Rung 1: Keyser 60, Petersburg 12By Michael Minnich

Tribune Sports [email protected]

PETERSBURG—TheKeyser Golden Tornadodominated the trenches intheir season opener, open-ing huge holes for theirrunners and holding thePetersburg Vikings with-out a rushing first down ina lopsided 60-12 victory.

For KHS, Danny Fifescored all three times hetouched the ball, runningfor 166 yards, while J.R.Flint was nearly as effi-cient, finishing with threecarries for 61 yards and twotouchdowns and adding aninterception return for aTD and several strong puntreturns.

Petersburg received tostart the game and gainedone first down via penaltybefore stalling.

The snap on fourth downwas over the punter’s headand was smothered for aturnover on downs at thePetersburg 19.

Flint scored on the firstplay from scrimmage, andFife’s kick was good, givingKeyser a 7-0 lead with10:34 left in the first quar-ter.

Petersburg got a big playon first down when CoreyPool found Kelson Thorne

for a gain of 34 yards, but arun for a loss and a holdingpenalty brought up 2nd-and-35, and even passesfrom Pool to Josh Bane for12 yards and Thorne for 17weren’t enough.

Petersburg turned theball over on downs afteran incomplete pass.

Keyser, starting fromtheir own 31, needed threeplays this time: a 14-yardpass from Cody Eversoleto Dakota Proud, a 10-yardrun by Blake Ravenscroft, and finally a 45-yard scam-per by Fife, with BlakeRavenscroft providing a keyblock.

Fife finished the job withanother PAT: 14-0, KHS,with 7:48 to go in the firstquarter.

A Drew Roy sack on thirddown forced Petersburg topunt.

Keyser marched 82 yardsin three plays: Flint ran for25, Austin Ravenscroft forsix, and Fife went the final51.

It may have worn himout a tad: the extra point hitthe uprights, no good.

Still, the lead was 20points at the 3:26 mark.

Josh Napier’s sack onthird down forced anotherVikings three-and-out, andFlint returned the ensuingpunt to the Petersburg 14.

Eversole went to work, finding Amonte Turner fora seven-yard gain on firstdown, then keeping the ballfor a seven-yard TD run upthe middle.

Fife was true: 27-0, 1:13left in the first quarter.

Petersburg again bene-fited from a generous passinterference call to get afirst down, but punted soonafter.

Flint again ripped off afine return to the Petersburg6, and two Garrett Critestotes gave Keyser their fiveTD of the evening.

Fife’s kick was good with9:40 left in the half.

If there was one problemfor Keyser in the half, itwas their pass defense: onsecond down, Pool found awide-open Thorne, whotook his time embellishingthe first Viking TD of theseason, a 72-yard pass.

After a penalty, the passfor two points was incom-plete.

Pool then interceptedEversole on first down, and,two plays later, found AlexSee for a 46-yard TD strike.

The run was no good, butPetersburg had at least qui-eted the large Keyser crowd:34-12, 7:48 to go in thehalf.

Rung 2: Keyser 51, Fort Hill 22By Michael Minnich

Tribune Sports [email protected]

KEYSER—The KeyserGolden Tornado scored 37straight points, a run start-ed by Josh Coffman'sblocked punt for a touch-down, to break a 14-14 half-time tie, defeating the FortHill Sentinels, 51-22, at Tor-nado Alley.

It's just the seventh timeKeyser has won in 45 meet-ings with Fort Hill, as wellas the largest margin of vic-tory in the series for KHS,breaking the mark set in theGolden Tornado's 26-0 winin 1984.

It's also the worst lossthat Fort Hill has suffered toa school in the currentAMAC (Allegany, BishopWalsh, Mountain Ridge,Northern, Southern,Hampshire, Keyser, andFrankfort) in the program's66-year history.

Blake Ravenscroft rushedfor 89 yards, all but seven inthe second half, on 11 car-ries, finding the end zonethree times after intermis-sion and also rushing for atwo-point conversion.

Danny Fife carried 18times for 111 yards and twotouchdowns for KHS, whoracked up 399 yards of of-fense.

Keyser started the gamewith a solid drive, gainingfour first downs before asack of Cody Eversole onthird by Cody Arigo and anincomplete pass on fourthdown turned the ball over toFort Hill on downs.

The KHS defense, though, drove the Sentinels

in the wrong direction onthree consecutive plays.

A 12-yard punt gave theGolden Tornado prime fieldposition at the Fort Hill28.

KHS used their groundgame exclusively to get onthe board: Cody Eversolescrambled for a first downon third-and-7, then Dan-ny Fife went for seven andGarrett Crites for six togive KHS first-and-goal atthe Fort Hill 5.

Two Fife totes finishedthe drive, but the juniormissed the extra point: 6-0,Keyser, with 24.2 secondsleft in the first quarter.

Zac Elbin fumbled on

the first play of Fort Hill'ssubsequent drive, butKeyser gave it back threeplays later when Eversolewas intercepted by TravisBush, who returned theball to the Keyser 31.

Elbin then ran for 12yards, the first rushing firstdown against the KHS de-fense this year.

A flag, an 8-yard keeperby Hunter Squires, and asix-yard run by DevinShreve finished off the FortHill drive.

Chris King's extra pointput the Sentinels in front,7-6, with 10:28 left in thesecond quarter.

Keyser went small-big

on their next drive: Critesfor 14, Fife for 17, Crites for8, Fife for 4, Crites for 8,Blake Ravenscroft for 6,Crites for 10, and finallyFife for 12, his second scoreof the game.

Crites ran for two: 14-7,KHS, with 7:29 left in thehalf.

Fort Hill went three-and-out, but a holding penaltyon third down negated aKeyser first down in FortHill territory a few playslater.

KHS turned the ball overon downs at the Fort Hill30.

That's when things gotinteresting: Elbin ran for a

70-yard score, but initiallythe play was ruled outthanks to a flag.

After some consultation, the officials picked up theflag: TD good, then kickgood, 14-14 with 1:51 to goin the half.

Eversole fumbled to endKeyser's next drive at theFort Hill 40, and the Sen-tinels ran two plays to closeout the half.

Fort Hill had a nice re-turn on the opening kickoffof the second half negatedby a flag; the Sentinelswent three-and-out.

Keyser had good fieldposition at the Fort Hill43, but they too could not

move the chains.A good punt by Fife

backed FH to their own 7,and an intentional ground-ing flag, which was nearly asafety, backed the ball to theFort Hill 1.

Squires pushed the pilefor a yard, bringing up adicey punt for Fort Hill.

Josh Coffman took theball out of the punter's handfor a Keyser touchdownwith 6:48 left in the thirdquarter.

Keyser took a timeoutbefore going for two, andFife did the deed, pushingthe lead to 22-14.

Things got worse for theSentinels: on the first playfrom scrimmage, DevinShreve fumbled, and Flintrecovered at the Fort Hill19.

It took Keyser three playsto cash it in: Blake Raven-scroft ran for 10, Fife forfive, then Ravenscroft gotthe call again from fouryards out.

Ravenscroft ran for two, also, but the play was negat-ed for a block below thewaist.

Keyser tried again fromthe 16, but the pass wasbehind Crites.

Still, Keyser led by twoscores, 28-14, with 5:37 leftin the third quarter.

Fort Hill used their pass-ing game to move the stickstwice, with Squires findingMicah May for 21 yards andTravis Bush for 10.

Shreve, though, fumbledon the next play, and JoshNapier was there to scoop itat the Keyser 45.

Rung 3: Keyser 40, Northern 0By Michael Minnich

Tribune Sports [email protected]

KEYSER—Danny Fifescored three touchdownsas the Keyser Golden Tor-nado pitched a shutout ofthe Northern Huskies, 40-0, at Tornado Alley on Hallof Fame Night.

Fife finished with just28 rushing yards, but alsohad six receiving and 78 onthe flashiest play of thenight, a kickoff return toopen the second half; thejunior also ran for a two-point conversion andkicked one successful extrapoint.

Garrett Crites rushed for91 yards and added nine onone reception, while BlakeRavenscroft had a team-high 93 yards on theground.

For Northern, quarter-back Aaron Broadwaterand running backs JeremyBender and Tommy Durstwere involved in every of-fensive play save punts.

Broadwater threw for 40yards and ran for 35 yardson 13 carries, while Bendercaught three passes for 10yards and ran for just six

yards on 10 carries.Durst had a reception

for 10 yards and eight car-ries for seven yards.

Northern moved the balltwice on passes from AaronBroadwater to JeremyBender on the openingdrive of the game beforepunting.

Both teams went three-and-out on their nexttouches, then Keyser wentto work.

Garrett Crites ran for 17yards, Blake Ravenscroftfor 13, then, two plays lat-er, Ravenscroft went for 11again.

That, combined with aflag on Northern, movedthe ball to the Huskies 12.

Ravenscroft ran againfor seven, then Fife fin-ished the drive from five.

Fife's extra point gaveKHS a 7-0 lead with 2:06left in the first quarter.

Northern went three-and-out, then a promisingKeyser drive was short-circuited when J.R. Flintfumbled after a long passcompletion.

After another Northernthree-and-out, AmonteTurner's good punt returnset KHS up in Northern

territory again at the 43.On third-and-5, Blake

Ravenscroft toted for 15,then Crites carried for 20more, getting tripped upthree yards short of thegoal line.

Fife earned his secondTD from there, but missedthe extra point: 13-0,Keyser, with 8:53 left in thefirst quarter.

Northern then mountedtheir best drive of the half, moving the ball to theKeyser 27 before turningthe ball over on downswith 4:18 to go in the half.

Crites' 21-yard run onsecond down moved theball into Northern terri-tory, then Ravenscroft ranfor 14, then, two plays lat-er, for 15.

On third-and-5, Fifemade a rare reception for again of six and a fresh set ofdowns at the Northern 9.

Quarterback Eversole, pressured right, kept forthe touchdown, then Fiferan for two.

Keyser led, 21-0, at thehalf.

It didn't take long forKHS to add to that: Fifemuffed the kickoff initial-ly, but more than recov-

ered, going 78 yards to thehouse thanks to a nice spinmove and a few brokentackles.

The extra point wasblocked: 27-0.

Northern moved thechains once, but DustinLucas intercepted Broad-water on third down, re-turning the ball to mid-field.

Keyser looked like they'dstruck quickly again, but areally nice 50-yard TD runby Eversole on first downwas nullified by a holdingpenalty.

That killed the drive, and KHS punted.

Wes Nelson immediate-ly took the ball right back, recovering a fumble onfirst down.

But, after completing a9-yard pass to Crites, Ever-sole was picked by Benderon second down.

Northern could notmove the ball a foot on arun and two incompletepasses, and punted.

A fine return by Flintwas canceled out by a flag.

KHS did it the hard way, going 90 yards.

Rung 4: Allegany 14, Keyser 12By Michael Minnich

Tribune Sports [email protected]

C U M B E R L A N D —Here's the kicker.

Allegany had one thatthey trusted, and Keyserdidn't.

Two failed two-pointconversions by the GoldenTornado, and two madeextra points by Allegany'sChris Fram, were the dif-ference in a 14-12 thrillerat Greenway Avenue Sta-dium.

Keyser, trailing by eightpoints late, forced twofumbles.

Danny Fife cashed inthe first from 20 yards

out with 3:05 left, but wasstuffed at the line to keepKHS from tying the scoreon the two-point attempt.

The second came withunder two minutes to go,but Keyser, facing third-and-3, threw incomplete, then Allegany's defensestopped Blake Raven-scroft for a loss to sealthe game.

Carter Imes threw for atouchdown and ran foranother on fourth-and-goal from the 1 for Alle-gany, who avenged a 34-0loss at Tornado Alley lastyear.

Fram was huge for theCampers; in addition tothe pair of PATs, he caught

an 8-yard pass on fourth-and-4 to set up the even-tual winning touchdown.

Cody Eversole's 8-yardTD toss to Garrett Critesaccounted for the otherKHS score.

Fife led KHS with 123yards on 22 carries.

Keyser received the ballto start the game.

Both teams got stopson their first defensivepossession, and a 57-yardreturn by J.R. Flint, plus apersonal foul penalty, gaveKHS prime field positionat the Allegany 18.

But three negligibleruns brought up fourth-and-11, and Cody Ever-sole missed Garrett Crites

in the end zone, turningthe ball over on downswith 6:48 left in the firstquarter.

After a short run on firstdown, Alco quarterbackCarter Imes evaded theKeyser rush, throwingdown the right sidelineto Christian Thomas, whoevaded the first wave ofKHS defenders and went78 yards to the house.

Chris Fram's extra pointgave Allegany an early 7-0 lead with 5:56 left in thefirst quarter.

But speedy freshmanAmonte Turner answeredwith an 82-yard kickoff

return; that, plus a horse-collar penalty, movedKHS just three yards fromthe end zone.

Allegany held for twoplays, stopping DannyFife for no gain and sack-ing Eversole for five yards, but on the third, Eversoleconnected with Crites inthe end zone on a similarplay to the failed fourthdown.

It was the Campers'turn for a big return: Dar-ion Lopez ripped off 63yards, although aided by ablock in the back.

Keyser, though, held,forcing a punt.

The Golden Tornadomounted the longest drivefor either side in the half, gaining four first downs, but a holding penalty anda sack put Keyser in third-and-long.

A personal foul on Al-legany made the yardagea bit more manageable, but Keyser turned the ballover on downs on an in-complete pass on fourth-and-7.

Allegany gained theironly first down of the halfon a 21-yard MadisonWolford run, but punted.

Rung 5: Keyser 12, Hampshire 7By Michael Minnich

Tribune Sports [email protected]

KEYSER—Enteringthisseason, the Keyser GoldenTornado had defeated theHampshire Trojans tenstraight times, by an averageof 31 points.

It wasn't nearly that easythis time around, as KHSneeded a stop on the finalpossession to preserve a 12-7 victory on Homecomingnight at Tornado Alley.

For Keyser, Garrett Critesscored the eventual win-ning touchdown in the thirdquarter and finished theevening with 37 rushingyards and two key catchesfor 23 yards.

Blake Ravenscroft rushedfor 53 yards and a touch-down and had a catch for 10yards.

Danny Fife, despite takinga nasty hit in the secondquarter, carried the ball 19times for 62 yards.

Amonte Turner rushedfor 35 yards.

For Hampshire, CalabLandis completed 7 of 11

passes for 103 yards andalso rushed for the loneHHS score.

Trevor Largent had 82receiving yards for Hamp-shire, who were withoutleading rusher DenardHartwell.

Hampshire went three-and-out on their first pos-session.

Three Danny Fife runsyielded a Keyser first down, but KHS was unable toovercome a false start onfirst down and turned theball over on downs at theHampshire 35.

After an exchange ofpunts, Fife's sack on thirddown for a loss of 10 forcedanother HHS punt on theopening play of the secondquarter.

Again, Keyser was un-done by a flag, this time ahold, but were fortunate notto be punished more, as aninterception on third downwas dropped.

Hampshire, starting fromtheir own 20 after a touch-back on the punt, thenmounted their best drive ofthe half.

Calab Landis connectedwith Trevor Largent for again of 18 yards on firstdown, Lucas Powers ran forfive, then Dalton Clowercarried for nine to the Keyser48.

Three straight flags, twoon Keyser and one onHampshire, followed by asack by Wes Nelson for a lossof 10, stopped the Trojans.

Amonte Turner ran for12 yards across midfield onfirst down for Keyser, but itappeared that Hampshirewould force another punt.

But Fife was hit hard frombehind on the kick, and thesubsequent flag gave theTornado a fresh set of downsat the Hampshire 30.

They took advantage:Blake Ravenscroft ran for 15,Austin Ravenscroft for 6,Blake for 4, and Austin for 1brought up first-and-goal.

Turner ran for two, thenCody Eversole dove for one.

Austin Ravenscroft fin-ished the drive from oneyard out, then Fife's extrapoint was blocked.

BERKELEY SPRINGS--Keyser and BerkeleySprings entered Friday nightwith the best and worstscoring defenses in WestVirginia Class AA, respec-tively, and nothing hap-pened to alter those per-ceptions, as the Golden Tor-

nado rolled to a 47-0 victo-ry.

Danny Fife got KHS onthe board with 8:12 left inthe first quarter, and TylerHamilton, one of three KHSkickers to attempt a PATon the evening, added theextra point.

A long pass to Zack John-son set up Keyser's secondscore, another short Fiferun, and Hamilton's made

kick doubled the lead to 14-0.

Special teams took care ofthe third score, as Eric Wiltreversed fields perfectly be-hind some good blockingfor a punt return TD.

Keyser had a long passingTD from Cody Eversole toRyan Streets wiped awayon a flag for an ineligible re-ceiver late in the first quar-ter, but the same combina-

tion produced a touchdowna few minutes later.

T.J. Whetzel's extra pointpushed the lead to 28-0.

Berkeley Springs' bestdrive of the game endedwhen they turned the ballover on downs at the Keyser38 with 4:36 left in the sec-ond quarter.

Keyser's passing gamewas clicking like no othergame this season: Eversole

connected with Streets andGarrett Crites to move theTornado offense into scoringposition, and Blake Raven-scroft cashed in the pigskinon a 6-yard run.

The extra point was nogood: 34-0, KHS.

After intermission, Keyseradded a pair of third-quar-ter TDs on a 1-yard run byAustin Ravenscroft and a30-yard scamper by Blake

Ravenscroft.Hamilton made the sec-

ond PAT, setting up the finalmargin.

Johnson's interceptionwas the highlight of thefourth quarter.

Keyser now holds a 15-4lead in the series and havewon all seven meetings sincethe series resumed after ahiatus of eight years in2006.

KEYSER—Danny Fifeand defense.

Those have been thebright spots for the sixth-ranked Keyser GoldenTornado all season.

And, man, did bothcome up big on Fridaynight.

After a scoreless firsthalf, Fife found the endzone three times, andplayed a big role on theother side of the ball, too,as the best scoring de-fense in Class AA allowedonly a late TD in a 20-6win over the JeffersonCougars last night.

Fife carried the ball 32times, 22 in the secondhalf alone, for 185 yards,149 after intermission, and those three big touch-downs.

It was a much sweeterending for the junior full-back than last year'smeeting with the Cougars, when Fife was knockedout with an injury.

Defense ruled the dayearly: Austin Ravenscroftintercepted the ball on

Jefferson's second drive, but Keyser, starting fromthe Jefferson 31 after agood return on the play, turned the ball over ondowns at the JHS 15when Fife was stoppedfor a loss on fourth-and-1.

Jefferson mounted theirbest sustained drive ofthe game late in the firstquarter, moving the balldown to the Keyser 13,but a 30-yard field goalattempt by Hunter Col-bert dinged off of the leftupright, no good, with11:04 left in the half.

Keyser countered with agood drive of their own, getting a first-down runfrom Garrett Crites andthree from Fife, but a flagfor a block below thewaist brought up first-and-22.

After two incompletepasses, Cody Eversoleconnected with Crites fora gain of 14, and BlakeRavenscroft was stoppeda yard short on a delayedhand-off on fourth-and-8.

Keyser's defense forcedanother turnover, knock-ing the ball loose fromRynal Newman at the Jef-

ferson 31 with 1:55 left,but Eversole was inter-cepted on fourth-and-9from the Jefferson 19.

Keyser's game plancoming out of the lockerroom was pretty clear.

Fife for 8; Fife for 5;Fife for 3; Fife for 6; Fifefor 6; Fife for 9; butAustin Ravenscroft lostthe ball after a 16-yardgain, and Jefferson tookover at their own 18.

Keyser's defense forceda punt, then KHS went totheir bell cow again.

Fife ran for 20, 2, 3,and the final 3: touch-down, Keyser, with 5:24left in the third quarter.

Tyler Hamilton's extrapoint moved the lead to 7-0.

After Jefferson wentthree-and-out, Keyserdrove down to the Jeffer-son 3 on good runningfrom Fife and AmonteTurner, but Fife wasstopped for a loss of three, then Eversole was sackedon fourth down to turnthe ball over on downs.

Jefferson threw sevenstraight passes on theirdrive, but the final twowere incomplete, and

Keyser got it back ondowns at the Jefferson37.

Fife ran for 33, thenfinished the job with afour-yard tote on the nextplay.

The kick was no good:13-0, Keyser, with 8:55left.

Jefferson drove intoKeyser territory using thepassing of Andrew Kingand a few solid runs, but,on first-and-10 from theKHS 17, King was sackedby Austin Ravenscroft fora big 11-yard loss.

On the next play,Harley Yaider strippedKing of the ball, and ZackJohnson recovered at theKeyser 28.

The Golden Tornadoneeded just two plays toput the nail in the coffin:Blake Ravenscroft ran fora lot (70), then Fife wentfor a big little, pickingup the final two stripes.

Hamilton's kick wastrue: 20-0 with 4:27 left.

Jefferson got a conso-lation prize on a 48-yardstrike from King to Geof-frey Walker with 3:17 left, but Keyser ran out theclock from there.

KEYSER—Sometimes, the stats really do tell thestory.

Keyser's offense: 66plays, 378 yards, fourtouchdowns.

Bridgeport's offense: 32plays, 33 yards, zero points.

It was the performancethat the Golden Tornadomaybe saw in their wildestdreams, but those dreamsbecame reality, as No. 4Keyser dominated No. 2Bridgeport, 25-0.

The Indians managed

just two first downs, one bypenalty.

"I'm shocked by that,"said Keyser coach SeanBiser, whose defense hasallowed the least points inthe state this season.

Keyser, on the otherhand, moved the chains20 times.

"That's what wins:blocking and tackling,"said Biser. "I think thatsomething we've improvedon as the year's went on."

Garrett Crites and BlakeRavenscroft each rushedfor 120 yards, on 16 and 15carries, respectively, whileDanny Fife just missed the

century mark himself, tot-ing 21 times for 99 yardsand two touchdowns.

"That [Bridgeport] de-fense has shut down a lot ofoffenses around the statethis year, and we playedwell, and Danny ran hard,"said Biser.

Ravenscroft and AmonteTurner also found the endzone for the Golden Tor-nado.

Bridgeport's leadingrusher, Brett Hathaway, managed just 35 yards on15 carries, while AnthonyCaldera actually lost fiveyards on 11 carries.

Bridgeport won the toss,

elected to receive, andpunted after three runningplays.

Danny Fife toted twicefor Keyser to move thechains, then Garrett Critespicked up a third-and-6 afew plays later to theBridgeport 45.

Blake Ravenscroft ranfor another first down, then Crites carried for sev-en yards to the Bridgeport26.

Ravenscroft moved thechains again, then, twoplays later, Crites ran for 12yards to the 5.

Fife carried twice to fin-ish the job, and Tyler

Hamilton made the extrapoint: 7-0, Keyser, with3:46 left in the first quar-ter.

"I think Danny kind ofset the tone early. We knewthey'd be keying on him, sowe let Danny run and runand run, and gave him likethree straight plays to be-gin, then we started dish-ing it off. When you get onething going in the Wing T,everything comes off of it,"said Biser.

The Keyser defense thenstuffed Bridgeport againon three runs.

KHS moved the chainsonce on a run by Crites on

Rung 8: Keyser 25, Bridgeport 0third-and-7, but punted.

Fife's boot was downedat the Bridgeport 10.

The two teams then ex-changed a few punts.

Keyser, starting from theBridgeport 36, needed justone play to score: Raven-scroft, to the right.

A poor snap on the extrapoint messed up Hamil-ton's timing, and the kickwas short: 13-0, Keyser, with 5:50 left in the half.

Biser attributed histeam's success to the dif-ferent looks they were pre-senting to the Bridgeport

Keyser won the toss anddeferred possession to thesecond half.

Frankfort went three-

A big return by AmonteTurner from Josh McNeil'sgood punt gave KHS primefield position at the Frank-fort 31.

Garrett Crites carried for14 yards, and Frankfort wasflagged for a horse collar onthe play.

From the Frankfort 9,Danny Fife carried twice fora quick touchdown.

Colton Rodeheavermissed the extra point, butKeyser led, 6-0, with 9:32left in the first quarter.

Frankfort picked up afourth-and-1 after beingstopped on third down, butthe drive stalled at mid-field and punted.

McNeil uncorked anoth-er beauty to the Keyser 8.

It didn't matter: Keyserquickly went 92 yards:Blake Ravenscroft for 19,Fife for 23, Crites for 20,Ravenscroft for 11, Fife for1, then 12, and finallyRavenscroft to the riight

for a 6-yard score.Fife ran for two: Keyser

14, Frankfort 0, with 3:29left in the first quarter.

Frankfort went three-and-out, then Keyser droveagain.

After a short Crites carry,Turner ran for 11, then 10 tothe Frankfort 25.

Facing third-and-5 aftera two short runs, the onlythird down the Frankfortdefense forced in the half,Crites did the job fromthere, scoring on the firstplay of the second quarter.

Crites was stopped onthe two-point try; Keyser20, Frankfort 0, 11:52 left inthe half.

Frankfort gained one firstdown before punting.

Turner returned the kick40 yards to set up a two-play, 40-yard drive: Raven-scroft for 19, Fife for 21.

The run for two wasstopped; Keyser 26, Frank-fort 0 with 8:34 left.

A pass from Shaffer toStephan Buser picked up aFrankfort first down, butthe Falcons punted fourplays later.

Keyser continued theirdominant rushing: Fife for11, Fife for 17, Fife for 13,then Ravenscroft for 18.

A personal foul on Keysermade things a little moredifficult, but Ravenscroftcarried for seven, thenTurner gained nine.

A personal foul on Frank-fort moved the ball to theFHS 14.

Crites went for six, thenRavenscroft finished fromeight yards out.

The run for two was nogood: Keyser 32, Frank-fort 0, with 1:08 left.

Shaffer connected withTyler Crock on two passesfor a first down, but threeincomplete passes set upfourth-and-10.

Shaffer was sacked byRoy for a loss of seven toturn the ball over on downs.

Keyser's deep heave fellincomplete to end the half.

Keyser nearly had to startfrom inside their 1 afterFife slipped on the kick re-turn, but a double person-al foul on Frankfort movedthe ball out from the shad-ow of the goal line.

Frankfort, though, gottheir first stop of the game, and Keyser punted.

A Josh Coffman sackmade Frankfort go three-and-out, but Keyser had abig 91-yard touchdown runby Ravenscroft negated, and they too punted.

Frankfort used a 10-yardpass from Shaffer to ThaneCutter, with a roughing thepasser flag tacked on, tomove into Keyser territoryat the 32.

The Tornado held, though, driving FHS twoyards in the wrong direc-tion.

McNeil came on to at-tempt a 52-yard field goal, which was on line but justshort.

On third down, Keyserfumbled, with Devin Hugh-es recovering for FHS at theKeyser 19.

Shaffer connected withCutter for a gain of 13 onsecond down.

Keyser's goal line defensewas good enough to stopFrankfort three times, buta flag for defensive holdinghanded FHS a fresh set of

downs at the 4.Morgan cashed in the

pigskin from there, endinga run of 114 straight Keyserpoints in the series datingback to Joey Luciw's touch-down late in the first quar-ter of the 2010 game.

McNeil added the extrapoint: Keyser 32, Frankfort7, with 11:49 left.

A 58-yard run by Raven-scroft on second down, withCrock making the TD-sav-ing tackle, set Keyser up atthe Frankfort 2.

But Fife and Ravenscroftwere each stopped twice, and FHS got it back ondowns at their own 1.

The Falcons drove totheir own 45 before turningthe ball over downs.

Keyser did the same afterfour plays.

Shaffer completed threepasses--and got the benefitof two more 15-yard flagson Keyser--to drive the Fal-cons down to the Keyser 15,but a flag for offensive passinterference on third-and-4 killed the drive.

Keyser took a knee torun the clock out.

Rung 13: Keyser 42, Bridgeport 14By Michael Minnich

Tribune Sports [email protected]

K E Y S E R — H e l l o ,Wheeling!

The No. 2 Keyser Gold-en Tornado (12-1) will playfor a state championshipnext Friday night for thefirst time since 1969,knocking off the BridgeportIndians (9-3) for the secondtime this season at Torna-do Alley, 42-14, in the ClassAA semifinals yesterday af-ternoon.

This 2012 edition of theTornado also broke theschool record for wins, pre-viously held by the 1956(11-0 and state champions)and the 2002 (11-2 andstate semifinalists) teams.

"It's what you work for. When you set out everyyear, that's your goal," saidKeyser coach Sean Biser. "Itfeels great. We're not doneyet. We have another gameto go, but this is a big hur-dle, not only for this year, but for our program. We'vebeen knocking on the doorfor several years."

KHS will face either No.1 Wayne or No. 4 Robert C.Byrd at 7:30 p.m. on Fridayat Wheeling Island Stadi-um; that semifinal endedafter press time last night.

Wayne eliminatedKeyser in the quarterfinalslast year en route to a statetitle.

Blake Ravenscroftrushed 13 times for 241yards and three touch-downs of 28, 72, and 55yards, while Danny Fifecarried 12 times for 74yards and a score.

"Early on, [Blake] madea couple of plays whenthere wasn't a whole lotthere," said Biser. "Theyshut down our inside gameearly, so we just went awayfrom it."

Cody Eversole threw for50 yards, including a 37-yard touchdown pass toJ.R. Flint, and AustinRavenscroft also ran for ashort TD.

For Bridgeport, BrettHathaway found the go-ing difficult, carrying 33times for 135 yards, par-tially inflated by a 34-yardcarry in the second half, and a touchdown.

Cameron Stanley rushedsix times for 39 yards and aTD.

Troy Anderson complet-ed four of nine passes for 88yards with an interception.

"Fundamentals. It goesback to getting off of blocksand running to the foot-ball...just having that men-tality," said Biser of his de-fense's play.

Keyser has never lost infour home playoff gamessince Tornado Alley openedin 2009.

"I'm really pleased thatour community came outand supported our kids,"said Biser. "They were loudand really got into the game.It was just great."

Keyser deferred posses-sion until the second half, and, just like the first meet-ing between the two teams,a 25-0 KHS win, the Indi-ans could not move the ballon their first drive, puntingafter two unsuccessful runsby Brett Hathaway and asack by Josh Coffman onthird down.

After Amonte Turner's36-yard return, it took KHSonly one play to score: BlakeRavenscroft burnedthrough several tackles fora 28-yard score.

Beau Horner's kick wasgood: 7-0, Keyser, with 9:36left in the first quarter.

"That's the way we script-ed it up before the game. That was huge, just for ourkids to come out and setthat tone," said Biser. "Weknew [Bridgeport] wasn'tgoing to give up and goaway."

Bridgeport had difficultyreceiving Danny Fife'sbouncing kickoff, but a flagon Keyser for a blow to thehead moved the ball fromthe BHS 3 to the 18.

After Cameron Stanleycarried for 12 yards on firstdown, Hathaway ran forjust five yards on three car-ries, and BHS punted.

After short runs byRavenscroft and Fife,

Ravenscroft got the callagain, romping 72 yards forhis second score of thegame.

Keyser led, 14-0, afterHorner's kick with 5:24 leftin the first quarter.

Bridgeport showed a rarepass to start their thirddrive, and Troy Andersonconnected with Stanley fora gain of 12 yards to theBHS 46.

Anthony Bonamicorushed for 10 yards to movethe ball into Keyser territo-ry at the 44, then Hath-away carried on fourstraight plays for a total of 19yards.

Stanley rushed for fiveon third-and-3 to move theball to the Keyser 20.

Anderson then threw in-complete, handed off toHathaway for a loss of one, then kept for six yards.

After a Bridgeport time-out, on fourth-and-5 fromthe Keyser 15, Bonamicowent right on what ap-peared to be a halfback pass, but never released the ball, losing ten yards.

The Indians defense, though, stood tall, stoppingTurner for a loss of six on theinitial play of the secondquarter and forcing a punt.

From the Bridgeport 39,Hathaway ran for 16, thensix, and Stanley carried fornine: first down at theKeyser 30.

The Tornado took a time-out to settle the defense, and it worked: Hathawaywas stopped for no gain, then ran for three.

Bridgeport, struggling toget the correct personnel

on the field for a big third-and-7, used their secondtimeout.

Hathaway was stoppedfor a loss of one, bringing upfourth-and-8.

Anderson's pass acrossthe line of scrimmage, aplay so effective in a key spotagainst Frankfort last week, was correctly read by West-on Nelson, who picked offthe ball.

But a hustling Hathawaystripped the ball just as Nel-son was about to cross thegoal line, and fell on it for atouchback, keeping the In-dians in the game.

"He should have beencalled down, was what Ithought. The guy that calledit a fumble was 20 yards be-hind the play," said Biser."There's no way he couldhave seen that the ball cameloose."

The Indians could notsustain the momentum, go-ing three-and-out.

Ravenscroft moved thechains for Keyser with a 5-yard rush on third-and-4,then, facing a third-and-7,Keyser quarterback CodyEversole threw a fade passto J.R. Flint, who made thecatch, dodged the initialtackle, and ran in to theend zone at the scoreboardend for a 37-yard score.

Horner was true again:21-0, Tornado, with 3:22left in the half.

Christian Smith sackedAnderson on third down toforce a Bridgeport punt, but, with 1:47 on the clock,Eversole threw incompletetwice, then Turner wasstopped for a loss.

Fife's punt was downed atthe Bridgeport 10, and An-derson found Bonamico fora 39-yard gain through theair to midfield.

The Indians had time forone last play, but Drew Roysacked Anderson to sendboth teams to the lockerroom with Keyser leading,21-0.

To open the second half,Keyser got a 21-yard runfrom Hunter Kasmier onsecond down, then, onthird-and-5, a perfectly ex-ecuted face double handoffsent Ravenscroft runningdown the right side for a 55-yard score.

Horner was again true:28-0, 9:22 left in the thirdquarter.

Bridgeport then mounteda lengthy drive, with An-derson connecting withCullen Cutright for an 8-yard pass on third down, then Hathaway carried forthree straight plays, gaining30 yards to the Keyser 28.

An unsportsmanlike con-duct flag on the Indiansbacked the ball up 15 yards, but Anderson and Bonam-ico connected for a 28-yardgainer to the KHS 15.

Hathaway ran three timesfor five yards, then, after aBridgeport timeout, An-derson passed to Cutrightagain for a 9-yard gain tothe Keyser 1.

Hathaway was stoppedfor no gain, but Stanley fin-ished the job, and, after al-lowing 53 straight points toKeyser this season, Bridge-port got seven back, trailing28-7 with 3:47 left in thethird quarter.

Keyser countered: Fifefor 11, Ravenscroft for fiveand 21, Fife for 19 and three,Ravenscroft for eight, Fifefor seven, then, on the firstplay of the fourth quarter,Fife finished from a yardout: 35-7, KHS, after aHorner kick with 11:56 leftin the game.

The next drive was al-most all Hathaway: exceptfor a Stanley carry on thesecond play of the drive,Hathaway carried on everyplay of a 7-play, 57-yarddrive, scoring from eightyards out.

The kick was good: 35-14with 8:51 yet.

Bridgeport inexplicablydid not try an onside kick—here or at any point in thegame—and Keyser went towork from their own 25.

"I was surprised. We wereready for it, even when wehad our normal return[team] out there," said Bis-er. "I think maybe theywould have onsided there, but they were ready for itand kicked it deep."

Fife ran for 18, thencaught a pass for a gain of 13yards two plays later.

Blake Ravenscroft's 42-yard carry two plays later setup brother Austin's divefrom a yard out: 42-14 with6:11 left.

Bridgeport, facing fourth-and-14 after a Roy sack, tried a fake punt—and hada receiver, until Eric Wiltstepped up from his puntreturn spot to deliver a jar-ring hit, making the ballfall incomplete and takingaway what slim hopes theIndians had of victory.
