Key Messages From Day 1
The Challenge
• Sense of urgency
• Business as usual will not work
• We have an opportunity, but also a threat
• We need to agree on the problems
• And develop a concrete action plan, with alternatives, a timetable, and costs
Demands for Statistics
• MDGs, PRSPs, IDA• Balance these pressures and pool resources• More clearly articulate international demands• Meet need for disaggregated data• More attention to coordination of systems at
national level• Joint assessment of gaps and master plans• Include users in all stages
The International System
• Agreement on main issues and problem areas• Limited resources to respond• Clarify and improve data “accountability” and
quality assessment e.g. WHO model• Better coordination of international household
survey program e.g. shared household survey inventory
• Opportunities: PARIS21 Task Team; existing UN processes; UN Statistical Commission
Country Capacity
• Take a holistic rather than a sectoral approach • Use Statistical Master Plans• Quick wins: creation of central statistical databases,
“datashops”, better accessibility to datasets• Improve donor coordination at national level• Build culture and capacity to analyze data• Work to household survey sustainability e.g.
continuous surveys, integrated plans• Opportunity: PARIS21 SCB indicators
