Dear Parents,
In today’s world, our young are so digitally savvy that they are
more vulnerable to various forms of influences.
It is, therefore, important to instil good moral values in our girls
to give them positive directions and the means to live their
lives to the best of their abilities. Our moral values form the
foundation on which our character develops. Our girls look
towards us as we model the good moral values for them to
grasp and develop their own sense of what is right and wrong.
At Kellock, we have our very own set of Values — GIR3L —
Graciousness, Integrity, Respect, Responsibility, Resilience
and Love. These values are easily remembered by our girls.
While the values are easy to recite, inculcating them can be
a challenge.
With the varied programmes such as Values Education,
Citizen & Character Education, Camps for Life and CCA
carried out at Kellock, we hope to instil in our girls a deep
sense of commitment to the values. Through these many
experiences, our girls will be inspired to have a sense of
humanism, i.e. a deep concern for the well-being of friends,
love for the school and nation.
Together with the values inculcated at home, the Kellock
values form the moral compass for our girls when they are
faced with difficulties and when they have to resolve conflict.
Indeed, translating these values into words and deeds is not
so easy.
However, we are proud to have witnessed the Kellock spirit, the resilience and relentless pursuit of excellence in our performers and school athletes, the selflessness of the teachers and instructors, the bravery and enthusiasm of our girls to give their best and challenge themselves even further at the biennial Singapore Youth Festival (SYF) Arts presentation and at the Zonal and National Sporting events this year.
Thank you girls for sharing your talents and gifts and living up to the saying of our Founder, Blessed
Nicolas Barre:
“The Gifts Given to you are for Others.”
Mrs Christina Manuel Vice-Principal 1

2.2 Parent-Teacher-Child Conference (PTCC) “Students’ confidence, coupled with the evidence they share (on their learning and reflections),
helps parents believe in their children’s ability to succeed in school, which in turn influences
students’ expectations for themselves. In addition, when students describe what they are
learning, where they have succeeded, and where they are struggling, parents are better
equipped to support learning at home.”
~ Chappuis, 2015, p. 292
This year, Kellock introduced PTCC for Primary 1, 5 and 6 levels, a tripartite communication
structure which involved the student, parent and teacher. The PTCC provided both teachers and
parents with insights into the student’s thoughts and feelings about their learning and a better
understanding of her holistic development, strengths, areas for improvement and how she can be
better supported in her learning and development.
During the PTCC, besides Form Teacher’s sharing on students’ cognitive development, the
students who were present, together with their parents, became active participants. Students
were provided with the platform to communicate and demonstrate their learning experiences;
5
knowledge, skills and values acquired to their parents. We believe that students should have a
voice in the learning process. The PTCC is also part of the school’s efforts to develop our students
to be self-directed and reflective learners who take ownership of their learning.
For Primary 1, students led a sharing on their learning in English/Mathematics with their parents.
They also had the opportunity to communicate their strengths and areas for improvement in the
development of social and organisational skills.
The Primary 5 and 6 students took responsibility for their learning by addressing their learning
targets and goals: ‘Where do I want to go?’, ‘Where am I now?’ and ‘How do I get there?’. Students
shared on their achievements against the targets set at the beginning of the year, their reflections
and learning plans with their Parents and Form Teachers. Prior to the PTCC session, Primary 5
and Primary 6 students carried out a student-led sharing at home with the parents on their learning
and reflection in ‘Digital Music Programme’ and at ‘Sungei Buloh Learning Journey’ respectively.
3. Voices of Our Heads of Department
3.1 Student Management Department
Student Leadership @ Kellock
In CHIJ Kellock, we believe that every student has the potential to be developed as a leader
because each child has her own unique abilities and talents. We do it through the ONE (Offer,
Nurture, Excel) approach.
At the Offer level, all students are provided with the platform to learn the principles of leadership
via the Leadership 101 package. This is premised on the belief that every student can lead and
make a difference through ways which they can contribute. Opportunities are then provided
through class leadership roles for students to apply the skills they have learnt from the leadership
lessons they have attended.
At the next level of Nurture, the school provides different leadership tracks for appointments of
NE ambassadors, CCA leaders and prefects for the students with recognisable leadership
qualities. These students make up the second tier of the leadership model and they undergo
training programmes to equip them with leadership skills so that they are competent to assume
their roles. Prefects who are recognized for their distinct leadership qualities are invited to join the
Prefects EXCO where they assume Tier 3 leadership roles.
At the Excel level, these leaders are given more opportunities to engage in meta-cognitive
activities to challenge existing ideas and initiate change at the school level.
6
Student Leaders’ Investiture
One of the key milestone programmes for student
leadership is the installation of prefects. The Prefects’
Investiture was held on 14 March. A total of 85 prefects
from Primary 4 to Primary 6 were installed. They were
selected by their teachers for displaying leadership
qualities, responsibility and compassion towards their
teachers and friends. The Executive Committee
(EXCO) comprises the following prefects:
Jamie Tan (Head Prefect) P6 Lily
Seraphina Low (Vice-Head) P6 Daisy
Clarabelle Lim P6 Daisy
Chloe Tan P6 Hibiscus
Presha Magandharan P5 Allamanda
Tricia-Ann Tan P5 Allamanda
.
After the prefects’ investiture, the school conducted a
simple ceremony on 21 April to install the Tier 2 student
leaders, namely the NE ambassadors and the CCA
leaders on. A total of 31 NE ambassadors and 44 CCA
Leaders were installed. The NE ambassadors were
selected based on their keenness to promote values on
citizenship and be involved in NE commemorative
days. The CCA leaders were selected based on their
interest and ability in the CCA they represent. These
two groups of leaders pledged their commitment to the
school after they have received their badges.

Students’ Voice
We believe that the students must be given a voice in order to develop a sense of belonging and
pride of the school. Hence, different platforms are created for the students to voice their ideas
and opinions. One such platform is the voting of the head prefect position. Students are given an
opportunity to vote for the nominee that best fits the role of the head prefect after listening to the
campaign speeches from the different head prefect nominees.
Another platform for student voice is the student-initiated projects. All students are encouraged to
drop their suggestions into the school’s suggestion box and the prefect EXCO will evaluate these
suggestions and present them during morning assemblies. Some of these suggestions may even
be implemented by the students. They are valuable input from the students that will improve the
overall well-being of the students.
Student leaders are also encouraged to spearhead student-initiated projects based on the
sensing of the general needs of the students. This year, the student leaders would like to work on
improving the discipline of the students in the school bus and there are plans to educate the
students on acceptable school bus etiquette.
Values Alive Series
The Values Alive series is an assembly programme helmed by the student leaders. The focus for
this year is on the value of resilience. Appointed student leaders research on people who have
demonstrated and lived out the value of resilience and present the stories to the student
population at morning assemblies.
It is hoped that by sharing these stories, it will serve to inspire and motivate the students
understand what it means to bounce back when they are faced with challenges and not to give
up in life.
Friend of Singa
Every year, a group of student leaders is selected to represent the school in participating in the
Friend of Singa award organised by the Singapore Kindness Movement. This year, the theme for
Friend of Singa is ‘Let’s Appreciate! Pass it On’.
The student leaders made a decision to focus their effort on showing their appreciation to the staff
of the school who work behind the scenes. They are the school’s cleaners, canteen vendors and
security guards. The student leaders will be paying tribute to them and recognising their role and
contributions to the school.
To do that, they have planned simple activities such as getting the school to write messages of
appreciation, organising a “Volunteers’ Day” and conducting an assembly talk to raise awareness
of the roles and responsibilities of these people.
We believe that these acts of kindness will go a long way in bringing a smile to their faces.

3.2 Character & Citizenship Education and Partnership
Parents’ Symposium 2016 – Enriching Minds and Engaging Lives
More than 200 CHIJ Kellock parents attended this
year’s Parents’ Symposium held in the school. The
theme for this year’s symposium is ‘Enriching Minds
and Engaging Lives’. This year’s keynote
presentation on ‘I Can’t Live Without IT – Engaging
the IT and Smart Phone Generation’ by Touch Cyber
Wellness Manager, Mr Chong Ee Jay, was well
received by parents who found the topic interesting
and relevant.
The symposium included hands-on workshops,
sharing sessions and activities, where parents
learned how to better engage their daughters in the
learning of the various subjects, as well as receiving
parenting tips on family and parenting issues.
Feedback from parents was extremely positive, with
many stating that the workshops were engaging and
well delivered by teachers and they look forward to
Parents’ Symposium 2017!
Keep Singapore Clean Movement – Spring Cleaning and Kellock Daily Cleaning Routine
In line with the ‘Keep Singapore Clean Movement’
which advocates a clean Singapore, CHIJ Kellock
students proudly shouldered the responsibility of
cleaning their classrooms. Through the termly Spring
Cleaning activity, students cleaned their classrooms,
tables and chairs, cleared their lockers and packed
their class library to ensure a good closure to the term.
Spring-cleaning day also provides a great platform for
students to demonstrate our school values of
responsibility and graciousness as they work together
as a class, helping one another to complete their
cleaning task.
To further inculcate a sense of responsibility and good
life habits, the Kellock Daily Cleaning Routine was
also introduced in Term 1 this year to make classroom
cleaning a daily affair for students. At the end of the
school day, classical music will be played as students
proceed to carry out some basic cleaning of their
classrooms. This routine ensures a cleaner classroom
environment, thus promotes better learning.
Spring Cleaning is a meaningful and fun
activity for the Kellock Girls!

3.2 Project Work @ Kellock
In line with our school vision of developing each
child’s unique giftedness to lead and make a
difference, VIA-infused Project Work @ Kellock
will be carried out this year across Primary 3, 4
and 5, integrated with various subjects.
Project Work aims to give students the platform to
synthesise knowledge and critically and creatively
apply knowledge to real-life situations. Using
Design Thinking as an approach, students will
make use of real world information and explore
the different ways one can improve the various
situations.
In 2015, the Primary 5 students were guided through a process of discovery, exploration and
finding innovative ways to conserve energy. With the greater awareness of the part each
individual plays in caring for the environment, the students were challenged to be the change they
want to see and to be an advocate for energy conservation.
This year, the students in Primary 3 will be embarking on a project where they will learn about
keeping the environment clean, and hence, creating a cleaner environment for the school and
community. Together with NEA, the students will be guided through a process of empathising with
the janitors, and learning how they can be agents of change in creating the environment they wish
to live in.
As for the Primary 4 students, they will be learning
about the underprivileged in our society, in line
with our yearly Children for Children’s theme.
Students will be empathising with the less
fortunate in our society, and to create stories to
spread awareness of the urban poor, and also of
the values that they have learnt.

5 Parent Support Group (PSG)
From The Vice-Chairperson – Maura Fogarty
It feels like just a few weeks ago when I was welcoming new parents into the PSG at our PSG
Welcome Breakfast in January. And now, we’re at the halfway mark for the school year. Time
flies when you’re having fun!
It’s been an active and event-filled first semester. PSG parent volunteers have been busy
organising activities and programs such as the spectacular International Friendship Day event,
Tutti-Frutti Tuesdays, Chinese Reading Mums & Dads and Mother’s Day craft sales. And there
is more to come in the second half of the year.
Photographs of PSG events
We had mentioned in our previous Kellock Connects page that our photographers will be
uploading photos of our events to Kellock’s website. Please note that we will not be doing so as
we need to comply with the school’s policy on photo publication and distribution (under the
Personal Data Protection Act). If you want photos of any particular event, please contact the
event’s sub-committee head or email to [email protected] to request for a private
distribution. We appreciate your understanding towards this matter.
Parent Support Group Semester Newsletter – The Hand-In-Hand *NEW!
Look out for our half-yearly newsletter, coming your way! It showcases what we’ve done, a look-
ahead to what’s in store and some useful tips and profiles of current PSG volunteers.
Coming UP in Term 3…
RACIAL HARMONY DAY 21 July 2016
The PSG is continuing to support the school in its National
Education initiatives. Last year’s kampong-spirit games
during Racial Harmony Day was so successful, we’re doing
it again, this time with a twist. We’d like to ask Daddies in
particular, if they could help us out on Racial Harmony Days.
If there are any Daddies interested, we’d love to hear from
you. Please contact Celine Abueg @
[email protected] . Mummies are welcome too!

CHILDREN’S DAY 10 October 2016
We are going big on Children’s Day this year! And we’ll need all the
parent support we can get! On Children’s Day, 10 October, Kellock will
be transformed into one giant Carnival! Think games, activities,
dancing, and more! To pull off such a large event successfully, we’ll
need volunteers, donations, prizes, etc. The entire Children’s Day
carnival budget is sponsored by the PSG. If you’d like to help in any
way, please contact us at [email protected].
PRIMARY 6 GRADUATION 11 November 2016
One of the highlights of the year for the PSG is the P6 Graduation party. It is always such a
delight seeing the girls relax, have fun and mark their journey onwards to secondary school. Even
though this is usually one of the last items on our calendar, parent volunteers have already started
planning. If you have any questions or would like to help in some way, do let us know!
