DOG FOULING.
Once again the Parish
Council has received several
more complaints regarding
dog fouling. The majority of
dog owners/walkers in South
Cave behave responsibly
and give regard and respect
to all of us, but unfortunately
there are a few who make
our pavements unpleasant
places to walk and spoil our
lovely village. We are
fortunate in having a
generous amount of bins
and whilst the dogs are not
at fault the owners ARE, IT IS
AN OFFENCE to allow your
dog to foul in a public area.
PLEASE BE A RESPONSIBLE
OWNER OR YOU MAY BE
FINED
Your Opinion matters
Do you have a complaint?
Do you have a
compliment?
All opinions matter and if
the Parish Council do not
know your opinion, they
cannot act. If you have any
comment to make, please
contact the Clerk at The
Town Hall or email

Jutland and The Somme, 1916
Two of the most famous battles of World War I were fought during the summer of 1916. The Battle of Jutland (31 May - 1 June 1916) was the largest naval battle of the war and The Somme (1
st July –
18th November1916) which had been planned to gain
a quick breakthrough, lasted 141 days and resulted in more than a million men, from all sides, being killed, wounded or captured. Men commemorated on the South Cave Roll of Honour and War Memorial served in both battles.
After the Battle of Jutland, The Hull Times, 17th June,
1916, reported:
Three South Cave lads who were in the Naval
battle are home on leave. Stoker George Freer,
of West End, who was on HMS – [Blank] … looks
none the worse for his experience.
Stoker George Freer was on HMS Southampton, which was seriously damaged (35 men were killed and over 40 injured). The other seamen were probably Able Seaman Frederick L Thomas (on the battleship HMS Valiant) and Stoker William Featherstone (on HMS Diligence) or ERA Henry S

Brown (on HMS Minotaur). Fortunately none was killed during the battle.
Of the four local men, whom we know fought in The Somme, sadly two were killed. Pte Arthur Freer (brother of George, who survived Jutland) died just after his 21
st birthday. He had been in France for
only two months. A month later Pte Harry Donkin was killed, his brother, Herbert, died two years later. At least two others survived the battle: Pte (Henry) Harry Dennis, who had emigrated to Canada and fought with the Saskatchewan Regiment, and Pte Maurice Leake, whom local people recognised in the film of the Battle of the Somme.
The Treasure House, Beverley, will be Remembering the Somme in an exhibition from 25
th June to 10
th
September, 2016. The original newsreel film of the Battle of the Somme will be shown on 23
rd July, 2pm,
in Beverley Memorial Hall, with a narration by Andy Robertshaw, a military historian, (£5). Also, there will be a free screening of this film at the Early Music Centre, Walmgare, York on Sunday 13
th November
2016.
We remember all who served and especially those
who gave their lives for their country.

Yes,it's time again to set your sights on
the rapidly approaching SOUTH CAVE SHOW.
It's no sooner over than, from an
organisational point of view, we have to
start work making arrangements for the
following year. This year we are well on
our way: the new schedule should be
available in May and we are in the process
of talking to our many sponsors. Have you
planned all your activities for this
growing season:-seeds ordered, winter
digging completed, handicraft decisions
made or encouraging your children as young
as 5 years old to get involved? Gentlemen,
remember we have a MEN ONLY class just for
you - it's banana tea bread this year!
We are this year re-introducing a teenage
section for those children who now no
longer qualify for our under 12 years old
classes. We failed to generate any interest
in our teenagers a few years ago so we hope
now that the juniors who have outgrown the
children's classes will graduate to the new
"grown up" classes.
So, there's no excuse,ladies, gentlemen,
teenagers and children, we expect a full
turn out again this year to help make the
Show one of the best ever!! That's not too
much to ask is it?

Have you seen our new web site -
www.southcaveshow.co.uk? Jeny Clarkson has
spent a great deal of time bringing it up
to date. We think it looks great so do have
a look and let us know what you think.
You will be pleased to know that our
photographic classes for this year are:-
1) Transport
2) Weather
3) Flower(s)
We have been delighted with the number of
entries we have received during the last
few years - an ever-increasing number which
reflects the growing enthusiasm for this
particular activity. Again - keep it up!!!
We must yet again thank all our sponsors
for their continued support. Without you
the Show could not go on. Do you realise
that almost every village activity gives us
something, be it money, vouchers or gifts
for our Raffle and Tombola. This must mean
something - could it be that they value the
importance of the South Cave Show and hope
to see it continue well into the future? We
think so!!
