Changing the worldThe holidays are a special time for our family. We have many traditions just like so many other families around the globe.Christiana makes Vanillekipferl, which is my favorite Christmas cookie. Our family also gets together

to exchange gifts and celebrate the coming of the Christkindl. While much fuss is made about the greatest gadgets and gifts this time of year, the first Object of

Kiwanis reminds us about the importance of giving primacy to the human and spiritual rather than to the material values of life. It has been a tenet of our organization since 1924.

Kiwanians serve year round, but now is an excellent time to extend your Kiwanis impact by organizing an extra service project for your club. Invite a friend or family member to join you. You’ll spend quality time with someone close to you while making a difference in your community.

Here’s a quote I love -- “many small people, in many small places, do many small things, that can alter the face of the world.” That is what Kiwanis is doing. Club by club, charity by charity, we are changing the world.

From our family to yours, happy holidays.

The Biggest Club in Europe, Helgafell

Westman Islands is one of the best kept secrets in Iceland and some would say that you have not seen Iceland until you have visited Westman Islands. Westman Islands is one of the wonders of nature, surrounded by mountains, islands, volcanoes and seabirds. Westman Islands has a population of about 4 2 0 0 . T h e i s l a n d c a m e t o international attention in 1973 with the eruption of Eldfell volcano, which destroyed many buildings, and forced about six months evacuation of the entire population to mainland Iceland. In Westman Islands is the biggest Kiwanis club in Europe, Helgafell. One of the club members Tomas Sveinsson told me about the club. How old is the club and how many members are in the club ? The club is 46 years old. It was founded in September 1967 with 30 charter members. There are 102 members in the club. The average age in the club is 55 years and there is no generation gap. For example, we have a son, father and grandfather in the club.Do you know why the club is so

popular ? We have our own clubhouse with good facilities for meetings, billiards, wide screen, bar, etc. Our meetings are always good, with lots of fun and not so formal. We try to have interesting guest speakers at the meetings. We use technology a lot, like a computer screen projector with lots of photos, videos and other information. What do the members do to have fun ? We have lots of fun, like twice each year when we have meetings we call suspense meetings. Once a year we have a gourmet meeting, for which the master chefs in our club cook and the fishermen in the club provide the fish. The gourmet meetings are very popular and have many guests. When we have the club installation we take our spouses with us and we eat good food and dance. And in January every year we have „þorrablót“ , which is a very old Icelandic national tradition, during which it is customary to eat shark, lamb scrotum, dry fish, and drink a very strong spirit, Brennivín. Every summer in June, the club members go camping with our families. In addition, our spouses’ club, Sinawik, holds a Spring festival and invites us to come and have fun.

Is the front door open and the backdoor closed? Yes, most of the members have been in the club for long time, but of course members leave sometimes, and usually it is because they move to the mainland. We always have new members to take their place and it has always been easy for us to get them; they just come to us. They hear about us and want to join the club when we ask them.

Can you tell me about the club’s projects? The club’s main project is a candy sale each Christmas. We come together with our children, grandchildren and friends and they help us pack the candy in boxes. Then the club members go from house to house in the town and the townspeople welcome us and buy the candies. Another big project is that we make calendars and give them to each boat in the town, and we get money from the advertisements in the calendar.Every Christmas, the club members go to the retirement home, Hraunbúðir, where we decorate the house, give the residents candy and sing a Christmas song for them .We also take care of our

mountain, Helgafell, and pick up the trash in the area. The club is name for this beautiful mountain, Helgafell.

Training in Estonia

On 16th of November took place the first Kiwanis Basic Training for Baltic States and Finland. Training day went well and it had a lot of interested participants. There were 39 Kiwanians from 7 different clubs – attendees from Estonia, Finland, Latvia and Sweden, including new potential members -> new club in Tartu, Estonia. The participants were very disciplined, accepted the rules and co-operated all the time. They were highly mot ivated Kiwanians, but had l i t t le knowledge about the essentials.

The aim of the training was to give thorough overview about basics and remind values and educate them. I t was an ideal opportunity for getting knowledge about basics - history, structures, leading and opportunities. The trainers, Jan Radon (KI-EF) and Joe Nopp (the representative of Germany), were absolutely professionals and d a y w a s w e l l - s t r u c t u r e d – s k i l f u l presentations, videos, pictures and examples connected with organized clear and funny team-work between them. Both trainers did their best to keep the meeting interactive by using several training-techniques and being flexible with agenda. As Estonia have strongly growing junior club it was useful for young participants to get knowledge about different club options for future and also a great overview about youth camps and exchange. It was also an excellent training

about what Kiwanis is, what are the main projects and how to get new members and open a new club(s). Information they received was absolutely prepared and there were not even a second unplanned. Each attendee received a feedback form and none of the feedbacks were negative. Participants got everything they expected and now they have a deeper knowledge about Kiwanis and are more confident about their doings. They got strong theoretical background about basics and their motivation grew and through trainers examples got new ideas. Now they know better how to promote charity projects and to get new members and open new club(s).

Through training day every slide and video confirmed that they are in the right way and ready to use their new knowledge. These kind of high-quality trainings are also good for reminding Kiwanis basic-values which keep the organization alive. Training gathered together different clubs and countries which is a platform for co-operation, projects and friendship. The training assured that the clubs follow the guidelines correctly through Europe – fun, fundraising and friendship!

Report from the Polish Convention in Zielona Gora, Poland

As both my wife Kari and myself have plenty of free time these days, we decided to make a little holiday out of our trip to Poland. We flew into Berlin and connected with trains that took us to the beautiful town of Zielona Gora. This university town has approx. 120 000 inhabitants and it is situated in the northernmost wine-producing region in Europe, called Lubuskie.

The Convention started on Friday and the opening ceremony was held in the Regional Museum. We were all impressed by the beautiful glass mosaic wall in the hall. The Mayor of Zielona Gora welcomed us to the town before we were all charmed by a choir of small girls and boys. Poland’s representative to KIEF Board, Mrs. Bogumila Burda was very busy, hard working and always smiling. From what I understood of her speech she was very pleased to see all of the 80 participants there. In addition to Kari and myself the foreign guests counted KIEF Secretary Ralf-Otto Gogolinski and Imm. Past Governor Martin Poesen from the Netherlands. He was representing the sponsor district as well as the Eliminate campaign. It was also nice to meet our former KIEF Secretary Marc Jacobs. In the basement there were two exhibitions, one for torture instruments and one for the production of wines. Fortunately the friendship party was held in the latter and we had truly an enjoyable evening.

As a representative of KIEF Board I was invited to participate on both Board Meetings that was planned, one for the “old” Board prior to the General Assembly on Saturday morning and the other for the “new” Board on Sunday. I found it most productive to take part in the Sunday meeting as I could then meet the incoming crew for 2013-14.

Both meetings on Saturday took place in a huge greenhouse called the Palm Garden. The name is very accurate as it is full of palms of different sizes. The General Assembly was opened by Bogumila and the negotiations were firmly led by Mr. Jerzy Mosek from Kiwanis Club Gdansk.

The agenda was very similar to those of all the districts in Europe, and the elections were also generally approved by applause.

The general assembly was “crowned” by a delicious luncheon and as the weather gods saw to us in favor, we were all looking forward to the grand finale:

After a full days work, it was with great excitement we gathered by the hotel to travel by bus to a vineyard who also specializes in arranging celebrations of many kinds. When we arrived to the mansion it was really classy. The gardens and the buildings were highlighted and the inside was nicely decorated. After a delicious dinner buffet they had a lottery and an auction of different art works. All

income was earmarked for the Eliminate campaign. As a grand finale: The dancing lasted way into the small hours.

On the Sunday I participated in the Board meeting with the incoming Board under the leadership of Edyta Podsiadly. The business was conducted smoothly and during the meeting I raised the question of District 10. I had been asked by President Ernst to do so, and I started a lively discussion. They were quite unanimous when they again turned the idea down. The impression I got was that the motives for turning the idea down are the same as we have been informed of earlier. A crystal- clear message from the Polish 2013-14 : Forget it !

I will leave it to the KIEF Board to deal with that message.

What I do know for sure is that we will never forget some fantastic days in Zielona Gora. Thank you for making it a highly treasured memory for us.

The Eliminate Project UpdateLet’s make a run to score our goal – Strategies for the final 19 months

By Filip Delanote, Vice-Chairman Europe, The Eliminate Project

Dear Kiwanians, At the end of November, our campaign team in Europe including all the district coordinators gathered in Prague to evaluate our successes and discuss the strategies for the final 19 months of The Eliminate Project fundraising campaign, and I wanted to share some of the highlights from this meeting with you. We are now at a very critical point in our campaign; we do not have five years left anymore, like we did in Las Vegas in June 2010. We have 19–or almost 18–months left! At our strategy meeting, we discussed this sense of urgency to achieve our goal, to give the centennial gift from Kiwanis International of raising US$110 million and saving or protecting more than 61 million lives by 2015. Please do not wait on s e n d i n g i n y o u r f u n d s a n d c l u b commitments–submit them now and make a lifesaving gift this holiday season. Your funds will be making a difference! I wanted to share with you examples of our game-changing strategies, which will help elevate our current fundraising efforts, and also how you can support us and be part of changing the course of history: Using benchmarks Do you know that our current benchmark is to achieve 50% of our fundraising goal by December 31? Have you achieved the fundraising goal in your club? Make certain you ce lebrate the success and/or encourage your members to strive for the goal! You can also see your district’s goal and achieved fundraising efforts here: www.TheEliminateProject.org/totals Tools for Model ClubsModel Clubs help fulfill the urgent funding n e e d a n d a l l o w U N I C E F t o p l a n immunization activities. Leverage excitement for this historic day in Kiwanis history – everyone can be part of the celebration. What will your club’s centennial gift for The Eliminate Project be? Plan ahead! More ideas will be coming to your club shortly. Kiwanis friends, we need your hearts and your passion. We have the potential to meet our goals, but we cannot do it without you. The good news is this: we have the potential to realize our goal! We have passionate, committed Kiwanians like you. It’s going to take all of us to focus and accelerate our activity levels, but we can and we will make this happen. Soon, tetanus will be eliminated from the entire world. And it will be because of Kiwanis International and leaders like you. Thank you for being a part of it – and thank you to our great team in Europe for working hard to save lives – every day!
