POWELL VALLY MILLWORK

EXPANSION

Woodworking Network recently showcased the expansion and new equipment for KFIA Member Powell Valley Millwork. The new line will further enable them to respond to

customer demand for Poplar mouldings and millwork. Below are some highlights from the article.

Powell Valley Millwork in Clay City, Kentucky, is not your typi-cal millwork company. In the first place, it is dedicated to working with only one species of wood: poplar. While it’s a family busi-ness with the third generation now in key management, it also has important stakeholders in active management who are not related to the family. Located in a rural area, it is no backwater when it comes to technology, currently putting in a state-of-the-art scanning rough mill.

Powell Valley’s focus on selling poplar products in truck-load quantities puts a heavy emphasis on rough mill operations for maximum efficient use of resources and top-level productivity. That’s why the most recent addition to the plant is a sophisticated scanning rough mill line that will be able to process 65,000 board feet of lumber in a single 8-hour shift with only six people required to operate it.

Powell Valley expects the increased productivity to be impres-sive. To put the change into numbers, Jimmy Thornberry said the new line takes only six to seven minutes to process a 1,200-

board-feet unit of lumber. It takes three times that on the existing line, he said. Once the new line is fully operational, he said, they plan to sell the old rough mill line and add additional moulders for more capabilities.

THE LATEST ON THE U.S./

CHINA TRADE TALKS

T

he Hardwood Federation is working with KFIA to

keep our members up-to-date on the ongoing discussions between the U.S. and China regarding the tariff issue. Discussions between high level senior White House offi-cials and Chinese President' Xi representatives are head-ing back to the negotiating table. President Trump and President Xi have also met at the G-20 Economic Confer-ence in Osaka, Japan.

Earlier in July the Hardwood Federation team and members of the industry met with key members of the Trump Administration to discuss the impacts of the current trade dispute with China on U.S. hardwood businesses. John Foley, BPM Lumber LLC., Orn Gudmundsson, Northland Corp., Matthew Netterville, Netterville Lumber, Dana Cole, Hardwood Federation and lobbyist Pat Rita, met with Chief Agriculture Negotiator Ambassador Gregg Doud and Gilbert Kaplan, Under Secretary of Commerce for Internation-al Trade. Both Ambassador Doud and the Under Secretary are part of the negotiating team and are directly involved in talks with their Chinese counterparts.

During both meetings they made clear the importance of including economic benefits for hardwood in any final trade agree-ment with China and also shared economic data (provided by the American Hardwood Export Council). Industry representatives did a great job explaining how the industry has been impacted by the trade war, how hardwood exports to China support the entire industry, domestic and foreign, and the importance of the hardwood industry to rural communities. The omission of hardwood from USDA relief programs and difficulty securing lines of credit was also discussed.

Both Ambassador Doud and Under Secretary Kaplan appeared sincerely moved by the narrative and were very candid about the ongoing negotiations. The meetings were successful in making them realize the significant and devastating consequenc-es the trade disruptions have had on our industry and will contin-ue to have without timely resolution. It is clear that the Trump Administration is very committed to seeing these negotiations through and that there are conversations every day with China. However there are no promises that can be make about timing or what a final deal will look like.

The bottom line is that trade is being handled exclusively by the Administration. Meeting with these individuals that are directly involved in the negotiations was important to raise aware-ness of the impacts on the industry, educate them on the severity of the situation for many businesses, and continue the dialog with key contacts. It is also important that USDA, Commerce, USTR and the Executive Office have all heard from hardwood leaders and the Hardwood Federation over the last few weeks and they have heard the same message consistently. These people all

gional meetings. talk and work together on trade strategy. Now they have a common baseline to refer to regarding the hard-wood industry.

The current tariff levels on U.S. ex-ports to and from China will remain in place at this time. This includes the tariffs on hardwood exports as talks continue. Sources are report-ing that the U.S. is pushing China to purchase more agricultural prod-ucts from the U.S. No confirmation announcement has been made that arrangements for additional ag products purchasing is part of the implementation plans at this time.

TREE FARM COMMITTEE

ACCEPTING NOMINATIONS

FOR LOGGER AND TREE FARMER

OF THE YEAR

T

he Tree Farm Committee is now accept-ing nominations for Logger of the Year

and Tree Farmer of the Year which is honored yearly at the KFIA Annual Meeting in the spring. The first step in the process is to submit a completed application with information on the candidate and then the Tree Farm Committee reviews the applications and narrows the choice down to two to three candidates as finalists and then visits the operations and makes a final decision.

Nominations are being accepted until August 15 and will then be reviewed at the tree farm meeting and field visits will be set up with the finalists. The winners will be determined at the Tree Farm Committee meeting in February, 2020. These awards are an excellent way to honor those who do a good job in forestry related activities that often get little attention. Nomination forms are available on the KFIA website at www.kfia.org, under Recent News or contact the office with any questions.

Anyone is welcome to nominate either the Logger or Tree Farmer of the Year. The Logger of the Year needs to operate in Kentucky and should not be on the Bad Actor list. The Tree Farmer of the Year needs to manage forest land in Kentucky and be a member of the American Tree Farm System. Certification in the Tree Farm System is available at no charge to all woodland owners who are actively managing their forestland.

The winners will be honored at the KFIA Annual Meeting at the Brown Hotel in Louisville, KY during the Awards Luncheon sched-uled for April 8, 2020. The winners will also receive plaques and a Stihl chainsaw through support from Bryan Equipment Sales.
