This program is dedicated to the memory of Professor Kenneth Hale, the eminent linguist of MIT who died on October 8th 2001. He spoke about 50 languages fluently and regarded each language as an intellectual treasure-house of communication, culture and humanitarian values.

SPECIFIC INSTRUCTIONS FOR THIS SPECIAL VERSIONUSING – ICL - INTENSIVE CARE LANGUAGE

(the ICL additional computer program is available on request)

1. Follow these instructions EXACTLY to achieve EFFICIENT and EFFECTIVE learning. First, convince yourself that "Language is an Instinct" and you can do it in one week with: CPSA & C (Confidence, Practice, Speed, Accuracy and Concentration (focus))! This is based upon the Robert Schuler theme: "If I believe ... I can achieve!!!"

2. Use the workpack ONLY after completing ("dancing your way through") the pre-learning AND one morning of a partner/computer learning. Then a week later, complete the course with another morning of a partner/computer active learning.

3. Study every part of the workpack carefully during ONLY one week. Repeat ALOUD everything you read. Make up a short phrase for every key word you learn ("hooks to learning"!). Convince yourself that you WILL understand EVERYTHING. Teach yourself well!

4. Mark the workpack! MARK the things you understand with a TICK! Mark the things that CONFUSE you with big QUESTION MARKS. Give them time to "COOK" in your non-conscious mind! Resolve them later COMPLETELY!

5. Translate the SPEED TEST - PART A and try to achieve the targets.

6. Try many times to complete the SPEED TEST - PART B, in 15 minutes.

7. Buy a Berlitz phrase book and EACH day for the week, repeat a whole sections aloud choosing alternative words for variety (to increase your vocabulary). Buy "Turkish in a Week" (Hodder Headline) for follow up.

LIFT-OFF/ACCENT IMPROVEMENT LANGUAGE - A MORNING WITH DR. BOLAND

COMPUTER-BASED KHMER/ENGLISH/JAPANESE/MANDARINBROCHURE

1. THE PROGRAM

a. Each program is a four hour computer-based learning experience with a partner (a natural language speaker), designed for managers with severe time constraints. It uses new learning theories to achieve rapid conscious and non-conscious learning.

b. The LEARNING is achieved by "absorbing" the language and speaking continuously with the partner in a special learning environment.

c. The PARTNER continually encourages us to achieve excellent pronunciation, but does NOT teach nor critique the program. The PARTNER is a "learning aid" to inspire changes in our KSA - knowledge, skills and (above all) attitudes, towards "absorbing" the language.

d. The technical structures in the final version of each program are verified by recognized university-based language specialists.

2. SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES

The specific learning objectives of the morning are:

a. To begin to decode the music of the language with improved listening, speaking, understanding and confidence.

b. To practice using about 200 words/phrase in the language with an EXCELLENT accent.

c. To develop personal confidence in whispering, speaking, singing, imitating and even shouting in the language.

d. To motivate further study in the future.

3. WHY BOTHER?

You speak English. You do business with an foreign speaker, who speaks perfect English. He "seems" to understand everything you say in English ... so why bother with lift-off" or "accent improvement" in his/her language?

a. LIFT-OFF (getting into a new language rapidly) - you make the effort to learn some of a new language, so that he/she feels "more comfortable" with you as a person ...

b. ACCENT IMPROVEMENT (speaking the language) - you recognize that a "bad accent" can be EXHAUSTING for the listener ... and like "halitosis" ... he/she can NEVER tell you ...

... so why not take just a morning ... to improve the quality of your 5

4. A NEW WAY OF LEARNING

We must take a little time to prepare our minds to learn in a new way; thus we must:

a. Recognize - that most of what we do in life, we do without special awareness, almost non-consciously rather than consciously, while responding to our environment which communicates with us all the tim e.g. driving the car.

b. Recognize - that our non-conscious mind is very powerful, it has an almost unlimited capacity to learn. And it can learn much faster than our conscious mind, if we can make the emotional investment to allow the learning process to operate freely and not be blocked.

c. Convince - our non-conscious mind, that we really a must and can, understand, use and remember, everything in this short learning process; and for this we must get emotionally invested!

d. Develop - the confidence to relax and let our powerful non-conscious mind guide us through a very rewarding, and yet highly emotional, learning experience, just for the morning, with a partner, together.

1. CONCEPTS

The programs are based on new theories of conscious and non-conscious learning, and the basic assumption that:

"Language is an instinct ... language is a caring ... and reaching out ..."

The program has three phases:

a. Pre-learning - to absorb instinctively, the "music" of the language - informally, play and dance with the tape twice - about two hours of listening, shouting, talking, singing and imitating.

b. Learning - the computer program with a partner and/or the audio tape speaking only the target language with excellent pronunciation - four hours in a morning.

c. Learning maintenance - study to absorb everything ... then repeat the program with a partner as in b. above - four hours in a morning.

To print out the yext of the program.

3. LEARNING

To use the program, FOUR "learning aids" contribute to efficient and effective learning during the morning:

c. When running the program try to simply use the KEYS ... more convenient than the mouse:

1. Press RETURN to continue.

2. Where necessary always move the arrows to CONTINUE and press RETURN.

3. Move the arrows to BACKPAGE and then press RETURN to go back a page. Then move the arrows back to CONTINUE and press RETURN.

4. Move the arrows to HELP to get advice and then move the arrows back to CONTINUE and press RETURN.

5. Move the arrows to GLOSSARY to get any word in other language, press ESCAPE to stop and then move the arrows back to CONTINUE and press RETURN.

6. Follow the instructions on the screen for the quiz.

7. At the end of each section you will find a menu. Move the arrows to the next section and press RETURN to continue..

8. Move to QUIT and press RETURN to go on to the menu and another section or to end the program.

d. Thus, (repeating!) to start "Early Morning" work type "FLASH" and to start "Late Morning" work, type: FLASH2 and then press RETURN to continue in the same way as above.

e. To start the quiz exercise by itself, type: QUIZ and follow the instructions.

f. To start the glossary exercise by itself, type: GLOSSARY and follow the instructions.

g. To start the grammar exercise itself, type: GRAMMAR and follow the instructions.

NOTE: If at any time (due to false instructions) the program blocks, then simply switch off and start again.

6. ROLE OF THE PARTNER - ABSOLUTELY CRITICAL

a. The Partner is the key to working for four hours intensively; he/she creates a learning environment in a separate private room with computer, audio cassette and a relaxing atmosphere where the learner can "act out" the learning without any personal embarassment and where the high level of background noise (audio tape played loudly) creates no complaints; she provides the "caring"and the sound (hence no audio on the program - too boring after only one hour and impossible for four continuous hours of learning); she is a natural speaker of the "Target Language" with a high calibre accent and she has good English competence; she has a good voice (a bit theatrical for exageration) and an attractive outgoing personality; She creates a "Theater of learning" which is FUN!!

b. She DOES: briefly interpret screen instructions and summarize the learning philosophy (learning by doing and absorbing); she works the computer (at first); she plays the audio tape loudly/softly all the morning; she laughs a lot; she CONTINUALLY encourages and rewards the learner ("well done" ... "that's it" ... "yes that's good"); she shows how to PRONOUNCE every new word for the first time (with theatrical exaggeration!!!); she continually corrects pronunciation; she encourages "shouting" or "singing" of difficult words/phrases; she INSISTS on completing all of the work in the morning; she insists the learner speaks ONLY the target language (as much as possible!!); cuts the work to fit the time (must complete the program in the morning); she provides (at the end of the morning) the Learning Maintenance Pack for study during one week ("I want you to really understand everything in this pack"); she sets the appointment for the learning reinforcement the following week (another morning); she answers questions (during coffee break and after the program); she makes the learning a THEATER OF FUN ... JUST FOR THE MORNING ... and she makes sure that the learner has done the FULL pre-learning activity (three hours listening and IMITATING of the audio tape BEFORE she allows him to do the program) ...

c. She/he does NOT: translate every instruction; teach anything(there no time); translate; explain grammar: encourage questions; add new words; lecture; make long boring speeches; discourage; criticize the program; add to the program (no time); get involved in colloquial explanations (no time); allow the learner to fail to complete the program (cut and make it on time); discourage the learner; de-motivate!!!

NOTE:If NO partner is available the VERY highly motivated learner can use the audio tape as a substitute for the partner (not as effective but it can work well ONLY with very high motivation!!!). He/she can locate on the tape the "Accent/Structure Exercise" and play it along with the computer program. Similarly for each section he can play the basic vocabulary sounds from the tape. HOWEVER A PARTNER IS 1000% MORE EFFICIENT AND EFFECTIVE!!

ICL rams currently available include: English, French, German, Turkish, Indonesian, Mandarin, Japanese, Khmer, Finnish, Hungarian, Zulu, Xhosa, Arabic, Spanish, Czech, Russian, Urdu, Turkish etc. Several other language versions are in process and each program is being continually improved and updated.

For special clients a new program in a particular language or dialect, can usually be produced to order, in about two weekss of intensive supported effort, plus testing.
