Editorial

Keppelite I May 2007

Safety in our DNA

The Singapore economy is of the first world’s

standard, but we cannot say the same for our

country’s workplace safety record.

Singapore’s industrial accident rate is higher than

that of Western Europe. In recent years, with a

spate of industrial accidents, workplace safety has

come very much under the spotlight.

The Singapore government has tightened the

screws, and has set a national target of 2.5 fatalities

per 100,000 workers by 2015. The effort is

beginning to bear fruit. With active buy-in from

the private sector, we are witnessing some decline

in accident rate at the national level.

Here at the Keppel Group, we are fully committed

to workplace safety (see page 20-21). We have

come a long way in driving safety initiatives in the

last 10 years, and have seen significant

improvements, particularly in our offshore and

marine division. It is, however, still not enough.

One incident is one far too many.

Safety of our people is very important to us. We

want to see everyone who comes to work return

home safely to their family. Besides, there is a good

business case for the promotion of workplace

safety. Imagine the disruption to work, the amount

of manhours lost and the damage to property an

accident can cause. All these are translated into

immediate loss to the bottomline of the company.

There is also the high unquantifiable cost to our

business when we are callous about the safety of

our people. The loss of our reputation and goodwill

with our stakeholders is just too tremendous in

today’s marketplace. Employees would lose their

trust in the company and would not put in their

best effort at work. Customers and business

associates would avoid doing business with us.

Investors would spurn us. The general public could

turn their sentiments against us and would not

buy our products and services.

Safety consciousness has to become second nature

to everyone of us, from the Board of Directors

and management to the individual worker on the

shop floor. Safety has to be a top item on our

agendas. It has to become a core value etched into

our corporate DNA.

While we may never completely eliminate incidents

as long as we are in business, we can know that

safety has become an integral part of us.

When we actively take care of our own safety as

well as that of our colleague working next to us,

you know safety has been ingrained in us.

Based on potential prospectsand enquiries, the order flowoutlook is positive.

FINANCIALPERFORMANCEI am pleased to report thatthe Group achieved a PATMIof $252m in 1Q2007. This isan increase of 48% over thesame period last year.

We continued to improve onall our key performanceindicators. Based on ourperformance for 1Q, I believethat our balance sheetstrength coupled with strongcashflows from operations

Building growth enginesKeppel Corporation delivered a strong set of results for 1Q2007 and continuesto strengthen its key businesses to pursue further growth opportunities.Keppelite reproduces Executive Chairman Mr Lim Chee Onn’s remarks at thewebcast of the Group’s 1Q results on 26 April 2007.

continuously harness as aGroup.

We achieved another inroadinto the Middle East market.Keppel Offshore & Marine(Keppel O&M) will bedeveloping a new shipyard inQatar with its partner, QatarGas Transport Company. Wewill provide our expertise todesign, build and managethe yard. This strategicinitiative will further entrenchour participation in thegrowing Liquefied NaturalGas (LNG) market, in whichKeppel O&M is currentlyconverting the world’s firstLNG Floating Storage Re-gasification Unit (FSRU), aswell as in FPSO and FSOconversions.

M e a n w h i l e , K e p p e lIntegrated Engineering (KIE)is progressing well on theintegrated solid wastemanagement facility inQatar, following its successful$1.7b contract win inSeptember last year. We arestudying the opportunitiesfor our other business unitsnow that we have a strategicbeach head in the MiddleEast.

Likewise, the Group is alsowell positioned to leverage

Vietnam’s strong economicgrowth. It is a market inwhich the Keppel brandname is already widelyrecognised and highlyregarded.

We were amongst the earlybusinesses to establish apresence there. Over the lasttwo months, Keppel Landhas sewn up two more jointventures to build primeresidential homes in Ho ChiMinh City.

In March this year, KeppelO&M delivered Vietnam’sfirst fully-owned jackup rigto PetroVietnam twomonths ahead of schedule.PetroVietnam has indicatedtheir interest in setting up arigbuilding yard along theVietnamese coast in its effortto develop into a key regionaloil and gas hub with theirproven oil reserves. We arestudying the opportunitiesfor us to be a valued partnerin its growth.

As it stands, our Oil & Gasarm, Singapore PetroleumCompany (SPC) already holdsparticipatory interests in oiland gas acreages in offshoreVietnam.

Vietnam is a market in which the Keppel brand is highly regarded. PV Drilling I (seen here), aKFELS B Class jackup rig, was delivered to PetroVietnam two months ahead of schedule inMarch this year

In the competitive Chinesemarket, KIE has been steadilystrengthening its marketleadership. In the last 12-15months, it has securedseveral contracts to providesolid waste and watertreatment technologies andservices in Suzhou,Zhongshan, Changshu,Shenzhen, Tianjin andJiangyin. These contractsfurther strengthen Keppel’spresence in these markets asKeppel Land already operatesin some of these cities.

In summary, the global arenacontinues to present growthopportunities for the Group.Understanding thesemarkets is an intangible yetvaluable competency withinKeppel. This, combined withour technology leadership, will enable us to continue toextend our global footprinteffectively and efficientlybeginning with our homebase.

As an example, owing toprudent investment and the

strong and improving officemarket in Singapore, Keppelhas become the largestdeveloper and operator ofprime office space and willremain so over the next fewyears. This is clearly a resultof building on our strongtrack record as a qualitydeveloper of prime officebuildings in the SingaporeCentral Business District. Weshall apply this expertise inother key Asian cities and yetmaintain our asset-lightapproach by working withK-REIT Asia and throughother similar arrangements.

Over the course of this year,it should become clearerthat the Group’s earningswill be more broad-based,with higher contributionsfrom Property andInfrastructure. We arepursuing several initiativesthat will build even morerobustness into our businessmodels. This underscoresthe very heart of the Group’sstrategy. It is to build eachof our key business unitsinto a strong growth engineproviding sustainableearnings. keppelite

BUSINESS REVIEW &OUTLOOK

Offshore & MarineAlthough only $600m ofnew orders were secured forthe quarter, an additional$900m of orders weresecured in the month of Aprilalone. Our net orderbookas at end of first quarterremains at around $10b. Thisincludes a repeat order for anew rig slated for delivery in

2010, sustaining ourearnings visibility for thenext four years.

Besides high level ofenquiries for jackup rigs andsemisubmersibles, we arealso expecting moreconversion and shipbuildingcontracts. Based on potentialprospects in the pipeline, theoutlook for order flow thisyear remains strong.

With the large amount ofundeveloped deepwaterresources, there is higherpotential for E&P projects togo into deeper drilling. Thiswill benefit the Offshore &

Marine Division as we havethe skill sets and track recordto meet our customers’requirements.

Our new joint venture inQatar will tap on ourexpertise in the repair of LNGcarriers, FPSO and FSOconversions.

assets. It has grown itsportfolio outside ofSoutheast Asia, through anewly acquired block inAustralia. It is also seeking toincrease its stake off thecoast of Cambodia.

PropertyThe growth of the primeresidential market inSingapore was propelled bythe inflow of expatriates andoverseas investors in theAsia-Pacific region. As such, there has been an increasedshare of private homesbought by foreigners. In addition, the rise innumber of high-net-worth-individuals in Singaporeoffers good opportunity forthe luxury residential market.

We recently launched theunique iconic project,Reflections at Keppel Bay,featuring 1,129 luxuryapartments which offerwaterfront lifestyle withmarina amenities. Highselling prices have beenachieved for the initial unitslaunched with about 90%sold.

Projected demand for primeoffice space is expected tooutstrip new supplies until2010. The situation isaggravated by the reductionof stock as old buildingsare withdrawn forredevelopment.

Keppel Land and itsconsortium have recentlyexercised the option topurchase Phase II of theMBFC.

Saigon Sports City, a 3,000-unit integrated township development in Ho Chi Minh City, willmeet the rising Vietnamese middle-class aspirations for quality housing

Together with MBFC Phase I,its existing office portfolio, and the potentialredevelopment of OceanBuilding in the prime RafflesPlace area, our PropertyDivision is likely to be a keybeneficiary from the tightsupply and appreciatingoffice rental in the CBD.

K-REIT Asia aims to achievethe target portfolio size of$2b over the next fewyears. It is actively seekingacquisitions of primecommercial properties inSingapore and other growthcities in Asia. We are the

largest Prime Grade A officedeveloper in the CBD.

Outside of Singapore,Property Division continuesto pursue regional expansionwith more investmentsinto Vietnam. Vietnam’svibrant economic growth, its accession into theWorld Trade Organisation, favourable demographicsalong with other positivefactors, is expected to drivethe demand for quality homeownership.

Villa Riveria, an exclusive101-unit waterfront villa

development with a scenicfrontage along Saigon River, has been fully sold. We arecurrently developing SaigonSports City, a 64-ha master-planned integrated townshipdevelopment comprisingresidential, commercial, andretail components in Ho ChiMinh City.

We have made two other siteacquisitions recently, a 4.8-haprime site in Ho Chi MinhCity to build 1,500 qualityapartments, and anotherto develop 500 primewaterfront condominiumsfacing the Saigon River.

InfrastructureOur Infrastructure projectshave been making goodheadway since the beginningof this year. Keppel MerlimauCogen plant, NEWater Plantand power barges in Ecuadorhave all commencedoperations.

The concerns of climaticchange and global warminghave resulted in measurestaken to control pollutionand greenhouse gasemission. Our suite ofenvironmental solutions andtrack record has put us in astrong position to pursuewaste management projectsin the Asia Pacific region.

On order flow for O&MCCB: Our orderbook is up to2010 and we are in no hurryto push our orderbooktoo hard due to theunpredictability of costs andcurrencies. When the rightprojects and margins arethere, we will go for them.We are quite comfortablewith what we have and ourfocus is on execution anddelivering results to ourshareholders.

One quarter does notdetermine the whole yearand we are quite confidentthat order flow for this yearremains strong.

On capabilities beyondjackupsCCB: We do not want toalways compete at the lowerend of the market. We go forthe niche segments of theindustry.

We have over 25% of theworld’s market in newbuildsemisubmersibles (semis).Altogether we have about10 newbuild semis that we

In Brazil, we are building thetwo of Petrobras’s largestproduction platforms – theP-52 and P-51. These areworth over US$1.5b.

In fact, Petrobras isnegotiating with ourconsortium, of which weown 75%, for the P-56 whichis a repeat of the P-51.

On Infrastructure’sturnaroundTSH: The Division hasreturned to profitability.Whether or not it will reach10% of the Group’s totalprofit really depends on whatthat figure is going to be. ButI would say that we haveturned around quite stronglyand I am confident that it willbe a meaningful contributionto our bottom-line by theend of this year.

On environmentalengineering businessesCCW: Our Qatar project isprogressing on schedule and

With our multi-business strategy, Group earnings will become more broad-based withcontributions coming from all Divisions

we should be able to hit ourmilestone completion ofabout more than 20% in2007. The project is slated forcompletion in 2009.

In terms of ordermomentum, there are lots ofupcoming tenders for waterprojects in Saudi Arabia,Abu Dhabi and Qatar.

More than that, in Europe,we see opportunities in thewaste to energy (WTE)business in view of the banof landfills starting inGermany, a leader inenvironmental protectioninitiatives. As such, weexpect these initiatives to bepassed throughout the entireEU region. We also expectsome opportunities in theWTE segment in SoutheastAsia and Asia.

On the likelihood of aninfrastructure trustTSH: We have several assetsthat we are managing andoperating. Once we haveenhanced our operatingcapability to a certain level,it might be a good idea tolook at it.

On the cogenerationplantOTG: We have been sellingelectricity to the market sinceOctober last year when westarted our commissioningprogramme. The plant’sperformance is better thanwhat we have contracted.

We will be selling all ourenergy to the pool and ourretail company, Keppel

Electric, will contract withretail customers directly.

On SPC’s higher refiningmarginsCCB: Despite the fact that abig cracker was underrenovation this quarter, therefinery has very highperformance and highavailability, so that we cancapture the margins whenthey are available.

On capital managementTSH: Our cashflow hasindeed been strong. Ourgearing has come down butwe are still producing positiveEVA. In fact for the quarter, our ROE continued toimprove. This gives us a verygood position from which togrow our businesses.

We are already paying out28 cents of capitaldistribution, and I believe wewill continue with our highpayout ratio of some 50-60% in the next few years.

Sheth Remash: I mustcongratulate you for doingsuch a good business in thequarter...(turning toshareholders) You knowwhat the price wasyesterday? $21.70 (N.B.Price is prior to stock split). How can you sell theshares?...That’s why I nevertouch Keppel Corporation’sshares. DEBUTING LOCAL TALENTRachel Goh Da Ling andDaphne Leong, top BA(Hons) design students ofLASALLE College of the Arts, were the brains behind thefresh and contemporary lookof Uniquely Singapore.

The design was inspired bykey characteristics of the city-state’s identity like courage, strength and excellence, asembodied in the bright redhull helmed by the Lion Headsymbol as well as thetwinkling stars.

According to its creators,“The colours, red andwhite, play an importantpart in the design. Like thecolours of our national flag, red symbolises universalbrotherhood and equality ofman while white signifies

pervading and everlastingpurity and virtue. We wantedthe strong national coloursto distinguish UniquelySingapore from the rest ofthe yachts.

“The stars are stylisticallydesigned so that they appearto be bursting and fluid. Theysymbolise the brilliance, versatility and energy of thepeople of Singapore, and thestrong spirit of adventureexpressed by the five pointsspreading across and out ofthe hull and sail. Singapore, although a tiny dot on theatlas, is bursting onto theworld stage in all aspects.”

The partnership betweenKeppel and LASALLE for theexcellent design of UniquelySingapore has gone downwell with Minister Tharman, who commended “Keppelfor not only encouraging itsown talents to take up thechallenge in this endeavourbut also in offering thisplatform to showcaseSingapore’s young talents.”

Future residents of MarinaBay Residences willappreciate the fact thattheir homes have beendesigned with care for theenvironment.

From the constructiontechniques used, to theextensive landscaping, evento the solar-powered aircraftwarning light on the roof, ahost of environmentprotective features hasbeen factored into thistrend-setting waterfrontdevelopment.

So ‘green’ are elements inthe 55-storey tower that theyhave been recognised with aGreen Mark Award fromSingapore’s Building andConstruction Authority.

Speaking for the consortium

Marina Bay Residences achievesGreen Mark Award

(a joint venture of KeppelLand, Cheung KongHoldings and HongKongLand) behind the Marina BayFinancial Centre (MBFC),GM Mr David Martin sharedthat a greener approach tothe design made goodbusiness sense apart frombeing the right thing to dofor the environment.

“We believe the energy-saving features to beincorporated in the MarinaBay Residences as part of theGreen Mark Award willreduce the long term costs ofbuilding management to thebenefit of both the ownersand developers,” Mr Martinsaid.

“On the marketing side, weare already noticing a higherlevel of awareness about the

Green Mark among potentialbuyers and tenants, andsee our investment in theGreen Mark process as anopportunity to ‘future-proof’this landmark developmenton the Marina Baywaterfront.”

Even before the first pile wasdriven, the MBFC developershave worked out ways tokeep the construction asclean and green aspossible. In the deep cementmixing works for groundimprovement, an innovativeapproach to using seawaterpumped from Marina Bayinstead of PUB water savedan estimated 240,000cubic metres of freshwater.

Extensive landscaping, sky terraces and gardenswill reduce the generaltemperature of the buildingand its surrounds. And evenspecies of ‘non-thirsty’ plantshave been selected to saveon water usage.

“Green spaces such as27th and 47th sky terraces, seventh storey podiumgarden and private roofgarden are evenly distributedthroughout the high-rise55-storey building block tospread the cooling load,”Mr Martin explained.

The ‘envelope’ of thebuilding was designed forthermal efficiency, from thedirection it lies on the site, tothe use of heat reducingglass, and even the 1.5 metreoverhanging balconiescasting welcome shadeon the occupants belowin Singapore’s tropicalconditions.

Smart electronics also makea difference. A sophisticated,sensor-driven venting systemin the carpark will targetareas as and whenventilation is needed, savingon energy. Residents willtravel by highly efficient, lowpower consumption lifts, while duel pneumatic chutesare on standby to whiskaway separated recycling andrefuse.

Every encouragement isoffered to residents to utilisethe many public transportoptions on hand. Anextensive covered walkwayand pedestrian network linksthe entire MBFC and MassRapid Transit.

“As developers, we wantthe owners of Marina BayResidences to love wherethey live, and that extends toknowing that we’ve donewhat’s possible to make itenvironmentally friendly,”Mr Martin shared. keppeliteMr Scott Rudisel, Project Director for Marina Bay Financial Centre receives BCA’s Green Mark

Keppel Kazakhstan’sApprenticeship Scheme, has in recent years, beencontributing to the skillsdevelopment of the peoplein Aktau, a seaport on theCaspian Sea.

Mr Yeshmanov, Director ofMangistau PolytechnicCollege, shared on the meritsof the scheme, “KeppelKazakhstan’s ApprenticeshipScheme allows a non-professional youth toobtain trade knowledge, an a t i o n a l l y - r e c o g n i s e dcertificate and employment.We do appreciate whatKeppel Kazakhstan isdoing and look forward toan efficient long-termcooperation.”

Saule Sharipova, Head ofHuman Resources at KeppelKazakhstan, shares how thescheme is part of KeppelKazakhstan’s ongoing effortsto train and upgrade theskills of both its current andfuture employees.

On the ApprenticeshipSchemeThis scheme originallycommenced in KeppelOffshore & Marine (KeppelO&M) in Singapore as astructured programme toequip trainees with skills suchas piping fabrication, welding, steel fabricationand marine electrical

Seeding the futuretechnology. The one-yearscheme has evolved toenable Keppel O&M’soverseas yards to meet therespective local needs.

Keppel Kazakhstan had anon-the-job training schemewhen it commencedoperations in 2005. Afterdiscussions with theManagers and ProductionSuperintendents, an upgradeof that scheme was deemednecessary as the offshoreindustry in Kazakhstan is stillfairly new.

The Apprenticeship Schemeenables locals to gain deeperunderstanding of andexposure to the offshoreindustry and be attracted tocarve careers in it.

On challengesAs the ApprenticeshipScheme was new and is stillevolving, we monitored itclosely together with thelocal Governor’s office andthe Mangistau EducationDepartment, which jointlyorganised the scheme. Manymeetings and discussionswere held to ensure aconsistent and structuredframework for the scheme.

On the processApprentices are appointedfollowing a stringentselection process. They thenundergo theoretical and

practical trainings at thelocal Mangistau PolytechnicCollege and at KeppelKazakhstan yard.

Theory classes, conducted byKazakh teachers with morethan 20 years experience intheir chosen fields, make up40% while practical trainingtakes up the remaining time.Safety is emphasised at alltimes.

U p o n c o m p l e t i o n ,apprent ices are g ivennat iona l ly recognisedcertificates. About 70% ofthe student cohort is selectedto join Keppel for further on-the-job training in grinding,welding and cutting.

The on-the-job training isconducted by qualifiedSuperintendents and

Supervisors from Singapore.Apprentices are assigned tomentors who supervise andmonitor their progress. Theydo not work on the actualprojects at the yard untilthey qualify.

On the apprenticesWe have 47 apprentices inour first batch. We haveselected about 100apprentices for our secondcohort, which will start theprogramme in June 2007.

On aspirationsWe hope to have a successfulscheme independent ofoperations which will be ableto produce many well-skilledworkers who will carvemeaningful careers withKeppel Kazakhstan. keppelite

Keppelite reproduces aBusiness Times (BT) article byPamela Chew published on1 May 2007 which profiledthree Can Do! Keppelwomen executives blazingtheir trails overseas.

More often than not, assumptions are made aboutwomen working overseas.Firstly, that women are notinterested in being postedoverseas; secondly, thatfamily may prevent themfrom venturing away fromhome; and that those whodare venture abroad aredoomed to fail in the face ofprejudice in certain countries.

But a survey by MercerHuman Resource Consultinglate last year showed thatthe number of Singaporewomen heading for foreignshores has risen 10 times to480 from just 47 six yearsago. The global surveycovered over 100multinational companieswith 17,000 male andfemale internationalassignees.

Keppel Group CorporateCommunications GMMs Wang Look Fung said,“We’re seeing a growingnumber of women who arewilling to leave their comfortzone to take up thechallenge of workingoverseas in far-flung placeslike Azerbaijan and Brazil . . .They are taking up a

Keppel women making waves abroadspectrum of executive andmanagerial positions acrossthe offshore & marine, infrastructure and propertybusinesses in the KeppelGroup.”

And to show, Keppel hasthree women executiveswith a yen for adventuresupporting this growingtrend.

THE GO-GETTERGladys Ng, in her earlythirties, is a manager withKeppel Land overseeingmarketing for properties inVietnam.

A hankering for challengesproved to be a boon for her

when she stepped feet in HoChi Minh City almost fouryears ago. “Not everythingover here is spelt out in blackand white like it is inSingapore . . . I hardly knewthe market when I arrivedbut still managed to set upoffice and get the projectsgoing within a year.”

Projects that Gladyshandled include the VillaRiviera – a gated waterfrontdevelopment with 101 villas, the An Phu Ward ResidentialDevelopment – premiumresidences, and SaigonSports City, a fully integratedtownship with a 15-ha areadesignated for public sportsfacilities when developed.

Gladys shared thatorganising the ‘VietnamInvestment Conference’ in2004 was her greatestaccomplishment – an eventthat spanned Hanoi and HoChi Minh City.

“I was the only one left inHo Chi Minh City to planand coordinate a ceremonywhere the master plan ofone of our projects herewas to be unveiled – the resthad travelled to Hanoi forthe preceding conference.

“But with the help of mycolleagues in Singapore, theevent turned out to be agreat success,” Gladys said.

When asked if she wouldbe as successful as she isnow if she had remained inSingapore, Gladys said, “Asone of the pioneer expatsin the Vietnam propertyindustry, my market valuehas definitely gone up a lot -I’ve made many contacts andbuilt a solid network.”

THE FREE SPIRITIn December 2003, Braziliancompany Petrobras awardedthe Keppel-led consortiumthe contract for the P-52floating production unitwhich stands at 34 storeyshigh and has a main deckequivalent to 10 Olympic-sized swimming pools.

engineer there, Dawn Chin,27, jumped at theopportunity – within twomonths, she was in Brazil. She had earlier expressed aninterest in working inKazakhstan.

“I think that I am born in theright generation wherepeople are more open-minded towards womenholding equal status as menin the business world . . . Wehave equal opportunities fortravelling and workingabroad, especially withbusinesses today goingglobal.”

While she did face her fairshare of parental objectioninitially, Dawn’s family hasaccepted her ‘travellingways’.

“I’ve been recently secondedfor a short stint at ourNorwegian subsidiary andmy parents had hardly anyreaction to the news –they’re used to it,” she said. But even those brimmingwith wanderlust suffer theoccasional bout of homesickness. “I must admit that

I miss my family and lovedones terribly, but having saidso, I am ever ready to ventureabroad if the need arises,”Dawn said, staying trueto form.

THE GLOBAL CITIZENTucked in the Caspian regionbut far from landlocked isKeppel FELS scholar Tracy Lu,35, a Singapore permanentresident who works as acommercial executive with

the Caspian ShipyardCompany (CSC), subsidiaryof Keppel O&M.

Tracy grew up in Chinabut has lived in Singaporefor a lengthy period. Shechallenges herself bystepping out of her comfortzone – in 2004, she wasseconded to CSC and basedin Baku, Azerbaijan. TheCaspian region is excitingand exotic as it is off thebeaten path but workingthere poses its challenges –especially for women – beinga Middle East country.

“As a woman in this industry,we face limitations anddisadvantages over malecounterparts . . . Whennegotiating contracts in theMiddle East, men prefertalking to their own gender– I usually need my malecolleagues with me whenI attend negotiation

meetings,” Tracy said. Butshe added that women seemless daunted now as “there’sa recent trend of morewomen joining this so-calledmale-dominated industry”.

Tertiary institutions BTcontacted agreed that theintake for courses related tothe marine industry has beenhealthy over the past fewyears.

The situation is still far fromperfect as there have beenoccasions where “malecolleagues question femaleability and authority assupervisors”, Tracy said. Sheadded that what motivatesher is an old Chinese saying– “Be influenced by whatone constantly sees andhears”. She said, “I guessover time, I’ve nurtured a‘global mindset’ and amready to be deployed to anypart of the world.” keppelite

Keppelites Abroad

Ken-do in KazakhstanFor someone who dislikestravelling, Kenneth LongHian Seng, CFO of KeppelKazakhstan, has gone theextra mile for work, havingbeen posted overseas incountries like China and asfar as Azerbaijan. Posted toAktau, Kazakhstan, sinceearly 2006, Kenneth sharedwith Keppelite thechallenges of working in aforeign and faraway landduring a recent trip home.

Attracting worldwide interestwhen its oil fields werediscovered circa 1979,Kazakhstan’s rich historyspans from colonisation bythe Russian Empire, to Sovietrule before its declaration ofindependence in 1991. Thecountry has since madesignificant progress inopening its doors to theworld and its bountifulopportunities attractedKenneth to take the routeless travelled.

While it is exciting to witnessthe changes in the country, life there has not been abed of roses. One of thechallenges Kenneth faced atwork was communicationwith his local colleagues. Fewspeak English fluently. Tomake himself understood, hefound himself having to cutback on ‘complicated’ words

and picked up simpleKazakh phrases to bridgethe communication gap.

Another uphill challengewas the task of peoplemanagement. The nature ofthe local people is aptlydescribed by the word“Kazakh” itself. Derivedfrom an ancient Turkic word,it means “independent, afree spirit” and reflects thenomadic lifestyles of theirancestors who roamed theland on horseback.

Another factor that Kennethhad to take intoconsideration is the culturaldifferences between theWestern and EasternKazakhs. Western Kazakhswho live closer to theCaspian Sea tend to retaintheir independence anddislike taking orders. Theircounterparts from the Eastare easier to manage in anoffice environment as theylive closer to China and aremore open to the idea ofcorporate structure orhierachy. It took him a yearto learn how to manage thelocal team.

Work challenges aside, domestic life there tooksome getting used to. Thewater supply in Aktau can beunpredictable during the

transitional periods betweenseasons. There were weekswhen Kenneth had to gowithout water supply. He hassince learned to store water– something we take forgranted living in Singapore.

Kenneth has also developedanother unusual habit – hebuys things in bulk. Salariesin Kazakhstan are normallyissued at the end of themonth so supermarkets onlystart displaying their stocksjust before that period.People there bulk buy so ifhe went to the supermarketin the middle of the month, there would be little left onthe shelves.

In spite of these challenges,Kenneth exemplifies Keppel’s

Can Do! spirit by taking themhead on and resolving toovercome them. “I’m willingto try anything! Kazakhstanis a place full of opportunitiesand full of gold,” Kennethenthuses.

For Keppelites thinking ofventuring into Kazakhstan,Kenneth encourages themto go without expectationsand be adaptable, flexibleand patient.

Having returned to Aktauwhen Keppelite last spoketo him, Kenneth’s partingwords showed howKazakhstan has come to behome to him.

“I am back in the worldwhere I belong.” keppelite

Growing up in the easternChinese town of Wenzhou,Cai Wendong would ratherfish than study. Little did heimagine that ten years on, hewould be studying for hisdiploma in Offshore andMarine technology at NgeeAnn Polytechnic in Singaporewhile providing for hisfamily.

His Singapore dream beganin 1998 when he saw anadvertisement for a job inSingapore. Encouraged byhis family and friends, heembarked on a six-hour busride to Shanghai for a jobinterview with KeppelOffshore & Marine. It was ajourney that would land himthousands of miles awayfrom his country to settle inSingapore.

Pursuing the Singapore DreamWendong aced the interviewand was hired on the spot. His interviewer, Ng SiongSeng, Assistant SectionManager at Keppel Shipyardwas impressed withWendong’s dynamism aswell as his intellectdemonstrated through awritten test.

He started out as a pipe fitterin Keppel Shipyard, learningthe ropes from his superiorsand colleagues. He adaptedquickly and his diligence andpotential resulted in hispromotion as Foreman(Piping), this, despite theeconomic downturn of thelate 90s.

On Wendong’s performance,Siong Seng commented,“Wendong is forthcoming

with ideas to solve aproblem. He is always readyto take the lead and hiscolleagues and supervisorsare very impressed with hisdetermination and hardwork.

“That is why we are morethan willing to support himin furthering his studies, fromtaking English courses to theNational Institute of TechnicalEducation Certificate courseand now the three-yearDiploma course in Ngee AnnPolytechnic.”

Wendong, 29, enjoys hiswork at the shipyard. Afterseeing his story appear in theStraits Times (28 April 2007),he says he is proud to be anambassador of Keppel ininspiring others to pursue theSingapore dream.

Working in Keppel’s Tuasshipyard, he enjoys theopportunity to meet peoplefrom all over the world, grow in an internationallyrenowned company andwork on larger than lifestructures. One of theprojects he is presentlyundertaking the conversionof a Floating ProductionStorage and Offloadingvessel (FPSO).

Contrary to popular belief, the shipyard is a very safeplace to work in, he says. Not only does the safeworking environment inspire

Enjoying the view from high

A beautiful island shapedlike a sweet potato. Twoincongruous but truedescriptions of Taiwan. Theold name of Taiwan, Formosacomes from the PortugueseIlha Formosa for ‘beautifulisland’ and if you look at amap of Taiwan with a littleimagination, it does resemblea sweet potato.

It is quite apt too that whenit comes to food, Taiwan canbe paradise. This wasdiscovered by Keppeliteswho joined the KeppelRecreation Club on theTaiwan Trip from 27 April to1 May 2007.

For those planning a trip toTaiwan, the reviews of our

Moving on to Tamsui, a placeknown for fresh seafood, thetown is also home to theLovers’ Bridge which is apopular spot for catching thesunset over the Taiwan Straithorizon.

Another must-visit is theShihlin Night Market whichis renowned for deliciouslocal food. Just to namesome goodies – oyster meesua, big barbequedsausages, bittergourdhoney tea, snowflake ice-cream and you chung bing(Chinese prata).
