The Nuui Cunni Native American Intertribal Cultural Center is a non-profit organization 501(C)3. Sponsored by the Kern River Paiute Council,Nuui Cunni Cultural Center operates under a special-use permit from the USDA, National Forest Service on a non-discriminatory basis.

The Kern River Paiute Council has entered into a partnership and been authorized to manage the “Nuui Cunni” Native American Intertribal Cultural Center as an established facility to curate and display Native American artifacts, crafts and art, to promote and restore the culture and history of our local Indian Communities as well as recognize and respect all

wishing to exercise their educational programs and spiritual ceremonies. The 3,150 square foot special designated building houses a museum, library, gift

shop, meeting place and operates as a visitors center. The 5.6 acre grounds features native plant exhibits,

artifacts, dance arbor, tule hut, lamada, sweat lodge, prayer garden and area for large activities.

Some ‘round these here parts sure were glad to see the Dam Corner open its doors again. That sly Steve Spradlin has been super busy, splittin’ his time ‘tween his True Value hardware stores in Isabella and Mountain Mesa and somehow findin’ the time to get to fixin’ up the ol’ place real nice. Now that it’s all done, and the Corner’s open for breakfast and lunch from daybreak to three daily, he’s called on his kin Shawna Spradlin to run the joint in his stead. But see, there’s a whole big beautiful side of that place that’s just sittin’ all empty and a slew a’ folks’re on pins and needles wonderin’ what in the heck it’s gonna be used fer?

Wonder no more, because we’re here to tell ya, ol’ Spradlin’s got a Jim Dandy of a plan. He’s modeled up that place to be a right fine supper house, and he’s aimin’

to call it, “Dick Weed’s Pub N Grub.” You heard it here first, folks, Spradlin’s got the insides all wood and metal and miner-like, and he thought it right “fittin’” in honorin’ one of this Valley’s most unusual inhabitants, Dick Weed, the miner. And just as soon as he gets a few good Cookies to helm that chuckwagon, he’ll be ready to roll it out, you just watch.

So there’s one mystery solved. But when we found out that Spradlin was figurin’ to call his new supper house, “Dick Weed’s Pub N Grub,” we were just plain stumped. Just who in the heck is this Dick Weed? It’s a moniker that brings whole mess o’ images to mind, ‘n’ some of ‘em right vul-gar. So we got out quick to askin’ folk. Spradlin’ remembered that ol’ rascal Richard “Dick” Weed from back when he used to do some tradin’ with him at the main market in town. “He was quite the colorful character.” Roberta

Piazza Gordon of Piazza’s Pine Cone Inn in Kernville remembers Weed from her childhood as “the man who I always found sleeping in the Kernville Post Office,” but also a veteran who proudly marched in every durn parade in his ol’ WWI uniform. And to hear Chuck Barbee tell it, sure, Weed would come down into town wanderin’ around in various states of undress, but “he was one of the best musicians around these parts.” Barbee used to hike up to Weed’s cabin, made durn sure he announced himself loudly, so Weed wouldn’t pull his trusty .44 pistol an’ shoot ‘im for trespassin’ mind you, and spent endless hours playin’ g’itar on Weed’s porch.

Colorful Character? Oddball Bohemian? Stalwart Veteran? Gifted Musician? Cantankerous Codger? Well, we were plumb confounded. So we tracked down Dianna Anderson, curator at the Kern Valley Museum over in Kernville, and she filled us in a little. She pulled out that ol’ Bob Powers book, “North Fork Country” and shared a ditty about that ol’ coot, Dick Weed.

Sure ‘nough, back in the day, Weed joined the Calvary and fought in the Mexican Ameri-can War. Shortly thereafter, he enlisted in the United States Navy to fight on the side of right in the submarine service in World War I. After he was discharged, Weed returned to his Riverside, Califor-nia home, but it wasn’t suitin’ him. Nope, he longed for the mountains and the rivers of mining country, so he hitched up and moved to Kern River Valley, where he filed a claim and built himself a cabin with his own bare hands by the river up there in Fairview, just north of Kernville.

When the United States got into WWII, Weed tried to enlist to do his part as a patriot, but he was

just a might too long in the tooth, and so, he returned to his cabin on the river, where he kept pesky flat-landers away with signs promisin’ “Keep Out Or I’ll Shoot.” That mine never did quite pan out, so he stretched every single penny from his small soldier pension by writin’ checks for anything from 50 cents to a dollar of the local James Store for supplies. And when he made these rare trips into town to eat and stock up, he often slept in the Kernville Post Office “because it was warm on the floor” and that kindly postmaster didn’t think Weed was hurtin’ nothin’. He dusted off his WWI uniform and marched with fire and spirit in every parade, and went to every gulldurn veteran event the Valley had.

But Weed was also rightly known for his singular talent with musical instruments of all kinds, and he’d share his love o’ music with anyone who’d care to listen. When he did venture into town, whether or not he was rightly dressed, he’d be sure to be carryin’ two things with ‘im: his Colt .44 and a g’itar. Sometimes his juice harp, too. And he’s mighty famous for teachin’ Don Davis, the famous “One-Man Band” the banjo, harmonica, piano, drums, cymbals, glockenspiel and a slew of others, makin’ Davis’s career in music ‘n’ TV possible. In fact, Don wrote a song about ‘is ol’ pal, called “Dick Weed The Miner.” Feel free to take a gander at the Museum next time you’re down Kernville way, perhaps pick up a copy of one o’ Bob Powers books and learn more about all the “col-orful characters” that’ve led rich, unique lives in and around this here Kern River Valley.
