PIPER QUICKEST INTO MANDURAH CUP FINALSunset Piper is the fastest qualifier for this Friday night’s Group 3 Mandurah Cup (490m) after scorching around the Peel circuit to win by more than six lengths in 27.29 last weekend.

The classy David Hobby-trained chaser has now won four of her past six starts.

All Zipped Up won the opening heat in smart fashion when he held off the strong finishing Quartararo to score in 27.37.

Unfortunately All Zipped Up pulled up sore after the race and has been withdrawn from the final.

Serong booked his place into another final after he emerged victorious from the most cut-throat heat of the night.

The talented black chaser from Paul Stuart’s kennels pushed to the front as they approached the turn and then kicked away to charge across the finish line more than four lengths ahead in 27.53.

Jimmy’s Decision overcame interference in the home straight to win his heat in 27.53.

In the final heat Jackson County conceded the lead to Sleepy George in the back straight but then powered over the top in the concluding stages to win by two lengths in 27.64.

Lily or Lilly? Or both?

Rhonda Lily and Lakeview Lilly took the honours in the heats of the Distance Potential at Cannington last Saturday.

Rhonda Lily scored her third win from her past four starts for trainer Krystal Shinners with victory over runner-up Low Blow in 35.17.

In the following heat Lakeview Lilly edged ahead of Stone Cold Olly at the business end of the race to score in 35.06.

A celebration of Ray’s life will be held in Box 1 Restaurant on Sunday 10 October, commencing at 11:00am.Staff and industry participants are all welcome to meet with his family and other friends, on that day.

Just as a reminder, greyhounds can only be booked in when they are ready to retire (via a race name or ear brands). We will be contacting all trainers to ask for race names/ear brands for any spots currently booked and these will need to be provided to keep that booking.

Please note the Scratching closing time for Mondays in October is being adjusted to 8:30am.

This is due to these meetings starting earlier at around 12:30pm because of daylight savings.

GRADE 5 SERIES FOR CITY MIDDLE DISTANCE GREYHOUNDS

A City Middle Distance Grade 5 series over 600m has been scheduled with the heats on October 23 and the Final on October 30.

2 heats are required for the series to go ahead.

The winner of the final on 30/10/21 will gain automatic entry into the Canning Show Cup.

NORTHAM FEATURE RACES UPDATE

As previously communicated via text message and direct email communication, the October and November race programmes do not contain Northam race dates.

Two of the scheduled Northam Feature Race events will be transferred to Cannington. These being the Dale Cup which will be run as a Heat and Final series on October 18 & 25 and the WA Bred Country Cup which will be run as a One-Off Final on November 1.

GREYHOUND INJURY FULL RECOVERY SCHEME (GIFRS)Under GIFRS the ownership of a greyhound sustaining an eligible injury at a race meeting is transferred to RWWA’s Greyhounds as Pets (GAP) program, following which the injured greyhound is transported to emergency care and all associated costs of surgery and rehabilitation are covered by RWWA. If suitable, the greyhound will then be rehomed post recovery through GAP’s standard processes.

This scheme complements the Greyhound Injury Surgery Rebate (GISR), where RWWA offers a financial contribution, for eligible cases, to help the trainer and owner pay for the costs of veterinary care.

TRAINEE LURE DRIVER INCENTIVE SCHEME - MANDURAH MONDAY

Greyhounds WA requires assistance from industry to increase our Qualified Lure Driver pool.

As an incentive to utilise the trainee lure driver, Greyhounds WA will provide a $10 incentive to trainers for each trial conducted utilising the trainee lure driver.

The payment will be made to your nominated bank account the following Friday.

Trainee Driver Earl is a former Lure Driver who is returning to the role.

THE DOGS WA PHOENIX SLOT CONDITIONS OF ENTRY

ROAD TO THE FINAL 8 QUALIFIERS

Final 8 qualifiers to be made up of:

All Stars Leg 1st & 2nd

Young Stars Leg 1st & 2nd

Best 32 Leg 4x 1st

ALL STARS LEG

• The All Stars Final needs to be declared a race, if a no race is declared then no qualifiers will progress.

• If there is a dead heat for 1st both runners will progress to become qualifiers. • If there is a dead heat for 2nd, a ballot will be conducted to determine the second qualifier. • Any other dead heat combination will result in ballots to determine the 2 qualifiers that

progress from the All Stars leg.

YOUNG STARS LEG

• The Young Stars Final needs to be declared a race, if a no race is declared then no qualifiers will progress.

• If there is a dead heat for 1st both runners will progress to become qualifiers. • If there is a dead heat for 2nd, a ballot will be conducted to determine the second qualifier. • Any other dead heat combination will result in ballots to determine the 2 qualifiers that

progress from the Young Stars leg. • Qualifiers from the All Stars Leg are eligible to compete in the Young Stars series. • If an already qualified greyhound from the All Stars Leg also becomes one of the 2 qualifiers

from the Young Stars Leg (1st or 2nd across the line), no extra greyhounds will be sourced from the Young Stars Leg and any additional qualifiers will be determined in the Best 32 Leg.

BEST 32 LEG

• The final qualifiers will be determined from the Best 32 Leg. • A maximum of 32 greyhounds will be drawn, with a further 8 non seeded reserves. • The 32 greyhounds plus 8 reserves will be selected by a Grading Panel. • The Top 25% will be seeded as per the RWWA Racing Aims and Grading Policy. • Standard Guarding and Heat allocation will be applied. • If only 4 qualifiers are required at this stage of the series, the 4 winners will progress. • If more qualifiers are required, then the fastest 2nds, fastest 3rds and so on will be selected

until the Final 8 qualifiers are determined. • Two seeded reserves will also be determined that will progress.

• Standard dead heat rules apply, ballots will be used if required to determine the Final 8 qualifiers.

• Already qualified greyhounds can still compete in the Best 32 Leg.

FINAL 8 QUALIFIERS

• The Final 8 qualifiers will be split into 2 fields of 4 runners plus seeded reserves. • The Top 25% (2 runners) will be seeded, these 2 runners will be determined by a Grading

Panel. • Standard Guarding and Heat allocation will be applied. • The winner of each race will progress to the Match Race. • In the event of a dead heat, a ballot will be conducted to determine which runner will

progress. • The fastest 2nd will be the seeded Reserve 1 in the Match Race, the slowest 2nd will be

seeded Reserve 2 in the Match Race.

MATCH RACE

• The winner of the Match Race will be The Dogs WA slot holder in the Phoenix, to be held at The Meadows on Saturday 18 December 2021.

• In the event of a dead heat or a no race being declared a ballot will be conducted to determine which greyhound will progress.

• The loser of the Match Race will be eligible to take the slot should the winner be unable to fulfill its commitment to compete, up until the final field of the Phoenix is released on Friday 10 December 2021.

GENERAL CONDITIONS

• The onus is entirely upon the connections of the greyhound to be aware of the conditions of entry that apply to this event and the lodgement of a nomination, by any method approved by RWWA, indicates full acceptance of the conditions of entry.

• Travel arrangements will be solely the responsibility of the connections of the greyhound that wins the Dogs WA Phoenix slot.

• The slot cannot be sold or transferred. • Should the winner or runner up of the match race be unable to compete in the Phoenix,

RWWA reserves the right to select a replacement slot holder. • All stakemoney won in the Phoenix will be paid to the owner(s) of the greyhound that wins

the Dogs WA Phoenix slot. • The owner or the registered lessee and trainer of the greyhound nominated for this feature

event must be holders of current Registration Certificates issued by the Authority or an approved registration authority controlling body as defined in the RWWA Rules of Greyhound Racing.

• The nominator hereby certifies that they are a registered person with the Authority, or an approved registration authority as defined in the RWWA Rules of Greyhound Racing. Furthermore the nominator certifies that they are the registered owner or trainer of this greyhound, or person authorised by the Stewards to nominate this greyhound, and assume full responsibility for the correctness of the particulars in this nomination.

• RWWA reserves the right to add, delete or amend any of the conditions of the series should it be necessary to do so notwithstanding the conditions herein contained.

Norethisterone for the control of oestrus in females to be introduced as an exempted substance into the Greyhounds Australasia Rules Notice to trainers – Norethisterone usage in greyhounds

On 1 March 2018, Greyhounds Australasia will introduce norethisterone to the list of

Exempted Substances within GAR 1 Definitions as follows:

“Ethyloestrenol or norethisterone when administered orally to a female greyhound

and where it has been prescribed by a veterinary surgeon for the sole purpose of

regulating or preventing oestrus in that female greyhound.”

Female greyhounds are unable to race whilst in season, which can occur up to twice a

year and reduce their available racing career. Since the introduction of a ban on

previously used anabolic androgenic steroids (AAS), oestrus control has been limited

to the use of ethyloestrenol. Following a review, including research with The

University of Nottingham and the Greyhound Board of Great Britain where

norethisterone is used successfully, Greyhounds Australasia has agreed to allow

norethisterone as an alternative non-AAS means of postponing oestrus in females.

Participants are encouraged to discuss with their veterinarian the options available for

regulating or preventing oestrus in their greyhounds in order to make an informed

decision. Options available include no treatment (allow natural cycling), spaying

(permanent surgical option), or medication with ethyloestrenol or norethisterone.

Norethisterone is a synthetic form of progesterone and belongs to a class of drugs

known as progestins, and is commonly used in human contraceptive pills. Progestins

prevent oestrus by inhibiting the hormone that causes ovulation i.e. they act on the

pituitary gland to reduce its responsiveness to gonadotrophin releasing hormone

(GnRH) and blocking the effect of oestradiol on GnRH receptor expression. This

leads to a suppression of reproductive cyclicity and prevents oestrus.

From a survey of UK trainers, norethisterone effectively and temporarily postpones

oestrus in most females, but some side effects were reported including frequent

urination, clitoral enlargement or a behaviour change. A separate review of

performance data found that greyhounds performed up to one length slower if treated

with norethisterone. These are similar to those side effects reported when using

ethyloestrenol and were less likely at decreased doses (2.5mg/day compared to

5mg/day). The performance decrease found is similar to that seen when progesterone

is naturally elevated during a normal oestrus cycle.

There are two products that are registered with the Therapeutic Goods Administration

(TGA) that contain only norethisterone - Primolut N™ and Noriday 28 Day™. Given

the low dose contained in the latter product, Primolut N™ is likely to be an easier and

more economic method of controlling oestrus for trainers. The cost per day of ½ - 1

tablet once daily of Primolut N is similar to ethyloestrenol at 45 - 90 cents.

Many products contain norethisterone in combination with other substances (e.g.

ethinylestradiol - an oestrogen not to be confused with ethyloestrenol) - these

additional substances are not exempted from being a prohibited substance and can

cause a positive swab. Trainers administering these combination products do so at

their own risk.

There are no longer any Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority

(APVMA) registered products containing ethyloestrenol available in Australia. There

is however one product containing ethyloestrenol (Orabolin) which has been

produced under APVMA permit for several years. Until a fully registered product

returns to the market, the reliable ongoing supply of ethyloestrenol may be at risk.

Like ethyloestrenol, norethisterone must only be used for the purposes of regulating

or preventing oestrus and can only be prescribed by a registered Veterinary Surgeon

to an animal under his or her care after establishing a therapeutic need for that

substance. That veterinary surgeon would be prescribing the product ‘off-label’ as

neither substance is registered for the control of oestrus in canines. The product must

be labelled in accordance with regulatory legalisation.

As both exempted substances are a Schedule 4 (Prescription Only) substance,

trainers are reminded of their obligations under GAR 83A Raceday Treatment (i.e.

do not administer on the day of an event until home after racing) and under GAR

84A Treatment Records (i.e. record administrations to each greyhound in their

treatment book).
