Principal’s Message

We have had a great start to the new school year thanks to all of the hard work of our teachers and staff! We are striving to maintain and improve positive and caring Kennedy community. As we know, the better the school climate, the stronger the student motivation which positively affects student learning. I have many goals for this school year to make Kennedy the best school possible for your child. I will be working with the teachers to make sure your child has high quality and rigorous instruction that prepares them for success in high school. We will also continue to maintain a safe and secure campus and a welcoming and caring learning environment. Finally, we need more parent involvement at Kennedy. Please try to attend one of the PTA/Site Council/ELAC meetings this year or contact the school to see if there is a way to become involved. Research has demonstrated that the more parents are involved with their children's schools, the better the students do academically and socially. I really appreciate everyone's patience with the budget cuts and the need to adjust to 6 periods with the Physical Education and Exploratory classes going to an "A day"/" B day" alternating schedule. So far, the adjustments have worked out well, but there are less options for the Exploratory program. On the positive side, the classes are longer by seven minutes from 48 to 55 minutes on regular days and eight minutes longer on minimum days from 36 to 44 minutes. The Physical Education and Exploratory Classes are now mostly by grade level: 6th grade out at 1st and 2nd periods; 7th grade out at 3rd and 4th periods, and 8th grade out at 5th and 6th periods. We believe that these groupings really benefit the children as there are different developmental needs at each grade level. There is also less movement of students between classes as there is one less period. However, there are more students in the classrooms and the teachers have had to make the adjustment. I am confident that we will continue to provide the strong middle school program that prepares students for success in high school and into adulthood. A number of you have been asking about Swine Flu (H1/N1 Virus) prevention. We have been instructing the students to wash their hands, cough into the elbow, and to stay home from school if they are experiencing flulike symptoms (especially high fever). Teachers have also been given a lesson plan that is to be taught about Swine Flu to further educate our students as a way of preventing the spread of the virus at our school. The Citizen Schools program has started off the school year strong with lots of students, great energy, and big plans. Citizen School’s students will be focusing on academic success, building leadership and oral communication skills, and making connections between what they’re learning in school to real-life careers. Parent Information

We have had several students arriving at school before 8:00 AM. Unless your child has an appointment with a teacher, there is no supervision on campus until 8:00 AM. Please refrain from dropping them off before the scheduled time. Students are also not to loiter on campus after 3:15 PM. Only students who are enrolled in an afterschool program are allowed to remain on campus. Thank you for your cooperation.

Mensaje del Director ¡El inicio del curso escolar ha sido fantástico gracias al trabajo de nuestros maestros y de todo nuestro plantel! Nos esforzamos por mantener y mejorar un ambiente positivo lleno de afecto en nuestra comunidad de Kennedy. Cuanto mejor sea el ambiente en la escuela, mas fuerte será la motivación de los estudiantes y también su aprendizaje. Este año tengo numerosos objetivos para lograr que Kennedy sea la mejor escuela posible para su hijo/a. Trabajare con los maestro para asegurarme de que su hijo/a reciba un educación rigurosa y de alta calidad que le permita estar listo/a para la preparatoria seguiremos manteniendo un campus escolar seguro y un ambiente de aprendizaje lleno de atención y afecto donde cada estudiante se sienta bienvenido. Finalmente, necesitamos que las familias se involucren mas en Kennedy. Por favor, trate de asistir a alguna de las juntas del concilio escolar, del PTA (Asociación de Padres y Maestros) o de ELAC y contáctese con nosotros si desea involucrarse. Los estudios demuestran que cuanto mas involucradas estén las familias mejor rendimiento académico y social demuestran los estudiantes. Agradezco la paciencia que han tenido todos con los recortes presupuestarios y con el ajuste a 6 periodos de los que Educación Física (PE) y las asignaturas optativas han quedado en días alternos, A y B. Hasta ahora, los ajustes realizados han funcionado bien pero hay menos opciones en el programa de asignaturas optativas. Un aspecto positivo es que las clases han pasado a ser de 55 minutos mientras que anteriormente duraban 48 minutos. En los días mínimos los periodos han pasado de 36 a 44 minutos. Ahora las clases de Educación Física (PE) y las optativas están básicamente organizadas por nivel de grado: 6° grado las tiene en los periodos 1 y 2; 7°grado las tiene en los periodos 3 y 4; 8° grado las tiene 5 y 6. Creemos que estas agrupaciones benefician a los estudiantes ya que hay diferentes necesidades de desarrollo en cada grado. Hay menos movimiento de estudiantes y hay un periodo menos. Sin embargo, hay mas estudiantes en las clases y los maestros han tenido que adaptarse. Confió en que podremos continuar un programa de Secundaria que prepare a los estudiantes para tener éxito en la preparatoria y también para su vida adulta. Algunos de ustedes han solicitado información sobre como prevenir la peste porcina (H1/N1). Hemos enseñado a los estudiantes como deben lavarse las mano, a estornudar sobre su codo si no tienen pañuelo de papel y hemos pedido que permanezcan en casa si experimentan síntomas gripales (especialmente fiebre alta). Los maestros han recibido el plan para dar una lección a los estudiantes sobre como prevenir el contagio y la expansión de la enfermedad en la escuela. Noticias del programa Citizen School’s

El programa Citizen’s School ha empezado el año escolar con muchos estudiantes, lleno de energía y con numerosos planes. Los estudiantes se enfocaran en el éxito académico, la creación de liderazgo, las habilidades de comunicación oral y establecer conexiones entre lo que aprenden en la escuela y la vida real. Los talleres empezaran pronto, así pues, inscríbase lo antes posible. Información para los Padres

Hay bastantes estudiantes que llegan antes de las 8 am. A menos que su hijo/a tenga una cita con un maestro/a, no hay supervision en el campus hasta la 8 am. Por favor evite traer a sus hijos/as antes de las 8 am. Asi mismo, los estudiantes no deben merodear por el campus despues de las 3:15pm. I often have parents questioning about the best way to "handle" and or help their teenage child. Recently, I read through Raleigh Philp's book, “Engaging 'Tweens and Teens: A Brain- Compatible Approach to Reaching Middle and High School Students”, and found a lot of good information I would like to share. Philp points to research showing that teenage brains don't function the way adult ones do. (See a good introduction to scientific studies on teenage brains on the Web site for the PBS program Frontline.) The neocortex -- the part of the human brain responsible for language, planning, empathy, and executive functions -- hasn't fully developed inside the average 13-year-old's head. The teenager still relies on a more reactive, gut-instinct part of the brain, the amygdala, which handles emotions and memories associated with emotion. He notes that teenagers also aren't very good at reading emotion on others' faces. In addition to the obvious physical signs of adolescence, teens and 'tweens are undergoing a major neurological overhaul, which is why that perennial teen mumble "I don't know" may be closer to the truth than we'd realized. What this means for teachers and parents, says Philp, is that they must be both patient and persistent. The point at which teenagers tend to withdraw and ask to be left alone is exactly when it's most important to engage them. "We've made some assumptions about the teenage brain, but we're looking at a tremendous curve here; I'm amazed at how many kids function awfully well and do use pretty good judgment. And one has to look at it and ask, 'OK, is that environmentally controlled? Is it something we can instill in others?' That's the encouraging part of this research. We're beginning to realize that, experientially, the brain is really influenced by its environment. At about age 12, 13, 14, the brain goes through a major pruning, much as it did around age two or three. Many of the neurons have two choices, if you will: They can develop into a neural network threaded together as a result of experience, or they're pruned away. So, in other words, if you develop a skill at a young age, you're likely to retain that ability, whereas if you don't, that skill may be much harder to develop. Yes. Unless teenagers put together those neural networks, they may never develop successful relationships with academics, with skills of all sorts. So, if the kid is sitting in front of a TV all day and not getting

experiences, acquiring skills, we have a more serious problem than anyone had realized. Probably, we've only started to realize this in the last seven or eight years. That suggests that we need to engage teenagers, not just let them grow up on their own. Often, we let them go and we don't want anything to do with them. But what we've known for a long time is that if we let kids do their own things, they'll first seek out other adult role models, but if those are not available for them, they'll seek out teen role models And this is the time when, characteristically, we've given up. Parents don't attend middle school and high school events like they did in elementary school. Kids want their privacy, and a lot of parents capitulate to that. And we're looking at probably the most important developmental time for the brain" In summation, engage and speak with your teenager, even if they want to be left alone, and also be patient and persistent.

-Second Harvest Food Distribution-

News flash from the Kennedy Family Center!!!! Thank you to the volunteers of our first, Second Harvest free food distribution last week. We served over 75 families with free, fresh vegetables and fruits. More than 14 parents volunteered for two hours helping, sorting, arranging and distributing food. Families came from Ford, Hawes, Adelante, Kennedy and Roosevelt. Next distribution date is Thursday, October 15th from 2 – 3 PM. If you know of any family that can benefit from the food distribution, have them sign up by visiting the Kennedy Family Center three days before the distribution date. Baile de Octubre

Mensaje del Director Con frecuencia los padres y madres de los estudiantes me preguntan cómo pueden ayudar a su hijo adolescente. Recientemente he leído el libro Tweens and Teens- A Bran Compatible Approach to Reaching Middle and High School Students y he hallado información que desearía compartir con ustedes. Philp muestra una investigación que indica que los cerebros adolescentes no funcionan como los de los adultos. Puede ver una buena introducción a los estudios científicos sobre los cerebros adolescentes en el programa Frontline que hallarán en la red. En el neocórtex – la parte del cerebro responsable del lenguaje de planificar, de la empatía y de las funciones ejecutivas –no se ha desarrollado plenamente en una cabeza de 13 años de edad. El cerebro adolescente confía en la amígdala, una parte más basada en los instintos y en la capacidad de reacción y que maneja las emociones y los recuerdos asociados con la emoción. Los adolescentes tienen dificultades para interpretar la emociones en las caras de otros seres humanos. Además de los obvios cambios físicos, los adolescentes experimentan también un gran cambio neurológico. Por esa razón cuando nos responden “Yo no sé” están diciendo la verdad. Los docentes y los familiares deben ser perseverantes. Es importante motivar a los adolescentes, especialmente, si están a punto de desanimarse o si nos dicen que los que los dejemos en paz. Hemos desarrollado prejuicios sobre el cerebro infantil pero lo cierto es que sorprende lo bien que funcionan los adolescentes y lo bien que pueden usar su juicio. Uno debe observar y preguntarse: ¿Es algo que está controlado por el entorno? ¿Es algo que nosotros podemos inculcar? Este es un aspecto muy interesante de esta investigación. Nos empezamos a dar cuenta de que el cerebro está muy influenciado por el entorno. A la edad de 12,13 y 14 años el cerebro experimenta un gran “recorte” como el que experimentó a los 2 o 3 años de edad. Muchas de nuestras neuronas tienen dos opciones: o bien desarrollan una red neuronal como resultado de la experiencia, o bien son desechadas. Así pues, en otras palabras, si desarrollamos una habilidad en una edad temprana tenemos más posibilidades de retenerla para siempre. Por el contrario, si no la desarrollamos a una edad temprana, será más difícil desarrollarla en el futuro. Si los adolescentes no desarrollan esas redes neuronales es probable que nunca tengan una relación cómoda con ciertos tipos de habilidades o destrezas. Si un niño está



sentado frente al televisor todo el día en vez de estar adquiriendo habilidades, tendremos un problema más difícil de lo que hubiéramos podido imaginar. Sólo nos hemos empezado a dar cuenta de esto en los ultimos siete u ocho años. Debemos motivar a los adolescentes y no sólo dejar que ellos simplemente crezcan. Con frecuencia les dejamos ir y no deseamos relacionarnos con ellos. Ese suele ser el momento en que hemos dado la situación por perdida. Las familias no asisten tanto a los eventos organizados por la escuela secundaria, aunque si asisten a los organizados por la escuela primaria. Los adolescentes quieren su privacidad y muchos padres capitulan frente a eso. Estamos viendo la etapa de desarrollo que probablemente es más importante para el cerebro.

¡¡¡¡Flash Informativo del Centro Comunitario de Kennedy!!!! Les agradecemos a los voluntarios de nuestra primera Segunda Cosecha, distribución de comida gratuita las semana pasada. Servimos a más de 75 familias con frutas y vegetales frescos. Más de 14 padres voluntariamente nos ayudaron por dos horas a sortear, acomodar y distribuir comida. Asistieron algunas familias que tienen estudiantes en Ford, Hawes, Adelante, Kennedy y Roosevelt. La próxima distribución será el Jueves, 15 de Octubre de 2-3 p.m. Si conoce alguna familia que se pueda beneficiar de esta distribución de comida, necesitan ir al Centro Comunitario de Kennedy tres días antes de la fecha de distribución. Second Harvest

Second Harvest will have a free food distribution of "Fruits and Vegetables" at Kennedy Middle School on Thursday, November 19, 2009 from 2 – 3 PM. There will be other dates for food distribution every month. If you know of any family or any body that can benefit from the food distribution, please have them sign up at the Kennedy Family Center with Veronica as soon as possible.




Believe it or not, this Friday marks the end of the 1st Quarter of the year! You will receive your child's first report card at the Parent Teacher conferences set up for the week of November 16th. The majority of the teachers have established "drop in", "first come- first serve" conferences and a few have set up individual conference times. Please remember that these will be quick 10-15 minute conferences as there is very little time allotted for an in depth meeting on each child. The overall Grade Point Average (GPA) is utilized to calculate the Honor Roll with the Academic Honor Roll requiring at least a 3.25 to a 3.74 GPA and the Principal's Honor Roll requires that the student be working at or above grade level and at least a 3.75 to 4.0 GPA. At the end of the school year in June, there is an Honor's Night ceremony for the students and families who have made the Honor Roll two of the first three Quarters. Students will receive a Presidential Diploma, an Honor Roll T-shirt and a bumper sticker at Honor's Night. It is important to maintain good grades for a number of reasons at Kennedy. Students must maintain at least a 2.0 overall GPA to be able to participate in extracurricular activities, e.g; Grease, Sports, and Student Council. Grades are one of the determining factors in selection of students for the school's annual Grand Canyon Trip. Also, it is important to note that 8th graders who have a very low GPA and a number of F grades will not be able to participate in the End of the Year Activities and Graduation Ceremony. If your child did not have a very good report card 1st Quarter, encourage them to learn from their mistakes and that it is never too late to get back on the right track!

Mensaje del Director ¡Lo creamos o no este viernes es el ultimo día del primer cuatrimestre! Usted recibirá el boletín de grados de su hijo/a durante las conferencias con los maestros que ser iniciaran el 16 de noviembre. La mayoría de los maestros atenderán a las familias conforme vayan llegando. Solo un numero reducido de maestros he establecido un horario para sus conferencias. Por favor, recuerde que estas juntas duraran solo de 10 a 15 minutos. . El premio a los grados o GPA (Overall Grade Point Average) se utiliza para seleccionar a los estudiantes que formarán parte de la Lista de Honor Académico que requiere un promedio de 3.25 a 3.74. Para formar parte de la Lista de Honor del Directo el estudiante deberá demostrar un rendimiento académico a nivel de grado o superior al nivel de grado y, además, su promedio en el GPA deberá ser de 3.75 a 4.0. En el mes de junio cuando termina el año escolar hay una ceremonia especial, la Noche de Honores, para los estudiantes que hayan estado en la lista de Honores por lo menos en dos de los tres primeros cuatrimestres. Se invita a las familias de los estudiantes y estos reciben un Diploma Presidencial, una camiseta y una calcomanía para el carro. Es importante que los estudiantes mantengan buenos grados en Kennedy. Para participar en actividades extracurriculares como Grease, deportes, Concilio Escolar… los estudiantes deben tener un promedio de 2.0 en su GPA. Los grados también son un factor determinante para seleccionar a los estudiantes que participaran en el viaje anual al Gran Cañón. Asimismo, es importante señalar que los estudiantes de 8° grado que tengan un promedio de GPA muy bajo o que tengan muchas F no podrán participar en las actividades de fin de año ni en la Ceremonia de Graduación. Si su hijo/a no obtuvo buenos grados en el primer cuatrimestre, por favor déle ánimos para que aprenda de sus errores e incúlquele que nunca es demasiado tarde para retomar el buen camino.

Grand Canyon Parent’s Informational Meeting

Principal’s Message It is my sincere hope that everyone was able to celebrate a wonderful Thanksgiving with family, friends, and a lot of good food! At Kennedy, we are very grateful every day to be part of such a caring community. I want to thank all parents/guardians for coming to Parent-Teacher conferences. If you were unable to attend the conferences, the report cards were sent to you in the mail. We had an Honor's Assembly for the First Quarter students before the Break to honor student’s effort and hard work. Students received an Honor's Diploma for their efforts. We also encouraged all students to try a little harder if they did not make the Honor Roll First Quarter so that they could make it for the Second Quarter. Please remember that students need to make the Honor Roll for two of the first three Quarters in order to qualify for Honor's Night in June.

Message From RCEF The Redwood City Whole Foods store has generously extended the RCEF’s turn as a designated recipient of its shopping bag donation program through the holiday season. Do something good for the environment and our students and remember to bring your own shopping bags to send an automatic contribution to the RCEF. Whole Foods is also partnering with Honey Bear Trees to donate proceeds from all of their Christmas tree sales to the RCEF at the Redwood City store only. There will be a special sustainable Christmas tree event in the Whole Foods parking lot on December 5, 2009, between 12 to 3pm, so be sure to drop by. The RCEF has also been designated by our local REI store, at 1119 Industrial Road, as the sole recipient of funds raised through its 2009 Giving Tree. Donations will be targeted to supporting Outdoor Education. There will be a gift-wrapping

Holiday Teddy Grams

Beginning Monday, December 7th – 18th, The KMS Graduation Committee will be selling holiday Teddy Grams again to fundraiser for 8th grade 2010 Graduation. You can order them at lunch for your special someone for only $ 3.00 each. There are also Holiday Grams sold for $ 1.00.

Yearbook Art Contest

We received many wonderful entries, and it was a difficult decision amongst our four judges. The winner of the 2010 Year Book Art Contest is Roxy Wellington. Congratulations! Her drawing will be displayed on the front page of the 2010 Kennedy yearbook. Some other drawings chosen will also be featured inside the book. Thank you to all the students who participated. Great job!

As the new Family Engagement Specialist, my objective is to increase family involvement and participation as a whole at Kennedy Community School. Currently, there are parents participating in a six week Parent Leadership Training where they are improving their skills as a leader in order to utilize them effectively at Kennedy Community School and in their community. Parents have also volunteered their time and efforts for events such as the “Second Harvest” in which we distributed food to over 100 families! This month the Food Distribution will take place on December 17th and we are currently seeking parent volunteers. The Family Center has also assisted families by helping them receive Christmas trees and toys for the children. This has been made possible through different organizations. In addition, meetings for the Mental Health support group will begin on December 9th through March 10th, taking place in the Family Center from 4:00-5:30 PM every Wednesday. If you are interested, please call Iris Lopez in the Family Center to sign up. If you would like to meet with me, please feel free to drop by Mondays and Tuesdays from 10-12 PM or 3-4 PM. Holiday Teddy Grams

El comité que organiza la graduación del 8° grado en el 2010 empezara a vender Teddy Grams para obtener fondos. La venta tendrá lugar entre el 7 y 18 de diciembre . Puede encargarlos como almuerzo para un ser querido por solo $3.00. También hay Holiday Grams que se venden por $ 1.00.


Concurso de arte para le anuario

Recibimos muchos trabajos excelentes y fue muy difícil para los jueces tomar un decisión. El ganador o la ganadora del concurso para el Anuario Escolar es Roxy Wellington ¡Felicidades! Su dibujo aparecerá en la primera portada del anuario del 2010. Otro ocho dibujos aparecerán dentro del libro. Gracias a todos los estudiantes que participaron. ¡Buen trabajo!

Celebraciones en Redwood City

¡Jo! ¡jo! ¡jo! Ya llego el momento de celebrar los días festivos con eventos cada vez mas divertidos. Habrá un montón de nieve, regalos comida y actividades divertidas para los mas pequeños: mascotas de zoológico, paseos en pony, fotos con Santa… Venga, juegue todo el día y quédese para presenciar los fuegos artificiales.

Actualmente hay padres participando en un curso sobre liderazgo que les permitirá aplicar nueva habilidades tanto en KMS como en la comunidad. El Centro Familiar también ha ayudado a que las familias recibieran árboles navideños y juguetes para sus niños . Esto a sido posible gracias al apoyo de diferentes organizaciones. Además las juntas del grupo de apoyo de Salud Mental empezaran el 9 de diciembre y duraran hasta el 10 de marzo. Se celebraran en el Centro Familiar de 4 a 5:30 p.m. cada miércoles Si usted esta interesado/a en asistir llame a Iris López al Centro Familiar para inscribirse. Principal’s Message I want to wish everyone a very happy 2010! I know that many of you are working on keeping your New Year's resolutions and I am as well. I want to thank you for all of the incredible parent and community support that we have enjoyed this year volunteering at Kennedy for: the MAZE days, selling PE clothes, the school dances, Student of the Month, chaperoning field trips, fund raising, helping with the Second Harvest, the yearbook, the school web page, the newsletter, the instrumental music program, Grease (the musical), the Graduation Planning Committee, the PTA, the School Site Council, and the ELAC. Many 8th grade parents are asking about High School Registration. There will be an informational meeting on general registration procedures here at Kennedy for students on Friday, January 15th. The actual registration forms will be filled out with the High School counselors here at school on March 16, 17, and 18. If any family would like to submit an Intra-District Student Transfer Request, we have forms available in the office and they are DUE BY 4:00 PM, JANUARY 22 at Sequoia High School District office at 480 James Avenue. Some of you have been also asking about tutorial support for Advanced placement Math classes here at Kennedy. I was made aware of a tutorial resource on You Tube called “Khan Academy” that is a great tool for students who need to get a review of a math concept. The tutorial videos are only available through You Tube (so I want to make sure parents are aware they need to be supervising the use of You Tube as there are a lot of other inappropriate videos available on this site). High School students have

found Khan Academy to be a great resource for AP Math classes.

Square Bowl 2010

Tuesday, January 26th from 6 – 8 PM in the Kennedy Gym, we will be having our annual Square Bowl dance competition. This is one of our biggest events at Kennedy. Come & watch your children dance to the music using calls like “Dosado, Promenade, and Allemande” etc.) They have been working very hard in their PE classes to learn their steps. This is a must not miss event, even if your student chose to not participate. Don’t forget your cameras!

Kennedy Community School A Message From: Adriana Resendez [email protected] The month of December was a very busy and fun filled month for parents. Parents were recognized for their completion of the Leadership Series held by Peninsula Conflict Resolution Center and celebrated with their graduation on the 7th of December. In addition, we had a very successful Produce Distribution Drive and were able to distribute gifts on behalf of various donors. The month of January will be just as busy as we are having various events. On January 7th we will be hosting our first ELAC planning committee meeting be as well as our ELAC meeting at 6:00 p.m. in the school library. We would love for parents to attend so that we can implement their ideas while contributing to the sense of community and creating the best environment at Kennedy Community School. In addition, there will be Parent University night being held on January 20th from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Taft Community School. This will be a way for parents to gain additional knowledge as well as an opportunity to interact with Taft parents. Parents will be given the opportunity to attend various workshops such as Strategies to Improve Reading Skills or The Road to College. There are many events coming up along with various volunteer opportunities and ways in which parents can become involved. Centro Comunitario de Kennedy Un mensaje de: Adriana Resendez [email protected] El mes de diciembre fue un mes muy ocupado y divertido para los padres. Los padres fueron reconocidos por su cumplimiento en las Series de liderazgo llevado a cavo por el Centro de Resoluciones y Conflictos de la Península y celebrado su graduación 7 de diciembre. El mes de enero será un mes ocupado también ya que tenemos varios evento s planeados. El 7 de enero tendremos nuestra primera reunión de comité ELAC, como también la reunión de ELAC a las 6 p.m. en la biblioteca de la escuela. Nos gustaría la asistencia de los padres para implementar sus ideas mientras que estas contribuyen a crea un sentido comunitario y en crea un mejor ambiente en Kennedy Community School. En adición, tendremos una noche de Universidades para padres que se llevara acabo el 20 de marzo de 6 a 8 p.m. en Taft Community School. Esta será una manera para que los padres obtengan conocimiento adicional y tengan la oportunidad de relacionarse con los padres de la escuela Taft. Message From Jan Christensen Last year the Redwood City School District faced the worst budget cuts in many decades. Due to the state budget crisis, the district was forced to cut $5.5 million from the 2009-10 budget, including administrators, teachers, counselors, and clerical staff. Class sizes increased at the K-3 level, and library hours were reduced. About $5 million more would have been cut, but the federal stimulus package allowed the district to save a number of programs including instrumental music, and the Gifted and Talented Program (GATE), and a number of important staff positions. The news from Sacramento remains grim. The stateís Legislative Analystís Office projects a state budget shortfall of $6.3 billion for 2009-2010, and a $14.7 billion shortfall for 2010-11. We do not yet know the full extent of the impact on our district from this latest bad news, but it is very possible that the state will impose mid-year cuts for the current school year. If the state imposes mid-year cuts, our district will have to eliminate programs and positions during this school year. In addition, we will have to cut $5-8 million dollars from the 2010-11 budget. There is no pleasant way to communicate such bad news, but it is important for you to know the challenges that lie ahead. Keeping our community informed of budget developments is a top priority, so we have planned a series of interactive community budget meetings for January and February to provide a budget update, and answer questions. We would like to invite you to a Community Budget Preview just for parent leaders at 9 a.m. on Friday, January 15 in the board room at the district offices, 750 Bradford St. This meeting is for school Site Council, PTA/Parent Club board, English Language Advisory Council (ELAC) and District English Language Advisory Council (DELAC), Redwood City Education Foundation (RCEF) board members, and Special Education Parent Teacher Association for Redwood City (SEPTAR).

We have officially started the Second Semester (Third Quarter). I would encourage everyone to come to Parent/Teacher conferences next week, Monday, February 8 - Thursday, February 11 from 2:00-3:15 PM. You will receive the Second Quarter report card and check in with your child's teachers about how your child is progressing academically. I remind students that every day is a new day, and if they did not do so well in the first part of the school year they can still turn it around and do well for the second part of the year! In particular the 8th graders need to pay special attention to their grades so as not to jeopardize their standing for the end of the year Graduation Ceremony, Graduation Dance/Celebration, and the Day on the Green. The teachers and school have been going through some extensive training around "Explicit Direct Instruction"(EDI) as a way of improving classroom instruction in order to increase student achievement as part of our School-wide Improvement Plan. We have contracted with a Coach from Data Works who came for 5 days of training at Kennedy in January and will return for 5 days in March. The Professional Development is innovative in that the Coach and teachers actually teach EDI lessons using EDI strategies in actual Kennedy classrooms with students. Teachers can observe the strategies and lesson and ask questions to the coach and each other. Some of the EDI strategies on which we are focusing include: teaching to a specific Learning Objective, Checking for Student Understanding by using White Boards and calling on Non-volunteers, Think-pair share, and whole class reading of text by Tracking and using the Cloze technique. Teachers have also begun to collaborate in the lesson planning which is quite intensive. It is our hope that classroom instruction and student achievement improve as a result.

The Redwood City Education Foundation (RCEF) is seeking nominations for a new award that honors the memory of Pat Crawford and her service to our community. Pat was beloved for many years for her role at Open Gate Nursery School and was also well respected as a highly active volunteer in our school district and city. The RCEF was fortunate to count her among our strongest supporters.

Candidates should have an outstanding record of volunteer service in our school district that exemplifies Pat's lifelong commitment to education and her unique ability to foster and inspire volunteering in those around her.

Hemos comenzado oficialmente el segundo semestre (tercer cuarto). Me gustaría animar a todos a participar en la conferencias de padres y maestros la próxima semana, a partir del lunes 8 de febrero al jueves 11 de febrero de 2 a 3:15 p.m. Usted recibirá la tarjeta de calificaciones del segundo cuarto, y tendrá la oportunidad de chequear con los maestros de su hijo/a acerca de su progreso académico. Les recuerdo a los estudiantes que cada día es un día nuevo y que si no lo hicieron muy bien en la primera parte del año escolar aun pueden hacer cambios y hacerlo mejor y hacerlo mejor ¡la segunda parte del año! Particularmente los estudiantes del 8° grado necesitan poner especial atención a sus calificaciones para no poner en peligro su participación en la ceremonia de graduación, el baile, y Día de Campo “Day on the Green.”

Los maestros y la escuela han pasado por un extenso entrenamiento de Instrucción Explicita Directa (EDI) como una manera de mejorar la instrucción en las clases a manera de incrementar el aprendizaje de los estudiantes como parte de nuestro plan de mejoramiento en nuestra escuela. Hemos contratado un instructor de “Data Works” que impartió un entrenamiento por 5 días en Kennedy en enero y que regresara por 5 días en marzo. El desarrollo profesional es innovador en el cual el instructor y los maestros verdaderamente enseñan lecciones de EDI, utilizando estrategias de EDI con los estudiantes en los salones de clases de Kennedy. Los maestros pueden observar las estrategias y las lecciones, y hacer preguntas al instructor y entre si mismos. Algunas de las estrategias de EDI en las que nos enfocamos incluyen: enseñar un objetivo especifico de aprendizaje, verificar el entendimiento del estudiante utilizando pizarras y preguntando a los estudiante no voluntarios, trabajando en parejas, por medio de la lectura de textos llevando el record y utilizando la técnica Cloze. También los maestros comenzaron a colaborar con el planeamiento de lecciones, lo cual es muy intensivo. Son nuestros deseos que la instrucción en las clases y el progreso académico mejoren como resultado de este trabajo.

La Fundación para la Educación de Redwood City (RCEF por sus siglas en inglés) está buscando nominaciones para un nuevo premio que honre la memoria de Pat Crawford y su servicio a nuestra comunidad. Pat fue muy querida por muchos años por su papel en Open Gate Nursery School y también fue muy respetada por ser una voluntaria muy activa en nuestro distrito escolar y la ciudad de Redwood City. La RCEF fue muy afortunada en contar con ella y el inmenso apoyo que ofreció. I wanted to relate some sobering information regarding a reported increase in teenage binge drinking in California as reported by the San Jose Mercury News, so that you can talk to your child. The number of teens engaged in binge drinking in California has increased especially amongst middle and high school students. Roughly 6 percent of seventh-graders and 29 percent of 11th graders reported having at least one episode of binge drinking in the past 30 days according to the California Healthy Kids Survey results. Additionally, hard liquor has replaced beer as the alcohol teens drink. Vodka is the most popular choice for teens as it can be mixed with sweet drinks so that teens can consume large quantities without tasting the alcohol as much. Alcohol poisoning is a very real threat and we can not underestimate the importance of getting young people help in time when they get sick from too much drinking. Some kids are afraid they'll get in trouble with their parents or the law and do not want to call to get help for their friends. If a person is unconscious from too much drinking and you can not wake them up, you need to call 911 immediately. The recent tragic death of 15 year old Gilroy teenager Sarah Botill due to alcohol poisoning at a sleep over on December 5th, is a stark reminder to all teenagers that it is critical to get help right away when someone has passed out from binge drinking.

Your job is to protect your child and prepare him/her to become a fully functioning adult. 2) Remain calm: Nothing get resolved when stress makes it impossible to think clearly. Can't respond rationally? Take a breath until you can. 3) Talk less and listen more: Just like the rest of us, teens want to be respected and heard. Be a "safe" and available person to talk to. 4) It's a balancing act: A key challenge in parenting teens is to remain emotionally connected while granting your kids more privacy and autonomy. 5) They're always watching: Want your teen to be trustworthy, responsible, and compassionate? Make sure you're modeling those values in your own life.



6) Make your expectations clear and be consistent with your follow-through: If kids know the consequences ahead of time and they've bought into the rules of the house, they're more likely to make healthy choices. 7) Catch your teen in the act of doing something right: Praise shows that you noticed their efforts. It also promotes a feeling of competency. 8) Be real: Father/Mother/Guardian does NOT always know best. Admit your own confusion and mistakes. Apologize when appropriate. Show your kids that just like them, you too are a "work in progress." 9) Regularly create time to enjoy being a family: Having regular meals together and relaxing, unplugged from digital technology, is a gift with long-lasting benefits. 10) Lighten Up!: Humor is a great de-stressor. Remember, no one stays a teen (or a parent of a teen) forever!

Second Harvest

Mensaje del Director Quisiera compartir con ustedes información con respecto a un aumento de adolescentes bebiendo excesivamente en California, reportado por el periódico San Jose Mercury News, para que usted pueda hablar con su hijo/a. El número de jóvenes que están tomando excesivamente en California ha aumentado especialmente entre los estudiantes que están en la secundaria y la preparatoria. Aproximadamente 6 por ciento de alumnos del séptimo grado y 29 por ciento de alumnos del onceavo grado reporto haber tomado por lo menos una vez excesivamente en los últimos 30 días según los resultados de una encuesta por parte de California Healthy Kids. Adicionalmente, al parecer los jóvenes han reemplazado la cerveza con alcohol fuerte como su nueva preferencia. La vodka es la elección más popular para jóvenes ya que puede ser mezclada con bebidas dulces para que los jóvenes puedan consumir cantidades grandes sin probar tanto el alcohol . El envenenamiento por tomar mucho alcohol es una amenaza muy verdadera y nosotros no podemos subestimar la importancia de conseguir ayuda a tiempo para los jóvenes cuando ellos se enferman por haber tomado demasiado. End Of The Year 8th Grade Behavior Management

Every year about this time 8th Grade students begin to think about the end of the year and summer fun and their behavior tends to fall off. In order to help them maintain good, positive behavior and maintain their academic focus through the end of the year we use a STRIKE System as an incentive to control their behavior. The System works as follows: If an 8th Grade student chooses to misbehave, they are given a STRIKE in addition to the usual consequence for their misbehavior. If a student earns 3 STRIKEs they will not be allowed to attend the Day on the Green Party. 3 more STRIKEs, for a total of 6, and they will not attend the Graduation Party. 3 more, for a total of 9, and they will NOT be allowed to attend the Graduation Ceremony itself. A formal suspension would cause a student to automatically lose one of the 3 graduation week events. All 8th Grader’s will be made aware of the STRIKE System in an assembly. In the past this system has worked very well in keeping 8th grade students focused on academics and achieving success in the classroom.

Principal’s Message Spring is here and it is a time of rejuvenation and renewed energy! I hope everyone enjoys a wonderful Spring Break with family and friends. We are now in the “home stretch” in terms of preparations for State Testing which starts on Tuesday, May 4th. Our teachers have reviewed the Benchmark Examination results, and are reviewing the Essential Standards (the standards that are most frequently asked and or heavily weighted on the test) in order to prepare our students to do their best. Our students and staff have worked hard all year and you can help by discussing how important these tests are in terms of placing students in class for next year and that everyone should take the test seriously and do their best. More Tips for Parents about Family Meetings (From Annie Fox’s Parent Forum) Family Meetings offer golden opportunities for you and your kids to connect more deeply, to become better listeners, to learn the art of compromise and to validate your collective ability to work together to resolve problems. Step #1: Schedule the Meeting: Pick a time that works for everyone. As a family you can decide to hold regularly scheduled meetings. Additionally, anyone in the family should have the right to call a meeting at any time. Step #2: Create Ground Rules, Take Turns Talking: To highlight respect for the person who is speaking, your family may choose to pass an object of some sort—the “talking stick”. Step #3: Stick to your own feelings. Use “I Messages”: Say things like, “I feel ______ when you _____.” As in, “ I feel frustrated when you don’t do your chores.” or, “ I feel scared when you and dad yell at each other.” When each speaker focuses on his/her feelings, listeners are less likely to feel attacked because no one’s blaming them for anything. Step #4: Avoid words like, “ You always...” or “You never...” : When you start accusing and putting people down, they usually stop listening and counter-attack. This never helps resolve problems and has no place in a family meeting. Some families only call family meetings when there’s a major issue to discuss. Other families like to hold meetings on a regular basis to “clear the air” and give everyone a chance to speak their mind. Still other families have a tradition of a “go around” at the dinner table, where everyone weighs in on the challenges and successes of the day. Kennedy Community School A Message From: Adriana Resendez [email protected] The month of March included our first cafecito/coffee, which was a great success! Parents were able to have a dialogue with the Principal and bring forth any questions that were on their minds. The next cafecito/coffee will take place in May so be looking out for the date. Second Harvest

Second Harvest will have a free food distribution of "Fruits and Vegetables" at Kennedy Middle School on Thursday, April 15th from 2 – 3 PM. There will be other dates for food distribution every month. RCEF Benefit for a Brighter Future April 30, 2010 marks the date of the Benefit for a Brighter Future - Redwood City's premiere fundraising event for the Redwood City Education Foundation (RCEF). The RCEF invites everyone to this fun and informative evening which combines important news about schools with the chance to mingle with the education, business, and community leaders of Redwood City. Cuando se acerca el final del año escolar los estudiantes del 8avo. Grado empiezan a pensar en las actividades que preparamos para finalizar el curso y en la diversión veraniega. Con el fin de ayudarlos a mantener un buen comportamiento y para animarlos a continuar enfocados en su progreso académico utilizamos un sistema denominado STRIKE. Con este método tratamos de incentivar un buen ambiente escolar. Si un estudiante de 8avo. grado muestra un comportamiento inadecuado, además de la consecuencia habitual, se le da un STRIKE. Si un/a estudiante recibe tres STRIKES no podrá participar en una fiesta denominada Day on the Green. Si un/a estudiante acaba recibiendo 6 STRIKES, no podrá asistir a la Fiesta de Graduación. Si un/a estudiante llega a recibir 9 STRIKES no podrá asistir a la Ceremonia de Graduación. Este sistema en método ha funcionado muy bien y ha logrado mantener a los /las estudiantes de 8avo. grado enfocados en el aspecto académico.

Nuestros maestros evaluaron los resultados de los exámenes de “Benchmark” y los estándares esenciales (Los estándares en los que mas frecuentemente somos cuestionados o fuertemente evaluados en los exámenes) a manera de preparar los estudiantes a dar lo mejor de si. Nuestros estudiantes y nuestro personal han trabajado arduamente durante todo el año, usted también puede ayudarnos dialogando acerca de la importancia de estos exámenes para colocar a los estudiantes en las clases para el próximo año y de que todos deben tomar en serio este examen y hacer lo mejor que puedan. Mas consejos para los padres acerca de reuniones familiares. (De Annie Fox “Parent Forum”) Las reuniones familiares ofrecen una muy buena oportunidad de crear un conexión mas profunda entre usted y sus hijos, para ser mejores escuchas y aprender el arte del compromiso y validar la habilidad de trabajar en resolver problemas. Paso #1: Programen la reunión: Elija un momento que funcione para todos. Como familia pueden mantener un mismo horario para regularmente reunirse. Adicionalmente, cada uno en la familia puede llamar a reunión en cualquier momento. Paso #2: Creen reglas básicas, tomen un turnos al hablar: Para remarcar el respeto hacia la persona que esta hablando, elija un objeto el cual pueden utilizar para dar turno a la siguiente persona para hablar por ejemplo “ La pelota que habla” Paso #3: Apéguese a sus sentimientos. Utilice mensajes sobre si mismo: Por ejemplo, “Yo siento que ______ cuando tu _____.” Como también, “ Yo me siento frustrado (a) cuando tu no haces tus quehaceres.” o, “Yo me siento asustado cuando papá y tu se gritan uno al otro.” Cuando cada uno se enfoca en sus sentimientos es poco probable que los que lo escuchan se sientan atacados porque nadie estará culpando a nadie. Paso #4: Evite palabras como, “ Tu siempre...” o “Tu nunca...” : Cuando se empieza a acusar y a sobajar una a las personas, usualmente dejan de escucharnos y empiezan a contraatacar. Esto nunca nos ayuda a resolver problemas y no tiene lugar en una reunión familiar. Algunas familias solo se reúnen cuando hay problemas serios de que discutir. A otras familias les gusta sostener reuniones regularmente para “mantener transparencia” y darle cada uno la oportunidad de

expresar lo que piensa. También. Otras familias aun conservan la tradición de reunirse a la mesa ala hora de la cena para que todos cuenten sus obstáculos y sus logros del día. No importa como y cuando se reúnan, lo importante es que tenga comunicación abiertamente y compartan sus sentimientos escuchándose unos a los otros y trabajando en como resolver problemas unidos como familia.

RCEF “Beneficio para Brighter Future 2010” El 30 de abril de 2010 marca la fecha del Benefit for a Brighter Future - evento principal de recaudación de fondos de Redwood City para la Redwood City Education Foundation (RCEF). End Of The Year 8th Grade Behavior Management

Every year about this time 8th grade students begin to think about the end of the year and summer fun and their behavior tends to fall off. In order to help them maintain good, positive behavior and maintain their academic focus through the end of the year we use a STRIKE System as an incentive to control their behavior. The system works as follows: If an 8th grade student chooses to misbehave, they are given a STRIKE in addition to the usual consequence for their misbehavior. If a student earns 3 STRIKEs they will not be allowed to attend the Day on the Green Party. 3 more STRIKEs, for a total of 6, and they will not attend the Graduation Party. 3 more, for a total of 9, and they will NOT be allowed to attend the Graduation Ceremony itself. A formal suspension would cause a student to automatically lose one of the 3 graduation week events. All 8th grader’s will be made aware of the STRIKE System in an assembly. In the past this system has worked very well in keeping 8th grade students focused on academics and achieving success in the classroom.


We are currently in the middle of the California State Test which is important for the school and for the students. We utilize CST test results to help place students in Reading and Math classes, as well as students grades, Benchmark results, and Teacher recommendations. I want to congratulate Drama and Dance teacher Elena Mori for achieving her 30 years teaching milestone in Redwood City School District this year! I also want to acknowledge 6th grade teacher Nancy Bloomquist for receiving the Bay Discoveries Award from the Marine Science Institute for her teaching the students about the Bay at Kennedy. A final kudos goes to 7th grade teacher Kathy Parara for Teacher of the Year from the Cleo Eulau Center. We are certainly blessed with some wonderful teachers at Kennedy. Please try and come to the Benefit Concert on May 29th at Sequoia High School to support our Instrumental Music Program. The goal is to raise $ 100,000 to save music at our school. I also want to make sure everyone is aware that our last day of school will remain Thursday, June 17th.

New Chinese Mandarin Language Program Being Launched At Sequoia High School

· Sequoia High School's World Language Department will be offering Mandarin classes next year . Mandarin is rapidly becoming the 2nd most important world language for: § Business, Economics, Science, and Diplomacy · Sequoia High School wants to gauge the interest level in the program and space is limited · Be part of the new Chinese Mandarin program at Sequoia High School - Fun Field trips, activities, and events Only 25 students from the incoming Freshmen class can be accommodated · That is only about 3-4 students from each current 8th grade class from each middle school feeding into Sequoia High School

Kennedy Community School A Message From: Adriana Resendez [email protected] There are many events coming up as the school year is quickly coming to a close. Kennedy parents are participating in Tuesday morning Parent Leadership classes at Hoover School along with other parents from different Redwood City school sites. There will be an upcoming Violence Prevention workshop series opened to both parents and students. The first will be held for daughters and mothers in a workshop titled, Odd Girl Out on May 12th. Secondly, there will be a Bullying workshop on May 18th and a Gang Awareness Night on May 27th. The last two workshops will take place from 6:00-8:00 p.m. in the school library and all will include dinner. Lastly, there will be an ELAC meeting held on May 20th from 6:00-7:30 p.m. in the school library. If you need any information on any of the above activities or would like to RSVP for the Violence Prevention workshop series, please feel free to contact Adriana Resendez in the Family Center.

Gardner Center for Youth and Their Communities (JGC) at Stanford University and Kennedy Middle School in Redwood City, California to offer some practical solutions to how might middle schools support the full development of young adolescents.

8TH Grade Graduation Committee Needs

Donations The 8th Grade Graduation Committee needs donated water, food items (email for list), sweets and treats for the graduation party. Please deliver to the Main Office on June 16th or the morning of June 17th. Last minute drop offs will be received at the back door of the school gym between 3:00-4:30 PM. We CANNOT accept anything AFTER the graduation as parents should not be around the gym as the party is for graduation students only. This will allow us to use all of your cash contributions, proceeds from fundraising activities, as well as the money donated by the PTA for the main food and activities for the party. Quiero felicitar a la maestra de baile y drama, Elena Mori por haber alcazado 30 años en el Distrito Escolar de Redwood City ¡este año! También quiero dar reconocimiento a la maestra de 6° grado Nancy Bloomquist por recibir el reconocimiento de “Bay Discoveries Award” del Instituto de Ciencias de la Marina por enseñar a los estudiantes de Kennedy acerca de la bahia. Por ultimo quiero felicitar a la maestra de 7° grado Kathy Parara por el reconocimiento que le otorgo el Centro “Cleo Eulau” como “La Maestra del Año. Por favor trate de asistir al concierto benéfico el 29 de mayo en Sequoia High School en apoyo a nuestro programa de música instrumental. Lo padres de Kennedy participan en las clases de “Padres Como Lideres” los martes por la mañana en la escuela Hoover junto con otros padres de otras escuelas en Redwood City. Esta por venir un Taller de Prevención de Violencia abierto para los padres y estudiantes. El primer taller será para madres e hijas llamado “Niña Extraña” el 12 de mayo. El segundo taller será acerca de “Intimidación” el 28 de mayo y uno de “Prevención de Padillas” el 27 de mayo. Los últimos dos talleres incluirán comida y se llevaran a cabo de las 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. en la biblioteca. El Comité De Graduación Del 8° Grado Necesita Donaciones

El Comité De Graduación Del 8avo grado necesita donaciones de agua, comida, dulces y regalitos para la fiesta de graduación. Por favor traigan su donaciones a la oficina el 16 de Junio, o la mañana de la graduación en junio 17. Las donaciones de ultimo minuto serán recibidas por la puerta trasera del gimnasio entre las 3:00 y las 4:30 p.m. No podemos aceptar nada después de la graduación, como tampoco puede haber padres alrededor del gimnasio ya que el baile es solo para los estudiantes graduados. Esto nos permitirá utilizar todas sus donaciones provenientes de las actividades de colectas de fondos, como también el dinero donado por el PTA para la comida principal y las actividades de la fiesta. A Message From Assistant Principal Patricia Pelino

Dear Kennedy Community,

As many of you know, I will be leaving Kennedy at the end of this year to be the new Principal at Taft School. I would like to thank you for your kindness and support during these two years as Kennedy’s Assistant Principal. Kennedy has been an amazing place to be, and I want you to know that I will miss you very much. Good luck to all of you, and thanks again for all you do for Kennedy.


Unbelievably, we have arrived at the end of the school year. I want to acknowledge the great growth academically and socially in our students this year, the wonderful support from parents and community, and the tremendous effort by the Kennedy Staff to overcome a difficult year with budget cuts and staff illnesses. Of course, the school year is not over yet and there are a lot of end-of-the-year events happening including Open House, the Dance Show, Day on the Green, and the 8th grade Graduation. We wish all 8th graders and families the best of luck in high school next year.

Returning and new Kennedy students and families need to know that our mandatory MAZE day pre-registration will be on August 19 and 20th. Photo ID pictures will again be taken at MAZE day and all forms need to be turned in prior to receiving your child's new class schedule for 2010/2011 school year. The first day of school next year will be on Monday, August 23rd. I will be sending out the rest of the 2010/2011 calendar as soon as it is approved by the School District.

All students are responsible for returning textbooks and library books to the school. Students who have not returned their books will not receive their final report card. 8th graders will also not receive their diplomas if their books are not returned to Kennedy by June 17th. If any library or textbooks are lost, the replacement value must be paid before receiving your child’s report card and/or diploma.

The Summer Reading lists can be found on the school website, as well as in the Office or in the school Library. Your child will also be given the list by their Language Arts teacher. Please make sure your children choose from the list provided. They will be responsible to read two books from the Authors list. Two will be required, (one non-fiction and one fiction book).

The KMS PTA would like to thank all the wonderful parent & community volunteers, including our Board members, who helped make this a great school year. Next year 2010-11, we are moving our meetings to Thursdays. The first meeting will be held on Thursday, September 2nd, in the school Library. Kennedy Community School A Message From: Adriana Resendez [email protected] The month of May was incredibly busy and full of events for Kennedy families. There was a violence prevention series that began with an Odd Girl Out workshop that included mothers and daughters from Kennedy coming together to discuss important issues on self-esteem, gossiping, bullying, and much more. Next we had a Bullying workshop and commenced the series with a Gang Prevention and Awareness workshop. The parents that participated in the Parent Leadership Academy finished their classes and will be celebrating their graduation on June 8th at 6:00 p.m. at Taft Community School. The Family Center will continue to support the parents at Kennedy Community School throughout the summer. There will be parent groups and workshops offered Tuesdays and Thursdays. If you are interested in attending the parenting groups on Tuesdays and Thursdays, please contact Iris Lopez or Adriana Resendez for the workshops that are going to be held on Tuesdays. We are constantly in search of parent volunteers so if you are interested in becoming an active parent at Kennedy Community School, please contact Adriana Resendez in the Family Center. Un mensaje de Subdirectora Patricia Pelino

Estimado comunidad de Kennedy, Como muchos de ustedes saben, dejaré Kennedy a final de este año para pasar a ser la nueva directora de la escuela Taft. Me gustaría darles las gracias por su bondad y apoyo durante estos dos años como subdirectora. Kennedy ha sido un lugar increible de trabajo y quiero que sepan que los voy a extrañar mucho. Buena suerte a todos ustedes y gracias por todo lo que hacen en Kennedy.


Increíblemente hemos llegado al final del año escolar. Quiero dar reconocimiento al gran crecimiento académico y social de nuestros estudiantes este año, al gran apoyo de los padres, la comunidad y al gran esfuerzo del staff de Kennedy para superar este difícil año con los recortes de presupuesto y las dificultades de salud del personal. Por supuesto el año escolar aun no termina, hay aun muchos eventos por suceder incluyendo “Open House”, El show de baile, día de campo “Day on the Green”, y la Graduación del 8° grado. Les deseamos la mejor de las suertes a los estudiantes del 8° grado y sus familias para el próximo año en Preparatoria. Los estudiantes nuevos, sus familias y los que regresan a Kennedy deben estar enterados de nuestro día obligatorio de preinscripción “MAZE Day” que se llevará a cavo los días 19 y 20 de Agosto. Las fotos de las Identificaciones serán tomadas en los días de “MAZE Day”. Todas la formas deben ser entregadas antes de recibir el horario de clases de su estudiante para el curso escolar 2010/2011. El primer día de escuela será el 23 de agosto. El calendario del próximo año escolar 2010/2011 Será enviado en cuanto sea aprobado por el Distrito Escolar.

Todos los estudiantes deben devolver los libros de texto y los libros de la biblioteca. Los estudiantes que no hayan devuelto sus libros no recibirán su boletín de grados. Además los estudiantes de 8° grado no recibirán sus diplomas si su libros no han sido entregados antes del 18 de junio. Se deberá pagar el valor de los libros perdidos antes de recibir el boletín de grados y/o el diploma.

Las listas de lectura para el verano están disponibles tanto en nuestra página de Internet como en la oficina y en la biblioteca de la escuela. El maestro/a de Artes del Lenguaje entregará también la lista a cada estudiante. Por favor asegúrese de que su estudiante elija de la lista proveída. Los estudiantes serán responsables de leer dos libros de los autores en la lista. Dos serán requisito (un libro de ficción y otro que no sea de ficción).

Centro Comunitario de Kennedy Un mensaje de: Adriana Resendez [email protected] El mes de mayo estuvo increíblemente ocupado y lleno de eventos para las familias de Kennedy. Hubo eventos de prevención de violencia, las cuales comenzaron con el taller llamado ”Odd Girl Out” el que incluyo madres e hijas juntas para discutir problemas importantes de autoestima, Chismorreo, Intimidación y mucho mas. Enseguida tuvimos un taller de Intimidación y comenzamos la serie con el taller de Prevención de las Pandillas. Los padres que participaron en la Academia de Liderazgo Para Los Padres terminaron sus clases y celebrarán su graduación en el 8 de Junio a las 6 p.m. en la escuela Taft. El Cetro de Familia de Kennedy continuara apoyando a los padre de la escuela durante el verano. Habrá grupos de padre y talleres ofrecidos los martes y jueves. Si esta interesado en asistir a estos grupos, por favor contacte a Iris López o, a Adriana Resendez acerca de los talleres que se llavera a cavo los martes. Constantemente estamos en busca de padres voluntarios, si esta interesado en ser un padre voluntario participando en la escuela Kennedy, favor de contactar a Adriana Resendez, en el Centro de Familia de Kennedy. ¡Que tengan un maravilloso verano y espero seguir en contacto!
