To Whom It May Concern: I am writing with respect to the position of Executive Director, Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology (MCB) in Faculty of Arts and Sciences (FAS) at Harvard University. In my role as Administrative Director for the Center for Human Genetic Research (CHGR) at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH), I have been developing long-term financial management strategies for complex individual research programs, strengthening the overall strategic allocation of financial resources, and coordinating the daily financial services for the center with annual activities exceeding $45M. These financial responsibilities include oversight of all CHGR grant proposal submissions to private and public institutions, including academia, federal agencies, and philanthropic organizations. Overall, I am responsible for maintaining fiscal and administrative compliance with internal, federal, private and industrial rules and regulations, and I provide general administrative support for the center through personnel management, procurement, facilities and other duties as needed.

Before assuming my current position, the organization experienced complex financial issues involving revenue and expense control, with a cash deficit of $9M. Under my leadership the deficit was reduced to $2.7M within the first fiscal year, an improvement that resulted from my streamlining of business processes, educating Principal Investigators in financial decision-making, revising procurement procedures, and improving overall operations. In addition to this strong financial background, I also have proven project management skills. A prime example is the leadership that I have been providing with respect to the overall project plan for the new CHRG facility at MGH. Working closely with the senior administration, I have been overseeing the management of central CHGR administration and construction budgets, the co-ordination of sponsor funding between the MGH and CHGR, the co-ordination of end-users and external vendors to ensure appropriate equipment and furniture, and the design and build-out of the physical space to include specialized scientific equipment.  I believe that the combination of my experience in working for one of the largest and most productive academic hospital-based research institutions in the world along with specific experience working in an academic environment, as I was formerly an Administrative Officer and Senior Fiscal Officer at MIT, has provided me with the essential interpersonal and political skills needed to excel in a high-level work environment and to contribute to the advancement of any complex organization.

I am currently pursuing an Ed.D. from the College of Professional Studies program at Northeastern University in Higher Education Administration. With a Master’s in Education, a Bachelor’s in Business Management, a Graduate Certificate in Research Administration, and a Graduate Certificate in Healthcare Corporate Compliance, I am confident that the combination of formal education and extensive work experience qualify me for this position.
