The author is requested toprovide three copies of the typescriptand figures, and should keep a copy.

Author's disks

Development can use author's word-processor disks (5i and 3i") instead ofrekeying accepted articles. Thisincreases both the speed and accuracyof proof production. With your letter ofprovisional acceptance, you will be sentfull instructions on formatting andsaving your manuscript on disk. Pleasesend a copy of your disk with 2 printedcopies of your final revised manuscript.Disks will be returned.

Proofs

Authors will receive two sets of proofs, one for correction and return toEditorial Office. Authors may berequired to pay for alterations in proofother than those needed to correctprinter's errors.

Layout and style

A short title of not more than 40characters, for use as page headings, should be supplied and at least 3 keywords for indexing papers.A summary must be provided at thebeginning of the text. It should notexceed 500 words. Acknowledgementsshould be placed before the list ofreferences.

The list of references must be given inalphabetical order of author's names. The titles of journals should beabbreviated in accordance with theWorld List of Scientific Periodicals,4th edn (1963). The following style isused:Lawrence, P. and Johnston, P. (1988).

Cell lineage of the Drosophilaabdomen. Development 99,197-208.

Citations in the text are given in thefollowing form: Jones and Smith(1960) or (Jones and Smith, 1960).Where there are more than twoauthors citations should be in theform (Jones et al. 1960). Where morethan one paper by the same author(s)have been published in the same yearthey are cited as Jones (1960a), Jones(1960b) etc.

Unpublished observations, includingresults submitted for publication, should be cited as such in the textonly, and not in the reference list.Personal communications, i.e. theunpublished observations of otherscientists, will only be published whensubstantiated by written permission.

Authors will receive 200 reprints freeof charge and may order additionalcopies when proofs are returned.

Text figures/photographs

These should be numbered in a singleseries (Fig. 1, Figs 2, 3 etc), in theorder in which they are referred to inthe text. Legends for all illustrationsshould be typed together, separatelyfrom the main text. Authors shouldsubmit three copies for reviewers.Copies of the photographic plates mustbe of suitable standard for reviewers tojudge the quality of the work;photocopies are not acceptable.Original figures should be kept by theauthor until the manuscript has beenaccepted for publication.Text figures and photographs ideallyshould be at final size and occupyeither 1 or 2 columns. The maximumprinted size for illustrations is210mmx168mm for a whole page or210mmx81mm for a single column.Labelling can be inserted by the authorproviding that the lattering conforms tojournal style and size. Otherwiselabelling should be indicated on aduplicate marked set of prints or on atracing-paper overlay bearingaccurately marked outlines of theobjects indicated. Figure parts shouldbe labelled in upper case and letteringon the plates should be in lower case.Magnification should be indicated, where relevant, by a scale line on orbeside the illustration. Each illustrationshould have the name of the authorand the figure number written on theback, together with indication oforientation and any proposed reductionin the t
