Why Choose A Christian School?A good, quality education is something all parentswant for their children. But should you enroll yourson or daughter in public school or a private,Christian school?

Mark McKnight, Superintendent of San JacintoChristian Academy, offers compelling reasons whyparents should consider a Christian Education fortheir child.

1. Excellent academics- “Tomorrow’s physicians, engineers, teachers and business people are sittingin our classrooms today,” McKnight says. “Throughstrong basic skills instruction, many Christian schoolsgive students more one-on-one time to prepare ourchildren for a bright and promising future.”

2. Spiritual instruction transforms character- The goalof education should be to change the world. “Jesustaught a small number of disciples (students) andthey transformed the world,” McKnight says. “Biblestudy, worship and community service projects allhave a positive and powerful effect on young lives.”

3. Values that last a lifetime- The generation thatwill lead the world tomorrow will have uniquechallenges no other generation has ever faced. “Theyoung students of today will need to be versed inideas, philosophy and ethics based on God’s word,”Knight says.

4. A caring faculty- “Christian schools foster anatmosphere that is warm, friendly, positive, energeticand caring,” McKnight says.

5. Open lines of communication- “The importanceof parent involvement can’t be overstated. InChristian education, there is a solid bridge that existsbetween the schools and home,” McKnight says.

Dream come true, right?

Fancy Nancy: Poet Extraordinaire!by Jane O'connorFancy Nancy Clancy is so poetic, even her name rhymes. And with limericks, couplets, free verse, and more, poetry is plenty fancy! So when her teacher Ms. Glass gives Nancy and her classmates an assignment to come up with their very own poems, Nancy is determined to write one that is superb. But what happens when she can't think of a good idea?

Questions About Bracesby Goodwin Orthodontists

Q: So many children have braces. How can I tell ifmy child is heading toward needing braces?

A: If you observe something abnormal about yourchild’s teeth, you should seek advice from your child’sdentist or pediatrician about whether to see anorthodontist.

Here are some things to look for, indicating that achild is likely to benefit from seeing an orthodontist:

* Early, late, or irregular loss of baby teeth* Difficulty in chewing or biting* Mouth breathing* Thumb or finger sucking* Crowding, misplaced, or blocked-out teeth* Jaws that shift or make sounds* Biting the cheek or roof of the mouth* Teeth that meet abnormally or not at all* Jaws and teeth that are out of proportion to the restof the face

You can find general information on the AmericanAssociation of Orthodontists (AAO) Web site, http://www.braces.org.Ideal age for braces

Q: What is the best age to be fitted with braces?

A: The best age varies from patient to patient.Orthodontic treatment most commonly begins betweenages 9 and 14 because kids in this age range have atleast some permanent teeth and are still growing.

The majority of orthodontic problems, such ascrowding, too much space between teeth, protrudingupper teeth, extra or missing teeth, and jaw growth

problems are inherited, Dr. Joondeph says. Some otherproblems develop over time when children suck theirthumbs or fingers, breathe through their mouths, orhave poor dental hygiene, poor nutrition, or otherproblems.

When treatment is neglected, dental problems mayworsen over time and children, especially in their teenyears, may suffer emotional problems associated withfeeling far less confident.Adult treatment

Q: I know some adults who have braces, but doesorthodontic treatment really work well for adults, too?

A: Today, one in five orthodontic patients is an adult. In fact, the AAO estimates that more than 1 millionadults in the United States and Canada are beingtreated by its members. If your teeth are healthy, anorthodontist can move them at any age.

Orthodontics in adults is typically done for one of tworeasons :aesthetics or to improve dental or generalhealth. An example of the latter would be a patientwho can not chew food properly because of aninadequate bite or a patient whose tooth position putsher/him at risk of periodontal disease.

It is important, however, that any existing problems, such as periodontal disease or worn, damaged, ormissing teeth, be addressed first. It is important thatyour orthodontist work with your regular dentist toassure that you are a good candidate for braces andto increase the likelihood of an excellent outcome.

Once you are fitted with braces, you will be able tocontinue to live a completely normal life: You will beable to sing, play a musical instrument, dine out, kiss, and have your picture taken. Some modern braces arenearly invisible.
