14th November 2019

From the Principal

On Monday morning we waved goodbye to all Year

5 and 6 students and teachers as they boarded

buses to take them on a week long camp to the

Grantville Lodge in Grantville Vic.

There was an audible buzz of excitement as our

students stowed their bags into the cargo hold,

kissed their parents goodbye and took their seat on

the bus.

I’m sure there will be many photos to display in next week’s newsletter that

will highlight all of the different and challenging activities they have planned

for the week.

Let’s hope that the weather has been kind to them and that they were able

to get out and enjoy the great outdoors.

ART ROOM NEWS

Year 1 and 2 have been learning how to build a model in 3D and a lot of initial ground work

had to be undertaken before the students could actually commence their projects. Prep

Art sessions were held covering wire techniques, building, using safety glasses and pliers,

magic clay and then adding detail with paint

They started out with two simple paper balls. After joining the two balls together, the

students then used multi-coloured wire to form the limbs of their creatures.

Future Making for Every Student

Next they added Magic Clay to cover the bodies and create the details of the animals such as eyes, nose and mouth. There are certainly some very weird and wonderful creatures emerging from the Art Room and I look forward to seeing the finished product.

Although the students are still in the moulding stage, eventually, when the clay is dry, they will paint and colour their wonderful creations giving them the detail to bring their creatures to life.

The foundation students have been learning about size and colour. They have learnt

that they can create the same shape in different sizes and colours and then arrange

them from biggest to smallest to create bright and creative works of art.

They are also learning how to use scissors safely, how to cut a straight line, how to paste and effectively arrange their work. Sometimes we take all of these skills for granted, but the truth is that we are not born with these skills, they must be taught.

Our foundation students also learned that by mixing

primary colours together, we can create secondary

colours such as red and yellow makes orange or blue and

yellow make green.

One very creative way to clearly demonstrate this was

to get them to make hand prints where the two primary

colours used clearly merged to create the secondary colour. I remember creating very

similar pieces of art during my own childhood.

Years 3 and 4 are learning how to plan a piece of art using the sunflowers of

Vincent Van Gogh as their inspiration.

After drawing a picture into their sketchbooks, they were asked to talk about

and plan the watercolour techniques they would use to complete the picture

and then decide what type of detail to add in order to finish.

They were shown brush technique, both

wet and dry, including how to best hold

the brush and how to place it on the

paper for the desired effect.

I am constantly amazed at how quickly children can grasp new concepts and then use them with ease and a skill level beyond their years.

Year 5 and 6 are also experimenting with the use of water colours. Like all the other levels, they must first plan their piece of art by sketching it first into their workbooks. When they are satisfied with the picture they can then move on to experimenting with brush and application techniques for the paint to be used.

Finally, they begin to create their work of art on a separate piece of very special paper designed specifically for the use of watercolours.

Years 5 and 6 were able to choose their own subject matter and although the pieces are

far from finished, they do show a solid understanding of the skills and techniques used

in this form of painting.

As always, I look forward to seeing the finished pieces as so many of them show real

artistic flair and perhaps even the hint of a few budding artists.

YEAR 1 WORK

The Year 1 students have been learning about the traditional forms of

communication used by the Aboriginal people, much of which is focused around

their tradional art forms and the telling of Dreamtime stories.

One story is “How the birds got

their colours” by Pamela Lofts

and Mary Albert.

Here are some of the works of art inspired by “How the birds got their colours”

“Would you like to hear a story from long ago? My mother used to tell me lots of stories, but this story I loved the best because I loved the birds.” Mary Albert

REMEMBRANCE DAY ASSEMBLY

What is the origin of Remembrance Day?

11 November is universally associated with the remembrance of those who have died in the First World War.

At 11 am on 11 November 1918, the guns on the Western Front fell silent after more than four years of continuous warfare.

The 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month attained a special significance in the post-war years and became universally associated with the remembrance of those who had died in the war.

In 1997, Governor-General Sir William Deane issued a proclamation formally declaring 11 November to be Remembrance Day, urging all Australians to observe one minute silence at 11.00am on 11 November each year, to remember those who died or suffered for Australia's cause in all wars and armed conflicts.

The poppy was chosen as the symbol of Remembrance because poppy flowers

grew on the battlefields after the end of the First World War.

A poem widely shared around Remembrance Day, ‘In Flanders Fields’, helped

create the legacy of the poppy as an important symbol of sacrifice and duty.

Slip, Slop, Slap In Term 4, students will need a broad brimmed hat or a legionnaire hat to be outside in the yard for outdoor activities, including sport and play. Australia has some of the highest UV levels in the world. Ensure your child brings a Keysborough Primary School hat to school or leaves a hat in their room to put on for sun protection as part of their daily routine.

Day for Daniel Fundraising Update Thank you to everyone who played a role in making the first-ever Day for Daniel Fun Run a huge success.

Together we were able to raise $4,120.51for the Daniel Morcombe Foundation! Funds will

go to helping the Foundation in achieving its mission of keeping kids safe! Special mention to our highest fundraising student Oliver in 2A. And also to our top three fundraising classes 2A, 1D and 4A. It was fantastic to see so many students and parents enjoying the event and supporting a cause close to our hearts! Thanks again to everyone who supported the students and the Daniel Morcombe Foundation!

2020 Enrolments

Starting school for the very first time is a very special milestone for both child and parent. At Keysborough Primary School we accept enrolments during the year from the beginning of school to the end of the year. For 2020, it is time to enrol your child or children in our school. Very shortly we will begin planning for our 2020 classes and to do this we need to know how many students will be attending our school next year. Children wanting to start Prep must be five years of age (or older) by the 30th of April in the year they start school. If you would like a tour of the school, or need assistance in completing the enrolment form, please contact the office either by phone (9798 4764) or visit in person. This will help to ensure that the correct enrolment form is completed and that the transition for you and your child is as smooth as possible.
