Technology has inßuenced me it has developed me as a person in ways I canÕt describe. I am a varsity cheerleader and I spend a lot of my time doing volunteer work. I wrote the Furthering Technology article and designed our logo.I am interested in graphic design and have enjoyed making this magazine. Thank you for reading!

I have used technology for my entire life and have been amazed every time

that I have used it. This interest has lead me to want to learn how itworks. Thus causing me to discover so many

programming languages and in the end I chose to learn two. The Þrst

one I started toying around in is HTML and later decided to learn Actionscript. This interest is the reason I wrote the article CODE.

I am have always been quite interested in video games, and all parts of their production. I am also quite interested in the trends that games have taken place in recent years, that is what motivated me to write The Future is Here? and show the trends I have recently seen. I am also interested in technology which is why I enjoyed this magazine. Thanks for reading!

THE FUTURE IS HERE..............? Four seperate released and upcoming games, that have been much anticipated and are much waited for, all share the same theme, the future, these games are taking different times in the future as settings. Each of these games have a very different idea of how the future will look, some going far future after a major advance in technology, others merely hint-ing at the future from a slightly more advanced modern perspective. The first game to really start this trend, was Call of Duty Ghosts, released on November 5th 2013. This game is centered around the war between the “Federation” and America. America has launched a weapons system platform codenamed Odin a space station armed with kinetic rods that can cause earthquakes and mass destruction. In the campaign, “Odin” is seized by the federation, and turned against America. However after firing a few shot into America, some astronauts disable odins control systems and send the space station down. After the destruction caused by the initial strike, America and the “Federation” enter into a war that remains at a stalemate for 10 years. The player is thrust into the campaign as Logan, and sent on a normal patrol on the American and federation border, where they team up with a spec ops unit and push into a enemy controlled facility to search for a missing squad member known as “Ajax”. Using a convoy as an explosive distraction, they find Ajax dead.

Logan proceeds to go to Santa Monica to meet up with his father, who is the leader of the spec ops remaining in America. Santa Monica is attacked however and Logan and a crew of spec ops soldiers are sent out to hunt down the man known as Rorke who has been leading the federations spec ops and get airdropped into the federations territory. In this raid, Logan successfully captures Rorke and is in the pro-cess of transporting him back, when Rorke escapes with help from his own aircraft. In the aftermath of this operation, a last resort operation is undertaken, where an arctic oil rig controlled by the federation to dis-

tract the Federation navy. While the federation navy is distracted, Amer-ica starts an operation to take over a space launch site, by using the last operational aircraft carrier in America and its overwhelming power. After a massive battle, America seizes a federation space station codenamed

“Loki”, and uses it to decimate the remaining federation forces.

THE FUTURE IS HERE..............?large federation, and surpassed any other power as the world superpower, and are currently waging a war of conquest that is confounded by guerilla forces better equipped for war, it is a classic match of the better equipped but fewer versus the poorly geared but more numerous group. The Future theme here is a pretty dark as are the majority of the other futures that play out in other games, this game is unique, in that it uses something original as the super weapon, and considering that kinetic rods are an actual weapon this particular future might be the one that is closest to our own. Destiny is the next big future game, being released on September 9th 2014 , focuses on humanity in a state of shock. The setting is after the golden age of humanity,a massive space faring object is all that stands between humanity and annihilation. The player takes the role of a Guard-ian who is trying to return humanity to the golden age, while fighting the aliens who have caused humanities regress to earth. You go around gathering the parts necessary to make a spacecraft and proceed throughout the Galaxy driving the alien invaders out slowly, before killing the three princes that control the alien armies. Once you kill the princes, humanity starts to reclaim the technologies that gave them the advantage. This game’s future is very interesting, as it features more

than one alien race, with the guardian alien being the one saving grace for humanity, preventing total destruction of earth. Meanwhile you face off against a race of aliens that act like a horde, with interesting higher tier enemies, that have special abilities such as throwing fire or using odd projectile based weapons that can cause harm-ful side effects. These special enemies also have interesting names among their own race, such as the mystical Wizard, Acolytes, Oracle, etc. this future is interesting in the way it is presented, with a very religious magic believing race defeating a very technologically superior but less numerous group of humans. Once again, it comes down to a more advanced but less numerous group fighting a larger but worse equipped group. This is an interesting take on the future, that hasn’t really been used. The next truly major game, is Borderlands the Presequel. This game is wildly different from any of the other games mentioned, taking place on the moon Elpis of Pandora. You get to play as one of four characters, who are fighting on the moon of Pandora. In this game you fight for handsome jack against the various bandits who have set up on this moon, and the ferocious wildlife that inhabits it. In this reincarnation of the game, you are helping the corporation Hyperion get its moonbase set up on the moon you are soon faced with

your hyperion contact going insane and going on a quest to defeat him. This game features some very interesting mechanics, such as the need for oxygen that you can get from various sources such as oxygen geysers that occur naturally to oxygen generators which produce oxygen inside of blue fields. This game features you working for the man known as “Hand-some” Jack, head of the company Hyperion. This corporation is interested in this planet for a number of reasons, the biggest, is for the large amounts of Moonstone that can be found on the planet, this futures moonstone is the equivalent of diamonds, being both rare and valuable for its alien like properties and effects. The next biggest resource, are the vaults, which are stores of very valuable material left behind by an advanced race of alien life forms. The hunters of these vaults are typically called vault hunters, you play as one of these hunters searching for these rare vaults and their keys. This games future really isn’t as dark as it seems, with humans widespread throughout the universe and seemingly doing well. However this game, much like the previous two mentioned games, is about a small group of more advanced fighters facing off against hordes of weaker enemies. This game differs in a very interesting way, as it is a majorly satirical and hu-morous shoot em up that focuses on having a “bazillioner” more guns than any other game. This game features a new engine, that will allow it to run significantly smoother on all platforms and

should prove to make a better overall experience. The final game on this list is called Watch Dogs, a game similar to call of duty, it is based in a near future that takes place in Chi-cago where their is a city wide surveillance system call Ctos. You play as a hacker named Aiden pierce looking for revenge after his niece was killed due to him participating in a hack he shouldn’t have seen. You take on a number of roles in this game, such as a getaway driver, a transporter of cars, and finally as a figure known as the “Vigilante” who uses his hacking skills to get into Ctos and predict crimes and prevent them from happening in the first place. In the meantime you strike out against the various gangs that roam the city and cause mayhem wherever they can. This game is all about you getting deeper into the Ctos system and finding the dark secrets behind it and what the plan for it is. Depending on your actions throughout the game people will have different opin-ions of you, if you kill criminals, the people are more likely to call police on you, if you capture and subdue the criminals, people are less likely to call the police on you. This game has two major enemies, the criminals and the police, the difference here is that you can defeat the gangsters but the police are limitless. The only way to beat the police, is to either die or to escape the detection of the police. While on your adven-

-tures, you have the option to help track down multiple different criminals, one set of missions are to hunt down the leaders of the big gang in town, the old Chicago club who have massive influence over the entire city. Another set of missions has you hunting down a serial killer and stopping him. This game has a serious focus on trying to stay stealthy and keeping the public’s favor at the same time as you hunt down the evil forces that plan to use Ctos to basically control the world. This games future seems scarily possible and not to hard to make a truth. The major theme seems to continue as it is one vastly better equipped small force takes on a horde of more poorly equipped thugs. These three big games are the leaders to a second big generation of futuristic games that you may want to get into. With Call of Duty Ghosts, for all of your competitive shooter needs, Borderlands the Presequel for some good laughs and fun super powers, followed up by Watch Dogs for your more dramatic video game, featuring a more real feeling and grittier envi-ronment. Even though they seem to share the same basic theme of being in the future as a small, well equipped force beating a massive horde of poorly equipped fools. You have ranging, interesting options for your futuristic games, This trend seems to be a very common one in many games up-coming and out, focusing on the player acting as a one man army who defeat hordes of enemies.

Speculation SectionQ: What will this mean for games both out and up-coming?A: I believe that games currently in developement and games currently out will start to get more future based content, like Battle-field fours recent future dlc, where they add some futurisitc elements to ap-peal to audiences.

Q: How long do you think this trend will last? A: i think that this trend will continue on for at least the next 6-8 years before we really see the futuristic triple a games drying up a bit, game devs can do whatever they want with futuristic games, but games in the past suffer from con-straints of the time. Q: what do you think the next trend will be?A: Altrenate reality or al-ternate history, as both al-low real freedom for game devs, and could easily hold the appeal of the futurisitc games we see today.

fact that they are a leader in the technology industry and they are not leading a good example for smaller companies. However, Apple falling behind could be a good thing for these smaller companies. Th is gives them the opportunity to pass Apple or at least show that they have the potential to be great corporations. Th e controversies in the technology world motivate compa-nies to impress the crowd.

“Have what ever food you want, whenever you want.” It sounds along the lines of a dream come true. It can’t be real. But wait! It is real. Th is amazing product is called the Foodini. Th e Foodini uses real ingredients and creates real food. An excerpt from the website states in regards to this product states; “Foo

dini helps create savory or sweet cuisine. Th e food is real food, made from

fresh ingredients prepared before printing. Promoting cooking with fresh ingredients, Foodini manages the diffi cult and time-consuming parts of food preparation that oft en discourage people from creating homemade food.” As you are able to see, Foodini is not creating anything out of plastic which is how normal 3D printers create their works. Foodini uses the normal ingredients that you would use cooking at home today. Th is is something that will be very popular in the following years as it makes another thing easier. Tech-nological

Technology has furthered itself spectacularly in the recent history. Th ere have been numerous discover-ies which have further advanced us in order to keep making more great discoveries.Some of the newly released products have sparked quite a controversy. For example, the iPhone 6, many people believe this is not an improvement from the iPhone 5. Many of the most popular breakthroughs are products that many people have dreamt in regards to seeing for a long time. One of these is the 3D food printer called Foodi-ni. Th is is something that is going to become very popu-lar in the following months. Another wonderful invention that has become very popular this past year is that of the Oculus Rift . Th is is an incred-ible headset for 3D gaming. Th ese advances are going to further our society and that is why technology is important.

Let’s dive into the reasoning behind the controversy of the iPhone 6. Many people do not like Apple as a company because of the fact that their products don’t advance much with a new release. For example, the main diff erence between the iPhone 5s and the iPhone 6 is just a height increase of few centimeters and a rounding and thinning of the edges. Th ere was no monumental technology change between these products and this issue has disappointed many committed Apple users. Apple has stirred up some problems in the past with the same issues of very little improvement on the occasion of designing and releasing new material. Th e reason it is important to bring up why Apple isn’t advancing is because of the

thousand pounds. Th at means it is, at the present time, in mass production in order to be sold and delivered to pledgers and to other consumers. Th e Headbones also can be used over the ear. At this point in time, it takes a pledge of fi ft y pounds or more in order to receive a set of Headbones. Th e Headbones are an improvement in technology and they do not cause ear damage. Technology is constantly improving with new operating systems and items releasing everyday. Th is makes it hard for some companies to keep up, but the ones that do, are the ones that are furthering the devel-opment of technology. Development of technology is very important because of the reasoning that it has the ability to improve other fi elds for example, the medical fi eld, in this area, technology is used everyday, it is used in CT scans, xrays, and many other things. Technology actually saves lives and that is very important. Tech-nology is important in the food area too! It is able to be used to sterilize foods and cook them in new interest-ing ways. If there was no technology, there would be no microwaves, no fridges, no stoves, no sinks, no ovens, nothing. Technology helps us to keep our food cold and make it hot. Which is obviously a very important thing. Technology is extremely important in a numerous areas. Th ese advancements in the technology fi eld have created an amazing array of products to choose from. Th ese options make our lives much simpler, more productive, and much healthier. Technology has creat-ed a society dependent on it. In this day and age, you must have an email or a cellphone when trying to get a job or trying to do pretty much anything. Technology is massively important and the companies furthering it today are the ones to praise.

advances in the food industry are very important. Th e Oculus Rift . An amazing work of tech-nology used by many famous gamers. Th e Oculus is a virtual reality 3D headset. It incorporates sound, sight, and motion in order to create an immersive gaming experience. What’s amazing about this item is the sense of control the user has. Instead of using a joystick to look right, you simply look right. Th is product however, is known for its cause of motion sickness issues. Th e Oculus Rift starts out at $350 USD. Since this item is still in development, it is con-stantly changing. If you would like to see some game-play with the oculus you could head to their website (oculus.com.) Th eir website has plenty of good information on this virtual reality gaming set. Th e Oculus was not originally released in 2014. However, it is still developing and is extremely popular in the community. Th erefore, it is relevant. One famous gam-er who has by far the largest fan base of any and is also a frequenter of the oculus would be ,Sweden-born, Felix Kjellberg or, more well known as PewDiePie. He does some amazing work with the Oculus and defi nitely showcases the product very well. Th e Oculus Rift continues to be a strong development in the technology world. “Th ey are Bluetooth enabled bone conduc-tion headphones which sit just in front of the ear, on the temporal bone.” Headphones that aren’t even playing sound into the ear? Th ey are using the vibration of the bones in order to play music. Wow. Another statement found in regards to this product: “Resting on your temporal bone, Damson Head-bones wirelessly transmit audio to your inner ear while keeping your ears clear to hear what is going on around you. Yet also allow you to shut off back-ground noise when you need.” Th is item is called

Headbones. It is a Kickstarter (kick-starter.com for more informa-tion) that has exceeded its goal by over thirty tsand pounds. Th at means it is,

should be a box with options in it that pops up. The name can be whatever you want but it should be written with only letters, numbers, and under-scores. The format I use for my symbols would be to capitalize each word and to not use underscores except in complicated classes (ex. IntroSquare, Square, Player, AngryEnemy or a complicated one like AngryEnemy_3). Once that is done you will want to to make sure that the type is set to movie clip so that we can make it do a variety of things. The last thing you have to do before making this into a symbol is to check the box for “export for actionscript 3” and hit ok and then hit ok again.

First thing to do when starting to make the kind of simple program we will be using would be to make a shape or picture (imported) of any color with the tools on the sidebar (easiest being the rect-angle tool which is the one that looks like a rectan-gle). Once this is made you will want to highlight the entire thing with the selection tool (first tool) and then right click and choose the “convert to symbol” option in the list. Once this is done there

Programmers often have a stereotype of being well acquainted with computers and technol-ogy, but that is not necessarily true. While expe-rience does speed up the learning process, anyone can learn how to write in some of the most basic languages like HTML to some of the more complex like Java and Python. The language I will teach you in this article will be ActionScript 3, which is a part of CS Flash and is made by AdobeTM. This pro-gram is considered more of an object based pro-gram like Java. This means that it is focused mostly on objects, like the name implies. The first thing you will need to do to follow along with this tutorial is get the program which can be easily found on Adobe’s website at www.adobe.com. Once installed you just have to to make a new file and select the Actionscript 3.0 file type which can be saved anywhere on the computer. To do this you just click the “file” button on the top left side of the screen and click “new” within that tab. This will make a new file on your computer that stores all of the data that you made as long as you save before exiting, similar to a text file.

The first thing we will do is write a func-tion. To tell the program that you are writing a function you will have to type “function” in the first line. If this was done correctly function should change color. After the function changed colors press the spacebar and then name the function something that is easy to remember and easy to type. Directly after the name of the function you should have parenthesis facing each other and then a colon like this “functionname():”. after this we have a set of parameters we don’t need to worry about at the moment so we just write void which means that we have no parameters there. After this we should put an open curly bracket so that it opens up the space for the actual commands to be put, this should make a couple more lines of space as well as a closed curly bracket when you press the enter key. At this point in the tutorial your first line should look something like this: “function function-Name():void {“.

Now we can start moving and changing the symbol that was made earlier. First lets start by just changing the x (making it move right or left). To do this you should start by moving the symbol over to the left if you want it to go right and to the right if you want it to go left. Once it is on one of the sides of the stage (the white box on the screen) you should go back into the actions menu so that we can start moving this object around via actionscript. The first thing that we should type is the instance name so that the program knows what we are going to mess with. Directly after the instance name (no space) you will need to put “.x” so that we will change the x property of our instance. Once you have gotten to the point where that is written then we can choose the direction we want the object to go. If you want the object to go right you will want to increase the x and to do that you will need to make a space after the “.x” and then type “+= 1;”. What this will do is continually add one to the x making the object go right at 1 unit per frame and the semicolon is there to end the command. If you want to make your instance of a class go faster you can change the 1 to a higher number. To make your object go left instead of right you will follow the exact same steps except instead of have “+= 1;” you will have “-= 1;”. At this point you should have some code that looks some-what like the picture below.

Once this is done you should have a single object that cannot be separated or changed direct-ly. Next the instance will have to be given a name so that it can be interacted with. To do this you need to click your symbol and in the top click the properties tab and click on the tag that says “<In-stance Name>” and name it something that you can remember and type easily (not the same as the class). Once this is done you can now move on to the actual coding part of the program. To start, you will want to make a new layer by going to the layer area, right clicking and selecting the new layer but-ton as well as name the one with the instance in it and name the one that you will code in (right click the layer and choose rename to change the name). Then right click the box in the timeline and click “actions” on the bottom. Once this is open you will see a blank box with the number 1 on the left.

Now that we have the function complete-ly written you may wonder how we make this function actually start doing something. To do this you will need to go to the timeline which is the wide box at the top of the screen. Once this is open you should go to the Actionscript layer and right click frame 2 which should show a list of options and the one we want would be the “Insert Keyframe” tool. You should now see another box next to the frame we just wrote a function in. If we ran the program now the instance would fl ash on and off half of the time because it is only on frame 1 and the program goes to frame 2. To fi x this problem the only thing you need to do is right click the frame with the instance in it and choose the option to “Insert Frame”. Now you should have two layers with one being a long box with an instance in it and one with 2 small boxes and code in one. Next thing to do would be to right click the second box in the coding layer and choose “Actions”. Once the actions tab is open you will only need to type in one thing and that would be your function. To do this you just type “FunctionName();” which you can also put in the fi rst frame to double the speed. You should now have a working program that you can try out using the Command/Ctrl Enter shortcut.

you will need to do start this step is to disable the current commands you have for moving the instance. Th ere are 3 ways that i know of to do this. Th e fi rst one would be to just take out the function completely by deleting it in frame 1 and deleting the text that calls the function. Th e other way would be to leave the function but delete any of the text that calls the function (ex the “Func-tionName();”). Th e last option which i think is the best one is to just disable the text that has anything to do with that function. To do this you only have to put a “//” before every line involving the function as this will make the program think that it is only a comment meaning it ignores it. Now that that function is out of the way make a new function with a diff erent name. In this func-tion you will only need up to 2 basic commands which will be the “InstanceName.x = mouse.x” and “InstanceName.y = mouse.y”. Last thing is to run the function like we did earlier using frame 2 but this time also put it in frame 1 which will make the program run smoothly. Mouse control gives you a variety of possibilities for many things that mioght want to be done later with more com-plexity, but for now it will be the last thing i will teach.

Now that we got the object to move we can move on to the last thing which is con-trolling the object with a mouse. Th is will be an easy transition aft er learning all of the basics of functions and other things. Th e fi rst thing

EDUCATON’S EVIL APPLE? “Diiinnnnnnggg!” screeches a phone, interupting the teacher in the middle of her sentence. “Put the phone away or I’ll take it!” the teacher warns.Th is occurs regularly in schools everywhere, technology is in-vading the school system. In an attempt to subcome to modern day tools, many schools now give students technology to use in the classrooms. Woodford County High School is one of those schools; they distribute iPads to the kids who attend, and as a student there I have drawn many insights into how technology can be both a tool

and a distraction. iPads act as many diff erent tools in one. With their iPads, students can calculate data, write papers, and manipulate digital models. Be that as it may, the students can also dwindle away instruction time by taking advantage of the distractions- playing games, using non-edu-cational apps, keeping up with the latest drama via social net-works, rather than listening to the instructor. Do these techno-logical terrors detract too much from learning that is vital to the future employment of the kids?

Th e Terror of iPads Teens are inclined to postpone education for the entertainment available on their iPads. Th is damages the integri-ty of the school and is harmful to the post high school educa-tion and jobs. Even when iPads are being manipulated for their tools, students fi nd it diffi cult to avoid games and other distrac-tions, and teachers oft en strug-gle with knowing if students are truly focused on classroom material, leaving them reluctant to take advantage of many of the wonderful features.

EDUCATON’S EVIL APPLE? A students perspective on how iPads can be used in

Many students eat away a great portion of class time being off task with games or other apps that aren’t school related or appropriate in a classroom setting, and it can be very challenging to corral the students back into a learning environment. Th is is evident in Woodford County when some teachers avoid using the iPads because they don’t want students to get off task and not follow the intended lessons properly. Math teachers are a prime example of teachers who don’t take advantage of the tools the

ipad has to off er. One teacher even has a bin called “iPad Jail”, where she puts iPads when she sees them out in class without permission, which is rarely granted. Th e most useful appli-cation available for math classes is the calculators. But teachers then have to ask themselves, “Is it worth the risk of kids using the ipad to play games or look up answers on the internet just to use a calculator app?” espe-cially since there are very few calculator apps comparable to the TI-84 calculators that the majority of math teachers prefer in their classrooms. Most math

teachers answer that question with a quick “No”. Th e struggle with games and non-school related apps in the classroom also apply to science rooms. Many science teachers present lessons from PowerPoints that are distrib-uted to students through apps and websites like Schoology and iLearn, tools that can give assignments to students over the internet. Th ese PowerPoints can be saved to apps like Notability which helps students take and store notes, so that students can keep them and review them

later. Th e fl aw with this is that students can and will download and save the presentations and then switch back to their iPad games and other apps, which is cheating and would end with the student getting a zero, but probably wouldn’t because it would be hard to tell if the student had cheated. Without allowing students to use apps that would let students cheat, teachers try to fi nd digital models of the prin-ciples they are covering in class so that iPads can be used eff ectively, but this is a challenging task. Many teachers have students read articles from accountable sources re-lated to the content, and some English teachers have students read per-sonal reading. However, some students may not even open the articles or books. Another way for iPads to be used in an English classroom is for students to type their work on Goo-gle Drive. If there are multiple days to work, it is easy to shirk off the work and play a game until not long before the assignment is due. Social Studies classrooms and iPads are another arena for the battle

between tools and distractions. In the social studies class that I have been in, the iPads have been used for group activities where students are actively researching. However, many times, it is rather easy for one student to do all of the work while others play games rather than contribute to the group.

It is possible to fi nd ways to prevent students abusing the iPads while at school. Th ere are many apps, websites, and other ways to force iPad use to be educa-

Using the Apple of Knowledge Even though it can be a chal-lenge for teachers to keep the kids on task in a classroom with iPads, there are many tools that make iPads very use-ful in schools. Many apps are available that help kids study. One of these is Notability. Previously mentioned, this is an app that let’s students draw on digital paper for their notes. Th ey can also download Power-points from teachers and store them in the app, along with add-ing notes from class to the presentations. Another app used in the class-rooms is Socrative, which let’s teachers have students participate in activities, usually quizzes for things like vocab-ulary checks. Another is NearPod, an app that let’s teachers give a lecture from a presentation that students can also see and be given comprehensive

tests throughout. Th is app also has stu-dents log in and logs them out if they leave the app, keeping them from play-ing games instead of doing the work. A third is a website called Kahoot, which is mainly used as a review game. In the game students answer questions and earn points to compete with classmates.

Outside of Woodford According to techland.Time.com conducted a study and seem to fi nd that test scores rising when iPads are related. Even though this source found that iPads raise test scores, the eff ectiveness of the iPads on test scores in Woodford County is yet to be seen. Even though test scores rose at the beginning of the iPad experiment, this past year the school dropped

in ranking. Students have always fi gured a way out of class work, but there are still students who do the work. Maybe the iPad can become an apple of knowl-edge, engaging students in their work.

A servey taken in Woodford County High School found that kids spend

around 60.4% of class time in an iPad app not intended for school use.
