1.0 INTRODUCTION

Over the years, KenGen has been involved in

Corporate Social Responsibility activities.

These have specifically targeted communities

living in areas neighbouring the company’s

power installations.

This corporate effort has been driven by the

following:

(i) KenGen’s commitment to being a

responsible corporate citizen

(ii) The company’s belief in adding value

to the livelihoods of neighbouring

communities.

(iii) Its commitment to building and

sustaining long-term relationships with

communities and stakeholders

As a responsible corporate citizen, the

company also recognizes that it cannot operate

in isolation from the environment around it. This

includes local, regional and global business

spheres; communities and stakeholders; project

and financing partners, as well as the natural

environment and its resources.

2.0 KenGen FOUNDATION

Since separation of the company’s

management from Kenya Power and Lighting

Company in 1997, KenGen’s Corporate Affairs

department was responsible for the

implementation of Corporate Social

Responsibility projects. These projects

represented various themes including

education, health, peace initiatives,

infrastructure, culture, sports and humanitarian

aid.

Due to the high number of themes focused on,

the vast scale of target areas, limited financial

resources and internal capacity, high impact

programs could not be effectively implemented.

It is to address this challenge that the company

established a Foundation in 2012 to serve as

the vehicle for up-scaling its Corporate Social

Responsibility projects to Corporate Social

Investment (CSI) programs.

2.1 Governance

KenGen Foundation began its operations in

December 2013 following its registration in

March 2012. It is run by a Managing Trustee

and is governed by a Board of Trustees chaired

by the serving KenGen Managing Director.

The Foundation’s Board of Trustees currently

consists of five internal members who are

KenGen executive members. Four external

members will be engaged from the private

sector.

The Board of Trustees is responsible for

overseeing the operational strategy and

performance of the Foundation. Specifically it

supervises the following:

The Foundation’s program and grant-making

strategy;

Fundraising and investment strategy;

Budgets;

Overall performance and impact of the

Foundation and its programs.

“Corporate Social Responsibility is the continuing commitment by businesses to

behave ethically and contribute to economic development while improving the quality of life of their workforce and their families as well as of the local community and society at large”

[2014, World Business Council For Sustainability

Development]

Corporate Social responsibility is summarized as the ‘triple bottom line’, which is a model that evaluates the impact of a company’s policies on people and the environment as well as profit maximization. Corporate social investing is a strategy for implementing social commitment in a concrete way by using company funds and resources to improve the quality of life in developing or disadvantaged communities [www.ehow.com].

2.0 OBJECTIVES, MISSION AND

VISION OF THE FOUNDATION

4.0 THE FOUNDATION’S PILLARS

In the course of setting up its structures, the

Foundation defined its core and secondary pillars.

This was necessary for streamlined themes that

could be implemented sustainably.

Core Pillars:

These encompass the key programs of focus for

the Foundation and are:

Education Water and Sanitation Environment

Over the years, KenGen through Corporate Affairs

department and recently via the Foundation has

invested over half a billion Kenya shillings (Ksh 500

Million) in promotion of education through

scholarships and installation of infrastructure;

various environmental conservation initiatives as

well as several large scale water projects.

Secondary Pillars:

These are programs that the Foundation is not

actively targeting, but it can get involved in them

from time to time. They include: Economic

empowerment, Health, Sports, Culture and

Humanitarian aid.

5.0 TRANSFORMING KenGen INTO A GIVING

Corporate Social Investment gives back to the

Environment, Communities and the Economy as well.

deliver sustainable programs

that bring change.

5.1 Why does KenGen engage in Corporate

Social Investment?

Because it is the right thing to do

KenGen aims to give back to the environment

and communities which host its operations.

To do social good and create goodwill

KenGen aims to set a good example and

inspire other companies to be socially and

environmentally responsible.

To complement staff’s personal and

professional lives. This is achieved by

encouraging staff to give back through their

participation in Corporate Social Investment

projects.

To maintain its reputation as a responsible

corporate citizen

To market its brand image to consumers,

investors and communities

To manage risk

KenGen does this by establishing and nurturing

long-term relationships with communities living

in proximity to its power plants.

Improves sales and profits

The up-scaling of Geothermal power

generation (use of clean, green energy)

reduces the company’s operational

environmentally friendly.

5.2 Why should I as a KenGen staff get

involved in Corporate Social

Investment (CSI) activities?

Did you know that globally, companies with

thriving Corporate Social Investment (CSI)

programs report increased employee

commitment, performance and job

satisfaction?

A 2003 research by Stanford University in

the USA, found out that employees’ tended

to describe their work lives as more

‘meaningful and enjoyable’ when they

realized their CSI project activities were

making a positive difference in some way.

Involvement in CSI encourages

professional and personal growth

Through various CSI projects, staff

involved have a great opportunity to

develop their leadership and project

management skills. There are

opportunities to meet and mingle with

staff from various stations, as well as

community members from different parts

of the country. This also provides an ideal

way to tour the country while helping

others.

5.3 How can I be a “Giving Employee?

There are 3 main ways in which you can be

a “Giving Employee”:

equipment towards specific

planned or ongoing projects

within our core pillars.

our core pillars
