Kenmare & District Garden ClubAt our meeting this month we were delighted to welcome multi-awardwinning, at Bloom and Hampton Court Shows, Oliver Schurmann, gardendesigner and owner of Mt Venus Nurseries.  He began his horticulturalcareer as a hard working gardener with a renowned  German nurserymanfrom whom he learned his trade.  His skills were amply shown to us in hissuperbly illustrated talk on Prairie Gardens.  He began with pictures ofprairie lands in the U.S.A. and Canada and then proceeded to show how touse the ideas in our own gardens.  The range of grasses and perennials forsuch planting is incredibly varied in height, shape and colouring.  Subtletyof design, with careful interspersing of blocks of colour and differentlyshaped plants as highlights, and gentle curves to echo the movement ofgrasses - so much to admire and emulate in our gardens. A delight - thankyou Oliver and especially for all those lovely plants which we took muchpleasure in buying!

Next month's meeting is on Thursday, April 7th when, in addition to ourA.G.M. business, we shall welcome Michael Byrne, head gardener inChurchill Gardens, who will address us on the subject of Trees. There willalso be a plant exchange. New members always welcome.

Kenmare Mens Shed have, for the lasttwelve months been involved in anincredible project for the Thomas FMeagher foundation which involved thefinishing, coating and varnishing ofalmost 2000 flag poles and stands, to bepresented to all post primary schools inIreland.Thomas F Meagher was a visionary anda revolutionary who designed and flewthe first Irish tricolor in Waterford on the7th of March 1848, his proclamation ofthe meaning of the design was ‘Thewhite in the centre signifies a lastingtruce between the orange and the green.I trust that beneath its folds, the hands of theIrish Catholic and the Irish Protestant may beclasped in generous and heroic brotherhood.’On March 7th at a ceremony in Croke Park, thePresident Michael D Higgins presided over thepresenting of tricolours to all the schools. TheChairman of the Thomas F MeagherFoundation, our own Reverend MichaelCavanagh together with Senator Mark Dalyextended an invitation to Kenmare Mens Shedto send representatives to the ceremony andafterwards to lunch at Leinster House. As a postscript to this event, when we arrivedhome I discovered that I had lost my quiteexpensive camera which has been usedextensively by my daughter to record importantfamily events.

We rang the lost property at Tralee station, nosign, Croke Park, no sign, Dublin Police lostproperty, no sign. Leinster house, same result,I am now in deepest trouble. Silent meals, andthe promise (or threat) of no Christmas cards orpresents for at least the next 5 years. The very next day I was hiding in the MensShed when my wife received a phone call. Thecaller asked for me and when told I was out, explained that he was a Dublin Taxi driver whohad carried 3 men from Leinster house andfound the Camera after. My wife said "How on earth did you find us?”

He explained that we all had a great craic on thejourney, and he remembered that we had been toCroke Park for a presentation, he alsoremembered that we belonged to Mens Shedand we came from Kerry, and it just so

happened that he had a friend in Dublin whowas involved with the Mens Shed nationally. He rang his friend who told him that KenmareMens Shed had been to Dublin as they wereinvolved in a presentation, he asked his friend ifhe had any contacts, his friend went on thecomputer and said "I have a number here for aJohn Willcock he is the secretary, try him. "God bless honest Dublin Taxi drivers!John Willcock SecretaryKenmare Mens Shed

As the Easter festival approaches I am reminded of the times in the1990’s when a few of us from Kenmare Trout Anglers Club used to goup to Galway to fish in the Easter Fly Fishing competition out ofGreenfields on Lough Corrib. We would book in and stay in The AnglersRest Hotel in Headford. A comfortable family run hotel that was guestfriendly with excellent food, what more could we ask for away fromhome? I remember the owner saying to us one bright, clean Springmorning without a puff of wind, ‘Ye will have one grand day out on thelake, lads.’ What we said was that no self respecting trout would stick hisnose out of the water in those conditions. ‘Ha,’ was his response, ‘Did Imention a word about catching Fish? All I said was that you will have agrand day out!’

You might be aware that Good Friday and Christmas day are the only24 hour closed days in bars etc, but if you were staying in a hotel youcould be served drink with your food. This left us in the envious positionof being able to access drinks when others could not. You couldcircumvent the law by bringing a guest back with you to the hotel whocould also have drink. As a result of this grey area we become bestfriends for life and bosom buddies with a lot of anglers that we hardlyknew. They would make us out at the slip when the boats were eithergoing out or coming in, or else on one of the Islands when we stoppedfishing to have our lunch. The object of the exercise was to let them joinin our company at the hotel, they could drink to their hearts content for363 days of the year but getting and drinking that pint or whatever onGood Friday was the sweetest and best of the year. Frank Mc., who I knew to see and who’s reputation I had heard about, Iwas told that his fishing tackle was fit for the rubbish dump but it did notprevent him from catching handsome trout. He could be drawn in a boatwith top international anglers who were rigged out with the best andmost expensive rods, lines, flies etc but Frank Mc would catch more fish

then them with his shoddy old gear. This made him the butt of envious jokes, but it all ran off him like

water off a ducks back. We were sorry for him so when he sidled up to uslooking for access to the hotel we said ok and he slipped in with us. Later that night a pretty drunk and desolate Frank Mc made us off with asad story, he had got a lift to the competition but because he had gonedrinking they decided not to wait for him, so here he was marooned inHeadford.

‘Would any of you help me get home,’ He asked, ‘And I would be sograteful for aspirin.’ he implored.

Like one of his trout he rose to the bait. ‘How far away do you live’, Iasked ‘Oh just half an hours drive from here,’ was his response. ‘And afellow like you, a good driver with a good car, might do it quicker.’ Hooked, I asked Tim to come with me for company, good job as threehours later I was still driving having driven through Cong then ontoMaam Cross on some of the worse roads you could imagine. We reached Leenane, Frank Mc was not home yet but he knew a hostelrythere that would serve him some refreshments and in which we couldjoin him. He also wanted to introduce Tim to a woman who couldbecome the love of his life, and to cap it all he was going to introduceboth of us to The Witch of Leenane, who was famous for fortune telling. If the witch had got the chance at that time to read Tim’s or my mind shewould have found all our sympathy for Frank Mc had been replaced bymurderous intentions on the road to Leenane.

Rejecting all his offers we dumped him and his gear at the top of thevillage and turned the car towards Headford. On the way back Tim sworeif he ever saw me as much salute Frank Mc or go near him he would notbe responsible for his actions. Dawn was breaking when we were goingto bed in our cosy hotel rooms, our fishing week ruined as we were tootired next day to concentrate. There are several lessons to learn from thisstory all to do with Frank Mc.1. Do not under any circumstances feel sorry for him.2. Do not make it easy for him or others to go drinking on Good Friday.3. And definitely do not believe a single word of what you are told.Happy Easter everyone!

The AGM’s of Kenmare Trout Anglers Club and Ardtully SalmonAnglers Limited were on last week. Despite the poor fishing over thepast few seasons the members of both remain remarkably upbeat aboutthe prospects for the new season. The update of the Kilgarvan sewagesystem now in operation since November 2015 should be of great help toThe Roughty River. Plus the fish surveys in the Lake have also beenpositive.

The future of Kenmare is secure, as theyoung entrepreneurs of Cahir NationalSchool recently showed us when they tookpart in the J.E.P. programme which asks children to come up with an idea for a business, produce a product or service andsell it.The School grouped similar ideas together and

had each group choose the best idea in theirgroup, they then worked together on developingtheir idea and presenting it to the Dragon’s Den. The ‘Dragon’s’ Mr. D. Murphy (Murphy’sSuperValu Kenmare), Ms. C. Lynch and Ms. T.O’Shea (School Staff) were very impressed withthe various products, and the winning productwas Cahir Juices. The Dragons were veryimpressed with the standard of juices andvariety of flavours.Once the decision was made everybody got a

job in a department for the business; fromfinance, production & design, marketing, salesand storytelling.

Everybody attempted to make the differentflavours of juices, with a variety of differentrecipes used. The children sampled the variousjuices and decided on the best recipe andflavours. The young students then completed a Market

Research Survey in school to identify the mostpopular flavours, the best size of bottle to useand the amount of money people would bewilling to pay. A second Market ResearchSurvey followed where all the children in theschool were asked to taste the three flavours ofjuice and identify their favouriteThe juices were made in La Rambla in

Killarney as they had to make the juices inpremises which had the correct health and safetyrequirements. With 140 oranges to be juiced,100 lemons to be juiced and 12 bags of frozenmixed berries to be cooked, it was hard work, the hardest part being the juicing of the orangesand lemons. A number of juicers did not survivethe hard work!

Showcase day was Wednesday 24th February inthe school when pre-ordered and pre-paid juiceswere sold. SuperValu then hosted the youngsalespeople who sold out of their 210 bottles ofjuice after only two hours!Derry Murphy at SuperValu Kenmare

presented the children with beautiful T shirts tocommemorate their hard work, saying, “Overthe course of the project the children split intogroups and organised all aspects of the venturethemselves. The project was a great success and fits

perfectly with Kenmare’s status as a fresh foodhaven. The juices fully sold out and everyoneagreed that the product was of the highest quality. The future is bright with fantastic children like these showing us what we canachieve when we work together and support reallocal Irish businesses. ‘The school paid thanks to SuperValu Kenmare

and La Rambla in Killarney for their fabuloussupport and encouragement.

The future of Kenmare is secure, as Cahir National School show us how it's done!

Sometimes one medicine can mix badly with another in your body andthis can change how strongly the medicine works or change its sideeffects. This is called an interaction, and it can also happen whenmedicines mix with certain foods or drinks including alcohol. Food-drug interaction can prevent a medicine from working the way itshould or it can cause a side effect from a medicine to get worse orbetter or it could cause a new side effect. A medicine can also changethe way your body uses a food.

With some medicines it matters if they are taken on a full or emptystomach. Examples of medicines which should be taken on an emptystomach - half an hour to an hour before eating - include thyroidmedicines (Eltroxin), certain antibiotics such as Calvepen orFlucloxacillin or iron preparations. Also the so called Biphosphonates(such as Osteomel, Risontel or Fosamax), medicines to prevent andtreat osteoporosis, only work when you take them on an emptystomach. Take the medicine first thing in the morning with a full glassof plain water (no mineral water) while you are sitting or standing up.Don't take any other medicines, food, drink or dietary supplements forat least 30 minutes after taking the tablet. Also don't lie down for atleast 30 minutes after.

Many common arthritis medicines and painkillers, however, such asaspirin, ibuprofen (Nurofen) or Naproxen should be taken with mealsin order to reduce the likelihood of developing stomach side effects, such as indigestion. All medicines have their own particularinstructions about when to take them. Pay attention to these becauseall medicines are different. Every time you are prescribed a newmedicine, ask your health professional if there are any specialinstructions about food or drink. Also, check for any instructions onthe medicine's label and in the patient leaflet in the ‘How to take it’section.

Alcohol interacts with many medicines, including some prescription, pharmacy and complementary medicines, typically decreasing theeffectiveness of antibiotics and blood pressure and diabetesmedications, and intensifying the potency of pain relievers andsleeping tablets to potentially harmful levels. It can take several hoursfor alcohol to be removed from your body. Therefore, interactionsdon't occur only when you consume medicines and alcohol at the sametime. Combing alcohol with Paracetamol can be toxic to the liver, andalcohol with anti-inflammatory medications like ibuprofen andnaproxen can increase the risk of stomach bleeding.

Grapefruit and grapefruit juice can interact with more than 80medications, including cholesterol-lowering statin drugs, bloodpressure medications and antihistamines.Depending on how the medication is metabolized, grapefruit canreduce the effectiveness, or worse, result in potentially dangerous druglevels in the body. As little as one cup of grapefruit juice or twograpefruit wedges can cause trouble with certain medications. Leafygreens like kale, spinach, broccoli, Brussels sprouts and cabbage arerich in Vitamin K, which plays a role in clot formation and, as a result, can decrease the effectiveness of blood thinners like Warfarin. Buttaking Warfarin does not mean that leafy greens are entirely off limits. As long as you consistently consume about the same amounts ofVitamin K-rich foods every day, your doctor can prescribe Warfarinaccordingly.

If you would like to know more about interactions between food andmedication please ring us on 064-6679880 or call into McSweeneyPharmacy Kenmare and we will be more than happy to answer anyquery that you may have.

General Election 2016. I want to thank people in the greater Kenmarearea that supported my Colleague Brendan Griffin TD, he got a decentvote in the area under difficult circumstances. I had worked closely withBrendan throughout the last 5 years of a Fine Gael led Government andthere has been a lot of positive developments in the Kenmare Area in thattime. I want to wish Independent Deputy’s Danny & Michael Healy-Raeall the best in the new Dail, their vote was astonishing in every corner ofthe County and their achievement is a first in Irish politics. Danny’sdaughter Maura has replaced him on Kerry County Council and I wish herall the best in her new role. In terms of formation of a new Government Ihave stated on radio and in national newspapers that in the interest of thegood of the Country that Fine Gael and Fianna Fail should come togetherand form a Government or that Fianna Fail should back Fine Gael in aminority Government. Both parties have formed a coalition to controlKerry County Council and I believe that such co-operation could bereplicated on a national level.Repairs funding after severe weather. I welcome funding for repairworks received from the Dept. of Transport, Tourism & Sport, furtherfunding should be received in April. I want to thank the Kenmare AreaEngineer Vincent Horgan and his staff for their work on the submission. The Kenmare Engineers Area received a total of €659,225.00. Please letme know of other places where repairs are needed and I will bring them tothe attention of the Council.Kenmare Pier navigational lights. Kenmare pier has received a grant fornavigational lights of €22,500 the total cost of works is €30,000. This isimprove safety for boat users on the bay.Hedge Cutting. In January and the first week of February Kerry CountyCouncil cut approximately 70km of roadside hedges in the KenmareEngineers Area. The Council cut on the National routes and where the

Council owned land on the regional routes. As usual junctions wherevisibility was impeded also got cut along with the roads that surfacing isto take place on later in the year. Unfortunately due to resources localroads are not included, this is something I will continue to push for. Drainage on our roads. The Council have been carrying out drainageworks and opening water tables on our national routes funded through theroads maintenance budget, I will be demanding more is done especiallyon our regional and local roads as some of these roads have deterioratedgreatly due to inadequate drainage on the sides of roads during the wettestyear on record.South Kerry Development Partnership. As a former board member Ihave seen the positive contribution the partnership makes to communities,I have arranged for them to give a presentation at the next meeting of theSouth & West Kerry Municipal District. Updates will be given on futurerural scheme projects, local Tus Community Work Placement initiatives, involving people with disabilities in community projects and other issuesthe partnership is involved with.Reception for victorious Templenoe football team. What isMindfulness?Mindfulness is learningto direct our attention toour experience as itunfolds, with open-minded curiosity, kindness andacceptance. Rather thanworrying about whathas happened or mighthappen, it trains us toexplore and respondskilfully, rather thanreact, to whatever ishappening right now, whether we like it or not.

Learning to say YES to exploring everything, thoughts, emotions, sensations, and mental processes, can lead to an inner knowing how to work with and copewith stressful situations, improve self esteem, to find more ease andcontentment in all of life, both the pleasant and unpleasant aspects.

In recent years research in neuroscience has made compelling discoveriesabout the brain’s capacity to grow and change, including evidence thatmindfulness helps to increase our ability to be more positive and creative.Researchers at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard University hasshown, using MRI brain scanning technology, that eight weeks of MBSRtraining leads to the thickening of a number of different regions of the brainassociated with learning and memory, emotion regulation, the sense of self andperspective taking.

They also found that areas associated with stress and anxiety were thinnerafter the eight week course.

Darina is a qualified Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction Trainer and yogateacher. She graduated from the Institute of Mindfulness Based Approaches, andshe offers eight week MBSR (Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction) courses in apurpose built Geodesic Dome. She is drawn to the secular, practical approach ofthis course, and says, ‘It is a programme that is accessible to everybodywhich encourages a shared learning experience.’ Recently she has completed courses run by the Mindfulness In Schools Project(MISP) in Dublin and London, and hopes to introduce mindfulness into schools.

Tuosist invites you all to tea!Over the winter, a new committeehas come together based atTuosist Parish Hall, with theintention of developing the Halland overseeing its use. This Hall, built by local people in the 1940s,is the largest public hall betweenKenmare and Allihies, and it’s afantastic resource for the wholecommunity. There is a big spacefor big crowds, with a stage and storage rooms, and a smaller kitchen whichis being re-developed into a cosy meeting room for smaller groups. The newcommittee are applying for funding to upgrade the facilities somewhat, withplans currently under development.

The committee would like to invite any group in the Tuosist area to comeand use this facility for their meetings, functions or activities, large or small. The rent for the Hall is set at two different rates to cater for all group sizes.€25 gives you use of the whole space, including the main Hall and thekitchen, for a session of up to three hours, with use of all the heaters andkitchen facilities (if you need longer than that, it’s just €5 more per hour). Ifyou are part of a smaller group, come and try the smaller meeting room forjust €10 euro per session. To find out more, or to take a look, contact thechair of the new committee Maria Ward on 0872833442.

Another new development over the winter has been the Tuosist Tea Party. It’s a chance for neighbours to come together after dinner in the evening fora cup of tea, coffee or a soft drink and a slice of cake or a scone. It’s a chanceto hear the news, to make new friends and catch up with old ones. They havebeen very successful evenings so far, and everyone is invited to come alongto the next one on Tuesday April 12th at 8pm (a slightly later time, to allowfor the longer evenings).

Ubi EvansIt is with great sadness that we report the final departure of a greatcraftsman from the Kenmare market. Ubi Evans 'the belt man', whodied on Wednesday the 16th of March following a short illness, will beremembered by all who knew him as a generous man with a wry senseof humour whose dedication to the quality of his work was aninspiration to all.

Ubi began to design and craft his own leather belts of the highestquality in the mid 60's. He's love of nature brought him to live in Hay-on-Wye in Wales and West Cork before bring his craft and character tothe Beara peninsula where he set-up a home and established 'The BearaBelt' company.

Thank you, Ubi, for all you brought to us. You enhanced our minds,as well as our wardrobes, and we bid you the most heartfelt farewell onyour final journey.

At last the weather has begun to pick up with severaldays without rain which is what we have all beenlooking for all year ! With the cool dry wind and thebit of sunshine the ground is beginning to dry upfairly well and it has been able to start getting thespring clean under way in the garden…so withoutfurther ado we better start looking at what needs doin’!

1. The lawn is nearly overrun with moss at themoment due to the constant rain we have had sincelast summer, grass growth is very uneven and veryuntidy looking. So, to get things started, the mowershould be brought out of winter retirement ( give themower a check over for oil, spark plug..etc beforeusing )and the lawn should be given a cut, not toolow, but low enough to provide a neat finish. Nextjob, will then be to scatter some Lawn feed with mossand weed killer, just before it is going to rain. Thisrain will help wash the fertilizer/chemicals in. Withina few days the moss will start turning brown as it diesback. The weeds will take a little longer and at thesame time the grass is beginning to put on a spurt ofgrowth as it starts to feel the benefits of the fertilizer.Don’t mow again for two weeks..then its back tomowing again and a lot of the moss will be picked upby the mower as it dries out and loosens itself fromthe ground.2. If you are interested in planting a HEDGE orbare –root trees, this is the time to do it as buds willbe beginning to burst very soon and plants will needto be rooting away in the ground prior to this, so get itplanted by the end of March to allow for betterestablishment.3. FRUIT trees and bushes should also be planted

as soon as possible as their flowering period is aboutto begin.4. SPRING window boxes and PATIOCONTAINERS can be planted up with a range offlowering plants to bring early colour to the garden.Spring bulbs that have been pot grown can be plantedinto these containers with Pansy, Viola, Primrose andSinetti Cinneraria..etc with some evergreen plants togive the splash of colour for Easter and on until it istime to plant up the summer bedding at the end ofApril.5. SUMMER flowering tubers and corms likeDAHLIA, BEGONIA and LILLIES can be plantednow for summer flowering.6. In the VEGE garden there is plenty to do nowas early potatoes can be planted and main crops can

be sprouting away inside for another few weeks. Ifthere is a chance of frost you can earth up theemerging shoots over the next month or so and thiswill save them from getting scorched. Prepare groundfor sowing vegetable crops from the beginning ofApril. Early sowings can be carried out inside in seedtrays and various plant containers so they can beplanted out once all frost is over for the year. Inpolythene tunnels sowings should be underway formost vegetable crops but again be careful for coldnights and prepare to cover the young plants withsome ‘fleece’ for extra protection. Use slug traps orslug bait for about a week before planting to catch thefirst wave of slugs before planting.7. Now is also a good time for planting up newtrees and shrubs in your garden. Rhododendrons andAzaleas will be coming in to flower soon and plentyto choose from in the garden centre.8. PRUNE your ROSE bushes as well as FRUITtrees as soon as you can now and remember to prunespring flowering shrubs immediately after they havefinished flowering.9. ALPINES will always provide a burst of springcolour in yellows, blues and whites. Aubretia, Arabis,Iberis and Camanulas are all very reliable performers, weather resistant and will spread and get bigger everyyear.10. And a final note to say, ENJOY ! enjoy yourgarden, the sunshine, the fresh air and the colour andplant combinations you create ! Happy gardening !

See you all out at WILLOWFIELD as the gardenseason gains momentum !

Vets warn of the risks of Leptospirosis during the recent floodingWhilst this winters floods have had a devastatingeffect on the businesses and families involved, vetsare also warning pet owners in flooded areas ofadditional risks to pets and dogs in particular.Leptospirosis is a severe and often fatal water-borne illness caused by the bacteria Leptospira.

Leptospirosis is a bacterial infection that can bepassed between animals and humans. It istransmitted through contact with infected animalurine mainly from rats and it can contaminatepuddles, rivers, ponds and flood water. In its earlystages, Leptospirosis is often hard for vets todiagnose. But if left untreated it can quicklyprogress to potentially fatal liver or kidney failure.

Even if treated early with antibiotics, infecteddogs can carry the bacteria in their urine formonths or even years and spread the disease toother dogs and even you! With water levels risingacross the country - and therefore a largerlikelihood of contact with rats - humans and theirpets are potentially at a higher risk of developing

the condition.Vet Carina Mederle said: “It is vital to double

check your dogs vaccination status with regard toLeptospirosis at the moment if they are beingwalked in flooded areas.”

She adds, "Weil's disease typically enters thebody through cuts and scrapes, or the lining of thenose, mouth, throat or eyes"If you are in an area that has been affected byflood water, it is essential that your pet has anycuts and abrasions covered and avoids splashingand swallowing water."Where possible, you should thoroughly wash yourpet after coming into contact with flood waters." How to prevent leptospirosis in dogs.Check your dogs vaccination status. Dogs that arenot vaccinated, or whose vaccinations have lapsedare at risk of contracting the disease. Remembervaccinations need to be boostered on an annualbasis and a simple, painless injection is all that isneeded to protect your pet against this potentially

life threatening condition. Please contact the clinicif you are unsure about your pets’ vaccinationstatus, and our staff can advise you.Symptoms of leptospirosis in dogs.Early signs of leptospirosis can be vague and non-specific making diagnosis difficult in the firstphase of the disease. However developingsymptoms can include lethargy, vomiting anddiarrhoea, fever as well as muscular pain with thedog appearing to experience stiffness or difficultymoving.Treatment of leptospirosis in dogs.Dogs suspected to be suffering with leptospirosisare treated with a combination of antibiotics andrehydration therapy. Care must be taken inhandling a dog with leptospirosis to preventcontracting the disease. If you are concerned that your dog may be at riskof leptospirosis Kenmare Veterinary Centre foradvice.

Inbhear Scéine Gaels Ladies FootballMarie O’Sullivan Morgan and Mossie Walshwere honoured in a special celebration andreunion recently in the Sneem Tavern. Players, members and coaches, both past and present, turned out to officially acknowledge and thankMarie and Mossie for their outstanding long-term dedication and commitment to ladiesfootball the Sneem and Kenmare areas. Thenight was brimming with decades of clubhistory, accolades, photographs, stories, musicand dancing ‘til late! A huge thanks to allinvolved in organising every aspect of this trulymemorable occasion.A bit of history! The first ladies football team inthe area was founded in Templenoe in 1973/74under the management of Denis Cremin. Thisteam was up and running for two years andcompeted well at the time. Marie O’SullivanMorgan came on board in 1977 and took on therole of treasurer and county board delegate -little did she know that she would carry on thelatter role until 2015!!The Sneem Ladies Football Club was first

established in late 1999 and started competing in2000. Marie O’Sullivan Morgan of Tahilla andAnne Browne Burns both wanted to set up asports organisation for females, so they joinedideas and enthusiasm over a pot of tea in theSneem House that year. John Damien O’Sullivanof the Sneem Tavern agreed to be the clubsponsor and got the Sneem girls their first set ofblack and orange jerseys which have proved tobe very lucky on many occasions! In 2004, four girls came from Kenmare to playwith the Sneem team as Kenmare had no juniorteam at the time. The late Johnny O’SullivanMyles had the bright idea that Kenmare andSneem should join forces to form a junior teamwhich is still together today. The then managerof Sneem ladies John V. O’Sullivan also cameon board and the Sneem/Kenmare ladies footballteam was formed. During this time Mariecontinued to be an integral part in organising thegames, attending county board meetings andgenerally keeping the peace! In 2007 Sean O’Sullivan took over the team

and in 2008 Timmy Clifford took the reins andremained in charge for three years. Many strideswere made during these years with the teamenjoying a well-deserved promotion to Junior A.

In 2011 Mossie Walsh who was anavid supporter of club and even won theaccolade of ‘supporter of the year’ joined thecommittee and subsequently the managementteam where he remained until 2015!During the 2011 season the club reached the

Munster Junior A Championship semi-final andthe team was promoted to the Intermediatechampionship for the following season. The lateTony Looney managed the team during suchsuccess. In 2012 Paddy Doyle and Teddy Doylemanaged the side as they won the Intermediatechampionship and advanced to the IntermediateMunster championship finals. In 2013 Marie &Mossie led the team as they competed inDivision 1 and the Senior Championship for thefirst time in the history of the club! In 2014 Emer O’Sullivan joined Marie &Mossie on the management team and again theteam competed well in the top leagues. PatCondon came on board in 2015 to manage theteam who just came up short in the Division 1

final. For the coming season the club hasstrengthened its senior panel and aims to becompetitive again in the top division under thedirection of Colm Horgan. Best of luck to all ourplayers and coaches for the season ahead. As you can see a lot has happened in ladies

football since the 1970’s, none of which wouldbe possible without the hard work anddedication of people like Marie and Mossie!

Sunday 6th March saw Kenmare Rugby U14s take on Listowel in the first round of theKerry Plate. Kenmare put on a brilliant performance, especially being their first game intransition from Mini Rugby to 15 A Side Game. A more experienced Listowel ran outwinners but Kenmare can take plenty away from this game with a strong scrum, a wellfunctioning lineout and great lines run by the backs.
