MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR In 2018, we continued our work to positively impact the lives of local kids and their families through the power of sport. We worked hard throughout 2018 to continue our growing story of investment into the lives of local kids who need us most. That work is backed by 23 years of strong partnerships across multiple sectors within the community allowing us to provide a critical service to those that need it most. Over the past 23 years we have enriched the lives of over 47,000 kids with sport opportunities for total distributions of over $12 million made directly into our local sports community.

We are proud to be one of the largest single investors in minor sport in the communities we service. This investment comes from the hard work and commitment of our volunteers, partners, donors, sponsors, ambassadors, board members and staff. In 2018, KidSport Calgary & Area distributed over $1.62 million for sport registration fee assistance, which gave 5,647 local kids the opportunity to chase their dreams through sport. These locally raised dollars created life changing opportunities for the KidSport kids and their families.

KidSport funding not only gives a supported child the chance to play, it also provides peers to a new teammate, sport clubs enough kids to fill a team or program, resources for a sport club to operate, local jobs in sport related fields and support for infrastructure needed for an entire community to flourish. Each dollar we distribute is an opportunity for not only a child in need but also for their teammates, coaches and parents who are not considered “in need”. A dollar donated to our KidSport chapter is invested to make Calgary, Black Diamond, Airdrie, Cochrane, Chestermere, High River, Strathmore, Turney Valley and Rocky View County stronger.

Although 2018 brought a record number of kids supported and funds distributed, we were faced with declining fundraising revenue. This decline in revenue makes 2019 a critical year as we look to make up the funding shortfall from a tough 2018, while continuing to feed the increase in demand we know we will face again this year.

This year is also important for us as we prepare for our 25th Anniversary in 2020, a year we are so looking forward to sharing with all our supporters and partners! With your help and partnership, we know KidSport will continue building on our great history, continue our life changing investment in local kids, and continue our outstanding impact on our economy and sport community for another 25 years! Together we can make it So ALL Kids Can Play!

- Wilson Acton, KidSport Calgary & Area Board Chair

OUR MISSION

WE BELIEVE THAT NO KID SHOULD BE LEFT ON THE SIDELINES AND ALL SHOULD BE GIVEN THE OPPORTUNITY TO EXPERIENCE THE POSITIVE BENEFITS OF ORGANIZED SPORT. KIDSPORT PROVIDES SUPPORT TO CHILDREN IN ORDER TO REMOVE FINANCIAL BARRIERS THAT PREVENT THEM FROM PLAYING ORGANIZED SPORT.

REID SCHMIDT 1962-2018KidSport Calgary lost a dear friend and long time KidSport volunteer and supporter, Reid Schmidt this past December. Reid was the first chair of KidSport Calgary in 1995 and saw the potential for the program way before others even knew what it was. He was instrumental in developing the initial KidSport Calgary Board and they benefitted from his leadership and legal expertise for many years. Reid supported the development of many partnerships and events such as the Sport Swap Equipment Exchange, Ed Whalen Equipment Drive, NHLPA 3 on 3 Pond Hockey, and the Calgary Soccer Association’s Reciprocal Fee Contribution, to name a few.

The first KidSport Calgary cheques issued to pay for sport registration fees for Calgary kids were written at his kitchen table. He donated all of his Notary Public commissions to KidSport Calgary. He would come to meetings with pockets full of money and cheques with little stickies with his clients’ addresses for their tax receipts. Reid’s children were ambassadors for KidSport and joined Reid at the KidSport booth at many Calgary events. His parents are still volunteers for KidSport’s annual casino fundraiser.

Reid was the KidSport Calgary representative on the KidSport Alberta Provincial Board and supported many other chapters with the legal requirements to become independent societies. Reid was generous to a fault with his time and advice. He always had the best interest of the KidSport Kids and their families at heart for every decision he was part of in his 23 years of service. Reid was widely respected for his leadership and passion for KidSport and he will be missed by all of those in the KidSport family who knew him.

“KIDSPORT HAS HELPED ME GIVE SOMETHING SO INVALUABLE TO MY SON. Joey has found lifelong friends, a sense of discipline, learned what it means to work hard for a dream, which in his case was to make it to AA, and most importantly with the help of KidSport for that hour or two 4 days a week Hayden can just be a regular kid and forget everything else.”

CITY OF CALGARY NEW YEARS EVE

SPORT CALGARY // ALL SPORT ONE DAY

GOALS FOR KIDS In October of 2018 we launched a new platform to support the efforts of a couple of our great partners.

The Goals for Kids website was created with the goal of giving our community the opportunity to support the already amazing programs built by Canadian Pacific, one of our ambassadors Johnny Gaudreau and the Calgary Flames Foundation. The platform was made possible thanks to the commitment of one of our multi-year partners at ICONIC Electric & Controls and the skills and design power of our new partners at Flipp Marketing & Advertising. The sky is the limit for this initiative as we give the community a chance to support local kids, while being a fan of our hometown heroes. Check it out at www.goalsforkids.ca and stay tuned as we continue to evolve this platform to recognize the amazing partners and community who make it possible!

KIDSPORT CALGARY RECYCLING PROGRAM One bottle, can, milk jug or juice box at a time this program continues to grow and have a positive impact on KidSport Calgary and the number of local kids we are able to assist annually. Thanks to the tireless efforts of Gord and Laurie Clayton this passion project of theirs has grown into a key piece of our long-term sustainability as a locally funded charity. With exceptional sport facility and business partners like WinSport, Westside Rec Centre, the Calgary Soccer Centre and Sunridge Mall leading the way the program is ready to once again grow in 2019. Adding more sport partners, households and businesses along with our outstanding golf courses, schools and bottle drive partners we know the KidSport Recycling Program will be a big part of helping us make it So ALL Kids Can Play.

Get your business, household, golf course, condo building, facility or team involved and together we can turn your empties into sport opportunities that local kids need and deserve!

COMRIE’S SPORTS EQUIPMENT BANK Cost of sport remains the number one barrier keeping kids on the sidelines. Cost of equipment is a close second. With our partners at Comrie’s Sports Equipment Bank we are breaking down these barriers to ensure all KidSport kids who need our help have access to registration fees and the no cost equipment they need to get in the game. 2018 saw Comrie’s support over 2,604 kids with equipment as well as providing group programs with equipment to open the door to sport opportunities for hundreds more.

Local demand for KidSport Calgary continues to grow, and in 2018 we invested a record $1.62 million into our local sports community to ensure KidSport kids have a place to play. These dollars are not only a direct investment in the child who receives the support, it is also an investment in the 480 local sport clubs/organizations who received this funding from us in 2018. These dollars help employ staff, train coaches and volunteers, provide infrastructure and in some cases keep the lights on for the sport clubs we assist.

This is a great story and a huge success for our organization that relies 100% on community funding to make this happen. However, it is not sustainable without new partners, new donors, further support from our sport partners and an overall growth in our fundraising base and events.

2018 saw us support 5,647 kids, an increase of 13% from the previous year, and when combined with ever increasing sport registration fees, KidSport saw funding demand growth of 21% year over year. This increase in demand stands in stark contrast to a decrease in fundraising that led to an operational deficit in 2018. We were able to raise over $1.7 million, and we continued to keep our G&A costs lean, however we did not reach the dollars needed to keep up in 2018.

Strong governance and oversight put us in a position to get through a difficult year in 2018. This has also allowed us to keep our maximum funding per child at $375 per year to start 2019. As the needs in our community continue to expand, we know the demand for KidSport will do the same. We are committed to doing everything we can as an organization to meet this demand and reach the targets we have in place for 2019, which includes raising $2.3 million dollars and assisting over 6,100 local kids with the Gift of Sport!*2018 financial information above is unaudited. KidSport Calgary & Area Financials are audited annually by KPMG. The 2018 audited Financial Statements will be available on our website following the audit completion and our AGM in April 2019.
