The HSC is used as way to mark the end of 13 years of schooling. Those students who have managed to complete the HSC are awarded a certificate that gives them credit to show that they have studied subjects to a high standard. This credential is recognised worldwide and in Australia it used with the ATAR (Australian Tertiary Assessment Rank) to allow students entry into universities and set them on a journey to a career. In order to prepare our students in the junior years for the HSC, we have introduced end of year exams in these years 7-11. By exposing students to exam settings such as sitting in the hall in a low risk situation, they will get used to formal exams and decrease anxiety in later years. Students will learn that formal assessments are just a normal part of schooling and these happen at the end of a semester.

We do understand that students can demonstrate their knowledge in a number of ways, which is why our assessment schedules show that each subject has a variety of assessments, for example a practical test, a research report, a talk, a multimodal presentation or a practical project. Preparation is an important part of the lead up to an exam, as a student who knows their subject will be much more relaxed and better able to cope. Regular revision is the best way to embed knowledge, learning small chunks during the year and then going over notes to refresh the subject is a sure way to maximize your learning. Students should be preparing for exams by reading over their notes or textbooks and making summaries. Re – reading these summaries and answering questions will help embed this knowledge. The teachers will point them in the right direction with revision exercises or exam revision sheets. On the night before the exam, make sure your child gets enough sleep. If a student sacrifices sleep to study, the student will not function properly on the exam day. On the day of the exam, supply a good breakfast for your child: it is essential that the brain has enough food to function, so it can do its job. Just before the exam, encourage your child to practice breathing and staying calm, a stressed out brain forgets things. We want students to be relaxed and remember all they have learnt in class. Remind students to have all equipment for exams, like pens (a couple), a highlighter, pencil, ruler, eraser, sharpener and for maths a calculator and geometry set (if required). All these should be in a clear plastic bag. Help students to arrive at school on time, it is not good for a student to see that all students are ready and sitting down and they are just arriving. Students will be told to leave your phone and smart watch in their bag, if you are worried about this, ask them to leave them at home for the day. During the exams, have a drink of water. Remember to read the questions and just do your best. Luck has nothing to do with success. Hard work and preparation is the best way to achieve. Exam schedules will be emailed to individual year groups. Hayley Emmerton Principal

It’s starting to get warmer, which means students wear summer uniform for terms 4 & 1.

A school uniform teaches students to take pride in their appearance, and when everyone is dressed the same, worrying what you look like is not so important.

We appreciate your support in taking pride in our uniform by insisting that students do not wear jumpers of varying colour or with hoods, sports leggings or track pants or sneakers to school.

Girls White shirt with logo, (may wear a white undershirt with no logo visible) Junior summer tunic / senior skirt School poly cotton jumper / School soft shell jacket / Blazer Black leather shoes

Boys White shirt with logo, In summer, senior boys wear ties Boys shorts or trousers with white socks School poly cotton jumper / School soft shell jacket / Blazer Black leather shoes

The uniform shop opens every Tuesday 7.30am-1:30pm, Thursday 11:30am-3.30pm Phone: 9453 5000 Email: [email protected] See over for order form

Year 12 Report It feels like only yesterday but at the same time, a lifetime ago, that I made my very first address to the Class of 2019 at their Year 7 orientation. I was so excited to meet them all but petrified that I had no clue what I was doing. Then they all filed into the hall and my heart was instantly filled. They were what was missing from my career all those previous years. I have always loved being an educator and get so much joy out of students learning something for the first time. But being a Year Adviser, wow, that is something else. It has been one of the hardest yet most rewarding things I have ever done in my life.

My favourite thing about being a Year Adviser without a doubt would be the relationships I have made with all the students. Through thick and thin, I have loved that I have been able to play such a variety of roles such as their big sister, parent, teacher, mentor and friend. There are so many specific moments that I will honestly cherish forever. Here I was, the Year Adviser, meaning to look after their welfare, when in fact, they looked after me all these years. They have helped me to grow so much as a person and that is something that I will always be grateful for.

The school community is so grateful for all the contributions this cohort have made over the years. With their participation in extra-curricular activities, efforts in fundraising, raising awareness for different causes and helping to start the school environment club. They have made such a positive impact in the school and their mark will be remembered for many years to come. Thank you to Mrs Woskanian for her constant support and guidance for the cohort. She is an extremely patient and dedicated Deputy Principal who helped mentor so many of the students. Thank you to Mr Garry Pearson for spending his last years teaching as the Assistant Year Adviser. Thank you to Miss Morris for being the Assistant Year Adviser for the past two years and stepping in at the end of last term to take over for me while I was on maternity leave. I also want to take a moment to thank the parents. You have raised such incredible men and women that you should be so very proud of. Whilst they aren’t perfect, they come pretty close. They are filled with kindness, hard work, humbleness, human decency, loyalty and lots of fun and laughter. Congratulations Year 12. Whilst you are still completing your HSC exams, the end is so incredibly close. The staff, students and extended school community are extremely proud of you and wish nothing but the best for your future endeavors. Remember to Be Kind, Have Courage, Work Hard, Travel Often and Love Yourself. Mrs Kiara Williams Year 12 Adviser

Year 12 Update Year 11 is finished and the new Year 12s have hit the ground running. All Year 12s were issued with an organisation pack on the first day back that included important information about HSC as well as some handy tips on study and the need for routine. There has been a definite shift in the cohort's approach to starting Year 12 as well as many deciding to drop subjects to concentrate on those in which they feel they will succeed better in. Students will receive their Year 11 reports in the coming weeks and are encouraged to start building study groups to assist in consolidating their learning. All students should now have completed a study timetable using the template from the organisation pack, inputting their extra-curricular activities first as well as work commitments, blocking out time for each of their subjects to complete their timetable. The importance of routine and self-care were reinforced to students and they are all reminded that they should speak to myself, Ms Walters (DP) or their mentor should they have concerns. A study routine will also assist students in Year 12 to organise their time in preparation for their first HSC assessments this term. Some students in Year 12 are already on their HSC journey with the French students completing their HSC in coming days. KHHS teachers and Year 12 students wish them all the very best of luck for this exam. No doubt Year 12 students are eager to receive their jerseys which should arrive in the next couple of weeks. 2019 Premier's Debating Competition Both the Year 7&8 and the Year 9&10 Premier's Debating competitions have now concluded for this year with many stimulating debates and a challenging competition for our teams. In June, our students participated in a full day workshop with our very own debating coach Ms M. Ashton where they were well versed in strategies and techniques for constructing convincing arguments and also took part in a number of mini debates to reinforce what they learned throughout the day. Over the debating season, our teams debated Chatswood HS, Mackellar GHS, and North Sydney GHS as well as other Killarney teams as part of the round robin competition for our zone. The students represented our school valiantly and enjoyed the social as well as the academic side of debating... oh, and also the refreshments! Our Year 7 team debated that we should introduce compulsory parenting courses.

The Year 7 team were Marianne Baudin, Nathael Prolon, Ben Phelps, Noah Lewis, Luka Oreb and Jack Toohey.

The Year 8 team were Emily Offner, Gabby Andrade Wood, Nathan Roberts, Diane Luong, Joshua Nam and Angus Johnson. Our Year 9 team - argued against Mackellar that voting should be compulsory and against our own year 10 team that sports should not be co-ed. The Year 9 team were Luisa Gualda de Farias, Anna Colquhoun, Jade Cunningham, Ned Hoefnagels, Lily Brooke and Seiya Saito. Our Year 10 team - challenged Chatswood that Australia should become a republic. The Year 10 team were Mia Klein, Julius Whitfield, Eliza Lamb and Lucas Joffily. All students have been presented with certificates and have received a blue killa for their contribution in representing our school. Mrs M Cunningham KHHS Debating Co-ordinator

Duke of Edinburgh Award

Some reminders as we approach the end of the year. Keep your on-line record book up-to-date. There are many students who are approaching completion of their Award, so they should get their sections fully set-up and log all their hours. Reports on the Qualifying hike also need to be written and uploaded. Unfortunately, every year there are participants who do the hard yard yet fail to log stuff and so never receive their Award. Don't be one of those! There is help to be had from Mr Willard or Mr Collins, or else talk with one of the many past participants who have successfully completed their Award. Students should think about enrolling in the Award for 2020. There will be information meetings in a few weeks, so check school notices regularly. Before the end of Term 4 the current Year 8 will be able to submit an expression of interest for Bronze 2020. This will speed up enrolment and ensure students don’t miss out if the demand is too great. Existing participants should also think about whether they want to move on to a higher level. Students in Years 10-12 who have not done Bronze but are interested in starting Silver or Gold can also investigate options for directly entering one of those levels. Well done Killarney Heights High School Bands. Congratulations to the school Big Band for a fantastic performance at the Manly Jazz Festival. Having qualified for the first time to perform on the prestigious John Speight Stage our young jazz enthusiasts put in a faultless display. Watched by a large and enthusiastic audience the band was led by conductor Derek Barg and featured Nic Jeffries in the saxophone section. Top notch solos included Shkan Kutlutan on sax, Louis Wishart on trumpet and Damon Jakovics on trombone. Special mention should go to the brilliant vocal work by Hannah Greenland and Charlie Maher on debut. Manly Jazz is a wonderful event particularly for our departing Year 12 band members as they now concentrate on their upcoming exams. The rest of the Band program continues to be busy including a Blue Mountains Tour by our Concert Band, Stage and Chamber Ensemble. Special thanks for the parent and teacher support. KHHS Spring Trivia night – a great night had by all

On Sat 21st of Sept the Killarney School Hall was transformed into Spring Cheer for the P&C Social Trivia Night. Over 120 parents, friends and teachers attended and decorated their tables in the Theme 'Sprint into Spring'. There were Spring Chickens, No Principals, and Anti-Histamines to name a few.

The competition for the Trivia was fierce, congrats to the Winners – Spring Chickens (a group of Year 12 families, so a great way to finish off their time at the school)! There were also prizes for best dressed table, lucky door prize, table games, a coin toss competition – the most heavily contested event of the night was the paper plane competition (which was won in the dying minutes by a stealth entry).

We also had many raffle prizes and some silent auction items which were donated generously by parents and the businesses listed below. The raffle for 2 money trees with scratchies was well subscribed to and we’ve heard that one of the winners of this did manage to scratch their way to a good profit.

Thank you to all the guests attending and making the night a success! In addition to being a fun social evening, it was also an opportunity to do some fundraising for the Intensive Learning Space for the school with almost $5000 being raised. We’re sure you all had as much fun as we did and hopefully this type of event will become a regular feature on our social calendar.

If you have taken any photos on the night, we would like to share them via drop box. Can you email them please send them to KHHS P&C.

Of course an evening like this doesn’t happen without some work behind the scenes, so a big shout out and thank you to Elke Borges, Karen Lambert, Maki Takken and Karen Willetts for pulling together this event. Maki did an outstanding job of hosting on the evening.

Thank you to the school community for the response for donations from each of the year groups. Given the amount of donations made, we were able to collate a few hampers which are being raffled off to give all families and friends the opportunity to win. We are now operating an on-line raffle with over $1,200 in prizes – get your tickets here: https://www.raffletix.com.au/?ref=6gwf9. Please pass the link onto other family and friends. Again all the funds raised will contribute to the Intensive Learning Space.

The P&C would like to acknowledge and offer a huge Thank You to our sponsors for their generous donations and encourage all our school community to support these local businesses:
