Aeronautical Engineering has made momentous strides i n the 54 yea r s s i n c e the fi r s t flight of heavier-than -air machines. Since the W right Brot hers fi rs t a i r pI a n e to today 's supersonic fighters, the aircra f t industry ha s seen many changes . T oday's aircraft designers and builders work as a team . Indi vidual engineers concentrate their effort on small pha ses of the overa ll project, resul ting in a co mplicated but efficient design . M ore and mo re scientific knowled ge is necessary t o keep pa ce with today 's adva·nced airc raft. The impo rtan ce of basic knowledge in the fie ld s of mathematics, physics, and mechanics is becoming more apparent. The Aeron autical Engineering Dep a rt men t at I n d i a n a Tech n i c a I C o II c g e strives t o have the student well prepared in the ba sic sc iences before the advanced aero na uti cal t op ics are undertaken . A graduate with a B.S . d egree in Aeronautical Engin eerin g may enter ma ny pha ses o f t he aeronauti cal field. Electron ic Eng ineering is a highly specialized branch of Electrical Enginee ring . The import ance of elect ronics is recognized as a f ie I d of e n g i nee r in g i n its own r i q h t . To the Electronic Engineer is attributed outst anding development in such realm s as guided miss iles , radar, color telev ision, electronic computer, radio communication, and atomic energy . The fie I d of Me chan i c a I Engineering is so broad that no man can be an c1u thority on all
of its branches. Consequently, M echanical
Engineers tend to become spec ialists in chosen bra nches . Therefore, the st udent is
given a thorough background in the ba sic

practically every manufactured article requires the se rvices of mecha n ica I engineers
both in the design of the machine on which
