town. Again, it was in June.

I had to walk along the closed highway for about a ki-lometre to get pictures of the huge cut in the divided high-way roadbed, and the stretch of CP Rail tracks left hanging in the air after water removed the

with the Fraser Canyon in 1983. That fall, having returned to Vancouver to resume journal-ism school at Langara College, I turned on BCTV news one evening to see the effect of heavy rains on a little motel with cabins along the bank of Silverhope Creek.

The old cabin I had stayed in that summer was gone, and the one next to it was badly undercut and about to fall in after the swollen creek had shifted its course.

Heavy weather wasn’t a po-litical issue in those days. “Cli-mate change” hadn’t been in-vented, so there was no moti-vation for politicians to rush to the scene and pronounce each disaster the worst one ever.

It’s the time of year when many of us enjoy cook-

ing outdoors - in parks, camp-grounds and back yards. This pleasurable summer pastime of casual dining also provides ideal conditions for outbreaks of foodborne illness.

Foodborne illness peaks during the months of May through September because of barbecuing and outdoor eat-ing. E. coli, Salmonella and Campylobacter are examples of some of the many bacteria related to handling raw meats and other perishable food items. That’s why it’s vital to be sure items are refrigerated, well cooked and handled with care.

Outdoor cooks should keep food safety in mind as they are preparing summer feasts. These four words can help you reduce the risk:

Clean: Wash your hands with soap and warm water be-fore and after handling food. Wash all dishes, cutting boards and counters with hot soapy water. A spray bottle contain-ing 1/2 tsp of chlorine bleach per litre of water can be used to sanitize these items.

Separate: Keep raw foods away from cooked foods to avoid cross-contamination. Store raw meat at the bottom of the fridge or cooler to prevent juices from dripping onto other foods. Always use a clean plate

when taking cooked meat off the barbeque.

Cook: Properly cooking food will kill harmful bacteria. Cook all meat to the appropri-ate internal temperature - see Health Canada’s Safe Internal Cooking Temperatures chart (http://www.healthycanadi-ans.gc.ca/eating-nutrition/safety-salubrite/cook-tem-peratures-cuisson-eng.php) for more details. Use a digital food thermometer to measure the inside temperature of cooked meats. Once cooked, keep hot foods at 60ºC or hotter until ready to serve.

Chill: Always thaw meat in the fridge, microwave, or under cold running water – never at

room temperature. Do not let cooked or perishable food sit out in the sun or at room tem-perature for more than two hours. Cool any leftovers right away. Finally, keep cold foods cold at 4ºC or lower.

Making Plans: Ice announce regular season schedule

Kootenay Ice forward Zak Zborosky battles against an Edmonton Oil King during 2015-16 WHL action at Western Financial Place.

TAYLOR ROCC ASports Editor

On the eve of the 2016 Canadian Hockey League Import Draft, the Western Hockey League made official its itinerary for the 2016-17 season.

The WHL’s schedule was released Monday af-ternoon, with first puck drop coming Friday, Sept. 23.

The Kootenay Ice open the club’s 19th campaign in the East Kootenay by visiting the Scotiabank Saddledome, taking on the Calgary Hitmen on Sept. 23, be-fore returning to Cran-brook for the team’s home-opener, also against the rival Hitmen, on Saturday, Sept. 24.

Over a 72-game spread, the Ice play 36 home games and 36 away games, as per the usual.

This includes 34 games against Central Division opponents — seven games against each of the Hitmen, Le-thbridge Hurricanes, Medicine Hat Tigers and Red Deer Rebels and six games against the Edmonton Oil Kings. The 2015-16 season saw the Ice finish in the basement of the Central Division and entire WHL, going 12-53-6-1.

The Ice will take on East Division opposi-tion four times apiece (twice at home, twice on the road) before playing host to each of the B.C. Division teams. In 2015-16, fans in Cranbrook did not see B.C. Division clubs visit Western Fi-nancial Place, while the Ice travelled throughout the province and B.C. Division.

The cross-border ri-valry between the Koo-tenay Ice and Spokane Chiefs will continue to rage on, with five border battles set for the 2016-17 campaign (twice in Cranbrook, three times at Spokane Veterans Memorial Arena. Addi-tionally, the Ice will visit each of the other four U.S. teams after not doing so in 2015-16.

Other than the Chiefs, WHL fans in Cranbrook will not be entertained by U.S. Divi-sion teams (Everett Sil-vertips, Portland Win-terhawks, Seattle Thun-

derbirds, Tri-City Amer-icans) in 2016-17.

The post-Christmas home-and-home series remains on the sched-ule for the Kootenay Ice, though the opponent changes in 2016. Where-as the Ice took on the Hitmen in a holiday home-and-home previ-ously, the Lethbridge Hurricanes will visit Cranbrook on Tuesday, Dec. 27, before welcom-ing the Ice to the Enmax Centre on Wednesday, Dec. 28.

In terms of a weekly breakdown, 25 of 36 (69.4 per cent) Kootenay Ice home games will be played on weekends at Western Financial Place, including 10 on Friday, 11 on Saturday and four on Sunday.

The rest of the home schedule is rounded out with six Tuesday con-tests (16.7 per cent) and five on Wednesdays (13.9 per cent).

A particularly special annual date on the Koo-tenay Ice calendar will appear once again in 2016-17. The team’s an-nual teddy bear toss game is scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 10, when the high-powered Kelowna Rockets pay a visit to Cranbrook.

October will feature the most Kootenay Ice home games in any given month this coming season, as the club plays host on eight occasions while only taking to the road for four contests.

The lightest month on the Kootenay Ice itin-erary comes in Febru-ary, with nine outings scheduled, including seven at home and only two on the road.

The team will play three games in three nights on three separate occasions, the first set for Nov. 25 to 27 (at Red Deer; vs. Swift Current; vs. Edmonton).

The season-long road trip for the Kootenay Ice doesn’t come down the pipe until late in the campaign, with a five-game venture scheduled from Wednesday, March

1, through Tuesday, March 7. Over the five-game, seven-day swing, the Ice will visit Edmon-ton, Saskatoon, Prince Albert, Moose Jaw and Medicine Hat.

Ice fans can look for-ward to a home-heavy February, with seven of nine games being played in Cranbrook, in-cluding a season-high 12-day homestand with four games from Feb. 1 to 12. Additionally, the team will enjoy a four-game homestand from Oct. 21 to 30.

Another note on the eastern travel front, the Ice will only make one trek to Brandon, taking on the defending-cham-pion Wheat Kings on back-to-back nights (Jan. 13 and 14). In 2015-16, the Ice made two separate trips to Brandon.

The 792-game WHL regular season con-cludes Sunday, March 19.

The Kootenay Ice regular season schedule comes to a close with in a home-and-home with the Hitmen on Friday, March 17 (at Western Fi-nancial Place) and Sat-urday, March 19 (at Sco-tiabank Saddledome).

All Kootenay Ice home games at Western Financial Place will get underway at 7 p.m., with the exception of Sunday games beginning at 4 p.m. The lone outlier comes Sunday, Oct. 30, when the Ice welcome the Brandon Wheat Kings for a 2 p.m. mati-nee.

The 2017 WHL Play-offs and the race for the Ed Chynoweth Cup will open Friday, March 24.

In addition to the regular season slate, the WHL announced Prince George and Edmonton as host cities for the league’s two 2016 CHL Canada/Russia Series in November. Team WHL will take on the Russian National Junior Team in Prince George on Mon-day, Nov. 7, with the re-match set for Tuesday, Nov. 8, in Edmonton.

See www.cranbrook-townsman.com/break-ing_news/ for the com-plete 2016-17 Kootenay Ice schedule.

Zborosky heads to development camp with New York RangersIce alumni Mackenzie Skapski also in attendance at Rangers camp

TAYLOR ROCC AAfter being passed

over at back-to-back NHL Entry Drafts, Koo-tenay Ice forward Zak Zborosky is getting an opportunity to prove scouts wrong.

The 19-year-old vet-eran was one of 31 play-ers invited to the 2016 New York Rangers Pros-pect Development Camp, joining former Ice standout goaltender and Rangers prospect Mackenzie Skapski.

Zborosky — a 6-foot, 174-pound native of Re-gina — heads into his final season of WHL eli-gibility as a free agent in search of a pro contract after being overlooked at the 2015 and 2016 NHL Entry Drafts.

The speedy winger was on the radar of NHL scouts ahead of the 2015 NHL Entry Draft, land-ing on a preliminary watch list of NHL Central Scouting [CSS] early in the 2014-15 campaign.

“We think [Zborosky] is poised to breakout of-fensively,” said Dan Marr, NHL director of Central Scouting, at the time of Zbo-rosky’s appear-ance on the CSS radar. “He’s paid his dues. He is a skilled forward. He’s got the skating and the hockey sense to gener-ate some offense for the team… We know he’s a decent play-maker with a good shot.

“We think he has the potential to continue to develop as a skill for-ward and maybe add a little power-forward ele-ment to his game.”

The 2014-15 season didn’t quite produce the breakout many NHL scouts anticipated, as Zborosky managed 18 goals and 40 points through 72 games.

Fast-forward to 2015-16, relied upon heavily by his team, Zborosky

showed flashes of the potential Marr de-scribed. In 58 contests, Zborosky eclipsed the 30-goal plateau, manag-

ing 32 markers to go with 36 as-sists and a ca-reer-high 68 points.

R a n g e r s Prospect Devel-opment Camp

runs from June 27 through July 1 at the MSG Training Centre in New York.

A number of WHL players will take to the ice, including forwards

Reid Duke (Brandon Wheat Kings; invite), Ryan Gropp (Seattle Thunderbirds; 2015 — second round draft pick), Brad Morrison (Prince George Cougars; 2015 — fourth round), Ty Ronning (Vancouver Giants; 2016 — seventh round) and defenceman Sergey Zborovskiy (Regi-na Pats; 2015 — third round).

Skapski, an Ice alum-nus, was a sixth-round selection of the Rangers at the 2013 NHL Entry Draft and turned pro to start the 2014-15 season.

Jerry Bancks always said one of the biggest keys to success was a quality contingent of lo-cally-grown players.

For the past few years, the Kimberley Dynamit-ers were the envy of the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League, deploying a core of local players including the likes of captain Jason Richter, Jared Marchi, Trevor Van Steinburg and Tyler Van Steinburg, just to name a few.

As it stands, Richter is off to pursue post-sec-ondary education while playing for the University of Jamestown Jimmies ACHA Div. 1 men’s hock-ey program and Marchi has aged out of junior, leaving two significant holes to fill in the contin-gency of locally-pro-duced Dynamiters.

Derek Stuart, head coach and general man-ager of the Dynamiters, helped address that need as he signed local products Terrell Clarri-coates and Caige Sterzer.

“It’s really important, first of all, it’s great for the fan base at large to have some local kids and families that they recog-nize from Kimberley and Cranbrook,” said Jeff Keiver, assistant coach of the Kimberley Dynamit-ers, Monday afternoon. “It helps with our atten-dance and the overall attention that the team receives, but it’s also re-ally good for minor hockey systems as well.

“Young kids can see their path. We always keep that connection alive so kids [in minor hockey] can really relate to somebody they know.

That path [to junior hockey] is laid out clear-ly.”

Stuart confirmed the signings over the phone from Osoyoos Thursday evening after arriving for the KIJHL annual general meeting.

Clarricoates and Sterzer should be names familiar to Nitro Nation, with both having suited up as affiliates this past season.

Clarricoates is a 17-year-old forward (5-foot-11, 175 pounds) hailing from Cranbrook. He suited up in three regular season games during the 2015-16 sea-son, tallying one goal.

“He’s a hard-working player,” Keiver said of Clarricoates. “From what I’ve seen, he’ll go to the dirty areas and he will finish his checks. He’s been a great kid in the dressing room through our playoff run and all that.

“He kept his eyes open and he was trying to learn as much as he could from the veteran team that we had last year.”

Clarricoates regis-tered two goals and five points in 33 games with the Kootenay Ice of the B.C. Major Midget League (BCMML) in 2015-16.

Sterzer is set to turn 16 this August and dressed from three reg-ular season games — registering one assist — as well as two playoff games this past season.

At 5-foot-11 and 165 pounds, Sterzer stands to inject some youth into the retooling Dyna-miters after spending the bulk of 2015-16 play-ing with the BCMML Ice, stacking up nine

points in 39 games. “He’s a kid that we’ve

been watching growing up and he’s getting a lot bigger,” Keiver said. “He’s going to be able to hopefully make some offensive plays out there for us.

“Same as Terrell, he was willing to do every-thing we asked of him last year in a very limited role. With these younger guys, the coolest thing is that we don’t really know what there ceiling is yet. We’d like to see them play a full season and have high hopes for where they can go. They haven’t really been put in that position yet, so we’re excited to see what they can do.”

With Clarricoates and Sterzer under wraps, the Dynamiters have se-cured a young group of upcoming local talent, including returning for-ward James Rota and de-fenceman Lucas Purdy.

“It’s a really exciting time for younger players in the Dynamiters sys-tem,” Keiver said. “Prob-ably for the first time in two or three years there’s lots of openings in the top-six [forwards], top-four [defencemen], power play, penalty kill.

“They’re going to get a really good look at those positions and the same goes for anyone else. For the first time in a couple years we can actually tell our recruits that there’s power-play time, top-six minutes and top-four minutes on the backend for players, whereas in the last cou-ple years we wouldn’t say that. We were pretty honest with our recruit-ing process that you were going to come in here and really have to

work if you wanted to get those minutes because we had so many veteran guys already established themselves in those roles.”

Fans, along with those in Dynamiters hockey operations, will have to play wait-and-see with an additional trio of potential return-ing locals.

Korbyn Chabot, a 16-year-old Cranbrook product, was a ninth-round pick (182nd) of the Tri-City Americans at the 2014 WHL Ban-tam Draft. He is expect-ed to return to Ameri-cans camp this fall and is also on the radar of the BCHL’s Surrey Ea-gles after attending the team’s spring camp ear-lier this year.

The Van Steinburg brothers have signed with the AJHL’s Can-more Eagles and while former Nitro Sawyer Hunt can tell you there are no guarantees, both Van Steinburgs should have a good opportunity to crack the Canmore squad this fall.

Matchsticks: The Castlegar Rebels filled their coaching vacancy, announcing the hiring of Bill Rotheisler as head coach and general man-ager Sunday evening. Rotheisler takes over from Jesse Dorans who accepted the head coach/general manag-er’s role with the Drayton Valley Thunder of the Al-berta Junior Hockey League earlier this spring. Rotheisler spent 2015-16 as an associate coach with the KIJHL’s Creston Valley Thunder Cats and was previously the head coach and gen-eral manager of the KI-JHL’s Princeton Posse...

TAYLOR ROCC ASports Editor

Derek Stuart is wast-ing no time filling holes in his lineup.

The head coach and general manager of the Kimberley Dynamiters addressed a cavernous void on his blue-line, acquiring puck-moving defenceman Brett Rob-erts (1997) from the Beaver Valley Nitehawks in exchange for future considerations Monday afternoon.

“He’s an offen-sive-minded defence-man that can move the puck and can jump into the rush,” Stuart said Monday afternoon. “He can run a power play, so he’s definitely offen-sive-minded but at the same time, is pretty sound in his own end. It’s something we defi-nitely need.”

Roberts — a 5-foot-11, 184-pound native of Grande Prairie, Alta. — registered nine goals

and 20 points in 36 reg-ular season games with the Nitehawks last year. He added a goal and four points in 14 post-season contests on the Beaver Valley blue-line.

The 2015-16 season was Roberts’ rookie year in the KIJHL, but as a 19-year-old defence-man, there is plenty of opportunity for him to step into a sizeable role for Stuart’s squad this fall.

“With the amount of guys that have left and losing the 50 or 60 points that [Jordan] Busch pro-vided, I think that’s going to be an import-ant role,” Stuart said. “Brett can come in, and not be stuck solely with replacing those points himself, but definitely be a big contributor to our offensive produc-tion from the backend.

“I’m looking for him to be in our first pairing and run one of our power plays as well.”

As it stands, Roberts joins Trey Doell (1997), Devon Langelaar (1997) and Lucas Purdy (1998)

as KIJHL returners to the Dynamiters defen-sive group.

Gone from last year’s KIJHL regular season championship crew are George Bertoia (1998, AJHL Drumheller), Busch (1995, Concordia University of Edmon-ton), Justin Meier (1995, University of James-town) and Tyler Van Steinburg (1998, AJHL Canmore).

Notes from the KIJHL annual general meeting

Stuart represented the Dynamiters at the KIJHL’s annual general meeting (AGM) this

past weekend in Os-oyoos with one particu-larly significant alter-ation coming out of the league’s yearly gather-ing.

The KIJHL has gone ahead with the widely controversial decision to eliminate cross-con-ference competition, beginning in 2016-17.

“As far as I under-stand, it is just for this year and it will be

re-evaluated at the end of the year,” Stuart said. “The general feeling I got from talking to some

coaches, not everyone was too pleased with it.

“The few guys I did

speak with, they would much rather have the crossover. You get to see every team in the league. Now, there’s 19 other teams in the league and we’re only playing nine of them. Another 10 of them we don’t get to see and our fans don’t get to see.”

According to Stuart, the expected break-down of the schedule will see teams play divi-

sional opponents eight times (32 games) with four contests coming against each out-of-di-vision opponent within the conference (20 games).

The lone opportunity for a Kootenay Confer-ence team to play an Okanagan/Shuswap Conference team won’t come until the 2017 KIJHL championship series.

Baby Blues By Kirkman and Scott

Rhymes with Orange By Hillary B. Price

Dear Annie: Several years ago, our son lived with a very immature young woman. We tried to make her feel welcome, but she had no interest in getting to know us. The only thing she ever asked was how much our son would inherit. She then had an affair. Our son asked whether he should leave her. My husband said yes, but I told my son that people make mistakes and it was his decision. He stayed. A few months later, she was worried he might leave, so she lied about using the pill and got pregnant. The baby was christened and baptized with only her family present. We saw the photos on Facebook. When they got married shortly after, they never said a word to us. We decided not to hold a grudge. We bought a house where they could live for $200 a month in rent, and gave them $40,000 to furnish it. Our new daughter-in-law said we should let them live there rent-free and they stopped paying rent. They also didn’t take care of the house. So we sold it, and when we didn’t give them the proceeds, she told everyone that we were terrible people and had stolen their money. They now have two children and a third on the way. We are not allowed to see the grand-children. Our son calls us once a month, but he’s afraid to tell his wife. We just wrote a new will and are giving them nothing. We haven’t told our son this, but we’ve told our other children that they can give their brother a share if they choose. But his wife has also cut off contact with the siblings, as well as our son’s grandparents. It’s been five years. We would still welcome her, but we aren’t holding our breath. Our son says he’s OK with this. He says he’s not abused. Some-times there is no happy ending. -- Resigned to Our Situation Dear Resigned: We are so sorry your son married such an unkind, immature person. Also, that he is too cowardly to take a stand, fearful that she might leave. But that is highly unlikely. We wonder how your daughter-in-law would react if she learned that you might reconsider including them in your will if you were allowed to spend time with the grand-children. She sounds mercenary enough to think about it. It’s good that you have other children to lean on. Our condolences. Dear Annie: I just returned from a bridal shower and learned that a few of us were not invited to the wedding. I am a good friend of the bride and of her mother. The other wom-en at my table said, “See you at the wedding.” I stayed silent. Several of us are baking the cake and cook-ies for the wedding. Most of us who are do-ing the baking are not invited. When did it become OK to invite people to a shower and not the wedding? -- Old-Fashioned Dear Old-Fashioned: It is not OK to invite friends and family to a shower and not the wedding. (Work showers fall into a different category.) It is especially rude to ask these same people to bake for the event, unless you are charging them a fee. However, there is a possibility that the bride assumes you will be in attendance anyway since you are preparing the desserts. You might talk to the bride’s mother and clear it up. We’d hate for there to be a misunderstanding. Annie’s Mailbox is written by Kathy Mitch-ell and Marcy Sugar, longtime editors of the Ann Landers column. ARIES (March 21-April 19)You feel intensely; therefore you might decide to stand up to the status quo. You could be forced to look at your involvement in the professional realm. Opt for a change and/or a need to do more research before you make a re-quest. Tonight: Decide to surprise a friend.TAURUS (April 20-May 20) What you are visualizing might not be what you want. Don’t jump the gun; wait to see if your vision is right-on. As you calm down and detach, you could have a major insight that puts yet an-other slant on this issue. Tonight: Keep information hush-hush for now.GEMINI (May 21-June 20) You could feel overwhelmed by others and their needs. You might be put off by what you perceive as someone’s demands. Avoid a power play at all costs simply by doing nothing. A meeting or get-together with friends will perk up your day. Tonight: Where

the party is.CANCER (June 21-July 22) Be ready to step up to the plate. Others need you to demonstrate leadership. Many people around you will feel motivated as a result. Still, as much as you understand the dynamics, you could be sur-prised by what occurs later in the day. Tonight: A must appearance.LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) Reach out for more information. Some of you might opt to take a workshop or a class that you feel will be meaningful. When you de-tach, you’ll gain some emotional insight that has been unavailable to you. You could surprise yourself with your choices. Tonight: All smiles.VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) A partner plays a major role in making a decision. You care about this person’s opinion more than you realize. One-on-one relating takes you down a new path. You could be surprised by what opens up. Refuse to take a gamble. To-night: Go along with someone else’s desires.LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)Pressure builds to an unprece-

How you express your lev-el of irritation could be a lot more serious than you might realize. Perhaps a close associate will take one of your comments in the wrong vein. Be careful. Tonight: Get a good night’s sleep.SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)Open up to a new approach or a different way of handling issues. You initially might be resistant, but ultimately you’ll decide that you have nothing to lose. Take your time when making a deci-sion, and get past a need to be frivolous or wild. Tonight: The unexpected happens.CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)Getting back to basics will make a difference, and it will deter-mine which direction would be best for you to head in. Go back

to that level if you’re faced with a question that you can’t seem to answer. You’ll find your way quickly once you start to focus. Tonight: Out late.AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)Others will listen to what you say, and also will let you know if they disagree. You could be taken aback by how someone lets you know his or her viewpoint. Unfor-tunately, this is likely to keep you from sharing with this person in the future. Tonight: Somewhere other than home.PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) You might be too tired to pursue a long-term goal that is import-ant to you. You could drop your defenses and become careless with your spending if you are not careful. Be more in touch with your needs, even in the face of someone else’s demands. BCSPCA East Kootenay July Happenings!

THANK YOU!!!!!The BCSPCA’s Most Wanted was a great success! Thank you to all of our “fugitives”, Mayor Lee Pratt, Mayor Don McCormick, Steve Zsillei from Denham Ford, Karla Shalley from The Playpen, Tamara L’Hoost from Summit 107, Jason De Rijk from SideKick Stickers, Chris Thom from Rocky Mountain Diesel, Carrie Schafer from eKnow, Don MacMillian from the City of Cranbrook and the Kootenay Ice, Jennifer Mouly from Velvet Moss, Gina Martin from Jim Pattison Broadcast Group, Mark Salvador from Sandor Rental, Janice Sommerfeld from Snapd, Shane Stewart from Melody Motors, Chris Botterill from Genix Marketing, Steve Mercandelli from Cranbrook Dodge, and Brenna Baker from the BCSPCA! We raised close to $13,000! We would like to send out a big thank you to our sponsors: Boston Pizza, Steeples Vet, Tanglefoot Vet, Cranbrook Vet, B104, Sidekick Stickers and Summit 107. Also thank you to everyone who donated money towards this event. It was a fantastic day and we are already making plans for next year!Thank you to Trevor Zac and Fitness Inc. for another successful Strong Man Competition Raf e. An amazing $5200 was raised. Thank you to all of the volunteers who helped sell tickets for the raf e. Also, thanks to all of the sponsors: Aaron’s, Summit Radio, Trickle Creek Golf, Mountain Spirit Resort, Happy Duck Sprinkler Systems, and Kootenay Cooling and Heating!

BC SPCA Summer Kids CampsRegistration is now available for all of our summer camps. We are excited to offer a new and exciting camp program for 2016! Week long camps for 7-11 year olds run throughout July and August. New this year is our Mini Camp running August 16th -18th for 5-7 year olds. Details and registration can be found at spca.bc.ca/camps. We sell out every year so be sure to sign up soon!

10 Minutes to Disaster!Dogs (and cats) cool themselves by panting and by releasing heat through their paws. On summer days the air and upholstery in your vehicle can heat up to high temperatures that make it impossible for pets to cool themselves. The risk is real! If it is 26C outside, inside a car, even with the windows cracked, the temperature can reach 37C in 10 minutes and 43C in 20 minutes. If your dog’s temperature reaches 41C cell and organ damage begins to occur. Please leave your animals at home when running out to do errands. If you do spot a dog or any animal in a car on a hot day please call the BCSPCA hotline at 1-855-622-7722 or the local RCMP immediately.

Summer is hereand with the sunny weather comes many outdoor activities to do with your pet. When spending time in the sun there are a few things to be conscious of. With temperatures rising its important to remember not to leave your dog in a hot car while you run errands, even a few minutes in the sun can leave your car sweltering and

your dog prone to heatstroke. Pavement can be very hot and burn pets feet, check with the back of your hand before you go walking, if it’s too hot for you, it’s too hot for your pet. Always have clean fresh water available and plenty of shade in the back yard for them to rest in.

N E L S O N S TA RClasses were can-

celled Monday at Mount Sentinel sec-ondary school in South Slocan in the wake of “serious threats” re-ceived last week.

Students were evac-

uated Friday afternoon and graduation cere-monies this weekend were postponed.

“We have decided to continue with the clo-sure of the school for Monday given where we are in the school

year and that provincial exams are now com-plete coupled with the ongoing police investi-gation,” vice-principal Shellie Maloff wrote. “Re-opening the school is our priority and we are hoping that will

happen on Tuesday.”However, Brent Ken-

nedy elementary, which is just down the road from Mount Senti-nel will be open.

In a letter posted on the school’s website, superintendent Jeff

Jones said they were “made aware of a seri-ous threat to the safety of our students, staff, and school communi-ty.”

Jones said working with local RCMP, they organized early buses

and students left the school at about 2:45 p.m. Friday.

After “extensive con-sultation” with provin-cial violence threat risk assessment experts, a district trauma re-sponse team, police

and Ministry of Chil-dren and Family Devel-opment, Jones post-poned grad ceremonies planned for tonight and tomorrow.

“We will be looking at a date in the future to host the ceremony and activities that the stu-dents rightly deserve,” Jones wrote. “Knowing that a lot of preparation and excitement goes into graduation, we rec-ognize this will be a great disappointment to students and fami-lies. However, we do ask that they respect the cancellation and not gather at the school.”

Jones asked parents to be “extra vigilant” with any “grad activi-ties, parties or events where students may congregate this week-end.”

Jones said he couldn’t share any de-tails about the threat because a police inves-tigation is underway. However, “I assure you the nature of the threat warranted the action we have taken.”

RCMP Insp. Tom Roy said he couldn’t provide any other infor-mation either.

“This is still a very active ongoing investi-gation right now,” he said in an email to the Star. “We are still in the process of collecting additional information with regards to the events occurring at Mount Sentinel.”

Mount Sentinel has Grades 7 to 12 and a total enrollment of about 300.

West Kootenay school closed in wake of threats
