Recently, a partnership between Sum-

For the first time, British Columbia is marking a statutory hol-iday deep in the heart of winter.

Family Day in B.C. is on Monday, Feb. 11, 2013, and Fort Steele Heritage Town is invit-ing all and sundry to celebrate the long week-end on a golden winter’s day on the premises.

On Sunday, Feb. 10, a full slate of events is planned at Fort Steele, starting at 11 a.m. The ever popular sleigh rides will be happening through those vintage streets (by donation, and weather permit-ting), and the spacious outdoor skating rink will be open.

A family-style lunch will be served at the In-ternational Hotel, and hot apple cider and fresh baked goods at the Lambi House.

The International Hotel is also the site of Valentine cookie deco-rating ($2 each), in ad-vance of another special day coming up later in the week.

There will be bon-fires, and much more.

Not everyone is aware that Fort Steele is open all year round — here’s a good opportu-nity to take in the joy of a Canadian winter.

Admission is by do-nation.

First Family DayOn January 10, 2011,

while running for the leadership of the BC Liberal Party, Christy Clark proposed estab-lishing a Family Day holiday on the third Monday of February. Clark subsequently be-came premier; the Speech from the Throne, delivered on October 3, 2011, said that BC would observe its first Family Day on February 18, 2013.

In 2012, a two-week consultation process was held in order to de-termine if British Co-lumbians preferred the holiday to fall on the second or third Monday in February.[13] On May 28, 2012, it was an-nounced that Family Day would be observed on the second Monday in February each year, starting February 11, 2013.

Want to treat that special person in your life to a great night out for Valentines Day? Look no further than the Valentines Day Dinner, Dance and Auction at the Kimberley Conference Centre on the fifteenth of February.

Sponsored by the Kimberley Independent School (KIS), this event should prove to be a fantastic night, said Jennifer Roberts, principal.

“You can’t pass up a formal night out,” she said. “This is a great Valentines gift for someone who has everything.”

The black and white affair is an opportunity not only for couples to enjoy each other’s company, but for friends to reconnect.

“Get a table together with all of your friends, enjoy cocktails and a special valentines buffet, and live music from The Hollers,” said Roberts.

Roberts said that the event was sold out last year, and getting tickets early is a must. Early bird sales for $40 a ticket ends January 28th, and then tickets are $50 until February tenth.

Tickets are available at Black Bear, Fas Gas, and Lotus Books.

“Dig out your formal duds,” said KIS director, Gwen Zanini, “here is a chance to wear them.”

“She said, ‘Well, it’s procedure. I have to pat you down.’ At this point in time, I really have no choice. I’m going some-where, I have to be pat-ted down obviously.”

What’s more, after the pat-down, which was focused on Lynn’s chest, the TSA agent also scanned Lynn’s hands for explosives.

“I was just dumb-founded,” says Lynn. “I knew it was procedure for her, but it still really bothered me that even though she could see there was nothing there, she patted me down.”

Describing herself as an outspoken per-son, Lynn says the ex-perience was traumat-ic.

“I consider myself a fairly strong person. I’ve never had to go for counselling. This is re-ally bothering me. I’m

going to get hold of the cancer society and see if I can talk to some-body about it, because it’s really bothering me,” she says.

“There is no reason to be put through that, as far as I’m concerned. What are you hiding? There is nothing.”

Lynn is now thinking twice about travelling in the U.S.

“It makes me recon-sider it. We are going to a convention in Vegas in August and instead of flying out of Spokane, we may fly out of Cal-gary even though it’s a little bit farther.”

A spokesperson for TSA was not able to comment specifically on this incident. How-ever, she suggested breast cancer survivors visit www.tsa.gov/trav-eler-information/what-e x p e c t - i f - y o u - a r e -breast-cancer-survivor to prepare for screening procedures.

The website states: “TSA understands that passengers who are breast cancer survivors may have concerns about the screening process. While TSA will make every effort to ac-commodate a person’s needs and to treat all passengers with respect and dignity, all travelers must undergo security screening for airline travel so that we are all protected.”

Pat-downs are used when imaging technol-ogy “shows an anoma-ly”, and travellers can ask to be screened in a private area or with a travelling companion present, according to the website.

Security personnel can’t ask you to lift, re-move or raise clothing to reveal a breast pros-thesis, or ask you to re-move the prosthesis.

The website recom-mends that, if they are comfortable doing so, breast cancer survivors should let the security officer know.

Lastly, anyone wor-ried that they might have difficulty going through security can contact TSA at the indi-vidual airport before arrival and a customer representative will as-sist them through the screening process.

“There is no reason to be put through that, as

far as I’m concerned. What are you hiding?

There is nothing.”Lynn Haskin

From Page 1“We are very fortunate to have stu-

dents interested in building a person-al sense of the outdoors and local historians with rich history and values to share,” Joe said. “This was really an awe inspiring day. I couldn’t have asked for a more knowledgeable and experienced group to take us on a journey into the many careers and adventures of true local outdoors-men/women.”

The students heard from Doug Martin who was born and raised in Kimberley and is now retired from his career as a Park Warden in Banff Na-

tional Park. He spoke about the many different facets of his job, from search and rescue, enforcing parks laws and regulations, monitoring and manag-ing resources to public relations.

George Myers, a retired teacher who has trapped in this area for over 30 years, shared stories of trapping in the East Kootenay, and explained the role of trapping and animal conserva-tion. Joe says he also helped students set their own squirrel snares, which many enjoyed.

The students were also mentored by outdoor enthusiasts Bob and Margi Jamieson.

Two year old Nash impresses Husky Club of North AmericaSALLY MACDONALD

Townsman Staff

“Kuvuk’s First Choice”, a Siberian Husky known to his

friends as Nash, is turn-ing heads across the continent, and he has already set up dates with two lucky lady dogs.

He turned two on Tuesday, and Nash is ready to take the world by storm after placing fourth in the Bred By Exhibitor class at the Si-

berian Husky Club of America’s National Spe-cialty on October 2 to 6, 2012 in Provo, Utah.

“I took the chance of taking him down there and showing him. There is only one to four plac-ing in that class. We got fourth which is huge recognition for me as a breeder from Canada. It

gave the dog a lot of rec-ognition,” said Nash’s owner, Margie Leopold, who has six Siberian Huskies and also owns and operates Pretty Pooch in Cranbrook.

The National Spe-cialty is a prestigious dog competition where the best Siberian Hus-kies from all over the

world are shown, Leop-old said.

“Dogs come from all over the United States. There were four or five dogs from Canada, there was some dogs flown in from Lithua-nia, Italy...”

The judges are breeders themselves, making Nash’s placing

even more satisfying.“It is quite a compli-

ment as many have told me they would take him home and use him in their breeding pro-gram,” said Leopold.

To be ready for com-petition, Nash needs to look his best, so Leop-old grooms him every day.

When deciding who to give awards to, the judges look at the dog’s height and length, how it moves, and if they have correct move-ment.

“It helps if they are pretty,” said Leopold. “I have been told by judg-es he has a beautiful head and eye.”

Cranbrook may not have Canada Day cele-brations this year.

Sunrise Rotary no-tified the City of Cran-brook Leisure Services in December that it could not longer take on organizing the an-nual event.

In recent years, the Canada Day party was held at Moir Park. There was live enter-tainment, vendors, and a giant birthday cake prepared by the Sam Steele youth am-bassadors. The eve-ning was capped off by a spectacular fire-works display.

But the future of the celebration is up in the air after Cranbrook’s Sunrise Rotary Club decided not to plan the event this year.

“The decision wasn’t taken lightly. I’ve been the main or-ganizer on it for the past three years and

it’s a great event,” said Frank Vanden Broek, past president of Sun-rise Rotary.

Planning for Cana-da Day involves apply-ing for several grants, Vanden Broek ex-plained. Grants usual-ly come from the City of Cranbrook, Colum-bia Basin Trust, and the federal Canadian Heritage – Celebrate Canada fund.

But, Vanden Broek said, some of that allo-cation doesn’t come through until the last minute.

“Some of the grants, we don’t know for sure whether we have re-ceived them or how much we have re-ceived until June,” he said.

“So that has caused me a lot of sleepless nights over the past few years. If the grant didn’t come through, our Rotary Club would be on the hook for it.”

The fireworks alone, Vanden Broek

explained, cost $8,000 last year.

“It’s just that fund-ing hanging out there has been a nagging issue,” he said.

“We commit to mu-sicians and to a stage and tent rentals – all this stuff has to be lined up ahead of time.”

Vanden Broek said after hearing that Sun-rise Rotary was bow-ing out, the City’s Lei-sure Services depart-ment offered to under-write the outstanding grants. But still, Rota-ry’s time was up.

“ U n f o r t u n a t e l y , we’ve moved on and we’ve got a couple of other projects that we are looking at,” said Vanden Broek.

If you represent a community group in-terested in taking over the Canada Day orga-nization, please con-tact Leisure Services at 250-489-0220.

PAGE 6 FRIDAY, JANUARY 25, 2013

When advance copies of the “Won-derful Wizard of Oz” were sent out to in 1900 in hopes of garner-

ing prepublication reviews, both the author and the publisher got back exactly what they wished for. Almost all the evaluations were unanimously positive, most applaud-ing the book’s “creativity” and its “bright and joyous atmosphere.”

L. Frank Baum — the book’s author — found these reviews highly re-warding, having previously stated “to please a child is a sweet and lovely thing …I hope my book will suc-ceed in that way — that the children will like it.”

Baum’s publisher was also pleased, with the book selling out its initial run of 37,000 copies in just over a year. Oddly, this wasn’t their, or even Baum’s best-seller; that was Baum’s “Father Goose,” which appeared only a year earlier. At this time, the “Wonderful Wizard of Oz” was seen as “simply a good (not great) inven-tive, and commercially successful chil-dren’s book.”

They couldn’t have been more wrong. Today, more than a hundred years

later, one would be hard pressed to go to any country on the planet, mention “Oz,” and find someone who did not know what you were talking about. The same could be said about the expressions “there’s no place like home,” or “we’re not in Kansas anymore.” Even the film it inspired (made in 1939) remains one of the most beloved and successful musicals of all time; as well

as producing of the most recognizable songs ever written.

Yet even before this, “Oz” had become an unstoppable phenomenon. Before his death in 1919, Baum penned 13 sequels, which were then continued by a variety of authors, the most recent one Baum’s

great-grandson. Besides conquering ever

corner of the world, two odd aspects of the book are worth noting. The first is Ralph Ulveling, who — as director of Detroit’s Public Library System — proudly admitted that the “Won-derful Wizard of Oz” had

been not allowed in any Detroit public li-brary for the past 30 years. Ulveling’s rea-soning was there was nothing “uplifting or elevating” in any of the “Oz” books. Sadly, other librarians had followed suit, but probably not as much as Mary Hays Mar-able, a librarian from Oklahoma who ac-tually taught a course on how to remove “Oz” books from libraries.

Unlike most stories about censorship, the response to this one was swift. After securing the copyright, the ‘Detroit Times’ printed the entire book chapter by chap-ter, ensuring children would have a chance to read it. Historian Russell Nye quickly issued a statement stating ““if the message of the Oz books — that love, kindness, and unselfishness make the world a better place — seems of no value today, it is per-haps time to reassess a good many other things besides the Detroit Library’s ap-proved list of children’s books.”

Mathematician Martin Gardner proba-

bly said it best, stating “Personally, I find it easier to believe in the Scarecrow than in Mr. Ulveling.”

(It should be added that Ulveling came to reverse his position, and became a strong force for intellectual freedom throughout the United States).

The second odd thing surrounding Dorothy’s adventures happened in 1964, when Henry Littlefield published a ex-tremely well researched, yet absolutely bizarre theory about the “Wonderful Wiz-ard of Oz” having to do with America’s monetary crisis of 1890. More on this next week.

funded by Sam. Their main pur-

pose, aside from some serious big-game hunting along the way, was to dis-cover the true source of the Nile, a burning question amongst explorers since the return from Lake Victoria of Richard Burton and John Speke in 1858. The intrepid pair had discovered and named the lake which they stated as the source of the river but had failed to ascertain if the lake itself was itself fed by yet another waterway. Speke and his new partner Grant were already once again up the Nile in an attempt to settle the matter. Sam and Flo were not far behind.

Speke and Grant, generally unsuccess-ful in their attempt, met the Baker party at Gondokoro, in February, 1863, where Sam turned his ships over to Speke for their jour-ney back down the river. The Baker party struggled val-iantly on, eventually arriving at a large body of water that Sam promptly named Lake Albert. In poor health at the time of their discov-ery there followed a lengthy period of sickness and near starvation far from civilization.

Sam and Flo finally made their way downriver to Gon-dokoro, then to Khartoum and on to Paris, where they were joined by his brother James. In October, 1865, they returned at last to England and much acclaim. Sam re-ceived the Royal Geographic Society Gold Medal, a must for every noted explorer of the day, and the following year was honoured with a knighthood (although Queen Victoria refused to yield to her moral indignation at the couple’s perceived pre-mari-tal relations and would not receive Florence at court).

Sam returned again to Egypt in 1869, this time in the company of the Prince and Princess of Wales. During this visit Sir Sam was offered the position of governor-general (pasha) of the vague district of Equatoria. He accepted and was installed in April,

1869, his main task being to rid the White Nile of the slave trade. Promoted to Ma-jor-General of the Ottoman Army he (with Florence by his side) headed a large force that exerted much effort and saw some success in his task. Sam’s term as Governor of Khartoum ended in 1873 at which time Sam and Flo re-turned to England.

It was rough innings for the English in Africa: native uprisings, ambushes, battles, massacres, subterfuge, dan-ger on all sides. Sam and Flor-ence got out in time. Others did not. Charles Gordon, Sam’s successor as governor, died in 1885, along with his garrison of 7,000 soldiers and many civilians during the siege of Khartoum.

Sir Samuel and Lady Flor-ence Baker lived out their final years at Sandford Or-leigh in Devon, England. Sam

died at home on Dec. 30, 1893. “How can I live, now that my all is taken from me?” Florence cried in grief, but live she did. She had Sam cre-mated according to his wish-es, an uncommon practice in Britain at the time and yet another, and final, broadside against the old-school ways so flagrantly flaunted by the couple.

Florence continued to live and entertain at the estate until her death on March 11, 1916.

Global exploration, white-slavery, native upris-ings, royal censure with a proper hint of scandal, a knighthood, international fame and glory; pretty hard to top that yet, hark, isn’t that Sam’s dashing young brother Valentine astride that white steed there in the distance ...

Florence and Samuel Baker. Florence cut a distinctly different figure dressed in her trousers and armed with pistols while on the trail with Sam.

Samuel White Baker. Born: London, June 8, 1821, one of seven sib-lings, including his

brother James, founder of the town of Cranbrook B.C. Son of a savvy and successful busi-nessman, most notably for wise investments in the sugar trade. Intelligent, adventurous, convivial with an unending passion for the hunt.

We pick up the thread of Sam’s life in 1861, already a much-travelled man of the world, most recently returned from a long stint in Ceylon (Sri Lanka) to establish an En-glish settlement at Nuwara Eliya.

Three children and a wife now dead, four daughters in the care of his sister Minnie, and, to the dismay of many friends and peers who have heard the rumours, a new lady at hand.

Her name is Florence, a daughter of Hungarian aris-tocracy forced into slavery while a child. She is rescued from a white-slave market in the Ottoman Empire by a smitten Samuel, stolen from the very clutches of the hope-ful Ottoman of Vidin, con-veyed to safety in Romania and on to England.

Florence is an indepen-dent, intelligent, good looking young lady who refuses to be daunted by those who view her as an improper choice for one such as Samuel Baker. She refuses to play the role of Victorian hausfrau while her husband seeks adventure. They are a deucedly good match and together they will travel into the history books as soul mates of the first order.

For a number of years Sam’s burning ambition has been to explore Africa, the Dark Continent that captured so much of the English imagi-nation of the day, and so it was, in March, 1861, Sam and Flo journeyed to Cairo to begin their explorations.

Traveling up the Nile and later on land by camel and donkey with a small group of natives, battling weather, dis-ease and malnutrition, they eventually reached Khartoum in June, 1862. Following com-plicated preparations they left Khartoum in December, sail-ing up the White Nile in three ships loaded with supplies, transport animals and 96 men, 45 of whom were armed soldiers, the entire expedition

Whether on the road or at home, the Koote-nay Ice are finding ways to win.

And not just winning but doing it in nail-bit-ing fashion.

The Ice had to erase a Medicine Hat lead twice on Wednesday night, and trailed at one point in all four of their wins during a swing through the East Divi-sion last week.

Each team during that trip, including the affair against the Tigers on Wednesday night at Western Financial Place, scored first—something that the team will likely want to change.

Kootenay is heading back on the road for a pair of games in Moose Jaw and Regina this weekend, two teams they defeated last week-end while in Saskatche-wan.

“It’s good having that confidence going back there and knowing you can win in those barns,” said Ice forward Austin Vetterl, “but this time we got to have a better start and not have to come back and go into overtime and all that.”

However, despite those bad starts, Koote-nay has managed to make the comeback and

pull out the win in regu-lation, overtime or a shootout.

“Knowing that if we come into the room down 1-0 or 2-1 going into the first intermis-sion or second intermis-sion, we still believe that we can come back,” said Vetterl. “We just got to keep playing our game, get back to the simple things and eventually it’ll come for us.”

Vetterl, who was ac-quired earlier in the sea-son from Vancouver in exchange for a draft pick, has solidified his role on the third line along with fellow trade pickup Zach McPhee and Jordyn Boyd.

“I’m sort of turning into more of a PKer, third-line checker, put out at the end of the game, so I like that,” said Vetterl. “I did that last year, so I’m used to it. It’s nothing new to me.”

Landon Peel, Koote-nay’s newest defence-man, made his home debut against the Tigers, and while he didn’t make an impact on the scoresheet, he also didn’t make any egre-gious mistakes.

“It was great,” said Peel, of his first game in Cranbrook. “It felt like a home barn and we picked up the win.”

Peel is joining a hot team, as Kootenay has

won five in a row and 12 of their last 13 games, after coming up via the MJHL, where he was playing with the Swan Valley Stampeders.

Not a bad way to break back into the WHL.

“It’s a great feeling,” added Peel. “Nothing better than winning, that’s for sure.”

Peel, who was draft-ed 50th overall in the third round of the 2009

WHL Bantam Draft by the Regina Pats, faced his former team last week, and will do it again on Saturday.

“It’s real weird,” said Peel, on facing his old WHL squad twice right off the bat. “I know some of the guys and the coaching staff, but hopefully we can pull out another win against them.”

Kootenay faces Moose Jaw on Friday,

before heading to Regi-na to take on the Pats.

The Warriors are mired in a 10-game los-ing skid, while the Pats are winless in their last five outings.

ICE NOTES: Jon Martin returns to the lineup after serving a one game suspension during the tilt against the Tigers. Martin was sentenced by the WHL for a charging major on Jan. 19 in Moose Jaw.

Scott Niedermayer will have his jersey re-tired and will also be presented with this year’s WHL Alumni Achievement Award in a pre-game ceremony on Friday with his for-mer major-junior club, the Kamloops Blazers.

The Cranbrook na-tive won a Memorial Cup with the Blazers in 1992, but was also rec-ognized for his efforts off the ice a year earlier, getting the nod for the WHL and CHL Scholas-tic Player of the Year award.

Following his time in major-junior hockey, Niedermayer went on to

a highly decorated ca-reer in the NHL, win-ning four Stanley Cups with the New Jersey Devils and Anaheim Ducks.

Along with his pro-fessional accomplish-ments in the NHL, Nie-dermayer has also been on teams that captured a World Junior Champi-onship gold, a World Championship gold, the World Cup of Hock-ey and an Olympic Gold.

“Given that Scott’s remarkable career start-ed in the WHL with the Kamloops Blazers, it is only fitting that he re-ceives the highest hon-our the WHL presents to our graduate players,

the WHL Alumni Achievement Award,” said WHL Commission-er Ron Robison, in a press release. “Scott is not only a future in-ductee in the Hockey Hall of Fame, but a great role model to all current WHL players.”

The WHL Alumni Achievement Award an-nually recognizes WHL graduates who pursued professional hockey and achieved a distin-guished career in the NHL as well as an alum-nus who has obtained a post-secondary educa-tion through the WHL Scholarship Program and has moved on to a highly successful busi-ness career.

Avs host Royals in weekend volleyball action

The College of the Rockies Avalanche are back at it this weekend in a set of double header matches against the visiting Douglas College Royals.

The men’s Avalanche are in for a tough fight as the Royals are ranked at the top of the Pacwest standings.

The Avs opened their season by facing the Royals on the road down in the Lower Mainland, but Doug-las took both matches, while the Avs only took away one set.

The women’s Avalanche team has been struggling over the last few matches, but had some success against the Royals, winning one match in two while on the road along with the men at the start of the season. The ladies had a chance of sweeping the Royals, as their other match went to a tiebreaker.

The lady Royals are sitting in fifth place in the Pacwest rankings.

Volleyball action starts at 6 p.m. on Friday at the College of the Rockies gym, starting with the women, followed by the men at 8 p.m.

Matches continue on Saturday, with the women starting at 1 p.m. and the men at 3 p.m.

Harbaugh parents proud as sons face each otherJANIE MCC AULEY

Associated Press

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Jackie Harbaugh will wear a neutral-colored outfit, still to be deter-mined. Her daughter, Joani Crean, little sister to coaching brothers John and Jim Harbaugh, plans to sport all black at the Super Bowl to show no allegiances whatsoever.

“I am wearing what-ever fits that day,” Crean quipped.

The entire Harbaugh family - a close-knit, hy-per-competitive crew that also includes Indi-ana basketball coach Tom Crean - realizes it has already won big. They got their Super Bowl victory on Sunday, when each coach did his part to ensure a family

reunion in New Orleans next week, with John’s Baltimore Ravens facing off against Jim’s San Francisco 49ers in the first Super Bowl with sib-ling coaches on opposite sidelines.

One Harbaugh will haul home the Lombardi Trophy from the Big Easy.

And, no, the family members haven’t decid-ed where to sit for the Feb. 3 NFL title game at the Superdome - or at least they aren’t reveal-ing it if they have.

“We are neutral in the Super Bowl, and we are just excited that they have brought their teams to the pinnacle of sports,” Jackie Harbaugh said Thursday. “The Super Bowl is the ultimate ac-

complishment for them and for their teams and for all of the extended football family and all of the teams who have par-ticipated in this great game. We are excited for that type of thing.”

Her sons, all of 15 months apart, have tried to downplay this match-up from the moment it developed - each want-

ing to keep the focus on the players, on the field.

The Harbaughs have been inundated with well wishes and media requests since the mo-ment John’s Ravens beat New England on Sunday night a few hours after the 49ers won at Atlanta. This matchup provides the storyline of sto-rylines, one that will compete with Ravens star Ray Lewis’ last hur-rah before retirement and the emergence of second-year San Fran-cisco quarterback Colin Kaepernick (in a savvy move, he had pizza deliv-ered to the overcrowded press trailer Thursday).

Fortunate for the Har-baugh folks, they’ve been through this once before - albeit on a slightly

smaller stage: prime time on Thanksgiving night 2011. John’s Ravens won 16-6 at home.

“We experienced that last year at Thanksgiv-ing,” Jack Harbaugh said, “the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat.”

Jack visited each lock-er room after that game and observed the “smile on John’s face,” then headed over to see how Jim was handling it.

“It was quiet and sombre, and finally I saw Jim, all by himself, no one around him,” Jack said. “He still had his coaching thing on, and his hands on his head, and we realized that that is where we were need-ed. . And we know we are going to experience that next week.”

“We are neutral in the Super Bowl, and we are just excited

that they have brought their teams

to the pinnacle of sports.”

B.C. Lions trade veteran receiver Geroy Simon to RoughridersMonte Ste wart

Canadian Press

SURREY, B.C. - B.C. Lions logos were every-where, but Geroy Simon was no longer a mem-ber of the team.

As Simon sat in the Lions dressing room at the club’s training facili-ty Thursday, he was offi-cially a member of the S a s k a t c h e w a n Roughriders. Simon, the CFL’s all-time re-ceiving yards leader, was traded earlier in the day in exchange for re-ceiver Justin Harper and a third-round pick in the 2014 Canadian col-lege draft.

But as Simon said

goodbye after 12 sea-sons in a Lions uniform, the longtime face of the franchise had trouble letting go.

“This has been the toughest decision I’ve ever had to make in my professional life,” Simon said during a news con-ference. “This is a tough day. This is a very tough day. But in the end this is a decision we had to make.”

Lions general man-ager Wally Buono said the decision to trade the popular slotback was mutually agreed upon by Simon and the club after the team indicated Simon’s role with the

team was likely going to change this upcoming season. Buono also wanted Simon to take a pay cut, the extent of which Simon was un-willing to accept.

In an unusual scene, Buono sat next to Simon after trading him. Not-ing the club did not give other former players such treatment, Buono said he had to separate his emotions from his personal feelings, but the trade was difficult for him.

“When I woke up this morning, I felt like I was going to a funeral,” said Buono.

Buono said he sat

down with Simon to discuss “the next step” for the receiver’s role with the franchise, and the two sides agreed that a trade would be the best option.

“He has to fit in and he has to want to fit in,” Buono said when asked of the decision to trade Simon.

“For us to part ways is not something we enjoy,” Buono added. “But it’s a part of the sport that you have to deal with.”

A two-time Grey Cup champ and six-time CFL all-star, Simon has recorded 15,787 yards over his 14-year career.

Hamstring problems forced him to miss five games last year, limiting him to 54 catches for 700 yards and two touchdowns. It marked the first time in 10 sea-sons Simon hadn’t cracked the 1,000-yard plateau.

The six-foot, 198-pound native of John-stown, Pa., needs just 29 catches to break Ben Cahoon’s CFL record of 1,017 career receptions.

“In order for me to exhaust my talent as a football player I felt I had to move forward,” Simon said.

Once the Lions’ sea-son ended, Simon said

he was open to restruc-turing his contract but if the team didn’t want him back he’d look to continue playing else-where. Buono said Wednesday that he had given Simon and his camp permission to gauge interest in a po-tential trade.

“You have to sepa-rate the emotional side from the business side,” said Simon, who has agreed to take a lower salary in Saskatchewan. “This is what is so tough, because emotionally I’m still a B.C. Lion.”

Speaking at an avail-ability in Regina, Riders GM Brendan Taman

said Simon’s talent and experience will help his team.

“Obviously, his on-field play speaks for it-self,” said Taman. “But the other thing he’s going to bring is his leadership. His value to our team on and off the field is going to be im-mense. Geroy’s got some points to prove to a lot of people he still can play. So I think there’s a lot of bonuses to doing it.

“We know he’s 37. We’re aware of that, but (Baltimore Ravens line-backer) Ray Lewis is 37 and he’s going to the Super Bowl.”

MELBOURNE, Aus-tralia - Victoria Azaren-ka had to endure some anxious moments be-fore and after her win over American teenager Sloane Stephens.

Li Na wasn’t flus-tered at all while beat-ing No. 2-ranked Maria Sharapova.

The result is that Li will play for the Austra-lian Open title against Azarenka, who ended Stephens’ unexpected run to the semifinals that included a quarter-final upset of 15-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams.

Another player with an easy run Thursday was defending champi-on Novak Djokovic, who looked like he was con-ducting a tennis clinic in overpowering No. 4

David Ferrer 6-2, 6-2, 6-1 in just 1 hour, 29 minutes.

“I played perfectly,” he said in a post-match TV interview. “I played incredible tennis.”

Djokovic will at-tempt to win his third consecutive Australian Open when he plays the winner of Friday’s semi-final between Roger Federer and Andy Mur-ray in Sunday’s champi-onship match.

While Li’s 6-2, 6-2 win over Sharapova, who set a tournament record in dropping only nine games in five matches en route to the semis, never appeared in doubt on Thursday, Azarenka added some intrigue in the second semifinal on Rod Laver Arena.

Azarenka finished off a 6-1, 6-4 over Stephens

after a medical timeout for rib and knee inju-ries. The No. 1-ranked player had wasted five match points in the game immediately be-fore leaving the court for medical attention, then returned to break Ste-phens’ serve to end the match.

“Well, I almost did the choke of the year,” Azarenka told an on-court interviewer im-mediately after the match. “At 5-3, having so many chances I couldn’t close it out.”

Australian Open offi-cials said the tourna-ment doctor reported that Azarenka had left knee and rib injuries.

“I just felt a little bit overwhelmed. I realized I’m one step away from the final and nerves got into me for sure,” Aza-renka said.

Readers of Armstrong memoirs file lawsuit over denial of doping

Paul eliaSAssociated Press

SAN FRANCISCO - An aide to former Gov-ernor Arnold Schwarzenegger said he was so taken by Lance Armstrong’s first memoir of battling back from cancer to win the Tour de France multiple times that he immediately read it “cover to cover” and recommended it to sev-eral friends.

Now he wants his money back - and then some.

Rob Stutzman and several others who

bought Armstrong’s “It’s Not About The Bike” and “Every Sec-ond Counts” have filed a lawsuit in Sacramento federal court. It alleges Armstrong that duped them into believing the books were inspiration-al true accounts of the cyclist’s accomplish-ments done without performance-enhanc-ing drugs.

The lawsuit accuses Armstrong and the books’ publishers of committing fraud, false advertising and other wrongdoing for pub-lishing the cyclist’s ve-

hement denials that he wasn’t a cheat.

Armstrong admitted to cheating throughout his career in a televised interview last week. His lawyer Tim Herman didn’t immediately re-spond to inquiries for comment on Thursday.

The lawsuit seeks class-action status on behalf of all readers who felt misled by Armstrong’s denials of drug use in “It’s Not About The Bike,” pub-lished in 2000, and “Every Second Counts,” published three years later.

Female to male parity at Sundance Film Festivalthe presence of women.

``I feel like there’s been a seismic shift since I had my first short film at Sundance when I

was 20 and now going back today at 34,’’ said Polley, who returns this time with ``Stories We Tell.”

Equal time at Sun-dance today does not necessarily mean those women will have a smoother time finding

backers for future films, said Cathy Schulman, president of Women in Film, which promotes work by female film-

makers.On Monday, Women

in Film and Sundance organizers plan to re-lease the results of a

study tracing how well female filmmakers have fared in the last decade after showing films at the festival.

PARK CITY, Utah — For the first time, the Sundance Film Festival could do a boy-girl, boy-girl seating arrangement of directors in its U.S. dramatic competition — and not run out of girls.

The festival has 50-50 parity — eight women, eight men — among the 16 films in the com-petition, a record that female filmmakers consider to be a hopeful sign they are making progress toward equal time with males.

``It just feels like justice. Like, OK, this is the way it’s supposed to be. This reflects the population of the earth. There’s no reason why there shouldn’t be as many women making movies as men,’’ said Lynn Shelton, a Sundance reg-ular whose film ``Touchy Feely,’’ starring Rosemarie De-Witt as a massage therapist suddenly averse to touching people, is playing in the dra-matic competition.

Sarah Polley has been com-ing to Sundance with short films and features since 2000 and has seen a steady rise in

Fisherman fights $1.2 million bill

C anaDian PressOTTAWA — A small-town

Quebec fisherman who ended up stuck with a staggering $1.2-million repair bill after he decided to cut an underwater cable to save $250 worth of gear is getting another day in court.

The Supreme Court of Can-ada has agreed to hear Real Vallee’s appeal of a case which pits the crab fisherman against giants Telus and Hydro-Que-bec, owners of the cable.

Lower court judges have had kind words for the self-taught mariner, but have so far refused to let him off the hook for the bill.

``Real Vallee is a good man; a decent man; an honest man — a fisherman. However he did a very stupid thing,’’ Federal Court Justice Sean Harrington wrote in a 2011 judgment.

A subsequent appeal court panel expressed sympathy for his plight and spoke of the ``valiant efforts’’ of his lawyer.

But the judges also said Val-lee was reckless in cutting the fibre-optic line that ran under the waters off Baie Comeau and as a result his insurance was voided, leaving him per-sonally responsible.

Vallee, who now is in his 60s, has fished since he was 15. The courts were told that he had no formal training but picked his fishing grounds by experience.

ARIES (March 21-April 19)You could encounter a misun-derstanding or a problematic situation. If you let yourself get sucked into it, it could ruin a creative moment. Commu-nication accelerates, as your personal life weaves into your professional life. Don’t worry -- you can handle it. Tonight: Let the fun begin.TAURUS (April 20-May 20)What you thought about doing today just might not happen. Others’ demands or interests very well could distract you. You might feel a need to turn your attention elsewhere. Friends and loved ones do appreciate your efforts. Tonight: Let the good times rock and roll.GEMINI (May 21-June 20)Speak you mind, but realize that not everyone has a similar opin-ion. Be open to other ideas or to someone else putting down what you believe to be a nug-get of wisdom. You’ll still get your way. It is hard to turn you down. Tonight: Out and about,

strutting your stuff.CANCER (June 21-July 22) You could discover that a cre-ative idea falls flat. Let go, and let others find a different response or solution. Focus on what you enjoy. Make a point of going out to buy that special present or token of affection. Express your caring and do not hold back. Tonight: Your treat.LEO (July 23-Aug. 22)A little reticence disappears quickly. You could make a big deal out of a problem, or you could decide to let it go. Others are only too happy to meet with you, both professionally and personally. You don’t need to make something a bigger issue than it is. Tonight: Prime time!VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)Honor your energy level. If you feel discouraged by a conver-sation or a situation, try not to give it to much attention, especially as there is little you can do until later. Get into a project that involves interacting less with others. Tonight: Make plans, but keep them low-key.LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)You might have the best inten-

tions and want to keep a meet-ing all business, yet you might discover a problem. Acknowl-edge what is going on behind the scenes. You might not even have a choice, as it is obvious that someone intrigues you. Tonight: TGIF! You need a break. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)When others flake out, who steps up to the plate? You don’t need to look around. You are at your best when you are in the position of handling a problem. You like feeling empowered, and you resent situations that are out of control. Tonight: A must appearance.SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)Deal with others directly, and open up to someone about what you feel is a difficult situ-ation. You might hear that you are creating the problem in your head. Try revising your thinking, and you will see the situation from a different perspective. Tonight: Be a duo.CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)Listen to your inner voice, and you might realize that you’re not on the right course for you. Others might disagree. At what

point do you decide to go about this matter alone? Don’t worry -- a partner or business asso-ciate will come to the rescue. Tonight: Join a close friend.AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)Defer to others, and listen to their fears. A boss might be very difficult, and your approach might not be appropriate. Oth-ers’ suggestions don’t seem to work, either. You might want to deliberate carefully on an im-portant decision. Tonight: Say “yes” to an invitation.PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20)You can move through a project quickly once you confront the first obstacles. Good will and support among those who are involved does make a big dif-ference. Be more upbeat, and a family member or loved one won’t be able to say no. Tonight: Stay mellow. Dear Annie: I am in the process of con-verting to Judaism. Among other things, this involves eating only kosher food. Initially, it was difficult, but I know that doing this brings me closer to understanding more of my new religion.

My problem is that most of my friends, including some Jewish friends, have an is-sue with my eating habits. They say eating kosher is “outdated,” or they imply that I think I’m better than they are. They active-ly discourage my efforts. This confuses me because I don’t scold my friends for eating cheeseburgers or pork, and I never insist on any special treatment.

Conversion is not an easy process, and I’d like the support of my friends, but it’s hard to keep my head up sometimes, especially during meals together. How do I approach this? Do I need new friends? -- Questioning in California

Dear Questioning: Maybe. Your friends think conversion will change who you are and the relationship they have with you. They feel marginalized by your new religious interest and are trying to undermine your convictions. This is all about them and their needs. If you are truly committed to conver-sion, you should not be so easily derailed. Please talk to your rabbi. If you attend ser-vices at a synagogue, see whether they have a social group for those in your age bracket. You are more likely to make new friends and find support there.

Dear Annie: Some years ago, my wife and I met a lovely couple while on a trip in Germany. We had such a good time together that we made arrangements for the four of us to take other trips. We kept in contact with cards, phone calls and emails. On the occa-sions where we traveled to their city, we had lunch with them.

We hadn’t heard from them in a while, so I sent a card that came back stamped “Deceased.” We don’t read the obituaries from their city, so we have no idea whether both of them died or one died and the other moved, or what happened.

This couple had several children who may have known of our friendship, although I never learned the children’s names. It sure-ly would be nice if their survivors would browse through the couple’s address book and let the contacts know of their passing. -- Miss Them in Minnesota

Dear Minnesota: This is a situation that comes up whenever someone dies. The sur-vivors do not always think of going through the deceased’s address book -- written or electronic -- and sending notes to those list-ed. But it would be a kindness to do so and something the deceased surely would have wanted. You can look online for your friends’ obituaries and any other information that might indicate how to contact one of their children. We hope you find out what hap-pened and have the opportunity to express your condolences.

Dear Annie: I read the letter from “Too Many Leftovers” about people who don’t RSVP to invitations. It encouraged me to share my experience.

Our two daughters were married in the same year. The first wedding brought the same issue of the lack of receiving RSVPs. When it came to the second wedding, I had our new son-in-law use his calligraphy skills to make a nice sign that read “For those who did not RSVP.” I placed the sign on the gift ta-ble next to a jar of peanut butter, a knife and some soda crackers.

I don’t know why my wife and the moth-er of the groom didn’t see the humor. I have shared this with several people, and the men always think it’s hilarious. -- Father of the Brides

I had a conversation re-cently with a young woman in which she asked, “Would it be okay if I just come to your church and explore? I don’t really know what I be-lieve or think, and I don’t have it all together. Could I just come?”

We live in a world which says we need to have it all together. The commercial advises us, “Never let them see you sweat.” Our society has a real difficulty with being vulnerable.

Some of us can’t admit our need because we want to project an air of success. It’s scary to be vulnerable. What if someone else notices, or takes advantage of us? Or maybe it just seems that life would be even tougher if we admitted that we’re not on top of everything. I know I’ve felt that way at times.

Some of us can’t admit we

don’t have it all together be-cause we think that others need us to have it all togeth-er, and we don’t want to let them down. We’re not sure they’d love us if we admitted that we’re having a tough time. I’ve felt that way at times, too.

And some of us know we don’t have it all together, but we can’t admit it because we’re pretty sure that it’s not acceptable to do so. What would people think? We want to appear to be suc-cessful, and so we keep up the front. It’s exhausting work, but we can’t see any other options. What’s the al-ternative? I’ve felt that way at times, too.

Even to think about ad-mitting that we don’t have it all together can be a little terrifying. It’s so hard to ask for help. It’s so hard to admit that our lives aren’t going

well. It’s so scary to open ourselves up that way.

But when we do, when we screw up the courage to admit that we’re having some difficulties, when we dare to become vulnerable, three things happen.

First, there is an amazing sense of freedom when we admit the truth. It comes as a relief when it finally comes out. We no longer have to pretend that we have it all together. We no longer have to work so hard to keep up a front.

The second thing is that we finally receive the help which we need. When we

dare to admit that we need help, it comes. We reach out, and others respond, whether it be family and friends or professionals in the caring professions. When that hap-pens, we are on our way to becoming whole again.

The third thing that hap-pens is that as we slowly be-come whole again, we dis-cover that we don’t just re-ceive it for ourselves, but we are set free to offer healing and grace to others. We be-come more empathetic, more caring, more loving ourselves. We become part of the healing process for other people.

Rather than just talking about it, let me find the cour-age to become vulnerable here. A dozen or so years ago, I was diagnosed with clinical depression. As a priest, I didn’t feel that I could let others know of my

struggles. After all, my role was to be a helper, not to be someone who needed help.

But it came to the point where I no longer had a choice. I couldn’t hold it to-gether, and my world came crashing down around me. I was clinically depressed, and ready to say goodbye to it all.

It was sheer grace that someone found me in time. In the healing process, I ex-perienced those three things. The first thing I felt, other than a real sense of embar-rassment and shame, was a profound sense of relief. I wasn’t alone anymore. I didn’t have to worry about keeping up appearances. My dark secret was out. Guess what? The world didn’t end. In some real sense, a new world was born.

I also got the help I need-ed, from psychiatric nurses, family and friends. The pro-

cess of healing could begin, now that I had no choice but to say I needed it. When I reached that moment of des-peration, I was able to admit I couldn’t do it by myself.

And thirdly, my experi-ence has made me a better priest. I have more sympathy for the difficulties of life ex-perienced by others. I know that we are bound together in our common humanity, and that we are deeply loved for who we are, not for what we do or who we might be-come.

None of this is easy. It’s pretty scary to admit our need and to become vulner-able. But I also know that’s when my life began again.

I know I don’t have it all together. And that’s okay.

Faith is for those who don’t have it all together

The following essay was written by my fa-ther George Moody (1899–1988) a few years before the onset of World War II. I found the tiny, yellowing handwritten pages after Dad’s death, when my brothers and I

were clearing out the family home. I offer Dad’s thoughts here as a continuation of the con-versation begun on these pages by Bud Ab-bott and the late Man-Woman. Occasional edits are shown in

[square brackets]. Dad was a Cockney,

the eldest of nine chil-dren born to Edwin and Louisa Moody in Strat-ford in the east end of London. His father was a laborer whose fondness for pubs often left the

family wanting. Like most working class chil-dren of the time, Dad left school at the age of 14 and went out to work. He got a job as a mould apprentice in a foundry and worked there until 1916, when he joined the

British Army at the age of 17. He served two years in France and Bel-gium during the final years of the First World War, and then signed on for a further four years, which he spent on the Northwest Frontier of India, then still very much a colony of the British Empire. When he left the army, Dad signed on with a British mer-chant ship but under-took only one voyage as a seaman, travelling back to India and other Far Eastern ports. Back home in London and now 27, he joined En-gland’s National Fire Brigade Service. His ca-reer as a professional fireman spanned 30 years, and included the 1940 bombing blitz that left London ablaze during the Second World War.

Throughout my life I knew Dad as an ardent atheist, but never thought to question why he held views so contrary to the norms of the day. Now I know.

Peter R. MoodyKimberley

GeorGe Moody circa 1937

My father was a navvy and an atheist, and yet

although there were nine of us, brothers and sisters, I never once knew him to try to force his views on us. I used to

say my prayers daily, I read the Bible, yet my fa-ther never ridiculed me or the religion I believed in. At school with the rest of my class I have sung “Be Present at Our Table [Lord],” gone home to no dinner — or one of bread and marg — returned to school and sang “We Thank Thee Lord” on an empty stomach, and still believed.

Why?The answer now is

simple: I was not able to think for myself. I be-lieved as a matter of course in the particular religion which had been thrust upon me at birth. That is the trouble with religion; before we are old enough to say “aye” or “nay” we are forced into religion which var-ies according to the faith of our parents and it grows up with us, ac-cepted by us as a matter of course, just as much as the colour of our eyes or nationality. [In my fa-ther’s day, and mine too for that matter, English law required that each school day begin with a “corporate act of wor-ship,” which took the form of a brief Church of England service with the whole school in at-tendance.]

At the age of 18 I was caught up in that terri-ble catastrophe, the [First] World War, and in France saw things that should have convinced

anyone that such a thing as a benign deity “who so loved the world,” etc. was an impossibility. Yet still I believed, although it was mainly fear maybe that there might be one, and I should keep on his right side. It was while on leave during the [1918] Armistice that I started thinking.

Passing the spot in Stratford where some [many] years ago a number of brave souls were burned at the stake because of their reli-gious opinions, I pon-dered why it should be. These people, I thought, maybe they were Catho-lics, maybe Protestant, but they all worshipped the same God. And yet that same God whom I had been taught was all good, all powerful, had from his place on high witnessed this scene and, in spite of his om-nipotence and love for all, permitted it.

[During World War I the soldiers on each] side had been urged on by their priests, telling them that God was on their side and victory would be for the righ-teous. Well, as we know now, neither side won and in the next war, which appears mighty imminent [World War II began Sept. 3, 1939], they will still be saying, “Attaboy, you are win-ning” or words to that effect.

I thought also of the time when Jesus was sent to save the world and how unfair it was that he had been put down in that one spot on the globe to teach the people of God, while the rest of the world had to go on believing in their own particular deity. And then I thought if the world was in need of revelation, it is now.

Millions of lives had been sacrificed in all manner of horrible ways, many millions more were crippled for life, blinded or insane, and all for what? What a fine opportunity had been missed by the heavenly father to prove to the world that there was someone.

I became an atheist on the spot, in a matter of seconds. I had cast

aside a belief held for nearly 20 years without question and in that moment I felt like a man who has cast aside fet-ters that had been hold-ing him down so long as he could remember. Never once have I re-gretted that action.

Just before my father died he sent for me and my next eldest brother and said when we ar-rived, “My boys, I’m dying and I want you to know that I’m dying the way I lived. I’ve never prayed and I’m not going to start now.” I an-swered, “That’s the idea, Dad, I hope I’ll be the same when my turn comes.” To which he re-plied, “That’s right, my boy, and when it does come you won’t fear death anymore than I do now. There’s nothing in it.” And he threw out

his hand in a gesture that one uses in the army to signify a “wash-out.”

How I wanted to grasp his hand and tell him I was proud of him, but we are an unde-monstrative family in regard to affection for each other. It was diffi-cult to believe that death was so close upon him.

He died soon after-wards. I could not tell him how glad I was that he had not recanted at the last. I had heard it said so many times that

even an atheist turns to God when he is dying that it was quite a relief to me to see my father game to the end.

[When I was an adult, my father told me that his mother pleaded with her husband on his deathbed to pray and save his soul. Her strong belief and unwavering faith were my father’s earliest religious influ-ences, reinforced by his eight years of schooling.]

I believe now that or-ganized religion is a racket; that’s a hard

name I know, but think of the farmer who had to sell his crop to pay the required tithe to the church [of England]? He might have been an un-believer or a Catholic but he was forced by law to support the Church of England. And nowadays, through tax exemptions, so must I and thousands of others who don’t believe. Based upon my contact with the working class-es I believe that over fifty per cent do not re-ally believe in God and

most of the others are apathetic.

[A fellow at work once] said, “I can’t look at the sun in a blue sky, the stars at night, or watch the waves beat-ing on the seashore, without believing that some master mind is re-sponsible for it all. Nor can I hear the song of the birds nor the laugh-ter of little children without being certain that there is a good God above to whom we owe all this.”

I can well under-

stand a man feeling that way about the beauty in nature – it certainly is wonderful – but have you seen the effects of tornadoes or bombs from these same skies? The bodies washed up on seashores, that the waves have destroyed? Have you heard the [crying of people] dying from cancer? Or seen the face of a starving child who has never known what laughter is?

Who is responsible for all of that?
