I’ve noticedthere are a lot ofstrange labels andinstructions thatwe see, read andhear on productswe buy or thatcompanies wantus to buy.

It seems thatsome labels arewritten by littlemen wearing visors and sleevegarters in candlelight behind acurtain.

For instance, because of truth inadvertising, most drug companies-- after they tell you all of the goodpoints about a product -- tell youthe bad and why you shouldbeware. Often, telling you aboutthe bad things takes longer thanthe good, as it warns you aboutthe grim and horrible reactionsthat could happen when you ingesttheir product.

I’ve also noticed that manyproduct labels we see from day today are odd and strangely written.

So I cruised our pantry and theinternet to find some examples. These are real and only a sampleof what’s out there.

• On a small jar of floating fishbait, it says, “Not for human con-sumption.”

• On a bottle of window cleaner,it says, “Don’t spray in eyes.”

• A deoderant soap wrapperdeclares, “Use like regular soap.”

KRVR, Living Green “doing hell of a job”A little note to Joe Ciriello, President of KRVR - Kern River Valley Revitalization.

Hey Joe. You're a long time local business guy and as president of Kern River ValleyRevitalization, further known as KRVR, you and your group are doing a hell of a jobwith your Living Green program. The weather hasn't quite cooperated, but again itswinter.

A little concern to me, as a local celebrity in the Kern River Valley, is your Pony-Up4 education dinner advertisement. It says catered by Hodel's Country Living. Rightbelow that is a big logo, "Think Local First." Hopefully that Hodel's Country Living isHodel's of Bodfish.A local first,

PICKS OF THE WEEK“War Horse” (PG-13) — This

latest offering from StevenSpielberg has all of the visualsplendor and classic-style senti-mentality expected from the vet-eran film maker. It starts with anEnglish farm boy named Albert(Jeremy Irvine) being tasked withraising and training a colt racingstallion called Joey. When the twoare separated by World War I, thehorse braves an odyssey throughravaged Europe, making animpact in the lives of humanswherever he goes.

The bulk of the story stays withthe horse. While the majesticcreature makes its way throughthe horrors of war, everything hasthat classic-movie sheen to it.While we’re supposed to feel forthe horse, it seems like the moun-tains of human suffering arebeing glossed over.

“We Bought a Zoo” (PG) —Sometimes, you just have to takea big, crazy leap and give it yourall. That seems to be the syrupymessage at the heart of thisbased-on-a-true story. Benjamin(Matt Damon) is a let-go newspa-per reporter who recently lost hiswife. While looking for a newhome where he can take hisyoung daughter and teen son, hefinds a run-down country estatethat also happens to be a run-down zoo in need of new, dedicat-ed owners.

Matt Damon, ScarlettJohansson and Colin Ford all por-tray characters more groundedthan their script. This story of awild risk that paid off for onetroubled family can be a joyfulexperience, just make sure anychildren watching don’t get theirhopes up.

“London River” — In theaftermath of the LondonUnderground bombings in 2005,two people cross paths while sort-ing through the terror and thetragedy. Elisabeth is a whiteChristian woman searching forher daughter. After putting upposters, she comes in contactwith Ousmane, a black Muslimman from France who found aphotograph of his son with herdaughter. The two try to use eachother to get to the bottom of whathappened. The story and the per-formances make the film worth-while, even if the message canseem a bit blunt.

Here are somedos and don'tsthat might helpyour Derby expe-rience. Do makesure that you areproperly regis-tered prior to themorning of theopening. Do fol-low all of theDerby regula-tions. Do follow all of the Californiafishing regulations. Do follow theForest Service regulations, and lastbut not least, do follow the regula-tions of the Lake Patrol. That coversthe Derby, the state, the feds, andthe county: That's a big to do list.

Well, I have a few of my own dosand don'ts. These are merely sug-gestions and are my thoughts only.First, don't let your dog use yourneighbor's property to mark its ter-ritory. Next, don't let your childrengo unsupervised because there aredangers around the lake shore. Also, don't play your music louderthan is necessary; being able to hearit in your camp area only is perfect.Don't leave unattended fishing gearcast in the lake for long periods oftime, reel them up and leave them inthe holders to save your spot, unat-tended lines could cause someone tolose a tagged fish in a tangle of lines.Don't park your vehicle in a way thatwould prevent someone's ability toaccess their vehicle because emer-

gencies do occur. Don't get intoxi-cated, it may change your attitude,or worse, it could get you arrested.Don't leave any trash lying aroundyour camp as the wind will move it,and when you are packing to leaveplease take all your trash to a dump-ster (they will be provided for thispurpose) or take it home, your effortwill be greatly appreciated. Theseare my dos': do have a great timeand I do wish everyone good luckand do have a safe drive home.

The bass bite is on the up- swing; The "Fishing Father" caught andreleased successfully another bass inthe 8 pound class that's 2 in a week, nice catching James. Due to theinclement weather no other report isavailable.

Dear Dave,Is there

some way toput a block ona credit reportprior to send-ing a kid tocollege, so thatthe credit cardhustlers can'tget to them?

-- Trevor

Dear Trevor,No, there’s not. Unfortunately,

in today’s culture that’s part ofbecoming an adult. When youhand them car keys there’s noway to put a block on how theydrive. And when they turn 21,there’s no way to put a block onwhat they ingest.

About the only thing you cando is to teach your kids, to thebest of your ability, and be agood parent and good example.Teach them why debt is dumb, and show them how it eats awayat their ability to save money andbuild wealth.

And for goodness sake, don’tuse credit cards yourself. Kidscan smell a hypocrite a mileaway! --Dave

Dear Dave,I’m a new doctor, and I drive

a car that has more than200,000 miles on it, is 10 yearsold and a few dings in the

doors. I’ve heard image iseverything when you’re a doc-tor, but I like not having a carpayment. Should I just getover being self-consciousabout my old car? -- Mario

Dear Mario,I like not having a car note,

too. I’d walk, ride a bike or driveyour car with a great big smileon your face before picking up acar payment!

As new, young doctor you’veprobably got six figures in stu-dent loans hanging over yourhead right now. So you need toget out from under all thatbefore you start thinking aboutdriving something fancy. If thiscar is truly on its last legs, thenI’d say save up for a few monthsthen upgrade to a good, reason-ably-priced, used car.

Just remember, a Mercedes orBMW doesn’t prove you’re adoctor, and it doesn’t meanyou’re a good doctor, either. Youjust need to worry about what’ssmart for you instead of whatother people think! --Dave

“Now in the first yearof Cyrus, king of Persia,in order to fulfill the wordof the Lord by the mouthof Jeremiah, the Lordstirred up the spirit ofCyrus king of Persia...”

-- Ezra 1:1

There are many moving parts inthe Kingdom of God unfolding aswe live our lives, not the least ofwhich is the place that timingholds.

I tend to doubt the adage thatsays “timing is everything,” butonly because absolutes are rarelycorrect, and to say anything iseverything is probably not so.

Critical to the above openingverse of Ezra is the prophetic wordof Jeremiah the prophet which pro-claimed that 70 years of captivitywould be fulfilled before a return toPalestine would be brought about(Jeremiah 29:10).

What Ezra and the returningJews experienced at their momentin time was a move of God thatjoined their lives together in a cor-porate task, even while the Spirit ofGod continued to work in them asindividuals. The duality betweenindividual and congregational ismagnificent if we are willing tocome to peace with it, and madden-ing as all get out if we attempt to

Timingfight it. This is where “peace thatpasses understanding” finds itsroots, for while our moment in timemay literally be when all hell isbreaking loose in terms of humanevents, you and I can continue totread the path of the righteous inour personal experience.

Alternately, our moment in timemay be when a glorious move ofGod is encompassing the Church, while we may be experiencingsomething less glorious personally.

How are we to know exactly whatkinds of times we are living in?Simply put, retrospect will help inthe understanding of where we havebeen, and faith and hope will moveus through the present and future.Ezra and his counterparts knew theyhad been invited to spend their livesin the pursuit of something largerthan themselves in the rebuilding ofthe Jerusalem temple, and their per-sonal response was to embrace suchan opportunity.

Some 70,000 individuals took upthis journey and became part of aremarkable move of God at thatmoment in time. The work of theSpirit in each of them personallywas interwoven with what Godwas doing in His kingdom collec-tively. We can rejoice as each daybrings a fresh sense of the Lord’smercies in our personal experience, and we can shout hallelujah to Himwho sits on the throne of humanaffairs over which He is in perfectcontrol. In the Father’s timing letus rest, in the Father’s power let ushope and for the Father’s purposelet us continually contend in faith.
