Shanghai International Cruise Terminal by Sparchtext by Marcia Argyriades for Yatzer

Large scale projects have to be faced and designed in a particular way. The matter of scale isa large factor especially when what youre designing will have to sit at ease beside three80,000 ton cruise ships that will dock alongside. Scale factor is also critical in terms of howthe design is perceived from Shanghais famous Bund to the south. The design proposal bySPARCH was the one that met a strong visual presence which was equivalent to the 21stcentury continuation of the Bund.

    Render SPARCH, 2009

SPARCHs approach and concept was to create an exterior wrapping which would enclose thebuildings in a fluid steel and glass solar skin. As a result this approach would visually bind theaccommodation together and therefore create a continuous Winter Garden gallery spacewhich will contain green hanginggardens. The wave like glass facades unwrap along thebase of the construction to create a sheltered pedestrian route along the newly formed publicpark. SPARCH approached the design of this site in such a way to create breathing spacesan urgent requirement which was required by the Shanghai Authorities for the Shanghai WorldExpo 2010 which is themed Better City, Better Life. With the redesigning of the cruise

terminal a target was set // to free up 30 percent of the municipality as open space for itscitizens to enjoy. The Cruise Terminal Site forms part of this vision to create a greenwalkway along the Huangpu River, eventually extending as far south as the Expo site itself, between the Lu Pu and Nan Pu bridges.

SPARCH created high quality communal spaces which offer new experiences for the publicwhich will be using these spaces. Interactive activities such as a climbing frame which

creates a route through a series offloating Faberge Eggs to only experience the magnificentviews ofShanghai in the most unique way. SPARCH Project Director, John Curran says thatwe see the Shanghai Chandelier as our Expo pavilion that escaped to the Bund andextends an open invitation; all a welcome, admission is free. It surely seems to be amagnificent experience which you should visit if you are at the Expo 2010, especially at nightas the lights will create a flaring effect revealing a charming layer of Amethyst crystalbalconies which are enclosed within a 400 meter herringbone steel and glass skin, clearlyvisible from the Bund to the south.

All six buildings which constitute this architectural development offer a diverse mixture ofbusiness and leisure facilities for the end-users at the Shanghai International Cruise Terminal, aiming at establishing Shanghais status as an essential commerce and tourism center. Theinteriors of these six buildings more or less follow the concept of the exterior landscaping andarchitecture. They consist of elements which seem as sculpted holes which appear anddisappear, just like the exterior landscaping where by law 50 percent of the terminal isrequired to be above ground level and the other 50 below. Vibrant colors, voids and various

textures, materials, patterns and lines constitute part of the interiors. Egg-like sculptedforms create part of the voids in the buildings which have glass ceilings thus allowingabundant of natural light into the buildings; another element of sustainable design rather thanusing artificial lighting. The concoction of materials and colors creates the fun, loving diverseenvironment which SPARCH wanted to approach in their design in order to make thisarchitecture a reality according to the needs of their client.

Through this development and with the concept Better City, Better Life, the constructioncalled for a sustainable, environmental friendly design. The double second skin faade apart

from being an appealing design element also acts as a filter which traps UV heat from enteringthe buildings in the summer whilst during the winter months it performs the activities of aninsulating blanket. Further on, the buildings incorporate River Water Cooling Technology which utilizes water from the Huang Pu River as a refrigerant to cool and thereby greatlyreduce the buildings energy consumption during the summer months.

With the cruise site terminal being completed by Frank Repas Architects, this area of 260,000square meters where 50 percent of it is required to be placed underground; thus freeing up

most the site to create green parks. And with SPARCHs approach to design the above groundlevel they have developed an international cruise terminal which is more of an architecturalattraction, rather than just another terminal! It is surely something which will be the talk ofthe town in Better City, Better Life // Shanghai Expo 2010.

13 Innovative Green Building Designs, Lifecycle Building ChallengeWinners!

Written by Preston Koerner | October 29, 2008 | read more: Container Design,Current

    Affairs, Green Building,Green Tech,Modern architecture

Yesterday the EPA announced winners of the second annual green building competition

known as the Lifecycle Building Challenge, or LBC2. The challege issued a proposal fordesigns and ideas that support cost-effective disassembly and that anticipate future use of

building materials. It was open to architects, reuse experts, engineers, designers,

planners, contractors, builders, educators, environmental advocates, and students in threemain categories: (1) Building, (2) Innovation, and (3) Outstanding Achievement Awards.

The winners have been selected and listed below with a quick image. There's seriouslysome excellent thinking at work here, so congratulations to everyone ...

Tripod: A Plug and Play Housing System Submitted by the Carnegie Mellon University Solar Decathlon team, this project wonboth in the Building Category (Student) as well as the Outstanding Achievement

Award: Best Greenhouse Gas Reduction Design. TriPod is a prototype house

demonstrating the "Plug and Play" concept and is designed to provide an innovativealternative to the current housing industry.

Contain Your EnthusiasmSubmitted by Group 41 Architects, this design is the winner of the Satellite

Competition: Best of the Bay Area. Upcycling used containers is a highly green and

responsible alternative. Three containers make a gracious 3-bedroom home of 1,300

square feet with 9 foot ceilings. Their industrial quality is softened with simple woodtrellis elements that provide shading.

Sustainable PrototypeSubmitted by Studio 804, this project was named Honable Mention in the BuildingCategory (Student). The Sustainable Prototype serves as an Arts Center in Greensburg,

KS. The construction and delivery of The Sustainable Prototype was provided on the one

year anniversary of the tornado that devastated Greensburg.

Second-Life Iraqi Housing: Temporary to PermanentSubmitted by Eric Hansen of the University of Utah, this design was named Honorable

Mention in the Building Category (Student). Honorable Mention for a realisticsolution to a real-life problem. The design consists of flat-packed, folding panels which

are brought to the site by Marines, along with the supplies they already bring. The

structure can be quickly erected by the workforce of 36 marines during the night.

The Altis Belm Hotel & Spa is located in Belm, Lisbon adjacent to the Bom Sucesso Dockand the Belem Cultural Centre. This five star hotel celebrates not only its facilities and interiorspaces but also the adjacent open spaces and its connection to the water. Designed by RISCOArchitects, the building is the result of two intersecting perpendicular volumes. The naturalmaterial selection allows it to blend with its surrounding and not obstruct from the water or itsadjacent buildings. The building allows the natural light to permeate and penetrate thevolumes making it feel open, ample and comfortable. The long, clean lines allows opportunitiesto integrate vistas to the water and bring the exterior inside.

The hotel has a very unique element that allows it to screen the sunlight from the 50 rooms. The exterior facade acts as a screen permitting views but deflecting direct heat from the rays. When appropriate, those screens retract and allow a sun pool to enter the extensive decksmaking the rooms ample and providing them its own uninterrupted view of the water andLisboa landscape. Expect the hotel to be booked and busy during the next upcoming monthsand if you are one of the few to enjoy those great balconies in the rooms, be sure to comeback and let us know how you enjoyed your time there.

RISCO is organized into teams with a variable geometry, because they believe in diversity asa source of knowledge and in having multiple forms of know-how take part in each project. They dont always do the same thing in the same way. Critical reflection about what they do iswhat makes them move forward. Perhaps that coastline does impact behavioral and businesspractices after all!
