Give ‘em the bootIn this unpredictable weather the boot is a key part of your wardrobe knee highs can be a great addiction as they can be worn with skirts, tucked into jeans or leggings.Think about the size of your calves and how best to accentuate them and accentuate them. If you have big calves, stay away from boots that hit at or below the calf and find a pair that have a some stretch to them. Loose boots will tend to make your legs appear bigger. For thin

legged women, a bulkier material and loose knee high boots should do the trick. A pair of slouch boots is always a good choice as they will make your legs look full. Skinny jeans are the perfect jean for any kind of boot, because they fit so nicely underneath without having to forcefully tuck, fold and bunch. When wearing them with your ankle boots, you can tuck them in or cuff them just above the top of the boot.

Happy November to all our readers!

Only a few weeks away until the big guy comes to town, and I for one cannot wait. I have some great gift ideas in this month’s blog for him & her to get help you tick off your list. And best of all, they are all available online, so you can shop from the comfort of your couch!

Oil-aillujah!Firstly, I would like to talk hair oil. As I mentioned in last month’s issue, I have tried and tested a lot of hair oils, and I would like to give you all a brief few points on my top three favourites.

1 Kerastase Elixir Ultime

This beautiful product is made of maize, argan, camellia, and pracaxi oils. Its light textured oil melts into your hair and creates a silky and weightless look. I have been using this oil for

over a year, and I am only on my second bottle. This stuff lasts for ages! I use it on my hair about twice a week, and one small pump into the hand is enough. It can be used before shampooing as a treatment, in damp hair before blow drying/styling, or after styling as a nice sleek finisher. A star product ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥

Available from Peter Mark salons nationwide. See www.kerastase.co.uk for stockists.

2 Nuxe Huile ProdigieuseI fell head over heels in love

with the smell of this product. Made with extracts of almonds and honey, this oil is almost good enough to put on your porridge!! It can be used on the face, body and of

course hair. It works in a similar way to the Kerastase Elixir, however I sometimes found it a little too oily for my hair because my hair is quiet thin. If you have thicker hair, this product is perfect for you. It is ideal as finishing oil after styling to give your hair a glossy look. It also lasts for ages, and comes in a good sized bottle. I love using this oil after a shower on the skin to lock in moisture. Nuxe also do a similar product which has a slight shimmer in it. This is great for people who may not like wearing false tan, but like a natural glow on the skin.♥ ♥

Available in O ‘Connells Pharmacy Kilkenny and selected stores nationwide. See www.nuxe.com for stockists.

3 Olive OilIf you are more credit crunch

than credit card, then reach for the kitchen press and grab the olive oil. It is an excellent alternative to splashing out on

expensive hair oil. It won’t smell as nice, but it pretty much works in the same way. Warm a table spoon of olive oil and massage gently massage through the hair and into the scalp. Pop on a shower cap and leave to soak in for 30 minutes and shampoo off. Olive oil leaves your scalp squeaky ♥ ♥

Presents galore! Nothing beats plonking yourself on the couch beside the fire, and

getting some retail therapy all at the same time. Get your mouse at the ready..www.mankind.co.uk

Have him looking prim and proper over the holiday season with some fabulous grooming products from mankind.co.uk (Don’t you just love the name?)

Toast and Jam Body Wash €6.95

Style in the CityKilkenny held its very first Fashion Week in October of 2012. The fashionistas of Kilkenny got together to show the city and the country what Kilkenny has to offer in the style stakes. With a crack team of leading fashion retailers and Midas PR we were treated to a week long of fashion. The week started off with a Gala Fashion Event in Lyrath Estate Hotel which was sold out, style events were held all over the city, SPECtacular Styling events held by Karen Morrissey and a fashion train. We of course attended so here is a snapshot of some of the fashion events!

Well done on your Olympic achievement it was the first time we had a 4x400m Women’s relay team in the Olympics its a great achievement.

Thank you. I was delighted that the team qualified. We did actually have a team at the Sydney Olympics. However the qualification process changed in the past few years and we had to be ranked in the top 16 teams in the World to Qualify. We were 13th before and after the Games. I think that is a great achievement for a country of our size.

Being at your level how much sacrifices do you have to make?

Training for the Olympics for me meant putting almost everything else on hold. I finished college a number of years ago, but have only be able to work part time since graduating as I had to fit in training and competing. I moved to Canberra in Australia in 2009 and have been mostly based out of there in the lead up to these games.

Catriona your sister also qualified you must have very proud parents.

Yeah Catriona joined me in Australia this year to train for London, so we were all delighted that she was successful and made the team.

You recently qualified as a doctor how hard was the study along with the training for the Olympics?

I qualified in 2009. I had taken a gap year in 2008 for the Beijing Games, so I qualified a year after my class. Since then I have managed to fit in my intern year and part time work between running seasons. UCD were very helpful when I was a student there and since qualifying I have worked in Australia and Ireland. The Irish Medical Council have also been very helpful and accommodating.

What are your plans for the future, will you go for Rio 2016?

I have just returned to full time work in Ireland. I’ve not made any decision yet about competing, but I know it will become more difficult now that I’m working again. Certainly at the moment Rio seems like a long time away, but its too soon to say for sure.

Joanne CuddihyWhat advice would you give to any young athletes out there wishing to fulfil their dream of becoming an Olympian?

I would say to stick with it. If it really is your dream, then the only way you can make it come true is with hard work and persistence. Not everyone can make it but unless you try you will never know, and in all likelihood you are capable of far more than you realise. Always dream big and believe in yourself.

What’s it like being in the public eye and do you find the media adds pressure?

I think we get relatively little attention compared to other sports people. The support we get from home, especially around the Olympics is really amazing. And the media for the most part reflects this positive support. Of coarse there are some negative things said and written at times, but I try not to take this personally. The sudden attention during the Olympics definitely does add pressure but really that is part of what makes it such an exciting experience. I am definitely happy to return to being more anonymous after the Games.

We wish Joanne and Catriona all the best with their sporting careers.

We caught up with Kilkenny’s own Joanne Cuddihy after this year’s London 2012 Olympic games to talk about juggling life with training for the games, Rio 2016 and tips for hopeful young athletes out there.

So you can’t decide whether to change those kitchen units that you’ve been staring at for the last 10 odd years. Or maybe you’ve moved into a new home and you’re working on putting your own “stamp” on the kitchen area. You need to pick something that will stand the test of time, both practically and looks good.

Brightly coloured kitchens are very popular at the moment. The kitchen appliances can be optionally integrated, that would depend on your preference. The high gloss units give a contemporary, smooth clean finish to the look, which especially if your kitchen is in a small area, gives the illusion of space. Of course these units can be adaptable to any size space, it all depends on what you need.

The glass splash back is on trend, very practical and of course, easy to clean and in any colour you’d like! If you decide to go for a granite work top why not use a matching back?

The tile and ceramic splash back are still often requested but not as in demand as in the past.

LED lighting on the ceilings and around and underneath the cabinets really compliments the kitchen units, gives the kitchen a warm welcome feel. These are very economical on electricity also.Although some of the wood units such as cherry wood are in decline demand wise, the oak, walnut and ash are still popular. Contrast is also trending, people tend to choose either a dark affect units with brighter walls, this would be ideal in a large area, or bright units to brighten the area, this would work well in a smaller space. Prices for fitting a new kitchen will vary depending on the square footage of the area, and what type of units that will be needed, your kitchen maker will advise you on that aspect. Do remember to include any new appliances to the overall pricing. So to help make that final decision to take the plunge and make that change; here are some Kilkenny based kitchen makers who throughout the years come highly recommended due to the high

standard of work man ship. You will be guaranteed a good quality finish with any of these businesses. The following also have show rooms, so you can go and look at all of them if you can, as they can all have different brands of kitchens, do the research, then choose your style to suit your house and pocket. Happy kitchen shopping! Des Kearney. (DEsigns) 056 7751833, www.sinnottskitchens.ie, www.castlecabinets.ie are just a few of the cabinet makers in Kilkenny.

If you’re content with your kitchen unit quality and layout but would like to change the colour perhaps, we have just the right idea for you. As the saying goes “it’s amazing what a lick of paint can do!” It can make a complete difference to your kitchen! Stephen Renehan is a hand painted kitchen unit specialist, whose work is of the highest quality and can guarantee that you will get many more years from your fresh new kitchen. Specific preparation and paint used will unsure durability. All colours available. See www.srpainting.ie, for examples of his work.

Leisure Culture, Interview

Its Kilkenomics time again! As the name suggests, its economics and comedy all rolled into one. If like me, you find the whole economic crisis a bit bewildering and hard to understand, then this is the festival for you.

Now in its third year in Kilkenny, the festival will run from the 1st November to the 5th November 2012, we see a return of some of the best comedians and economists, who will wittily thrash out the economic events of the moment in a question and answer style. It’s a serious topic but lightened and simplified with humour.

The line up will include economists such as; David McWilliams, Max Keiser, Megan Green, and comedians; Barry Murphy, Karl Spain, Neil Delemere. This is just the tip of the iceberg, there are a lot more of both comedians and economists in the line up.

It will be in a relaxed setting, in easily accessible venues all over Kilkenny. Various topics will be discussed, such as the growing unemployment, the progress of the euro, thriving countries we can learn from; are just an example. It’s the perfect way to learn about the

economy in lay man’s terms. It even caters for the younger generation, as there will be a “Junior Kilkenomics” show in The Set Theatre, Thursday 1st November at 2pm. This show is structured to help leaving cert students to understand what’s ahead of them after the exams and results; of course the odd joke is thrown in too.

Some of the various venues include The Pembroke Hotel, the Set Theatre, Cleere’s Pub, are but a few.

Check out www.kilkenomics.com for the full list of venues and shows. Prices for the shows start at an incredibly reasonable €5, which can be bought online, but if you would like to go to more than one event there is the “Kilkenomics Festival Ticket Package” where you really get good value for money. It entitles you to the following

Every month we’ll look at where you can get a bite to eat, hot beverage and unique food that can only be found in Kilkenny.

Irish Parsnip & Red Apple SoupThe days are getting cooler so we all like a bit of comfort food to keep us warmed up. Here is a soup recipe that is perfect for this season especially if you have a few apples growing in your back garden. Soups are quick and easy and are perfect for lunch or as a starter for dinner. You could substitute Carrots for the Parsnips if you aren’t too fond of them!

1 tablespoon of Butter1 pound of Parsnips, thinly sliced1 pound of Apples, peeled/cored/sliced1 chopped onion2 teaspoons of curry powder1 teaspoon of ground cumin1 teaspoon of ground coriander1/2 teaspoon of cardamon seeds1 large crushed garlic clove1 and 1/4 litre stock of beef or chicken150 ml of CreamSalt and pepperChopped chives or parsley

2. Add the curry powder, spices and garlic and cook for about 2 minutes, stirring well.

3. Pour in the stock slowly, stirring until well mixed.

4. Cover and simmer gently for half an hour, or until the parsnips are quite soft. Taste for seasoning. Strain orliquidize, and if too thick, dilute with a little stock or water. Add the cream and reheat, but do not let boil.

Boasting a warm and friendly atmosphere, Lenehan’s pub is located a short distance from the centre of town but is a real hidden gem. Probably the most notable aspect of Lenehan’ pub is it’s iconic facade that’s straight from a John Hinde postcard. The interior retains an olde world charm that is seldom found in pubs these days and if you are looking to discuss some private hurling matters over a few good pints the snug can more than accommodate your needs! Lenehan’s was built in 1755 before the famine and evidence

of this date was found on an old chimney upstairs. Indeed papers dating back to 1880 were found in the loft . Originally a merchant trader house together with selling local brews, this pub has stayed original and should definitely be one to visit. Lenehan’s is located on the Castlecomer Road, just a two minute walk from McDonagh Junction Shopping Centre.
