PLOT and SAMPLING DESIGN: • 1,000 m2 plot area with a 17.85m plot radius• Measure DBH only of all trees in plot and record species• Intensive wood density sampling of 10 trees within plot• 2 trees nearest plot center and nearest the center of each quadrant

• Tree measurements: DBH, total height, crown height, 2 crown diameters, species• Wood density: • 3 sound measurements along 2 axis (N/S & E/W) • 2 increment cores at N/S & E/W axis

• Photographs: • hemispherical photo at ½ crown radius on north side of each intensive tree• horizontal GPS photos from plot center in 4 cardinal directions

All plots are in known age KFS plantations near the Kirbiri Forest Station.Plots took 2-3 hours to collect the more intensive wood density parameters. The Kaimosi Tea Estate denied our impromptu request to collect data on their property. We sought and found alternate hardwoods in new locations within the Kibiri Forest.7 of the 11 plots are within our July 2010 Worldview imagery.

Nairobi Meetings Nov 14-15

• KWS – Jane Wamboi was out of town and missed our meeting

• Meteorology – much trouble buying 10 years of climate data at 5 stations for 5,000 KSH. Prior letter required.

• USAID – met with Enock Kanyanya to discuss the PROMARA project in the Mau Forest

• KFS – met with Alfred Gichu to update him on the SERVIR proposal

• UNEP – met with Gemma Shepherd and Mohamad Sessay to debrief the Annual Review and UNCCD meetings

• KEFRI – did not meet with Vincent Oeba as he was at MSU in October

• SERVIR – did not stop by as we are waiting on the proposal

• ICRAF – spoke briefly with Henry Neufeldt in Kisumu on the 14th
