Editorial
The world is Keppel’s stage. And hailing from
its vast corners are Keppelites with multi-talents
giving of their very best to better their encore
sterling performance year-on-year (see
centrespread).
With a footprint in 30 countries, Keppelites,
wherever they are, no longer compete on the local
level. We are pitting ourselves against international
players and global citizens – from the Americans
to the Japanese – to not just survive but thrive.
The embrace of talent, whether from within or
outside of Singapore was reiterated recently by
Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew.
Here, Keppel has been ahead of time. We have
long understood and developed this inclusive
approach to talent attraction and management.
We recognise that in today’s global market,
attracting, retaining and rewarding the best talents
from Singapore and the world over, will decide
if we excel in our performance or perish.
And Keppel has much to offer to excite and entice
talents of the world. We don’t offer jobs but
careers: a world of opportunities literally, with our
global span, market and technological leadership
in our key businesses for those with willing hearts
and the dare to push farther and higher.
We need talent – with the right attitude,
competencies and a global mindset – to support
and grow our global businesses.
Our 29,000 Keppelites of some 40 nationalities
are constantly fuelled and challenged to traverse
the geography of personal and professional
landscapes to grow with the Group.
By challenging Keppelites to continue to best their
performances, Keppel continues to be sought after
by businesses around the globe as the choice
partner.
To be the best, we pick the best and become the
best. Competition compels us to deliver better
value. It puts to the test our mettle. For iron
sharpens iron. We cannot stop the levelling of the
playing field, but we can level up by pushing much
harder and working much smarter.
This is the Keppel way to continue to create
shareholder wealth.

Enduringthe 19-foot punch through, the legs of ENSCO 107remained unscathed withminor damages to peripheralstructures at the drill floorsurrounds.
Nevertheless, the ENSCOproject team tookno chances. ENSCOInternational Inc. (ENSCO)requested for Keppel FELS’help onsite. Within a fewhours, Keppel’s Flying Squadwas activated to fly intoVietnam. Inspection revealeddamages were confined tothe drill floor, wind walls andelectrical systems.
Mr Fred Glander, EngineeringManager of ENSCO said,“The repairs were confinedto a small vertical area aboveand below the drill floor.Keppel FELS had everythingorganised and on track so Ihad all the confidence inKFELS and our rig team tofinish the job.”
The rig arrived at Keppel FELSin Singapore 10 days later. The swift diagnosis by theflying squad, and advancepreparation by Keppel FELSat the yard, enabled repairson ENSCO 107 to gounderway immediately uponher arrival.
Further tests and checkswere carried out to confirmno other damages. Theworks were initially meantto be completed in 41days. However, with theclose cooperation anddetermination of the ENSCOand Keppel FELS projectteams, the repair works werecompleted on 30 July 2006,7 days ahead of schedule.ENSCO 107 has sincereturned to work offshoreVietnam.

OCEAN SOVEREIGN ININDONESIAOcean Sovereign had beenoperating off Surabaya,Indonesia when it suffereddamage to its starboardleg on that fateful day on13 August 2006. The leg rackon one chord was damagedin the stressed area. At thesame time, its chords andbracing pipes had sufferedmajor deflection.
Keppel FELS’ Flying Squadwasted no time inresponding to the call fromDiamond Offshore.
A two-man advance partywas sent on board the rig tosurvey the damage. After theassessment, Keppel FELSorganised a team of skilledworkers and preparedbracing materials to be sentto the rig by boat.
A staging foreman was alsosent to supervise thescaffolding set up and safetyand by 29 Sept 2006, the fullteam had arrived and wasready to start repair works.
The flying squad workedfrom heights of 100 feet andfaced high winds of up to20 knots. While bravingthese challenges, theycontinuously observed safetyrules even as they workedthrough the night. Therepairs included thestraightening of the legdeflection as well as therepairing of the racks.
Despite a last minutediscovery that two morebracing pipes needed to bereplaced, the Keppel FELSproject team led bySuperintendent, Goh KharPoh who exuded the “CanDo” spirit, managedto complete the wholeoperation ahead of time.
Describing the challenges,Khar Poh said “Initially, wehad inadequate liftingfacilities as the crane was nothigh enough. So we set upan air tugger and pulleysystem, kept them in positionand performed our liftingoperations.
“The difficulties downstreamwere overcome by sheer hardwork, great teamwork andour strong commitment tocustomer satisfaction. Thanks to the support andefficiency of OceanSovereign’s OffshoreInstallation Manager (OIM)and crew, we managed toaccomplish our repairs aheadof schedule.”
Keppel FELS first built theOcean Sovereign in 1981and more recently in 2003completed water depthupgrades and major repairsfor Diamond Offshore. Theupgrade significantlyextended the useful life andcapabilities of the rig.

Keppel O&M’s philosophy isto invest selectively incapacity amid the currentboom. This was reflected inthe approach it took ininvesting in Bintan andconverting its shipyards in thePhilippines to undertakeoffshore fabrication work.
Mr Choo Chiau Beng, KeppelO&M’s Chairman and CEOshared this during a recentmeeting with a group of 18investors from the UnitedKingdom. CFO Mr Sit Peng
Investing into QualitySang and Keppel FELS’ EDMr Michael Chia co-hostedthe meeting alongsideMr Choo.
Managing capacityconstraints, according toMr Choo, was not the onlyissue that rig building yardslike Keppel had to deal with. There were other factors inthe supply chain that onehad to manage, such as thecritical components in the rigjacking systems and legsystems and the supply of
quality steel. Keppel’sadvantages are that itdevelops its own proprietarydesigns and is wellconnected to itsmanufacturing source.
These were just some of thetakeaways by the investorsduring the hour longmeeting with Keppel O&M’ssenior management. Thepassion, knowledge andexperience of Keppel’smanagement left a deepimpression.

Keppelite gleans somethoughts behind thisinitiative from its championMr Ang Wee Gee, KeppelLand’s Director of RegionalInvestments (RI). Currently,it is piloted in RI.
1. What is the aim of theProgramme? It is to groom youngmanagers in the headoffice to assume middlemanagement positions, such as a city head by thetime the manager reacheshis or her mid thirties.
2. What is the criterion forshortlisting candidates? The individual’s potentialand work performanceassessment are the maincriteria used to determine hisor her eligibility for theProgramme. Line managers
and functional heads canalso nominate eligible stafffor consideration.
3. Will external expertisefor coaching andmentoring be engaged? As a start, we are involvingkey RI line managers toprovide coaching andmentoring to the youngmanagers. Through sharingof their wealth ofexperiences, organisationalknowledge and workexpertise, the youngmanagers will benefit fromtheir mentors’ guidance.
In a way, we are also trainingour line managers to be goodmentors. RI line managershave also been provided withtraining to prepare them fortheir mentoring roles.

Oil. There is more than meetsthe eye about this preciouscommodity and energyresource.
Keppelite brings to you aseries of info-educationalpieces to grease yourknowledge.
Crude oil and refinedproducts are transported bytankers, pipelines, bargesand trucks.
In Europe, oil is oftenofficially measured in metrictons; in Japan, in kilolitres. But in the United States andCanada, and throughout theworld, the basic unit remains
Why a barrel of oil?“the barrel” though hardlyany one has seen an oil-fashioned crude oil barrel, except in a museum.
When oil first started flowingout of the wells, in westernPennsylvania in the 1860s,desperate oil men ransackedfarmhouses, barns, cellars, stores, and trash yards forany kind of barrel – that formolasses, beer, whiskey, cider, turpentine, salt, fish,or whatever else washandy.
But as coopers began tomake barrels especially forthe oil trade, one standardsize emerged, and that size
Do you know?
One barrel of oil is equivalent to:
• 159 litres (about 80 large fizzy drink bottles)• 42 US gallons or 35 imperial gallons (enough to fit in
the petrol tanks of about four cars)• 280 pints (many mugs of beer to last through any
football season)
The weight of a barrel depends on where the oil comesfrom. However, there are about 8 barrels in a tonne. Totalworld production/consumption (as of 2005) isapproximately 84 million barrels per day.
continues to be the norm tothe present. It is 42 gallons.
The number was borrowedfrom England, where astatute in 1482 under KingEdward IV established 42gallons as the standard sizebarrel for herring in order toend skulduggery in thepacking of fish. At the time, herring fishing was thebiggest business in the NorthSea.
By 1866, seven years afterColonel Drake drilled his well,Pennsylvania producersconfirmed the 42-gallonbarrel as their standard asopposed to say, the 3-gallon
wine barrel or the 32-gallonLondon ale barrel or the36-gallon London beerbarrel.
And that, in a roundaboutway, brings us right back tothe present day. For the 42-gallon barrel is still used asthe standard measurement, even if not as a physicalreceptacle, in the biggestbusiness in the North Sea –which today, of course, is notherring, but oil. keppelite

Storm trooperWhen Hurricane Rita struckHouston in September of2005, Tak On Cheung, orT.O., lived out his worstnightmare.
With Keppel AmFELS since1993, T.O. had moved fromBrownsville to Houston in2002 to take up a newposition in Keppel O&MUSA.
When the crisis struck, hehad just left for a churchmission trip to the UK withhis wife and youngestdaughter but his eldestdaughter, Yan Wingremained in Houston toattend school.
The Keppelite of 18 yearscollected his calm and founda way to get his daughter outof harm’s way. He managedto contact a friend to houseYan Wing in her home, further up north and awayfrom the storm’s ravages.
Today, a grateful T.O. says,“We really thank God fordirecting Rita away from thewest of Houston finally, which spared us theheartache and headache ofgetting hit by a hurricane.”
At work, T.O. has also bravedother storms. When he firstmoved to the United States16 years ago, under the
Keppelites Abroad
leadership of Mr Y.Y. Chow, former President of AmFELS,he was tasked to getAmFELS in Brownsville upand running.
He shares fondly, “Duringthe early development ofAmFels, we faced manytough situations. Evenstationery and paper were intight supply! I told myengineers that we could notafford to waste any resources. We re-used and wrote onevery inch of the paper!
“We took off by controllingexpenditure and expandingt h e b u s i n e s s . G o o dleadership and teamworkhelped us through those verytough times.”
Another challenge he facedduring the course of his workwas when he handled theQ4000 project, which involvedthe design and constructionof a new prototype,state-of-the-art hybridsemisubmersible. As thedesign was not finalised atthe time of the contract, there were many designchanges during theconstruction.
With a laugh, he quips, “Ialmost ‘died’ during thatproject. However, I did learna lot from it and I believeI am now wiser and better
at handling difficultsituations. One thing I reallyappreciate about Keppel isthe support and trust fromthe bosses.”
Having been in the UnitedStates for over a decade now,T.O. is fully acclimatised tothe culture, involving himselfin church and communityactivities. It is a far cry fromwhen he first arrived in theuncertain environment ofBrownsville and insisted onpicking an apartment closeto a police station and a24-hour convenience store. He chuckles at the memory
and calls it “conservativethinking”.
Today, watching his effortscome to fruition with thegrowth of Keppel AmFELSgives him great satisfaction. He carries the same optimismand enthusiasm as he takeson the new challenge asVP of Offshore InnovativeSolutions (OIS), a recent jointventure between KeppelO&M USA and Bennett &Associates (BASS), to developnew cost-effective designconcepts for offshore rigsand floating productionsystems. keppelite
