Cuba
Following up on its earlier announce-ment that effective May 1, all visitors to Cuba will be required to have medical
insurance, the Travel Health Insurance Asso-ciation (THIA) has received confirmation from the Government of Cuba Tourism Bureau that Cuban authorities will accept either provin-cial government health insurance cards, or proof of private travel insurance, as sufficient to meet this requirement. Those without such proof will be required to buy insurance from Cuban companies at ports of entry. The tourism bureau confirmed that the Cuban Government is aware that most pro-vincial health insurance plans, such as OHIP or RAMQ, do not provide direct coverage for out-of-country emergency medical services, and that visitors carrying only provincial government health insurance cards would be required to pay Cuban hospitals, clinics, doctors and other providers in full, at the time of treatment. They would then have to file for reimbursement with their provincial plans and they could expect only a small portion of their claims to be paid. THIA reminds Canadi-ans that reimbursements for out-of-country hospital and medical services are based on rates pre-determined in each province and normally cover only a fraction of the charges travellers are required to pay. “The announcement that Cuba would accept provincial health insurance cards as proof of insurance has prompted some of Canada’s vacation and tourism operators to imply that additional travel health insurance was not mandatory for meeting the May 1 medical coverage requirement; which may technically be correct,” says Martha Turn-bull, president of THIA. “However, some of these announcements have left the mistaken impression that provincial government health insurance will cover the cost of emergency medical services in Cuba, which could result in travellers having to pay out of pocket. Such an impression provides a disservice to Canadian travellers, who may end up with significant unexpected costs,” she adds.H

First things first. Turn to your diary and block a date and time for me. June 11, 2010 at 11 a.m. Excellent. On that date, at that time you’ll be attending a FREE Canadian Traveller we-binar featuring How To Sell Kenya where I’ll present dozens more tips, tools and techniques to help you start selling, or sell more, Kenya. This How To Sell article and A Canadian’s Guide To Kenya will be your workbook for the webinar.
The webinar will run for 60 minutes. It will be packed with marketing tips, tools and techniques specific to market-ing Kenya to your existing clients, prospecting for groups
and attracting meetings & incentives from your corporate accounts. You’ll find out how to use traditional, online, digital and social networking tools to generate bookings to Kenya. I’ll introduce you to some wonderful low-to-no-cost tools such as mini-websites for just this Kenya promotion. We’ll talk about new and exciting ways to get noticed such as green screen technology, podcasts, YouTube, webinar platforms and we’ll show you how you can get between your client and their media. Make sure you have a note pad, pen and highlighter at your fingertips.

in search of undiscovered secrets. I’d suggest this is for your well-travelled clients versus your typical tourist.
Your Next StepYour customer profiles will run from dare-devils to golfers, to birders to hikers and how could anyone visit Kenya and not go on safari? So that’s a must isn’t it? And it’s probably the best word to use in your mar-probably the best word to use in your mar-probably the best word to use in your marketing to attract attention to your promo-tion. Your next step then is to “package” the word safari into every flyer, e-mail, direct mail and on your website, too. Let’s explore how you can package a safari.
Safari And…A safari is a standalone experience and it can also be packaged to suit your client’s core interest. This means you can add
golf, photography, scuba diving or trek-trek-trekking to your safari-based package. There are suppliers who already offer the Golf Safari so there’s no work to do other than to market it and close the sale. You could sell from those preferred brochures on your brochure rack, and/or you could also work with the Kenya Tourist Board team to create your own programs that tick all the boxes for your clients and specifically groups of like-minded/same interest peo-ple. One more concept – you could discuss a co-branded or branded tour with your preferred supplier and tweak a ready-made tour to suit your group’s needs.
Pictures Are Worth 1,000 Words An old quote that bodes well for this type of tour. You could write reams of text to
explain this and that and give 100 rea-sons as to why every one of your clients should join your tour to Kenya. Or, you could use one image, add a catchy slogan and a tag line that pushes the reader into action. Which image will it be? Surveys say that an image of a lion roars the loudest when marketing Kenya. Using an image of a warthog…not so much! Hyena? Nope. Stick to the Big 5. The Big 5 are the animals everyone wants to see…lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino. Using an image of all five or the first two, should grab attention. One of the most beautiful, attractive and, I could say, magical portraits of a lion I’ve found can be seen here: www.edmclion.com/images/Aslan_410.jpg. You can also visit the Magical Kenya photo galleries on flickr – right here: www.flickr.com/

Father’s Day will be 100 years old on June 20, and Sonora Smart Dodd, a
Spokane, Washington, woman is credited with being the founder of the
annual celebration. Often referred to as the “Mother of Father’s Day,”
she heard a Mother’s Day sermon at Central United Methodist Church in Spokane, 1909 and was inspired to propose that Father’s receive equal
recognition. The following year June 19, 1910, was designated as the first
Father’s Day, and today Father’s Day is celebrated from Antigua to
Zimbabwe in more than 50 countries around the world.
Commemorative activities include tours, art exhibits, concerts and river adventures. Go to www.VisitSpokane.
