The Goddard Collaborative

Over the past two years, a group of colleges, universities, K-12 schools, museums, libraries, municipalities, and other non-profit organizations in Central Massachusetts and nearby regions have come together to collaborate on high-speed networking opportunities.


History• NEESCom builds a competitive fiber network

• WPI and NEESCom establish Goddard GigaPop LLC for Internet2 access (1999)

• Great plans for fiber development fade away– Fiber construction slows and competitive providers fail

– GigaPoP “commercial” business model does not work

– WPI purchases NEESCom’s share (2002)

– WPI restructures GigaPoP business model– Convenes group of colleges for NSF grant application => “customers”

– Deadline missed, but awareness generated!

– Group keeps meeting; grows; develops broader agendas

– WPI still the only Goddard GigaPoP “customer”
