Rushnik. Rushniks are traditional Ukrainian towels decorated with the ornamental pattern and used for ceremo-nial events. An example of their use would be a host offering his guests bread and salt, which would then be served on a rushnik.

A bottle of Horilka. Horilka is a traditional Ukrainian strong drink analogous to Russian vodka. One of the best selling kinds of horilka is Medova z Pertsem (honey with red hot pepper). The best brands are Nemiroff, Khortytsa, Mernaya, Medoff, and SV.

Bulava is a symbol of the Presiden-cy of Ukraine, and while being sworn into office President holds one.

ST. ANDREW’S CHURCH23 Andriyivskyi uzviz Kontraktova Ploscha, tel. 278 5861, Open 10:00-18:00. The St. Andrew’s church definitely is one of the best known Kyiv landmark and major tourist attraction. The church is notable among oth-ers for its baroque architecture, designed by famous architect Bartolomeo Rastrelli in 1747–1754. The church-museum is located atop the steep hill in the Upper Town (allegedly the place where the Apostle Saint Andrew arrived and erected a cross in the first century A.D., where he prophesied the foundation of a great Christian city in what was then a sparsely inhab-ited area) and overlooks the historical merchant Podil quarter.ST. MICHAEL’S GOLDEN-DOMED MONASTERY8 Triokhsviatytelska str, Maidan Nezalezhnosti. The functioning monas-tery is located in the Upper Town on the edge of a bluff northeast of the St. Sophia Cathedral and overlooks the city’s historical merchant Podil quarter. Originally built in the Middle Ages the exterior of the structures was rebuilt in the Ukrainian Baroque style in the 18th century while the interior remained in its original Byzantine style. The main cathedral of the monastery was completely demolished by the Soviet authorities in the 1930s, but was reconstructed after collapse of the Soviets.ST. NICOLAS CATHEDRAL77 Velyka Vasylkivska str, Respublikanskyi Stadion. The St. Nicholas Roman Catholic Cathedral is the second (after St. Alexander church) Ro-man Catholic cathedral built in Kyiv. It was constructed in the beginning of 20th century in a Gothic style featuring two 60 metre towers. Today the Cathedral is shared by the Kyiv Latin Rite Catholic community and the National House of Organ and Chamber Music of Ukraine and holds concerts regularly.KYIV PECHERSK LAVRA aka KYIV MONASTERY OF THE CAVES21 Ivana Mazepy str, Arsenalna, tel. 254 2257, Open 09:00-18:00. After foundation in 1015 and through subsequent centuries the cave monas-tery was widely regarded as the historical centre of the Eastern Orthodox Christianity in Eastern Europe. During the Soviet antireligious campaign of the 1920s the Lavra was converted into museum, still after collapse of the Soviet rule the jurisdiction over the site is divided between the state museum, and the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. The museum is also in-scribed as a World Heritage Site. The original Lavra cavern comprise a complex system of narrow underground corridors along with numerous living quarters and underground chapels.ST. SOPHIA CATHEDRAL 24 Volodymyrska str, Zoloti Vorota tel. 228 2083, Open 10:00-17:30, Wed 10:00-16:30, Thu closed. The Saint Sophia Cathedral is the first Ukrainian patrimony to be inscribed on the World Heritage List. The ca-thedral was built in 1037 and rebuilt in 1740 to its present look (a minor modification of cathedral cupolas). The original Saint Sophia Cathedral table model is exhibited in the central part of the cathedral. After the Rus-sian Revolution of 1917 and during the Soviet antireligious campaign of the 1920s, the government plan called for destruction of the 11th century cathedral and transformation of the grounds into a park “Heroes of Pere-kop” (after a Red Army victory in the Russian Civil War in Crimea). The cathedral was saved from destruction with the effort of many scientists and historians. Nevertheless, in 1934, Soviet authorities confiscated the struc-ture from the church, including the surrounding seventeenth–eighteenth century architectural complex and designated it as an architectural and historical museum. The bell tower of the museum complex is open to public with its 42 meters high 4th level view point to enjoy Kyiv bird’s eye panorama.ST. VOLODYMYR CATHEDRAL5a Tarasa Shevchenka Blvd. Universytet. Located centrally, St. Volo-dymyr’s Cathedral is the mother church of Ukrainian Orthodox Church. The church was built in 1882 to commemorate the 900th anniversary of the baptism of Kyivan Rus by prince Volodymyr the Great of Kyiv (St. Vladimir). The church feature traditional Byzantine architecture with six-piered, three-apsed crowned by seven cupolas temple with colourful inte-rior that particularly strikes the eye.

ANDRIYIVSKYI DESCENT (Andriyivskyi Uzviz Street)Andiyivskyi Descent is one of the best known historic streets and a major tourist attraction in Kyiv. The descent connects Upper Town and hisorical merchant Podil quarter. The street is lined with museums, souvenir sellers, galleries, restaurants. By way down there are St. Andrew’s Church, the Castle of Richard Lionheart, Mikhail Bulgakov’s museum, the One Street museum, and numerous other sights and monuments.THE GOLDEN GATE OF KYIV (Zoloti Vorota)40A Volodymyrska str, Zoloti Vorota. The Golden Gate was once a gate-way in the ancient city walls of Kyiv. The gateway was constructed by Yaroslav the Wise, Prince of Kyiv, in the 11th century. During subsequent centuries the gate remained the entrance to the city although it fell into ru-ins. In 1982, the Gate reconstructed to the 1500th anniversary of the city.INDEPENDENCE SQUARE & KHRESCHATYK STREETThe central Independence Square (aka Maidan Nezalezhnosti) is well known throughout the world as the place where supporters of Yuschenko and the Orange Revolution camped for weeks on end in October 2004. Throughout its history Independence Square was renamed six times. Khreschatyk, in its turn, is the main street of Kyiv. The entire street was completely destroyed during WWII by the retreating Red Army and rebuilt in the neoclassical style of post-war Stalinist architecture. Today, the street is the administrative and business centre of the capital, as well as a popu-lar place for Kyivans and guests of the capital. During weekends and pub-lic holidays, Khreschatyk is a car free zone and reserved for pedestrians. TRAMS, TROLLEYBUSES AND BUSESThese comprise extensive public transport system and operate from 06:00 to 01:00 depending on type of transport and the day. The fare is 1.5 hryvnia per ride for a particular type of transport irrespective of an actual distance of a ride. Tickets are available in street kiosks or in driver’s cabin.METRO (UNDERGROUND)Kyiv has one of the deepest metro in the world and its three line network with 46 stations covers nearly all the city. It is convenient, fast and reli-able. Metro frequency is 1 minute during rush hours, 3-5 minutes during daytime and up to 25 minutes at evenings (after 21:00). The fare is 2 hryvnias per ride; metro function from 06:00 to 24:00. Please note that there are NO English signs available in metro so check our Kyiv metro map to navigate your trip.TAXITaxi in Kyiv is quite inexpensive and convenient, however, English-speak-ing drivers are rare. Public transportbeneath the best recognisable monument in Kyiv the Motherland statute covers the area of 10 hectares (roughly 25 acres) overlooking the Dnipro River. It contains the giant bowl The Glory Flame (however, there is no flame today, probably due to a Russian-Ukraine gas dispute), a site with the WWII military equipment, and the armaments used by the Soviet army in modern times, and the Alley of the Hero Cities.
