STATE-OF-THE-ART TECHNOLOGY AND MATERIALS—AND A HISTORY OF QUALITY

REDUCE, REUSE& RECYCLEAdmittedly, knife manufacturing isn’t on the top of anybody’s list of “ultra-green” industries. Yet our Tualatin, Oregon manufacturing facilities employ strategies that reduce our use of non-recyclable materials, help us efficiently reuse the materials we can, and recycle as much as possible. Naturally, knife manufacturing requires the cutting and grinding of large quantities of steel. Our CNC-machining process, for example, generates piles of metal shavings, which we collect and recycle. In fact, all our scrap metal is collected and either reused or sent to a reliable recycler. To cut down on our use of petroleum products, we collect and reuse both the oil and the coolant our cutting and grinding machines require. Even the metal-laden sludge from the grinding process is separated from the coolant and recycled. And, of course, our manufacturing facilities use fluorescent light bulbs and we recycle both bulbs and batteries.

In the same way that Kershaw is dedicated to state-of-the-art technology in the manufacture of our knives, we are also dedicated to becoming more and more efficient—so we can make a lighter impact on our environment.

Page 3: Kershaw Catalog 10 Combined[1]

Kershaw designers and engineers have been working with powdered steels to produce complex blade geometries that deliver both increased performance and high style. Our newest use of this technology is in our spectacular, award-winning composite-blade series.

Kershaw laser cuts complex interlocking blade components from two different types of steel—

The thin copper line between the two blade steels in a Kershaw composite blade is what joins the two metals. Is copper strong enough to permanently join steel blade components? In a word, yes. In fact, a brazed joint is as strong or stronger than the metals being joined.

COMPLEX BLADE GEOMETRIES, & KERSHAW'S NEW COMPOSITE BLADES

METAL TO METAL: JOININGTHE BLADE COMPONENTS

The virtually indestructible joint between the two metals is achieved by a metallurgical technique called brazing. By annealing the blade to homogenize the grain structure and composition of the copper with that of the two steels being joined, Kershaw is able to produce extremely high-strength brazed joints in our composite blades.

like pieces of a jigsaw puzzle. Then we permanently join them into a single blade.

This enables us to use premium steel designed for edge retention on the blade’s cutting edge and steel designed for strength along the spine. The result is the best of both worlds—a blade that stays sharp where a knife needs to be sharp and stays strong where a knife needs to be strong.

A brazed joint joins the blade components. The joint is as strong or stronger than the metals being joined.

PUTTING THE RIGHT STEELIN THE RIGHT PLACE

Our revolutionary composite-blade technology enables Kershaw to design a blade with no compromises. The cutting edge is super-premium steel that takes and holds a wicked edge. But the spine is built of tougher steel for strength where you want it.

And the color contrast between the two steels is nothing short of spectacular. (See the previous pages for details on how this advanced technology works.)

Speedform — The American-Made Knife of the Year. The new Speedform’s streamlined looks, composite-blade, and CNC-machined handles of 6AL 4V titanium combined to help it take top honors at the 2009 Blade Show.

The Electrifying Volt. Kershaw pairs high-chromium Bohler M390 MICROCLEAN®

with CPM-D2 for decidedly high-end looks and performance. Designed by RJ Martin.

OCC 10th Anniversary Edition. We salute our friends at Orange County Choppers with this composite-blade anniversary edition. CNC-machined G-10 handles in black, of course, complete the look.

Bonus feature: the Speedform’s unique, slim pocket clip is wire-EDM-cut from a billet chunk of

titanium for durability.

Many knife enthusiasts will have heard that 8CR13MoV stainless is the equivalent of AUS8A. And it’s true. For everyday use, even a serious knife enthusiast would be hard-pressed to tell the difference between a well-made 8CR13MoV blade and a well-made AUS8A blade. Yet there are slight differences in the steel formula. While most other components are relatively equal, 8CR13MoV has slightly more carbon for hardness and wear resistance and slightly less nickel.

The key to blade performance for both of these steels is manufacturing quality. That’s where Kershaw’s expertise comes in. Kershaw precision heat-treats 8CR13MoV steel to bring out its best high-performance characteristics—the ability to take and hold an edge, strength, and hardness. 8CR13MoV is top-of-the-line Chinese steel and, we believe, offers our customers an excellent value. Want to know more about steel type and knife performance? See the glossary at the end of the catalog or visit our website FAQ.

A WORD ON 8CR13MOV STAINLESS STEEL

A knife is more than just steel, yet steel is at the core of what makes a knife perform.

Kershaw chooses its blade steels based on a variety of criteria, from ability to hold an edge and corrosion resistance to strength, toughness, and value. Each steel is matched to the function of the knife, the design of the blade, and angle to which it will be sharpened—among other knifemaker’s considerations.

As steel technology continues to evolve, Kershaw will continue to select the very best of these steels to become Kershaw knife blades. Here’s an introduction to some of our newest high-performance steels:

Kershaw worked in partnership with Sandvik Steel, one of the world’s leading manufacturers of stainless steel and special alloys, to produce an exclusive, new high-performance steel: Sandvik 14C28N.

Increased nitrogen in the formula enables 14C28N to provide both excellent corrosion

resistance and the ability to be hardened to 60+ Rockwell. Sandvik calls 14C28N the overall highest performing knife steel in the world that still maintains the productivity benefi t of being fi ne-blankable. See the glossary, page 75, for a defi nition.

Beginning last year, Kershaw upgraded all products previously made with Sandvik 13C26 steel to this higher-performance steel. For a limited period, 14C28N will be available only to Kershaw customers.

ELMAX® and BöHLER M390 MICROCLEAN®

In our composite-blade Speedform and Volt, Kershaw is pioneering the use of these two premium steels as blade steels.

Both are third-generation powdered steels. Incredibly clean, they have virtually no inclusions and offer an extremely uniform distribution of carbide. ELMAX® is a high chromium-vanadium-molybdenum alloyed steel that combines high wear resistance with corrosion resistance. BöHLER M390 MICROCLEAN® is a high performance, corrosion-resistant, martensitic, chromium steel designed for high-precision applications. Both polish beautifully and can be hardened to 60+ on the Rockwell Hardness Scale. They are capable of producing highly complex blade geometries for knives with great strength and hardness, and great style.

Kershaw’s line of Flipper knivesare one-handed, manual opening knives that open as smoothly and easily as our SpeedSafe® knives—but without a torsion bar or other mechanical device to provide the opening assist. Flipper knives rely entirely on their unique design and Kershaw’s precision manufacturing quality to deliver their easy-opening benefi t.

The OD (OverDrive) Flipper. Introduced last year, the OD-1 and OD-2 offer a variation on the original Flipper technology. This amazing, patent-pending technology, designed by Lee Williams, provides the same function as the original Flipper, but with even more grace and style. Instead of a blade protrusion, the OD Flipper has a small lever that is easily accessible when the knife is closed, but—once “fl ipped”—is concealed neatly in the handle.

Ener-G & Ener-G II. From the effi cient design of the blade to the powerful, contoured handle, everything about the Ener-G and Ener-G II is meant to conserve your energy by putting the knife’s energy to work. Designed by Lee Williams, both feature the Flipper ambidextrous manual opening.

This means the manual opening process is fully controllable by the knife user. Flip it fast, fl ip it

slow; either way, it’s one-handed opening that’s easier than ever.

Flipper knives have no torsion baror other mechanical device that provides the opening assist. Yet they still offer smooth-and-easy ambidextrous opening using heavy index-fi nger pressure or a small fl ip of the wrist.

This is only possible because of the extremely tight tolerances to which Kershaw knives are made. No other folding knife feels like a Kershaw. As the blade moves out of the handle, the feeling is smooth as silk. Then the blade locks into position with authority. State-of-the-art manufacturing technology combines with the expertise of our knife artisans to ensure each Kershaw is built with extreme precision for extreme performance—and the smoothest fi t and fi nish in the industry.

Kershaw offers a wide selection of Flipper knives, from the compact Zing to the larger Lahar.

TIGHT TOLERANCES ENSURE FLIPPERS OPEN WITH PRECISION

Flipper knives are among our mostpopular models. And they’ve gained industry recognition, too. For instance, the R.A.M. was recognized as 2007’s Most Innovative American Design. Designed by Grant & Gavin Hawk, the R.A.M.s also feature the patent-pending Hawk Lock for extra security.

How to Flip a Flipper. Hold the Flipper knife in your dominant hand, blade side up. Be sure to keep your fi ngers away from the extremely sharp Kershaw blade. Place your index fi nger on the ridged part of the blade protrusion. Pull back smoothly on the blade protrusion at the same time as you fl ick your wrist forward slightly. The combination of the pullback and the slight fl ip will open the knife and lock the blade into position smoothly, easily, and quickly. Alternatively, you can use heavy index-fi nger pressure and a quick pullback toward the butt of the handle. Either way, Kershaw’s silky operation

and precision fi t and fi nish enable our Flipper knives to open easily.

From big and bold to smooth and sleek, there’s a Flipper for every taste and every budget.

A FLIPPER FOR EVERYKNIFE USER

All R.A.M.s feature the patent-pending Hawk Lock for security and simplicity of operation. Once the blade is open, the Hawk Lock automatically locks it into position. When you’re ready to close the blade, pull the Hawk Lock slider back toward the knife butt and fold the blade in.

SpeedSafe® makes it fast, easy, and safe to open a knife one-handed.

Kershaw’s fi rst SpeedSafe® knife, the Random Task (discontinued).

Hard to believe it’s been 12 years since we fi rst introduced SpeedSafe® assisted opening. The fi rst was the 1510 Random Task, designed by Ken Onion. It was an immediate hit, taking the Blade Show’s American-Made Knife of the Year Award, and selling hot and fast.

SpeedSafe® is a patented system that assists the user to smoothly open any SpeedSafe® knife with a manual push on the blade's thumb-stud or pull back on the blade protrusion. The heart of SpeedSafe® is its torsion bar. Closed, the torsion bar helps keep the knife closed, preventing it from

No. There are many features of SpeedSafe® knives that make them quite different than switchblades. Unlike a switchblade, SpeedSafe® blades DO NOT deploy with the push of a button in the handle or by gravity alone. Instead, the user must manually overcome the torsion bar's resistance—using the thumb stud or protrusion on

Very. SpeedSafe® opens ONLY when the user manually deploys it using either the thumb-stud or blade protrusion. Once deployed, a locking system secures the blade in position so that it

We test our torsion bar to 10,000 openings. However, at some point, the torsion bar may need to be replaced. We will gladly do this at our facility free of charge.

All these years later, SpeedSafe® designs continue to be among our top sellers. Here’s a quick rundown on what you should know about Kershaw’s line of SpeedSafe® knives:

being opened by gravity. In order to open the knife, the user must apply manual pressure to the thumb-stud or blade protrusion to overcome the resistance of the torsion bar. After the blade is out of the handle, the torsion bar moves along its half-moon track and takes over. The blade opens smoothly and locks into position, ready for use.

the blade itself—in order to engage the SpeedSafe® system. Because the user must manually overcome the torsion bar's resistance, SpeedSafe® knives fall fully outside the Federal defi nition of a switchblade. However, due to the complexity and constantly changing nature of knife laws and regulations, it is the responsibility of the buyer to investigate and comply with the laws and regulations that apply in his or her specifi c area.

cannot close accidentally. When releasing the lock, the blade does not snap shut due to resistance provided by the torsion bar. This bar also provides a bias towards the closed position, which holds the blade securely closed.

Kershaw’s SpeedSafe® Chives, Scallions, and Leeks are the everyday carrying knife of choice for knife users across the nation—and across the world. With a wide variety of sizes, fi nishes, handle materials, and colors to choose from, it’s easy to fi nd the SpeedSafe®

pocketknife that’s right for you.

Chives. Since their introduction, members of Kershaw’s Chive family have been winning awards for innovation, value, and quality. Closed, each Chive is less than 3 inches long—ideal for pocket carry. They also offer top-quality materials and top-quality function, including SpeedSafe®

manually assisted opening.

Scallions. The Scallion is ideal for knife users who prefer a slightly larger knife than the Chive—but one that’s still compact, features great styling, and performs like a champ. Its 3 ½-inch folded size makes it an easy pocket carry.

It also offers high-performance styling, plus the convenience of SpeedSafe®

ambidextrous opening.

Leeks. Kershaw’s Leeks offer a distinctive design, the ease of SpeedSafe®, and the largest variety of handle styles, fi nishes, and blade options of any of the knives in this series.

The OCC Leek features the OCC spider-and-web laser cut from stainless steel on top of a basic black anodized aluminum handle. The OCC Blur’s anodized aluminum handle features a raised spider web machined into it.

If you’ve ever had a knife with a coated blade that looked cool when you fi rst got it, but not so hot after just a year of use, you’ll understand why Kershaw chooses the coating technologies it does.

Tungsten DLC CoatingKershaw was one of the fi rst to use Tungsten DLC (Diamond-Like Carbon) coating in production knife applications. DLC coatings display properties similar to those of a natural diamond—notably hardness, wear resistance, and reduced friction. The benefi ts of such a coating is obvious when it comes to knives.

Some blade coatings just amount to a coat of paint. Kershaw uses Tungsten DLC and other PVD coatings for durability and scratch resistance.

The DLC coating is applied in a process called Physical Vapor Deposition (PVD). During PVD, metals are instantly evaporated and ionized via a high-current, low-voltage arc. The metal ions are then accelerated into a vacuum chamber. A negative voltage is introduced, which permanently deposits a thin metal coating on the blades.

A number of different types of metals can be ionized to form the coating. As you might expect, with Tungsten DLC coating, the metal is tungsten, which has the highest tensile strength of any element.

Titanium Carbo-NitrideKershaw also uses titanium carbo-nitride to produce an attractive black blade coating that

increases the blade’s hardness, helps maintain the edge, and increases the overall lifetime of the blade.

Titanium OxideKershaw's special PVD process results in some spectacular “rainbow” fi nishes. The Rainbow Chive, Scallion, and Leek all feature this amazing multicolored fi nish. And like our other PVD coatings, it won’t scratch off.

Anodized AluminumAnodizing is another process Kershaw uses to add durable color our products. Generally, we anodize aluminum handles to create lightweight handles that are still brilliantly colored. Some of our Leeks, our Blurs, and our Mini Biner Tool are all examples of anodized aluminum fi nishes.

Anodizing changes the microscopic texture of the surface so that a porous coating or fi lm can be applied that will in turn accept a dye. Anodizing makes aluminum stronger and anodic fi lms are much longer lasting than other surface colorations.

Tefl on®

Kershaw’s Responders are coated with Tefl on® to reduce friction, making them easier to manipulate in tight, emergency situations.

Black OxideA chemical bath converts the surface of the steel to magnetite. Kershaw uses this coating on some pocket clips, mainly for appearance, though it does add some corrosion resistance.

Responders. These fi xed-blade knives were designed in cooperation with rescue professionals to provide the right combination of features for emergency situations. The Kershaw Responder blade has a blunt, but beveled tip for safe cutting in close quarters, yet without sacrifi cing punching power. The built-in cutting hook zips though cord and webbing. The handle is ribbed for a secure grip—even in gloved hands.

The neon yellow Responder also has a glass-breaker tip at the butt end to break tempered glass with a single blow. Includes a positive-locking, multi-carry-option Kydex® sheath.

Rescue Blurs. For a secure grip in any situation, choose the rescue blur. Kershaw one-handed SpeedSafe® opening and CNC-machines the Blur’s lightweight aluminum handles to accept our textured Trac Tec inserts. They ensure a solid grip, even in wet conditions, even in duty gloves.

EMS professionals—or anyone who has to use a knife in close quarters—will also appreciate the rounded tip of our Rescue Blurs as well as the glass-breaker handle.

Ripcord OTF. The Ripcord’s design is completely unique with a big “wow” factor. It provides the strength and stability of a fi xed blade knife, yet stores as compactly as a folding knife. The handy belt sheath doubles as the patented OTF (“Out the Front”) deployment system.

Built-in Lanyard Whiplash. This bold, military-style fi xed-blade knife has a built-in parachute cord lanyard. Just pull the tab at the butt of the knife to release the elasticized lanyard, wrap it around your wrist, and you’re good to go. For an even more secure grip, the Whiplash features extra-large thumb notches on top of the blade, as well as an oversized index-fi nger notch below. Includes sheath.

Classic Military Knife. Simplicity. Utility. The Military Knife’s fl at-ground blade features a distal taper and a partial false edge on top—in addition to

its Kershaw-sharp business edge. Steel riveted POM scales provide an excellent grip. Multi-carry sheath included.

TACTICAL STYLING, PROFESSIONAL PERFORMANCE

A knob in the sheath engages or disengages the locking function. Simply grasp the handle and pull straight out of the sheath. The blade will deploy in a locked fi xed-blade position. To retract the blade, place the tip into the sheath, place the slot in the handle onto the knob and slide back into the sheath.

The Military Knife’s multi-carry sheath expands the knife’s utility. Quick-release sheath features a slim design for multiple carrying options, including under the coat, on the belt or strapped to a leg or arm.

Kershaw uses a CNC-controlled milling machine to create 3-D surface texture on knife handles.

CNC MACHINING ADDSDIMENSION TO KERSHAWBLADES & HANDLESTake a look at the blade of one of Kershaw’s distinctive Grooves or new Zings and you’ll see a deep grooving on the blade. Examine the titanium handles of our new Volt and you’ll see—and feel—a grip-enhancing, three-dimensional surface texture.

How do we do that? Computer Numerical Controlled (CNC) machining.

CNC machines can be programmed to execute a precise series of machining operations. In our case, these machining operations result in the production of some of the complex components of a Kershaw knife.

Kershaw was one of the pioneers in mainstreaming the production of 3-D machined

knives. We chose to use CNC machines because they give us the fl exibility to create the complex part geometries that some of our knife designs require. CNC also gives us the ability to create just a few pieces for limited-run products or thousands of pieces for knives we produce in higher quantities.

A variety of different types of machines can be CNC-controlled—from milling machines to lasers. We might use a high-powered CNC-controlled laser to cut through some of the advanced steels we use to make a Kershaw blade. We frequently use a CNC-controlled milling machine to cut complex and decorative 3-D surface textures into the handles of specifi c Kershaw models.

As we look to the future, you can look to Kershaw to continue to use the most advanced technologies and techniques—along with the fi nest materials—to bring you knives you’ll be proud to own.

The 3-D grooves in a Groove are the result of Kershaw’s CNC machining process.

Fixed Blade. Fixed blade hunters provide rugged reliability and easy cleaning. The Elk Skinner II with gut hook is an excellent choice. It features contoured and textured handles for a secure grip and premium stainless steel for top performance. It also has a steel lanyard loop.

For great performance in a knife that simply does its job well, choose the Roughneck. A full-tang blade and double-injection-molded handle offers extra strength and superior grip in wet conditions—so it’s the ideal tool for fi eld dressing.

Folding Blade. Hunters who prefer folding hunting knives can rely on our rugged and lightweight Northside Hunters. Both the hunting folder and hunting folder with gut hook feature premium stainless-steel blades for toughness and corrosion resistance.

The curved handle design is incredibly comfortable and must be tried to be fully appreciated.

RELIABLE HUNTERS—FIXED AND FOLDING

All fi xed blade hunting knives come complete with carry/storage sheath. Northside folders also include a sheath.

Bold, brilliant colors make thePure Komachi 2 series a real eye-catcher. But all that fun-loving color has a serious purpose. The color-coding makes it easy to choose the right knife for the job. It also helps guard against cross-contaminating the food—for instance, by using the knife you’ve just used to cut meat on the vegetables. The color on the blade is food-safe and color-matched to the lightweight, contoured handles. Incredibly sharp and decidedly attention-getting, the Pure Komachi 2 line makes a colorful addition to any kitchen.

Camp Ax. Our camp ax is drop-forged in a single piece of steel for reliable durability. Drop forging aligns and stretches the metal’s grain structure for improved strength. For a secure grip, we added a non-slip Krayton® handle and a handy sheath to protect the blade.

Fire Starter. Always strikes a spark, even in damp conditions. A molded plastic handle makes it easy to use and a nylon cord keeps it handy when you need it.

Outcast Bush Knife. Ideal for clearing brush and small chopping tasks. The broad blade is made of D-2 tool steel designed for repetitive chopping and slashing chores. A textured Santoprene® handle ensures a comfortable and secure grip. Includes Kydex® sheath.

Folding Saw. Cuts through bone and wood easily. The blade releases quickly and locks securely with the press of a

button. The Swedish saw steel blade is coated for stain resistance and designed to function on both the push and the pull stroke. When the task is done, the blade folds compactly into a secure-grip Santoprene® handle.

Sportsman’s Shears. In addition to handling a variety of cutting tasks, Kershaw’s multi-purpose Sportsman’s Shears include a nutcracker, a jar opener, bone notch, lid lifter, and screwdriver tips. For easy cleaning, the blades fully separate. Choose them with or without harness-leather sheath.

More tools in less space. That’s the beauty of the Blade Trader concept. Kershaw’s Blade Trader technology provides the convenience of multiple, interchangeable blades and tools, but with a single handle. There’s no need to carry the whole tool, when it’s just the business end you want.

With the Blade Trader’s exclusive Quik-Lock mechanism, you can quickly, easily, and safely trade blades and tools—in seconds. The quality steel used to make each blade or tool is matched to its specifi c application. And like the premium-quality blades themselves, each Blade Trader handle is engineered with attention to function and form. Even after years of constant use, the patented Quik-Lock mechanism will securely hold each blade or tool in place. To make the job more comfortable, the non-slip Blade Trader handle is designed to reduce hand fatigue. All Blade Traders also include a handy storage system.

Inspired by the quick action of a switchblade, a simple push up on the button automatically releases the steel from the handle, while a pull back automatically retracts it. The glass-fi lled nylon handle has soft-touch over-molding for a secure grip.

Another option for keeping your Kershaw sharp is the Ultra-Tek Sharpener. The Ultra-Tek is crafted of lightweight aluminum and coated with fi ne, 600-grit diamond chips. Just a few swipes across the knife blade and your blade can be quickly and easily re-sharpened.

TTool. The TTool is great for changing the position of your pocket clip or occasionally tightening up your knife. It includes a section of Torx® bits, T6 and T8, plus a Phillips head driver, all stored

in the handle. The tip is magnetized, which makes it easier to hold onto those small parts. Includes a removable key chain ring.

420 Modified: highly stain and wear

resistant, but more ductile; excellent for

use where “flex” is desirable, for example,

fish fillet knives.

440C: with heat treatment, attains

excellent strength, hardness, and wear

resistance.

440A & B: almost identical to 440C,

but with slightly lower carbon content,

so hardness is reduced, but corrosion

resistance is enhanced.

AUS6A: high-quality Japanese stainless

steel; provides good wear resistance,

toughness, and the ability to take an edge.

AUS8A: with slightly more carbon than

AUS6A, it offers strength, hardness, and

wear resistance.

AUS-10: high-end Japanese steel that

takes an edge well, while providing

strength, hardness, and wear resistance.

8CR13MoV: top-of-the-line Chinese steel,

heat treated by Kershaw to bring out its

high-performance characteristics—the

ability to take and hold an edge, strength,

and hardness.

ATS-34: high-performance steel that

STEEL TYPE & KNIFE PERFORMANCE

STEEL CHART

Steel is an alloy of iron and carbon. Most

steel also has additional elements alloyed

in it to enhance specifi c characteristics. For

example, stainless steels contain chromium

to enhance stain resistance. Nickel adds

strength and toughness. Here’s a quick guide

to the various elements that can be added to

blade steel and the properties they enhance:

Carbon: improves strength, hardness, wear

resistance, and hardenability; can reduce

ductibility and toughness.

Chromium: improves toughness,

hardenability, wear and corrosion resistance;

promotes hardness during heat treatment.

Cobalt: at elevated temperatures, improves

strength and hardness.

Manganese: improves toughness in high-

strength, low-alloy steels.

Molybdenum: improves hardenability,

wear resistance, toughness, helps during

tempering to ensure steel does not

become brittle.

Nickel: improves strength, toughness,

corrosion resistance, and hardenability.

Nitrogen: improves strength and hardness;

decreases toughness and ductibility.

Phosphorus: improves strength,

hardenability, and corrosion resistance, but

reduces toughness.

Silicon: improves strength, hardness, corrosion

resistance, and electrical conductivity.

Sulphur: improves machinability with

manganese, lowers impact strength

and ductibility.

Vanadium: improves strength, toughness,

abrasion resistance at elevated

temperatures; controls grain growth during

heat treatment.

What’s the best steel? There’s no such

thing as one “best” type of steel for every

type of knife. Instead, think in terms of

the best steel for a particular application.

Kershaw manufactures its knives from a

variety of high-performance steels so we

can match the steel’s characteristics to

the end-use of the knife. Here are some of

the characteristics of the key steels that

Kershaw uses:

D2: “semi-stainless” tool steel known for

excellent wear resistance and good toughness.

420: very stain resistant and tough, but

somewhat “softer;” Kershaw uses this steel

in handle liners rather than blades.

STEEL CHART & GLOSSARY PAGE 77STEEL CHART & GLOSSARY PAGE 77

GLOSSARYAbility to take an edge—some steels just

take a sharper edge than others. Fine-grained

steels take an edge more easily than coarse-

grained ones.

Alloy—a mixture of two or more metals in

solution; the atoms of one replace or occupy

spaces between the atoms of the other so

that the materials are inextricably joined.

Ambidextrous—able to use both left and

right hands with equal ease. In relation to

knives, it means that the knife if usable by

both left and right-handers with equal ease.

Belly—the deeply convex-curved part of

the blade, often found in skinning knives and

multi-tasking knives.

Bolster—the junction between the handle

and the knife blade. A thick bolster can serve

as a safety feature; it also contributes to

knife balance.

Carbide—a hard material made of

compacted carbon and heavy metals used to

make metal-cutting tools. Kershaw uses a

carbide tip as a glass-breaker in some of our

rescue tools.

Carbon fi ber—a strong, lightweight

weave of bonded carbon atoms. Kershaw

occasionally uses it in handle scales; a

premium material.

Choil—the start of the cutting edge.

The choil is unsharpened and can be

decoratively shaped.

Clip-point blade—a blade shape in which

the blade is clipped off at a straight or slightly

curved concave angle to the point. Provides a

thin, aggressive point, yet sheaths easily.

Corrosion resistance—the ability of steel

to resist deterioration through reaction with

elements in its environment.

DLC Coating—Diamond-Like Carbon

coating; a coating that displays properties

similar to those of natural diamond,

including hardness, wear resistance, and

reduced friction. Kershaw uses it to enhance

the performance of knife blades and produce

an attractive fi nish.

Drop forging—a process by which a knife

blade is made by forcing hot steel into a

metal die.

Drop-point blade—a very common blade

style providing a strong, convenient point

and easy sheathing; very common in hunting

blades and work knives.

Edge retention—the ability of a steel to

resist abrasion and wear so that the edge

stays sharper longer.

Ergonomics—the design science of

making products comfortable and effi cient

for human use.

Fine blanking—manufacturing process that

uses high-precision tools to fabricate a knife

blade (or other part) to a shape very near to

its fi nal dimensions. Fine-blanked blades need

little grinding or re-shaping.

Flipper—Unlike SpeedSafe®, there is no

torsion bar. Instead, Flipper opening is kinetic.

Apply fi nger pressure to the Flipper and the

knife opens quickly and easily. Kershaw’s silky

operation and precision fi t and fi nish enable

our Flipper knives to open with ease, even

without a mechanical assist.

Full tang knife—a knife which is built of

one solid piece of blade steel from tip to

butt; scales are usually attached to form

the handle.

G-10—an epoxy-fi lled woven glass fi ber; it is

extremely stable, unaffected by temperature

changes, and can be decoratively tinted,

ground, and polished. G-10 makes excellent

handles and handle scales for knives.

Hardenability—the ability of a steel to be

hardened by heat treatment.

Hardness—like strength, hardness is a

measure of resistance to deformation. The

Rockwell Hardness Scale numbers that you

often see in our specs refer to the relative

hardness of metals determined by the depth

of penetration into the metal by a steel ball or

diamond cone.

Hawk Lock®—patent-pending locking

system that provides incredible security

and simplicity of operation. Once the knife’s

blade is opened, the Hawk-Lock® moves into

place and locks the blade into position. The

blade cannot accidentally fold back into the

handle. To close the knife, the user must pull

the slider back toward the butt of the knife

to release the blade, and then fold the blade

back into the handle.

holds an edge extremely well; fairly tough,

moderately stain resistant.

154CM: almost identical with ATS-34; heat treatment will affect the characteristics of both these steels enormously; Kershaw’s technical expertise brings out the best in these steels.

VG-10: added vanadium makes this steel take and hold an incredible edge; a tough, stain-resistant steel.

ZDP189: premium Japanese powdered steel with incredible hardness and edge-holding ability.

CPM S30V: an all-around premium knife steel that takes and holds an edge extremely well; also extremely tough and wear resistant.

CPM S60V: high-performance steel that offers excellent edge retention, good toughness and stain resistance, and good wear resistance.

CPM S90V: offers incredible wear resistance, excellent toughness and stain resistance; can be difficult to sharpen.

CPM S110V: a tool steel that provides exceptionally good wear and corrosion resistance, plus toughness and hardness.

CPM 3V: a very tough steel with excellent wear resistance and good stain resistance; when it does stain, it may pit rather than surface rust.

Sandvik 13C26: with heat treatment, this high-carbon, chromium steel offers high hardness, good corrosion resistance, and high wear resistance.

Sandvik 14C28N: the overall highest performing knife steel in the world that still maintains the productivity benefit of being fine-blankable. It is exclusive to Kershaw and developed in a partnership between Sandvik and Kershaw. It offers excellent corrosion resistance and hardenability.

ELMAX®: a high chromium-vanadium molybdenum alloyed steel that combines high wear resistance with corrosion resistance; also offers high strength, and hardenability.

BöHLER M390 MICROCLEAN®: a high-performance, corrosion-resistant, martensitic, chromium steel designed for high-precision applications; also offers toughness, wear resistance, and hardenability.

Heat treatment—a controlled heating and

cooling process designed to improve the physical

properties and characteristics of the steel.

Tempering, annealing, and quenching are all

forms of heat treatment.

Impact resistance—the ability of a material to

resist cracking or breaking due to sudden impact.

Inclusions—non-metallic particles that can

either form naturally during the steel-making

process or can accidentally get into steel.

These inclusions can affect the steel’s quality;

the fewer the inclusions, the cleaner and higher

quality the steel.

Lanyard hole—a hole in the butt end of the

knife to enable to user to attach a cord or lanyard.

Left/right-hand carry pocketclip—the knife

handles on some models are drilled for both left

and right hand clip carry allowing the clip to be

mounted on either side of the handle and thus

ideal for both left- and right-handed knife users.

Lockback—a pivoted latch connected to a

spring and positioned on the back of a knife

handle. It locks the blade open. To close the knife,

depress the latch to release the blade.

Locking liner—on a folding knife, the liners

are the fl at plates that support the handle sides,

bolsters, spine, and blade pivot. In a locking liner,

as the blade is opened, one of the liners moves

behind the blade to hold it in the open position.

This prevents the knife from accidentally closing.

To close the knife, the locking liner must be

pushed to the side and the blade folded back into

the handle.

POM—Polyoxymethylene-Delrin® (POM) is a

rigid, high-strength engineering plastic. It is often

used in food applications as it offers extremely

low moisture absorption, high-impact resistance,

and is very easy to clean.

Recurve blade—a blade with a concave

curve off the choil that fl ows into a deep belly. A

recurve blade is built for multi-tasking, offering

minimal mass, and maximum performance. It

provides leverage for tough cutting tasks and a

precisely centered point for piercing.

Rockwell Hardness Scale—a measurement

of the hardness of a material based on the depth

of penetration of a diamond cone pressed into

the material at a constant pressure.

Safety Tip-Lock—a small slider that locks

the tip of the blade in the handle until the user

releases it. It is available on a number of our

SpeedSafe® models.

Serration—a serrated blade puts many small

sharp points in contact with the material being

cut. Because there is less surface area in contact

with the material than with a standard smooth

blade, each point has greater applied force

behind it. Points of contact are generally at a

sharper angle to the material being cut as well.

Serrations are useful for sawing through cutting

tough materials such as rope, webbing, canvas,

or fi brous plants.

Scalloped Serration—is an even pattern of

“half-moons” cut into the edge of the blade.

Kershaw’s two-step serration—has one

large and two smaller serrations, which

provides additional cutting power, but must be

used in combination with a very hard steel to

maintain the cutting points.

Many styles of Kershaw knives are available

with partial serration. Just the back portion

of the blade is serrated. This offers the best

of both worlds—a smooth edge for clean,

precision cuts and a toothed edge for sawing

through tougher materials.

Scales—the pieces of material that are fi tted

to the tang of a full-tang knife or to the liners

of a folding knife. There are a wide variety of

handle materials available from natural, such as

wood and bone, to manmade, such as G-10.

Sheepsfoot/Warnecliffe blade—a blade

with a fairly straight cutting edge with the

spine rounded down to meet the point. It is

a very strong design for bearing down on a

cutting chore.

Spearpoint blade—a blade that is

sharpened on both top and bottom, generally

used as weapons.

SpeedSafe®—Kershaw’s patented manual

assisted-opening system; the user starts the

blade out of the handle, then the SpeedSafe®

torsion bar takes over to fully open the knife.

Stain resistance—the “stainless” in stainless

steel; this is its ability to withstand rust.

Strength—is the ability to take a load without

permanently deforming. When it comes to steel,

strength is directly related to hardness. The

harder the steel, the stronger it is.

Tanto/modifi ed tanto blade—a blade with

two edges, the bottom cutting edge and a

shorter edge angled from the point. Good for

punching and multi-purpose use. Knifemakers

modify the tanto blade in numerous ways for

both style and function.

Tempering—slow, steady heating of steel,

followed by a slow cooling phase; this heating

and cooling helps relieve stress in the steel to

strengthen it.

Tensile strength—the ability of a steel to

resist breakage by stretching.

Tip-up/Tip-down carry—this refers to the

position in which a folding pocketknife is carried

when clipped to the pocket: with the closed

tip pointing up or down. Many Kershaw knives

offer the ability to reverse the clip for either

method of carry.

Titanium—a lightweight, corrosion-resistant

metal with high tensile strength. Often used

as handle materials, for liners, or as a blade

coating, where it enhances performance.

Toughness—the ability of the steel to

withstand shock loading without damage;

the opposite of brittleness. In a blade, higher

toughness means less chipping or cracking.

Toughness can be lost in very hard steel,

although heat treatment can be used to improve

toughness in a hard steel.

Wear resistance—the ability of the steel to

withstand abrasion.
