Ranking Departments of Economics and Management in Ukraine

Introduction

Graduates of secondary schools in Ukraine soon will have to choose to which university to

apply. To guide them in their choice a number of rankings of universities have appeared in recent

years:

Kompas. This university ranking is based on surveys of experts, alumni and employers

and can be found at site http://www.yourcompass.org . Besides an overall ranking,

Kompas provides rankings by subjects, for economics and management, law, technical

science, IT and architecture;

National library of Ukraine ranking. This ranking uses the number of publications and

number of citations in Scopus, a large bibliographic database. No subject specific ranking

is provided. The overall ranking can be found at

Top-200. This ranking is composed by the Ukrainian UNESCO Chair according to 3

criteria: quality of scientific and pedagogical potential, quality of education and

international recognition. More detailed information can be found at link

Here we provide an additional ranking which is discipline specific (we focus on economics)

and based on objective criteria rather than on subjective views of experts or employers. Hence

this ranking is complementary to the existing rankings.

The KEI rating is based on the performance of the students of given universities in a

number of scientific competitions. The assumption here is that we can consider the students as

the output of their university program and hence, that a students performance can be used as an

indicator of the programs success. Of course, we are aware that this is a strong assumption.

Indeed, it is possible that good students are attracted to some universities that have a good

reputation, even if those universities might not add anything to their knowledge as such. A

ranking based on student performance could thus reflect not the contribution of the university but

rather how good it is at attracting good students.The current ranking is based on students performance:

in the KSE Olympiads (both the Olympiad in economics and quantitative

methods and the Olympiad in economics and finance),

the results of the Zavtra.UA competition in the field of economics and

entrepreneurship;

the Casechamp competition.

We use the results of the KSE Olympiad of the last 2 years (the Olympiad is organized 2

times per year, so we have four Olympiads), of the Zavtra.UA competition for the last three years

and of the Spring 2011 Casechamp competition

The Zavtra.UA competition is organized by the Viktor Pinchuk foundation for students

who have studied at least 3 years at a university of the 3-rd or 4-th level of accreditation

Applicants submit papers related to their subject of study, one of these subjects is Economics

and Management

The competition evaluates students according to the 3 criteria: personal achievements, the

submitted paper and the persons potential. In our ranking, we use scores received for scientific

activities and for the submitted economics papers. A universitys score on this competition is the

average of the universitys economics and management students score on the submitted paper

(maximum is 60 point) and the scientific achievement (maximum is 8 points). We have data for

559 students who participated in this competition.

The KSE Olympiad is organized twice a year. The Olympiads test knowledge in Micro

and Macroeconomics, Game Theory and Finance.

A universitys score on this competition is the average of the universitys economics and

management students score on the Olympiad test. The number of students who participated over the four Olympiads is 912.

The Casechamp is competition for students and recently graduated students and focuses

on solving business cases. The competition consists out of 3 stages qualification round, semi-

finals and final. During the qualification round each team proposes a solution to a business case.

This case is graded and given a score between 0 and 100. This score is used in our ranking. The

data from Casechamp 1 is available for the Spring 2011 competition, in which 103 teams

participated, each teams consisting of 3, 4 or 5 persons.

We selected these three competitions because:

these competitions are well advertised and open to all students who are interested;

they provide objective measures of students knowledge and skills;

data for them can easily be obtained.

Methodology

The average score of a university is calculated as the average score of the students who

participate in a competition. For the KSE Olympiad, the maximum score is 20. For Zavtra.UA

the maximum score is 60 for paper and 8 for scientific achievements (publications, participation

in conferences and Olympiads). For Casechamp, the maximum score is 100. We first provide the

ranking based on each of these competitions Then we provide an overall ranking. This overall

ranking which takes into account the four individual rankings is based on an unweighted average

of the standardized scores on each ranking

Results

The rating of universities according to the KSE Olympiad can be found below in Table 1.

One can see, from the column Average number of students from the university, that several

universities have only a few students who participated in these competitions for those

universities the average score is likely to be a very imprecise measure of the underlying quality of

the university as the effect of outliers (universities can be lucky if only one exceptional student

participated or unlucky if only a weak students participated). Hence we also provide a ranking

for universities which are represented at all competitions and the average is based on at least 10

students.

While we present a ranking of universities, it is also important to note the standard

deviation of the scores presented in column Standard deviation of average score. Remember

that not all students of a school participate but only a (self) selected group of students and

hence that our average score is only an estimate of the true university score which we would

obtain if all students would participate in the competitions. The standard deviations thus provides

an indicator of uncertainty and to the extent that one universitys score is within 2 standard

deviations away from another universitys score one can say that these universitys score are not

significantly different from each other. In fact, it is hard to find significant differences betweenmany universities and hence one should interpret this ranking (like the other rankings which do

not publish standard errors) with care.

The overall rank can be found in Table 4. The number of students participated in

competition is the sum of students from some university who participated in the Zavtra.UA, KSE

and Casechamp competitions (the number of persons that participated in the Casechamp is

calculated as the number of teams multiplied by 3 as 3 is the minimum required number of persons in team). Number of competitions indicates the number of competition in which the

students of university took part. The average score is calculated as the sum of unweighted

averages of standardized scores divided by the number of competition in which the universitys

student has taken part.
