Kopenhagen Fur’s label designs integrate the newly launched, international Origin Assured programme (OA) with the existing four Kopenhagen Fur quality labels.

The new Kopenhagen Fur labels are a two-fold consumer assurance. It is an assurance both that the fur is of superior quality and an assurance that the fur has been produced in countries where fur farming is regulated.

Garments carrying a Kopenhagen Fur quality label have been made from fur skins that are unrivalled in quality.

Only skins sold through Kopenhagen Fur and graded by Kopenhagen Fur’s graders can carry the Kopenhagen Fur quality label. Most skins sold through Kopenhagen Fur are mink skins, but Kopenhagen Fur’s quality labels extend equally to fox, chinchilla and swakara skins.

Can anything positive be said about the

present situation? Less than a year ago

all economists agreed that on the whole,

world economy was in good shape and

the only limitation to future growth and

prosperity was shortage of raw materials

and qualified labour. The number of well-

to-do people rose at a pace unprecedented

in history.

The scene changed abruptly half a

year ago, when the American economy

more or less collapsed and in fearfully

short time the American disease spread

to the rest of the world. For the first time

in history we experienced a real break-

down in the global financial market, a

break-down that affected all ramifications

of the world economy with overpowering

strength. The world has never experienced

similar falls in prices of shares, real

estate and raw materials. Due to the

miserable situation in the financial world,

financial institutions could not maintain

their present loan level to the detriment

of production and trade. Consequently,

companies are closing down and the world

trade is decreasing. Unemployment rises,

enormous fortunes have been lost, which

of course affects private consumption

and especially the consumption of luxury

goods. Therefore, it was not surprising

that the result of the first fur auction of the

season was poor.

However, to get back to the question

if we can say something positive about the

present situation. The answer is yes and in

this edition of Kopenhagen Fur News we

have chosen to bring three positive stories.

In November 2008 the Danish fur

trade celebrated its 10 years’ anniversary

for the design competition, The Golden

Fur Pin. The event was celebrated with a

magnificent fashion show where the ten

winners each presented three styles with

fur. The event was a huge success. The

Danish fashion press and the Danish fashion

world were enthusiastic over the young

designers and the practicability of fur.

In the same month Kopenhagen

Fur participated in a Danish sales drive

in Russia. The Danish embassy hosted

a small exclusive exhibition of Danish

luxury goods and fur was very visible

on shoes, jewellery, cushions, blankets,

carpets and traditional fur garments.

The Danish princess Marie visited the

exhibition and in honour of the event she

wore a smart fur flower in her hair. The

invited guests from the Russian fashion

world and fashion press were very

positive. The exhibition confirmed that

the market for fur as material is almost

unlimited. Furthermore, the exhibition

also confirmed that the interest in our

beautiful product is still great. When fur

sales are poor, it is not because fur is not

fashionable anymore. Fur sales are poor

for exactly the same reasons as poor

sales of cars, watches, jewellery, journeys

abroad and all other luxury goods. Some

people will now maintain that luxury

is unnecessary, but this is not correct.

Luxury goods are just as important as

all other consumer goods, as we have

a basic need for a little more than what

is absolutely necessary. Therefore, we

consumers find it very difficult to leave

the credit card in our pockets for very

long. No matter how bad world economy

is, we need a little luxury to overcome

everyday life that this is what the third

article is about. Let us hope that all the

rescue packages, bank packages, tax

relieves and the low interest rates make

the consumers take the credit card out

of the pocket a little faster than usual, so

we get our fine trade going in the not too

distant future.

KoPenhagen fur OFFERiNG 2008/2009

In the previous season Kopenhagen Fur

sold a total of 17.8 million mink skins.

Kopenhagen Fur expects to offer an

almost unchanged number of mink skins

in the season 2008/2009. However, the

composition of the mink types will be

different. The offering of Black, Mahogany,

Brown, Glow and Silverblue will be

increased whereas the number of White,

Pearl, Sapphire and Cross mink skins will be

reduced. The major change will be that Cross

mink will be reduced by almost 50 per cent.

To plan your purchase at Kopenhagen

Fur best possibly the estimated offering is

stated in types and number in the below

survey. Furthermore, the sizes to be

offered at the auctions concerned appear

from the below table.

A comprehensive offering in colour

shades in Platinum, Burgundy and Ivory as

the dominating qualities will be offered at

all five auctions.

The hair length CLASSIC (medium

nap) will still be dominating, but the

offering of Velvet (short nap) makes

an increasingly larger share of the

collection.

Kopenhagen Fur’s top quality

PURPLE which is selected among the finest

female skins of the Velvet quality will come

under the hammer at the February and the

June auctions where also the TOP LOT of

the season will be sold.

The growing wealth in Russia was the

main theme at the conference ‘Precious

Denmark’ on 19 November 2008 at the

Danish embassy in Moscow. Kopenhagen

Fur, representatives from the Danish trade

industry, HRH Prince Joachim and Princess

Marie participated in the event.

The main purpose of the conference

was to acquire a closer co-operation

between Russian and Danish companies.

At the event, Kopenhagen Fur exhibited

mink pillows and blankets, and the shoe

designer Cecilie Toklum participated

with her sculptural shoes made of mink

and swakara.

Besides Kopenhagen Fur’s exhibit,

the Danish shoe designer Cecilie Toklum -

who is the designer behind the brand

Toklum By Cecilie Toklum - exhibited her

beautiful and sculptural shoes with mink

and swakara, which were made in co-

operation with Kopenhagen Fur. Also the

Danish world famed carpet manufacturer

Ege Tæpper, was represented by the

director Svend Aage Færch Nielsen, had

created carpets with pictures of swakara

and mink, which almost looked like real fur.

Last, but not least, the designer

Josephine Bergsøe participated in the

event with jewellery with fur in co-

operation with Kopenhagen Fur. Therefore,

fur was the eye of all attention at the event:

- Fur was extremely visible at the

event. So visible that you should almost

think, it was our event, says Kopenhagen

Fur’s managing director Torben Nielsen.

He was very happy with Kopenhagen

Fur’s participation and not least to meet

Princess Marie:

- It was a great pleasure to meet the

Princess. I am sure, that we once again

have a Princess who will be an excellent

representative for Denmark , Torben

Nielsen says.

Red lamps, dark oak and a stage in the

middle. You almost think that this is the

description of an old theatre, but it is not.

It is the auction room at Kopenhagen Fur,

which is filled with people attending The

Golden Fur Pin 2008.

The fur is designed by former

participants in The Golden Fur Pin plus

the winner of this year’s competition, who

have designed three styles each for the

anniversary show. There is something for

every taste: The simple, the daring and

the more glamorous. Suddenly, everyone

is quiet:

‘The winner of The Golden Fur Pin

2008 is Anna Melander’, whereas models

stride down the catwalk with the beautiful

and original styles created by Anna.

- It is fantastic to win. It is so difficult

to know, what the judges expect, and I have

never worked with fur before, says Anna

Melander.

dress made of white Finnraccoon and white

- I got the idea of the three styles

while working with the material. The idea

is ‘fur meets other materials’, says Anna

Melander.

The 27 year old Anna Melander has

rapidly progressed. She just graduated from

The Design Academy in Kolding in June

and showed her graduate collection during

the Danish Fashion Week in August. Here

she was contacted by Ms Eva Helmbæk,

the coordinator of The Golden Fur Pin, on

from getting your name established in the

fashion industry, it is also an opportunity to

a future with design

If she is going to be established in the

fashion world it is unavoidable to go into

business. Right now she does not know

what the future will bring; just that she

wants to be a designer;

- I just graduated from the Design

Academy in Kolding. The next move is

to get myself a job at a fashion house. I

want to get some experience before I

start designing in my own name, Anna

Melander says.

She hopes that her participation in

The Golden Fur Pin will kick-start her career

as a designer.

- The Danish fashion world is a very

limited field, so you are lucky if you get

success. But it is no secret that several of

the former participants in The Golden Fur

Pin have become established names in the

fashion world. Therefore, I hope that my

participation may help kick-start my career,

says Anna Melander and smiles.

the Judges’ verdiCt

Prominent people from the Danish

fashion world were gathered to nominate

the winner of The Golden Fur Pin 2008.

They point out the competition to be

innovative for Danish fashion:

- The Golden Fur Pin is inspiring for

the industry, says Peter Ingwersen, creator

of the Noir label.

- The Golden Fur Pin has made

fur a modern material, which you as a

designer can develop, to the great delight

of a modern audience. During the years,

there have been many different styles at

the show, where fur has been interpreted

in exciting and untraditional ways. Fur is

indeed a material which creates inspiration

for future fashion, says Henning Kern, one

of the designers behind the jewellery brand

Dyrberg Kern.

Declining consumption and financial crisis

have for a long time been the agenda of

the media, and have made business people

all around the world shake in their shoes

because of the gloomy prospects.

It has been pointed out that the

luxury industry – including the fur industry

- will be hit the hardest. Futurologists

predict that these industries will be most

severely influenced by the crisis.

But even though the future looks

gloomy for the fur industry, there is

hope according to Poul Erik Jacobsen,

trend researcher in ‘PEJ gruppen’, who

researches in trends of the fashion

industry;

- Very provocatively said, women

cannot keep their credit cards in their

pockets for more than two years. By

that I mean that, for the most part, it is

the women who control the household

expenses, and it is human nature to back

out at some point. At some point you just

have to say; ‘let’s move on’, he says.

He and other trend researchers think

that in 2010 the consumption will be back

on track again.

- Earlier, it was very common that

crises lasted several years. Now the

picture has changed and nowadays crises

do not last more than a year or a year and

a half. Fortunately, to the pleasure of the

companies, the periods of growth are

normally very long, he says.

Just like the trend researcher Li

Edelkoort, Poul Erik Jakobsen thinks that

the election of the new president in the

US, Barack Obama, may have a positive

influence on the American consumers’

optimism and belief in the future. An

important influence which may affect the

economy in the rest of the world.

PeoPLe wiLL asK for Luxury fur

Poul Erik Jacobsen thinks that

the consumers will be so fed up with

the financial crisis in 2010 that they will

start consuming again. The trend of the

fashion world 2010 will therefore be pastel

beginning;

- We will see clear, light pastel

colours, and that symbolizes purity

and a new beginning. It is a very clear

tendency, which is common after a

recession, he says.

Poul Erik Jacobsen also predicts that

there will be a great need for telling the

world that you have come out of the crisis

in a good way;

- People want to show that they

have come out of the financial crisis in a

good way by showing off expensive and

exclusive design or materials— like fur for

example, to signalize that ‘I was not hit by

the crisis’, he says.

In other words, there is hope for the

fur industry when the crisis ends and the

consumers’ desire to shop return with

renewed strength.

More than 600 enthusiastic

customers participated, when

two fashion shows at Paris

Spring opened the season in

Chanchung, China.

The customers‘ enthusiasm

with the show was

demonstrated through the

sales, which significantly

surpassed the level from

last year’s season-opening

show, indicating that the

demanding Chinese luxury

consumer awaits the winter

with confidence and a quest for

quality in fur and design.

- The Chinese market is

currently the largest market for

fur and the Chinese fur luxury

consumer is becoming more

and more sophisticated in her

taste and quality expectations.

Even though the current

financial crisis – in the long

run – probably will affect the

the Chinese market too, it is

well known that people seek

security for their investments

in the highest quality of the

products, says managing

director of Kopenhagen Fur Mr.

Torben Nielsen.

waiting to see Kopenhagen

Fur’s fashion show.

The show ushers in the annual

fur festival in Happy Family, the

only Kopenhagen Fur Certified

Despite the global economic

inertia, consumers’ enthusiasm

in fur fashion seems

sustainable. The Kopenhagen

Fur show was staged three

times on the same day with the

first show attracting at least

2,000 spectators.

Kopenhagen Fur’s sales director

Mr. Erik Neergaard participated

in the show and he was amazed

by the Chinese consumers;

- Although the rest of the

world is suffering from the

economic crisis, I am happy to

see Shenyang fur market is still

working very well.

- The reason why I choose to

the styles are trendy, classic

exhibitionFROM 31 JANUARy 2009 MONET, RENOiR, vAN GOGH, GAUGUiN - iMPRESSiONiSTS AND POSTiMPRESSiONiSTS iN THE iSRAEl MUSEUM, JERUSAlEM

In the spring of 2009 ARKEN is presenting

53 selected works of French Impressionists

and Post-Impressionists from Israel Museum,

Jerusalem: Paintings and bronze sculptures from

the turn of the last century, with main works by

artists such as Monet, Pissarro, Renoir, Degas,

Rodin, Gauguin, Cézanne and Van Gogh. The

Impressionists celebrate the modern, painting

swiftly and sketch-like to capture the fleeting,

modern world around them, portraying the

countryside and cityscapes of their time, with

emphasis on light and movement. The following

generation, the Post-Impressionists, take one

step further in their experiments of colour

while sometimes expressing a yearning for the

original, primitive and unspoilt. It will be possible

to see the broad range of artistic expressions

and attitudes characterising the painting and

sculpture of the two generations at a seminal

period in history.

Organized by the Israel Museum, Jerusalem in col-

laboration with ARKEN Museum of Modern Art.

ambitious people behind the ballet at the Royal

Theatre.

The music at the ballet is made by the Russian

The exhibit also shows that Manga is not

only about colourful cartoons for children,

but actually have roots back in a 200 year

old Japanese art, and that Manga also today

influences culture and art in Japan.

At the exhibit you can experience how Manga

has developed from simple woodcuts and simple

with animé film, computer games and art.

Even art lovers are not intimately familiar with

French Impressionist Gustave Caillebotte (1848-

1894), despite his name being firmly connected

to those of Claude Monet, Pierre-Auguste

Renoir, and Edgar Degas. Caillebotte worked

closely with his artist friends and exhibited his

work alongside theirs; however, he first gained

prominence as a passionate collector of their

paintings.

This exhibition is an invitation to (re)discover

an important Impressionist, who for at least the

past fifteen years has been widely celebrated

as the painter of the modern metropolis of

Paris. Caillebotte was also an avid rower and

sailor, and for the first time, the focus is on

his marked preference for river scenes and

seascapes: colourful, glowing depictions of

rowers on the Yerres, the Normandy coast,

the banks of the Seine, and the sailboats at

Argenteuil.

how to aCquire simPLy the worLd’s finest fur

Kopenhagen Fur offers nothing less than

the world’s finest fur, Kopenhagen Purple.

So simple is that. To get hold of the Purple

quality is yet another story and therefore it

has been decided to make a list of customers

available to retailers. The list contains major

holders of mink, chinchilla and swakara in

the Kopenhagen Purple quality.

Despite the financial crisis that has

taken the world by storm demand for

luxury is expected to remain strong. Luxury

customers have not changed habits, but are

looking for new and more private shopping

channels. According to Scandinavia Retail

Institute, the new tendency is to avoid

public shopping. Discreet shopping is no

news to the wealthier consumers, but the

financial crisis has been an accelerator for

the development.

This tendency confirms what

Kopenhagen Fur believes; the demand for

Kopenhagen Purple skins will continue

to be relatively strong in spite of the

financial crisis.

The February auction will hold an

offering of 35,000 Purple skins – the first

offering of this quality in the current sales

season.

- The Purple quality is an important

and valuable factor establishing

Kopenhagen Fur as the provider of the

world’s best mink skins. Farmers are

constantly working on improving the

quality of the skins and we find that the

skins classified as Kopenhagen Purple

Velvet, which is less than one per cent

of the total offering, are of a quality that

is second to none, says Erik Neergaard,

Kopenhagen Fur’s sales director.

The list below shows which

customers bought Purple skins at

Kopenhagen Fur during last season.
