Eat properly and take care of your health. As the month of December begins, so begins the cold and flu season. Missing school days and classes due to illness can cause a log-jam of work to complete prior to the end of the semester. Taking care of your health can keep you on the right track. 3. Plan your studying and avoid procrastination. The end of the semester is not for a while but that time will approach quickly. The winter activity season, Christmas activities, and other events can consume our time. Having a plan to complete end of the semester work and prepare for tests will provide the best path to success. Getting work done in a timely manner will allow you to enjoy the Christmas hol- iday season. 4. Students should seek out their teachers for help if they are struggling in class. Students can also take advantage of the Math and Writing Resource Centers. There are many opportunities for students to receive help as they prepare for the end of the semester. 5. Take pride in working to produce your best work, whatever your best work is. Parents can help their child be successful and make it through the final month of the semester. By be- ing supportive and understanding parents can impact their child as they complete tests, papers, and projects. Things parents can do to support their child include: 1. Be positive. Positive encouragement can go a long way to alleviate stress and help your child know they are supported. 2. Have snacks and other items available for study breaks. Providing breakfast and dinner are essential to learning any time during the school year. Supplementing these meals with snacks can provide a good break in studying, helping your child refocus. 3. Have realistic expectations about their academic success, and support the work they put in to be suc- cessful. Placing an emphasis on the work they do for academic success lets them know that they have control over what they achieve. 4. Pray for/with them. Shoes, masks and the stories in and behind them Mike Donahue remembers when he was 5-years-old, watching his dad – his hero, at the time – pack up and leave him and his family. He remembers the trouble he had with his sometimes violent mother. And he also remembers trying to smile publicly, and abuse drugs privately, because he didn’t want anyone to know. He didn’t want to feel … anything. Donahue is the director and founder of Value Up, a nonprofit organization “dedicat-ed to reaching out and enriching the lives of young people,” according to its website, https://value-up.org/. He spoke at a school assembly at Pius X High School on Monday as an event hosted by the Student Ambassa-dors. He invoked God’s mercy into his speech, and often referenced walking in other peo-ple’s shoes to better understand what they might be dealing with. “Everybody in this room has a story, and your story really does matter.” Here are other topics Donahue covered: n Students raised their hand to indicate they would try to help someone who was be-ing physically hurt. But he reminded them that many of them also raised their hands to indicate they know people who get bullied online. He encouraged students to step up in all situations where someone is being hurt. n “You should know by now that this is not just a school. If it was just a school it would

be great because you can just come and learn and go home.” Instead he said, every step we take is being watched, and probably judged, even more so for kids in athletics and activities. “You are not being judged on your whole life because people don’t know your whole life.” n People sometimes wear a smile like a mask: “Behind that mask people are wearing is a broken life, so why would we label them? Why would we judge? Let’s fix it. Let’s find out the reason.” Donahue described a situation where a teen might not live in a loving home, so they seek out ‘love’ somewhere else, even if they know it’s not real. n “If you have to do something to matter to someone, that’s not love. When someone just loves you because you are breathing that’s a great thing. You can blame the per-son that’s using you, and you are probably right, but it’s also because you don’t value yourself enough.” n “If you value and respect yourself, you will automatically attract people who value and respect you.” n “Those that bully online are people who hate themselves.” “You think you are brave getting behind a computer and destroying somebody’s life? You kidding me? That’s not brave. You are better than that.”

n He described how self-medication works by describing a physical wound, like a cut: “Tylenol doesn’t heal the cut, but it makes you forget about the cut.” n Donahue showed a picture on the gym video boards of various phrases from others. One read: ‘I wish words would leave marks, then people would know how I feel.’ n “You’re a family. I know you are a big family but you are a family. You have enough information about each other to be helpful.”

“If you have to do some-thing to matter to someone, that’s not love. When some-one just loves you because you are breathing that’s a great thing. You can blame the person that’s using you, and you are probably right, but it’s also because you don’t value yourself enough.”

Mike Donahue, speaker
