Days 2-5 : Optional Serengeti& Ngorongoro

Nairobi - Arusha (Tanzania). Leaving Nairobi wetravel south, crossing the border into Tanzaniaat Namanga. Staying in a lovely campsite inMeserani on the outskirts of Arusha, beforeheading out on our Serengeti and NgorongoroCrater excursion tomorrow.

Days 3 - 5 Optional Ngorongoro Crater &Serengeti Excursion Arusha is a pleasant townsituated at the base of Mount Meru, and isthe starting point for safaris into the Serengeti,Tarangire and Lake Manyara National Parks,and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. In themorning on day 3 we have the opportunityto explore this thriving town while we stockup on provisions needed for our excursion.You may chose to wander the vibrant craftmarkets, stock up on supplies or perhaps catchup on the news back home at one of the smallinternet cafe available. Heading back to ourbase camp, Meserani Snake Park, those thatare participating in the optional excursions toNgorongoro Crater and Serengeti National Parkcan start to prepare for their departure thisafternoon. The excursion is offered by a localTanzanian operator who conducts the trip intothe Parks in 4WD vehicles (In peak season, theremay be a minivan or bus transfer to Karatu),which are adapted for safari use.For those not opting to visit the NgorongoroCrater or Serengeti National Park, the nextdays are spent at leisure enjoying the Meseranireptile park, Masai Cultural Museum andthe surrounding villages and craft markets.Alternatively the town of Arusha is close by toexplore. The driver and cook remain behind inDar es Salaam during the excursion.The Optional Ngorongoro/Serengeti excursiontakes us via the Masai town of Mtu Wa Mbu(Mosquito River) that lies adjacent to the LakeManyara National Park and up the Rift Valley

Escarpment to the higher lying village ofKaratu. Karatu offers magnificent views over thesurrounding hills and has many well establishedwheat farms that add to the picturesquepanoramas. We spend the evening at a pleasantcampsite in Karatu. The following morning wedepart early for the Ngorongoro Conservationarea and head into the wildlife rich NgorongoroCrater. This World Heritage Site boasts some ofthe best game viewing in Africa – including theelusive Black Rhino.After our game drive in the Crater, we continuedown the Crater rim and past the ‘Cradle ofMankind’ on our way to the Serengeti NationalPark. We cross the vast plains as we gamedrive through the southern and central areas inthe park. Tonight we bush camp (no ablutions)in the wild surrounded by the sounds of theAfrican wilderness. In the morning, we headoff for another game drive and explore thelandscape in search of the resident wildlife. Withsome luck, we may see some of Africa’s ‘Big 5’!After our morning drive, we head back acrossthe plains and the lush Crater rim to our truckat Arusha, where we spend the evening musingover our thrilling wildlife experience. Overnight- Karatu & Serengeti (optional) or Arusha (B:3,L:4, D:4)

Day 6 : PanganiArusha - Pangani. Today we head to Arushain the morning to stock up on suppliesbefore continuing on towards Dar es Salaam.On the way we drive through the townof Moshi situated at the magnificent MountKilimanjaro – Africa’s highest mountain. Moshiis the base for Mount Kilimanjaro climbingexpeditions, and weather permitting; we mayeven catch a glimpse of this magical mountain’ssnowy summit - a photo opportunity notto be missed! We pass through vast sisalplantations surrounded by The Usambaraand Pare Mountain ranges, before reachingour lovely campsite nestled between thesemountains, midway between Arusha and Dar esSalaam. Overnight - Pangani (B, L, D)

Day 7 : Dar es SalaamPangani - Dar es Salaam. Today we continueon to Dar es Salaam. Travelling through lushscenery and palm trees, we near the warmIndian Ocean. Today’s drive time is extendeddue to the heavier amount of traffic heading

in to the city, but the sights and sounds ofDar’s vibrant outer suburbs are sure to keep youentertained. Look out for the colourful shop-fronts with their sometimes humorous ‘catchphrases’. On arrival in Dar es Salaam we makeour way to our lovely seaside campsite andprepare for our departure to Zanzibar the nextmorning. Overnight - Dar es Salaam (B, L, D)

Days 8-10 : Zanzibar

Dar es Salaam - Zanzibar (optional). A ferry fromDar es Salaam takes us to the "Spice Island,”where we have the option to spend the next 3nights. Zanzibar is steeped in history and wasone of the major starting points for most EastAfrican explorers in their quest for new lands.New passengers may join us to replace thosethat’ll leave us at the end of our excursion toZanzibar.

PLEASE NOTE: Accommodation and Meals arefor your own account whilst on Zanzibar, asit is our experience that passengers preferto explore the island on their own, andin accordance with their own budget. TheTrip Leader joins you and can arrange youraccommodation, while meals can be enjoyedfrom a wide selection of restaurants. History aside, Zanzibar offers a wealth ofexperiences for the visitor. Today the quietstreets of the old Stone Town still retain theirArabic influence, from the Medina-like shops tothe palaces of the Sultans, who founded theirvast empires on the spoils of the slave and ivorytrade. The island is famous for its spices and anexcursion around a spice plantation is always afascinating experience. or a fishing trip in a traditional dhow. Mopedsare available for hire if you’d like to explore themore remote areas of the island. Zanzibar is aseafood lover’s paradise. Numerous restaurantsoffer a great variety of the freshest catch fromthe ocean - crayfish being a popular speciality.Alternatively, mingle with the locals for dinner atthe Forodhani Gardens seafront market, wheredelicious, inexpensive seafood is on offer.For those not opting to visit the island ofZanzibar, the next 3 days are spent at leisure atthe beach campsite in Dar es Salaam. There arevarious optional excursions available from thecamp including diving, snorkelling and fishingtrips. The driver and cook remain behind in Dares Salaam during the excursion. Overnight -Zanzibar (optional) or Dar Es Salaam (B:1)

Day 11 : Dar es SalaamZanzibar - Dar es Salaam. Leaving Zanzibar inthe afternoon, we return to the mainland andanother night in Dar es Salaam. Arrival back tocamp is usually in the late afternoon, or earlyevening. Overnight - Dar es Salaam (D)

Day 12 : IringaDar es Salaam - Iringa. Today we head south andpass through the Mikumi National Park whereit is possible to view a range of wildlife fromthe roadside, totally impervious to the passingtraffic. We travel towards Iringa where we spendthe night in a beautiful rustic campsite famousfor its Amarula Hot Chocolates and its steamyshowers! Overnight - Iringa (B, L, D)

Days 13-15 : Lake MalawiIringa - Lake Malawi (Malawi). Winding our waythrough the beauty of the Tukuyu tea andbanana plantations, we head towards Malawientering the ‘Warm Heart of Africa’ through theborder post at Songwe. Malawi is a landlockedcountry with 20% of its total area made up ofbeautiful Lake Malawi. We travel the length ofthe western side of the lake, stopping off atvarious bays and inlets over the next 3 days.Spend the days learning the game of bao fromthe locals, scour the markets for a bargain orsimply relax on the pristine beaches. Malawi’stemperate climate allows for swimming in theclear blue fresh-water lake all year round.Explore the beautiful shore where you’ll happenupon the local fishermen sorting their catch.Traditional fishing techniques are still practiced

and to appreciate their boating skills, try topaddle a dugout canoe yourself! At night you’llsee the ‘fairy’ lights of the fishermen outon the lake. The various beachside campsitesalong Lake Malawi’s shores offer many optionalExcursions including a variety of water sports,horseback rides and a visit to the local villageand school (see the optional excursions guideat the end of this document). Overnight - LakeMalawi (B:3, L:3, D:3)

Day 16 : Chipata

Lake Malawi - Chipata. We head away from LakeMalawi, and stop off in the capital, Lilongwe, asmall city distinctively divided into the old townand the new administrative centre, to stock upon supplies before crossing into Zambia wherewe spend the night in a beautiful little campsitejust 10 km after the Malawi/Zambia border.Overnight - Chipata (B, L, D)

Days 17-18 : LuangwaChipata - Luangwa. Today we head towardsSouth Luangwa National Park. This breathtaking park is situated on the Luangwa Riverin the Eastern part of Zambia, and it is thesouthernmost of three national parks in thisregion. South Luangwa was founded in 1938as a game reserve, 1972 was the year it wasdeclared as a national park, and today it coversover 9000 kilometres squared. Animals such asGiraffe, buffalo and Elephants can be found inabundance. The Luangwa river is home to manya hippo and croc.

Leaving the park on day 18 we make our waydown south. As we drive, we pass through afew of the villages and towns of Zambia alongthe way. Prosperous during the copper boom inthe 60’s, Zambia was able to build infrastructureat the main mining and farming communities.After the fall of the copper industry, the

country was left virtually bankrupt and existinginfrastructure was left to fall to ruin. Due toforeign investment and a rise in the miningindustry, Zambia is today once again starting toprosper. Overnight - Luangwa (B:2, L:2, D:2)

Day 19 : LivingstoneLuangwa - Livingstone. Heading further south,we journey through the southern Zambiantowns mostly supporting local agriculture andfarming on our way to Livingstone. TheVictoria Falls or Mosi-oa-Tunya (the Smoke thatThunders) is one of the Seven Natural Wondersof the World and it’s not difficult to see why.At 1700 m wide and around 100 m high, this isthe world's largest sheet of falling water and amemorable sight on any African Safari! The Fallscan be viewed from the Mosi-oa-Tunya NationalPark, Zambia - a fantastic photo opportunity.Tonight we have the option of enjoying asunset dinner cruise on the mighty Zambezi.Overnight - Livingstone (B, L, D)

Day 20 : Chobe National Park

Livingstone - Chobe (Botswana). We leaveZambia and cross the border into Botswana atthe Kazangula Ferry. Once we’ve completed theborder formalities, we continue to the town ofKasane, situated on the banks of the ChobeRiver. The Chobe River forms a border betweenBotswana and Namibia and Zambia and is themain water source to the Chobe National Park.

Later, we leave for our Chobe National ParkOvernight Mobile excursion – an overnightexperience in the wilds of the Chobe Nationalpark. Chobe is one of Botswana’s premier gameparks, renowned for its large elephant herds.Spend the afternoon in search of wildlife whilewe game drive to our camp within the parkwhere we spend the evening surrounded bythe night-time noises of the local wildlife. Lookout for the rare Sable and Roan Antelope on

your game drive, with their majestic backwardslanting horns, or try keep a count of the LilacBreasted Roller’s that swoop by!

Please note: Should we not be able to stay inChobe National Park due to lack of availability atthe bush camp, this excursion will be replacedwith an overnight trip in the bushveld of theLesoma Valley which is situated in the KasaneForest Reserve adjacent to the Chobe NP andthe Matsetsi Game area of Zimbabwe. Lesomais equally rich in wildlife and affords a similarexperience to the above. Overnight - ChobeNational Park (B, L, D)

Day 21 : Victoria FallsChobe - Victoria Falls (Zimbabwe). After ournight in the bush, we head out early to continueour search for wildlife, before packing up thecamp and heading back to Kasane. Once wehave returned to camp, we get back on ourtruck and continue to the border of Zimbabwe.Once we’ve completed border formalities, wehave a short drive to the nearby Victoria Falls.Named after the famous World Heritage siteand Water Falls, the town of Victoria Falls issituated on the Zambezi River and surroundedby the Victoria Falls National Park. Our campsiteis conveniently situated in the centre of town,and within walking distance of the adventurebooking agents, restaurants and shops. A 20minute walk down the main road takes youto the entry point to view the falls, which aresituated between Zimbabwe and Zambia.

After our adventure activities briefing (seeoptional excursions guide at the end of theseTrip Notes), the afternoon is spent relaxing at thecampsite’s swimming pool, viewing the VictoriaFalls, or exploring the many sights and delightsof this town! Overnight - Victoria Falls (L)

Days 22-23 : Victoria Falls

The next 2 days are spent relaxing orparticipating in a myriad of optional excursions.Some of our fellow passengers will leave usin Vic Falls, to be replaced by new passengersjoining us for the next leg of our trek.Optional excursions include elephant backsafaris, horseback safaris, walking with lions, avisit to the crocodile ranch, boat cruises andgolf at The Elephant Hills Resort. Adrenalinjunkies can bungee from the Victoria FallsBridge connecting Zimbabwe and Zambia orabseil down the Batoka Gorge - neither activityis for the faint hearted! All year round, flightsin fixed wing, micro light and ultra light aircraftor helicopters provide an aerial perspectiveover this magnificent World Heritage Site. Whitewater rafting on the Zambezi is world class.Beside the excitement of the Grade 5 rapids,there are the "floats," where there is time toadmire the scenic cliffs and the occasionalwildlife on the riverbanks. Overnight - VictoriaFalls (B:2)

Day 24 : Chobe River CruiseVictoria Falls - Kasane (Botswana). Afterbreakfast we cross the border into Botswana andhead to Kasane where we set up camp on thebanks of the Chobe River. This afternoon we takea boat cruise along the beautiful Chobe River.Elephant, hippo and many bird species can beviewed from the boat while we watch anotherglorious African sunset. Overnight - Kasane (B,L, D)

Day 25 : MaunHeading out early, we cross the western endof the Chobe National Park area along themain route in a south-westerly direction to thesouthern reaches of the Okavango Delta andour destination, Maun. On our route, we haveroutine stops at Botswana’s ‘meat’ borders –check points that were set up to protect itsthriving beef export industry from the spreadof disease. Maun is the starting point for travelinto the Delta and it is from here that we setoff to explore the Okavango Delta. Tonight weprepare our provisions and packs for the 2 nightoptional excursion. We suggest bringing alonga smaller daypack on your trip which can beused to pack the supplies needed for this shortexcursion. Your trip leader will brief you fully on

what is needed, and what to expect prior to yourtrip into the Delta. Overnight - Maun (B, L, D)

Days 26-27 : OptionalOkavango

Maun - Okavango Delta (optional). The Delta is ahuge expanse of water, which has travelled fromthe Angolan highlands, spreading out to formthe largest inland delta in the world. Studdedwith exotic islands, The Delta is renowned for itsincredible variety of bird life and animals and isunique to Southern Africa.Here we have the opportunity to take theoptional 3 Day / 2 Night Drive in MokoroExcursion into the Delta. After an early rise, wepack our expedition vehicle and from Maunwe drive north for a couple of hours to reachthe mokoro poler’s station. The Delta region isstudded with many local villages where manyfamilies live in a traditional way. Some ofthe villages are very remote and can only bereached by the traditional mode of transport– the Mokoro. Mokoros are dugout canoesmanoeuvred through the waterways by localguides who “pole” them through the reeds. Day 29 : PalapyeMaun - Palapye (Zimbabwe). Heading out early,we have a fairly long (450kms) drive todayto the small town of Palapye, situated abouthalfway between Francistown and Gaborone(Botswana’s Capitol). This popular ‘stopover’town for those en route to South Africa,is well known for the Morupule Collierycoal mines which supplies Morupule PowerStation, Botswana’s principal domestic source ofelectricity.Overnight - Palapye (B, L, D)

Day 30 : Blyde River Canyon

Palapye - Blydepoort (South Africa). Thismorning we cross into South Africa, andcontinue across to our camp overlooking theimpressive Blyde River Canyon. Named forthe Blyde River that runs through it, thecanyon is 26km long, and averages 800m

deep and forms the northern edge of theimpressive Drakensberg Mountain Range. Itis classified as a ‘green canyon’ due to theuncommon occurrence of vegetation that linesit (uncommon as most canyons are in desertareas and are fairly barren). The main viewpointsalong the canyon are the 3 Rondavels, namedfor the shape of the traditional huts or housesthe indigenous people of the area used to livein; and Gods Window that affords a breathtakingview across the canyon and surrounding area.Overnight - Blydepoort (B, L, D)

Days 31-32 : Kruger N.P.Included activity: Night Game Drive in Kruger

Heading through the breathtaking PanoramaRoute, we stop off at various viewpointstoday including scenic God’s Window. Wepass through the small town of Graskop, andhead toward the Kruger National Park and ourcampsite on the border of the park. Situated just10km from Kruger’s Phabeni Gate, the camp ishome to Giraffe, Zebra and Hippo to name buta few.The next day we visit the amazing KrugerNational Park in search of some of the 146mammals, 500 bird, 114 reptile, 33 amphibian &49 fish species that make this park their home.We travel in our truck along the main gameviewing routes within the park and stop off atsome of the camps along the way. Transport on TourOur overland vehicles are custom builtconverted Mercedes Benz or MAN trucks thathave seatingspace for our passengers and a storage areas forluggage and all trip equipment. The trucks seatbetween 27-30 passengers on our campingtrips. Most seats are forward facing, thoughsome models have a combination of forward,backward and some inward facing seats withtables. Vehicles have sliding glass windows, andthe seating area is raised providing a greatadvantage for game viewing and photography.Seats are cushioned and there is storage spacefor personal items like cameras, snacks and daypacks in the seating area.

Meals on TourMeals and menus vary as food is purchased en-route, and is subject to produce that is availableseasonally in the areas we travel through. Aswe support the local communities along theway, fresh produce is mostly purchased directfrom the producer or local grower and thereforehas an organic appearance. Our safari cooks areable to offer a wide variety of menus with theingredients available, even if the produce onoffer is not of the same selection as what youmay be used to back home. The breakfast spreadconsists of bread (toast when time allows),spreads and cereals with a hot breakfast everyfew days. Lunches are mostly prepared en-routewith a supply of ‘build your own’ sandwichingredients available. Dinners are cooked in theevenings on arrival at the campsite. A wide arrayof dinner menus are on offer during your safari,consisting of curries, stews, pastas, BBQs andeven roasts!

Participation on TourAll of our overland safaris are participation tripsmeaning that all passengers are expected tohelp out around camp. The crew members

running the trip will set up a rota system that willbe followed. One day you may be on cleaningduty, the next day you may be on cooking dutyand so forth. This is not only to make the tripeasier for all involved but also for you as thepassengers to get to know one another while ontrip.

ClimateKenya is an excellent year round destinationwith a favourable climate and reasonably lowrainfall. In general the hottest months areDecember to March, although the climate variesenormously from place to place. The lowlandcoastal areas are tropical, with year roundhigh temperatures and humidity, which is atits peak in April and May, although temperedby monsoon winds. The highlands are moretemperate with four seasons. Nairobi has a verypleasant climate throughout the year due to itsaltitude. Near Lake Victoria, the temperaturesare much higher and rainfall can be heavy.

Exchange ratesvary depending upon the denomination of thenote that you want to change and generallysmaller notes attract a lower exchange ratethan high ones. Be aware that old pre-2003US$ banknotes or torn or marked banknotesare difficult to exchange in Africa so make sureyou take crisp new notes. If you are subject to visa requirements, youmust apply and receive your visa before yourdeparture for South Africa, visas are not issuedat South African ports of entry.

Travelling with Children to orthrough South AfricaFrom 1 June 2015 parents travelling withchildren into or out of South Africa, or transitingin South Africa will be asked to show the child’sunabridged (full) birth certificate which liststhe child’s details and both parents’ details.The abridged (short) birth certificate which

only lists the child’s details won’t be accepted.Uncertified copies of birth certificates or copiesof the parents/guardians identification will notbe accepted. A parental contact affidavit (PCA)must have a certified copy of the parent’s/guardian’s identification (ie passport) attachedto it.

Where only one parent is accompanying a child,parental or legal consent for the child to travel(eg an affidavit from the other parent or –if applicable – a death certificate) is requiredand there are other requirements for childrentravelling unaccompanied or with adults whoare not their parents.

If you are travelling with children (under18) it is essential that you contact theSouth African High Commission or the SouthAfrican Department of Home Affairs for furtherinformation relating to these regulations. Health & VaccinationsYou should seek medical advice beforetravelling to South Africa from your local healthpractitioner and ensure that all you receiveall of the appropriate vaccinations. CurrencyThe currency in South Africa is Rand (ZAR;symbol R)1 Rand = 100 cents. Notes are in denominationsof R200, 100, 50, 20 and 10. Coins are indenominations of R5, 2 and 1, and 50, 20, 10 and5 cents.

Obtaining local currency within South Africa isvery easy. ATMs are widely accessible and veryreliable and offer the best rates of exchange.International credit cards are accepted in almostall shops, restaurants, hotels and game reserves.

Bureau de changes offer a quick andcommission free service but are only foundin the main centres such as Cape Townand Johannesburg. Travellers cheques can bechanged at banks. These should be in US Dollarsor Pound Sterling to avoid additional exchangerate charges.
