TEARING THE WORLD APART ONE COUNTRY AT A TIME!

Our Chief Editor Jake Josling sits down with up and coming metal band “Mechanized Patriot” and asks them your questions on what it’s like being the new comers to such a developed genre.

Jake: Ok, I’m here with Mechanized Patriot, tell us a bit about yourselves and your past guys.

Ciaran: Hi, I’m Ciaran and I’m the lead singer of the band. Erm, I grew up in London where I got a lot of inspira-tion from my surroundings because I lived in quite a developed area of London where my father worked in a factory.

Chris: Erm, I’m Chris and I am the lead guitarist of the band.

Luke: Don’t you have to say more than that Chris? (Laughs)

Chris: OH! (Laughs) I’m sorry, Erm, Ah, I live in Greater London and I grew up in the country on my dad’s

farm. I met Ciaran through a fan forum for an old band I like.

Luke: That’s better (Laughs). I’m Luke and I’m the drummer for the band. I grew up near Ciaran and I remem-

ber him in school but we never really spoke until he found out that I played the drums and then we formed our first band type thing. It never really worked until we got Chris on board and changed our name to Mecha-

nized Patriot.

Jake: Speaking of the name, Mecha-nized Patriot, how did you come up with that?

Ciaran: That was actually our friend’s idea.

Chris: Yeah, there was this old video game that featured an enemy called the Mechanized Patriot and he spoke about it quite a lot and then we sort of made the connection and thought it’d be a good name.

Jake: Your first album is coming out next month; do you want to just give us some information about it?

Luke: This album is just all of our demo stuff and some of our new tracks thrown in. We’ve been work-ing on it for about 6 months.

Chris: This album is called Rustic Ruins, because we thought it was a cool name. It doesn’t really have any significance to anything but we just liked it so we used it.

Jake: Have you got plans for a tour?

Ciaran: This is a bit of a tough ques-tion really. We haven’t really got any plans for our own tour but we are tagging along on a few other peoples tours (Laughs)

Chris: We are opening for Parkway drive in January which came as a big surprise because we’re all such huge fans of theirs and we got a letter through the post one day when we were at the studio recording some of the tracks for Rustic Ruins and when our manager opened it and told us we would be opening for Parkway on their tour our mouths just hit the floor.

Ciaran: We’re also touring for a bit with Cancer Bats because one day I was in a café and Liam (The lead singer of Cancer Bats) walked in and we got talking and one thing lead to another and I mentioned our band

"THIS BAND IS PRETTY MUCH MADE OF BROKEN DREAMS"

Download 2013. How did these three guys from London make it, Jake Josling finds out.

and he said “Hey, why don’t you come on tour with us? Our opening act dropped out and we’re looking for someone else to take their place and I jumped at the opportunity! (laughs) not literally of course but I was really excited to get on the phone with Chris and Luke and give them the good news.

Luke: We’re also playing on the main stage at the Download Festival in June. This will give us a lot of recogni-tion because we’re on just before Bullet For My Valentine who are the second headlin-ers meaning quite a few people will be there getting places for Slipknot.

Jake: Download, huh? How’d you land that gig?

Ciaran: It’s actually not too weird of a story... One day we applied for the up and coming stage for down-load and we’ve pretty much spent the last 2 or so years working our way up. We were on the second stage last year and this year we got asked onto the main stage. Jake: So, Ciaran, This isn’t the first band that you’ve been in that’s made it to number one on the iTunes Metal Charts is it?

Ciaran: It actually wasn’t, this band is pretty much made from broken dreams. I mean that all of the past bands we’ve been in have all dreamt of getting to the top and after about 6 or 7 bands we were almost ready to quit but when I realised that Luke and Chris were in my situation too I thought: “Why not give it one last shot, one last chance”

Jake: What did your parents think of the band? Were they supportive?

Ciaran: My Dad was a very hard working man who’d worked in a factory since he was 15. He never wanted that life he had for me. He used to tell me: “Ciaran, One

day you’ll be famous, on TV. You’re not made for the

factory. You’re made for better things”

Luke: My parents were never very supportive of my music career. This is because my dad wanted me to be a doctor. My mother shared this opinion but kept it to herself more than my father did. Dad always pushed me to do more school work and take up new classes and things like that. When he came

back from work one day on my birth-day he was horrified to find that my mum had bought me a drum kit.

Chris: My mum never really had much faith in me. From day one she expected me to follow in my 4 older brothers’ footsteps and work on the farm. She often tried to lower my expectations because she didn’t want me to get upset when things

didn’t work out. I will always re-member one thing she always used to say to me: “Christo-pher, you have the brains of a rocking horse, you could probably drink milk and die trying”

Jake: You’re often compared to the likes of Iron Maiden, did you draw any inspiration from them or was it just a coincidence?

Ciaran: As a kid I did listen to a lot of Iron Maiden so I guess you could say that I draw a bit of

inspiration from them. When I’m writing songs I tend to listen to music without lyrics though.

Chris: I don’t usually listen to them but they are good at times, it re-ally depends on what mood I’m in and what I’m doing. I can see how people would associate our music with theirs. There are definitely

some similarities but I don’t believe we intentionally made our style like theirs it just happened.

Jake: Seeing as this is your second tour and you’re most likely used to life on the road, what do you think you’ll do differently now

that you’ve got some experi-ence?

Luke: I think we played it a bit too safe last year. We didn’t drink or smoke. I remember I didn’t even eat takeaway food. Chris would come in every other day with a bucket of fried chicken or a delicious looking pizza and I thought that by having it every day it’d make me too sick to play, but Chris managed it so I think this time I will definitely be being a

Ah The Forum, want can I say? I love this venue! Espe-cially when a band like Mech-anised Patriot is running the show. They alsmot literally brought the house down. They kept the audience in-volved constantly and never forgot where they were, by that I mean that they kept the audience going and at one point lead singer Ciaran Davis even crowd surfed to the delight of the audience.

The opening band was Ciaran Davis’ former band Voodoo for Kids. They were good, they played songs off of their new EP as well as some covers of Me-

tallica and Slipknot songs. Once Voodoo for Kids wrapped things up, Slip Kreed came on and warmed the audience for Mechanised Patriot. Slip Kreed, now at the tail end of a brilliant ca-reer now trying to give a leg

up to the new guys. Overall I think this was a 10 out of 10 gig, great crowd , great music, and a great price. If you can the you should definatley check

these guys out.

little more adventurous with my food and drink.

Ciaran: We saw what most of the other bands were doing, for a brief while when we were touring we came across the likes of Slipknot and Metallica and we saw how they handled their touring and I think this time we will take a leaf out of their books and have as much fun as pos-sible.

Chris: We’re going to do everything right this time.

Jake: What’s the worst gig experi-ence you’ve ever had? Not just on stage, maybe on the bus or in the hotel.

Ciaran: Hmmm, that’s tough… I do remember one experience that was unpleasant. It wasn’t with Mecha-nised Patriot but it was back when I was with Voodoo For Kids. Is that ok? Anyway, we were up in Vancou-ver and it was raining so so much, it was pissing it down and you couldn’t escape it anywhere. But thankfully as we came on, it stopped. We were soaked; the crowd were soaked, and grumpy. But we carried on… about half way through our third song this breeze came along and chilled us to our bones. It was the coldest gig I’ve ever played.

Chris: Back when I was a session mu-sician I had the misfortune of touring with Madonna. She was a complete and utter diva and made the entire crew and the entire band sick to death of being with her. So one day as I was playing my guitar came loss from its strap and fell on the ground. Madonna saw this and mistook it for me throwing the guitar down and not only sent me away but she had security escort me from the festi-val… this would have been fine if we were in England! But no, we were in Germany… so I ended up getting lost in Germany until my dad came and found me and took me home.

Luke: This fan once ran on stage and drop kicked my drum kit as I was

playing. It was rather terrifying and Ciaran and Chris swung round just in time to witness the dude go straight into the drums. Unfortunately that meant that we had to come off because by the time the drum tech got the kit back up and running our allotted space was over.

Jake: Who are your music idols? Who in the industry, alive or dead influ-enced you the most over the course of your music career?

Ciaran: Well, that’s a tough one. I listened to a lot of Marilyn Manson and I just loved the way his songs made me feel, I told myself once that I need to get my music to make people feel like that, I need to give people the same emotions that Marilyn Manson has given me over the years. So definatley him, Rob Zombie was another one who influ-enced me quite a bit. Especially as I went through my goth rock phase in middle school.

Luke: I like to listen to Corey Taylor a lot, Stone Sour, Slipknot... mainly just because he is awesome! I also feel that he is a pretty fantastic singer and songwriter. I also think that his vocal range is really diverse. He can cut between screaming and singing so quickly and smoothly.

Chris: I would have to agree with Luke, Corey Taylor is a good one. An-other one of my idols would be Jim Root. I use his Fender Strat for most of our gigs. It was the guitar I learned to play on and I’ve just been buying them ever since.

Machnised Patriot’s new album “Rustic Ruins”is out next month.
