KETTLE KAPERS
The Official Publication of the Kettle Moraine Corvette Club
JULY 2018 Dated, June 3rd, 2018
There was a crash before today's IndyCar race even started. But instead of something like the
crash Roberto Guerrero had on the pace lap at Indy or the start of the first US 500, this crash
was the pace car itself.
The Corvette ZR1 was the pace car for this weekend's Detroit IndyCar Grand Prix. Mark Reuss,
GM's top product development exec and a huge race fan and proponent of motorsports, was
driving the car on the pace laps when it went wrong. This is one of the weirdest things we've seen
at a race in a long time. There was a 27 minute delay to clean up the track.
Reuss appeared to be ok, and the race was restarted after the clean up, but Oriol Servia was driving a different pace car. Here is a link to the video.

THE JUNE KMCC MEETING
We want to extend a sincere “Thank You” again to Jim and Phyllis Schnettler for
hosting the June meeting of the KMCC. The weather was perfect for a turnout of 35+
cars and most of the membership. Here are a few pics of the meeting:

THE 2018 JUNE SPRINTS
This year, June Sprints weekend was extremely HOT. Saturday started out overcast,
but by the middle afternoon, the heat and humidity had set in. The Corvette Corral
had a very good representation of KMCC and Fondy Vette members. Approximately
40 cars were present during the day. Here are a few pics from the day. The first pic
is early before most Corvettes arrived. The second is of an unfortunate GT1 Cutlass
that had an off course excursion.

Here is a recent article that I found of interest:
Storage units are great for all of the stuff you should get rid of but can’t because it’s sentimental, or
all of the stuffy furniture and decor you’ll definitely display once you’re able to afford a mansion
with three living rooms. Storage units are not great for a 2009 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 that’s barely
driven 700 miles. But that’s what someone did, in the heinous act of abandoning a nearly new C6
Corvette Z06 with a manual transmission. It ended up on eBay, where the seller, claiming to be a
car shop in Georgia, said in the listing description that it was found abandoned in a unit.
Yes: A Z06 that’s barely been touched, and which the eBay seller said has never been registered,
wound up in a storage unit. Its 7.0-liter naturally aspirated V8 barely knew what the sun looked like
before being locked away, and all of its supercar potential barely got to see the road. It’s hard to
imagine why someone put it away like this instead of, maybe, selling it? Or driving it? The eBay
description didn’t say how long the car had been in the storage unit, but this model has been
around for about a decade and the Carfax screenshots on the listing say there are no records for
the car since January 2010.

THE MOST EXPENSIVE CAR...SO FAR.
A classic Ferrari has set a new record for the world's most expensive car, changing hands for a reported
$70m recently. The 1963 250 GTO is considered the 'Holy Grail' of collectable Ferraris, owing to its
race-winning pedigree and immaculate condition. The car, with a chassis number 4153 GT, won the
1964 Tour de France motor race, with Ecurie Francorchamp, team mates Lucien Bianchi and Georges
Berger crossing the line ahead of the official factory-backed Scuderia entry. It also competed in
numerous other high-profile road rallies, hill climbs and finished second at Le Mans on its racing debut in
1963. The stunning road racer has often been displayed - and driven - at classic car events such as the
Goodwood Festival of Speed in recent years.
It was reportedly purchased last week by American entrepreneur David Macneil, who has built a
billion-dollar fortune selling car mats and accessories through his company Weathertech. MacNeil is
an avid classic car collector and already owns a number of iconic Ferraris, among others. His son,
Cooper Macneil, will drive a Ferrari at the 2018 24 Hours of Le Mans this month.
Just 39 250 GTO vehicles were built by Ferrari between 1962 and 1964 and are powered by a front-
mounted 3.0-litre V12 engine. The cars dominated sportscar racing at the time, with Ferrari claiming the
World Championship for GT Manufacturers in 1962, 1963 and 1964 thanks to the success of the 250
GTO. Since then, it has become one of the most prized classic cars among wealthy collectors.
According to reports, the last model to change hands back in 2013 sold for more than $60m and experts
predict another will re-set last week's benchmark and eclipse the $100m barrier within the next five
years.

THE ORIGINAL CORVETTE XP-882 MID-ENGINE CONCEPT
In the early 1970s, Duntov knew he had one more chance to sell this mid engine
concept. He also knew he would have to do it with existing parts to keep the tooling
costs down. Duntov found what he needed in the front-wheel drivetrain of the
Oldsmobile Toronado. But rather than placing the V-8 engine in the traditional north-
south position, he turned it sideways, locating the transmission forward of the engine
while locating the differential aft of the engine. To connect the two, he ran a driveshaft
through a tube in the center of the engine’s oil pan. Adding four-wheel drive would
have been a matter of adding a shaft down the center of the car to another differential.
He earned a patent for this arrangement, which was granted in May 1971.
Jerry Palmer and Henry Haga of GM Design Staff designed a sleek silver body for the
resulting machine, known as XP-882. It was low and wide, resembling the stance of a
Ford GT40. The car appeared at the 1970 New York Auto Show, and while it caused a
sensation, it wouldn’t be available with a manual transmission and wouldn’t provide
any significant increase in performance. Consequently, the new prototype would bring
Chevrolet no closer to putting a mid-engine car into production.
