Tornadoes. Terrifying. Dangerous. Deadly. Every year, tornadoes kill about 60 people and do millions of dollars of damage in the United States of America. For the people of Dixie Alley, in the southern part of the US, tornadoes are a part of life.
These scientists research tornadoes. They are called ‘Storm Chasers’. They knew that the 27th of April 2011 was no ordinary day in Dixie Alley.
They want to drive their special car into a tornado to study it. But first, they have to find one.
F5 tornadoes have winds higher than 400 kilometres per hour. This one is over a kilometre wide. It’s too dangerous to drive the car into. But they can still help the people of Dixie Alley.
The tornado crosses the road. The team watches, but there is nothing they can do.
