Beach = relaxation and fun.

Building a sandcastle, playing a game of badminton, petanque... There are so many fun activities to choose from. Here are some games you can play with your children.

Sock twirling

Find an old sock or stocking without a hole in. Fill it with a few handfuls of loose sand (we recommenddune sand). Don’t fill the whole sock, just the foot. Don’t tie a knot in the sock! Take the sock by the empty end and twirl it around (as if you were hammer-throwing, but vertically) and let it go at the right moment! The faster you twirl it and the better your timing when letting go the higher the sock will fly. But the real fun starts when the sock descends: as the sock twirls down gradually all the sand in it will fall out, like a dust bomb.

Marble track

Carve a smooth spiralling track around a mound of wet sand. Let the marbles roll down.

This brochure is chock-full of ideas, from front to back cover, for an exciting day out or for organising a holiday somewhere between the beach and the hinterland of Knokke-Heist. Active suggestions, interesting facts about the sea and arts and crafts ideas: this brochure has it all and much more. We help you make a selection among the many children’s activities on offer in our resort and in the surrounding region. With this brochure you have all the tools in hand to give your bathing beauties and boisterous boys a dream holiday in Knokke-Heist and the Zwin region.

See you soon... in Knokke-Heist!

With a whopping ten kilometres of uninterrupted sandy beaches, Knokke-Heist is the perfect holiday destination for children of all ages. Naturally the wide sandy beach and the safe swimming areas are the first selling points for the young crowd. Swimming, horsing around, building sandcastles, windsurfing, flying a kite and many other beach sports... As you can see, the dike and the seaside resort offer lots of interesting leisure opportunities, but in effect the whole Zwin region, in a 20-kilometer radius around Knokke-Heist, truly is a paradise for children. And let’s face it, a holiday is only a success if your inner child also has fun, is it not?

A beach excursion requires some organisation. For starters, enthusiasm is the crucial ingredient in every beach bag. if you are going to the beach with your teeny toddlers, bathing beauties or young pirates, then the head beach lifeguard has the following tips for your children:

1. never go swimming alone. even experienced swimmers sometimes get into difficulties.

2. if you are not a good swimmer, then always keep both your feet on the ground – literally – and only venture into chest-high water or waves.

3. stay away from the breakwaters, piers and other structures.

4. Don’t take risks. Don’t climb on breakwaters. they are very slippery because of the moss and seaweed.

5. When on the beach or in the water with children, never lose sight of them

6. Do you feel hot after lying in the sun for a long time? then cool off first before taking a plunge.

7. Always make sure you have a number to call in case of problems with you, for example on a colourful wristband.

8. Don’t dig any deep holes on the beach or in the dunes.

9. Protect yourself against the sun. Regularly apply a new layer of suntan lotion with a high sPF.

10. Did you check where the nearest orientation post is located?

Ten tips for beach trips

Page 5: Kids@Knokke-Heist EN

Orientation posts are large posts on the beach with a cartoon figure on top. It can be a fish, a banana, a locomotive, a house, a boat or a ball. Children can easily recognise these orientation posts and they are very convenient orientation points. The posts have been set up in the controlled swimming areas. Choose an orientation post and pick up a matching wristband from the tourist information office, the lifeguard station or the first aid station. Write your child’s name and your phone number on the wristband.

If your child was unable to resist the lure of the ice-cream van and is missing, then contact one of the following:

A refreshing dip

naturally you want to know about the quality of the seawater for your kids. Don’t worry about this in Knokke-Heist. For several years the water quality on our beaches has been excellent. You can find more information about the water quality of your swimming area on the following website: www.kwaliteitzwemwater.be. Ready foR a cool plunge? You’re quite right. But remember, safety is everything. the lifeguards ask that you only swim in the controlled bathing areas. And there are plenty of those in Knokke-Heist. the ‘controlled swimming areas’ are indicated by blue signs with a white background. these signs mention when the lifeguards are on patrol: from 10.30 a.m. until 6.30 p.m. You can find the lifeguards on the beach in Knokke-Heist from 15 June until 15 september. there are 15 controlled swimming areas in Knokke-Heist:

• Heist 1+2 (from Kardinaal Mercierstraat to Anemonenlaan)

• Duinbergen 1 +2 (from Anemonenlaan to M.Quaillestraat)

• Albert Beach 1-3 (from Duinresidence to Rubensplein)

• Knokke-Centre (near Lichttorenplein)

• Knokke 1+2 (from Marie-Joséstraat to Duindistelstraat)

• Zoute Beach 1-4 (from Albertplein to Appelzakstraat)

by helping them immerse themselves under water or by providing support against the waves. Knokke-Heist still has several bathing tent owners. Life is all about pleasure here. You can enjoy a drink and a bite to eat. Lounge in one of the cosy beach chairs and feel as if you are on a beach in ibiza as your children lark around on one of the many play gyms. Most bathing tent sites are fenced off, making it more difficult for your child to go missing in the crowd.

on sunny days the bathing tent owners are always at your service from early morning until (after) dark.

fact

the first bathing regulations were issued in the early nineteenth century. nudity was strictly prohibited. initially the bathers would sit in a tub while fishermen’s wives would pour seawater over their heads. subsequently the guests were taken to the edge of the water in a ‘bathing machine’ or car to take a plunge in the salt water. Bathing guides worked long hours as they were at the disposal of the bathers from morning until dusk. Bathers would rely on their guide, or ‘guide-baigneur’, who would help them with their bathing cure by pouring sea water over them,

How to build a sandcastle?

When building a sandcastle, start by making a mound of wet sand. then ‘hew’ the sandcastle out of the mound by removing sand. think of yourself as a sculptor who hews parts of the stone and finally completes his statue. in practice this means shovelling, mixing and patting down a lot of sand to build the block of sand you need. once you have a solid mound of sand, then the creative part of the job starts. Use trowels and smaller tools to carefully cut the shape you want out of the sand and soon you will start to see the sandcastle emanate from your basic mound of sand. Don’t forget to dig a trench that is sufficiently deep around your sandcastle, so the Giant Wave cannot penetrate it!

fact

these days children tend to play outside less frequently. And yet exercise is very healthy for children, especially at the seaside! so let your children try out some fun sports. Because sport is good for your body but also for your immunity and your social contacts. sport has a positive effect on the brain development and even on your child’s school performance.Below are a few suggestions, so you can find out which sport suits your child best.

youtH Holidays there are two youth holiday options to choose from. on the one hand the Vakantieplus camps offer children the possibility to make their holiday as fun, as sporty or as informative as they want and on the other hand Knokke-Heist also organises De speelpleinen playground sessions. this is the place to horse around, do arts and crafts and play fun games with kids of your age. You can fill your days with fun Vakantieplus camps or spend the whole day at De speelpleinen, but a combination of both is also perfectly feasible. And don’t forget, the counsellors of the camps and playgrounds are seasoned and professionally trained staff. All information can be found in the Youth Holidays in Knokke-Heist brochure. You can download this brochure at www.jeugdknokke-heist.be.More information on page 36.

fact

Can you gather eggs on the beach? With a bit of luck you may find a whitish ball on the sand near the water which resembles a rice cracker. it is not actually a cracker but an egg case of a whelk. After storms you may even find the egg cases of a ray. Look for a dark, dry capsule with four spindly tendrils. they are sometimes also known as devil’s purses.
