History of Kerala

● The Chera Dynasty was the first prominent

kingdom based in Kerala.

● It is the home to Mysore dynasty ruled by Hyder

Ali and Tipu Sultan who fought four decisive

battles (Anglo – British Wars) with British

● Travancore State ( Old name of Kerala) was

formed on 1 July 1949 which was later renamed

as Kerala.

● Under the States Reorganization Act of 1956,

Travancore, Cochin and Malabar states were

united to form the state of Kerala on 1 Nov 1956.

Geography

● Geographically Kerala is divided into three major

tourist regions- 1. Malabar (Northern Kerala), 2.

Kochi (Central Kerala), and 3. Travancore

(Southern Kerala).

● Kerala experiences humid tropical rainforest

climate with some cyclones.

● The state has a coast of 590 km.

● Anamudi in the Idukki district is the highest peak in

south India, is at an elevation of 2,695 m (8,842 ft).

● Kerala has 44 rivers out of which 41 flows

westwards while remaining 3 flows to east. Periyar,

Pamba, Pamba, Chaliyar, Kalada, Muvatupuzha etc

flows westwards while Pambar, Bhawani and

Kabani flow to east.

पसिम क़ी ओर बहते हैं जबसक पंबर, भवानी और

काबानी पूवा क़ी ओर बहते हैं।

● The 2016 Kerala 16th Legislative Assembly election was held on 16 May 2016 to elect 140 MLAs to

the Kerala Legislative Assembly.

● The result was declared on 19 May 2016.

● The Left Democratic Front (LDF) won the election, defeating the incumbent United Democratic Front

(UDF), led by the Indian National Congress (INC), which could only win 47 seats in the election.

Major Dams

● Idukki-dam: Idukki Dam stands between the two mountains and one of the highest arch dams in Asia.

● Malampuzha Dam: Malampuzha Dam is located on the foot hills of the Western Ghats and is the largest

reservoir in Kerala state.

● Parambikulam Dam: Parambikulam Dam is the top ten embankment dams in the world and ranks

number one in India. This embankment dam is built across the Parambikulam river and located in the

Palakkad district in the Western Ghats.

● Neyyar Dam: Neyyar Dam on the Neyyar river is a gravity dam, located on the foot of the Western

Ghats in Thiruvananthapuram district.

● Kakkayam Dam: Kakkayam Dam is the most picturesque dam site in Kerala and listed as one of the

best hydel tourism destination in the state.

● Pazhassi Dam: Pazhassi Dam or Kulur Barrage is stone masonry structure dam constructed over

Valapattanam river in Kannur district.

● Banasura Sagar Dam: Banasura Sagar Dam in Wayanad District of Kerala is home to the only floating

solar power plant in India, The dam is the largest earth dam in India and the reservoir submerged the

surrounding areas of Banasura Hill.

General Facts

● The first two literate Municipal Town Kottayam, and district Ernakulam in India are in Kerala.

● Ernakulam also became India’s first Bachat (Savings) district.

● Kerala has the highest sex ratio, lowest population growth rate, highest literacy rate, highest

life expectancy and the highest Human Development Index (HDI) among the other states in

India.

● Kerala is the only state which has highest Human Development Index (HDI of 0.79). It has

highest literacy rate of 94 %, highest sex ratio of 1024 and highest life expectancy of 77

years. It is also the least corrupt Indian state as per Transparency International survey.

● Sabrimala (abode of lord Ayyappan) is famous pilgrimage.

● Kochi (Cochin) the major port is also known as “Queen of Arabian Sea”.

Western Ghats (Shared Site): 2012The Western Ghats, also known as the Sahyadri Mountains, a mountain range along the

western side of India and one of the world's ten "Hottest biodiversity hotspots". A total of

thirty nine properties (including national parks, wildlife sanctuaries and reserve forests) were

designated as World Heritage Sites – twenty in the state of Kerala, ten in Karnataka, five in
