I’d like to get rid of it but I don’twant a face lift or anything major”.Liposuction offers surgeons theability to reduce excess fat, removebulges, and improve body propor-tions. These benefits have beenenjoyed by millions of patients overthe last few decades and are par-ticularly attractive because they canbe directed toward areas that areoften unresponsive to diet andexercise programs. Consequently

it is not surprising that liposuctionhas grown in popularity to becomethe most common cosmetic surgi-cal procedure in North America. In its’ simplest form liposuction islittle more than a minimally-invasivevacuum for body fat. The suctionis introduced into the fat layersusing a thin cannula insertedthrough tiny incisions. This force,combined with the mechanicalefforts of the surgeon, results inremoval of the excess fat tissue.

While this basic concept hasremained relatively unchanged overthe years, other innovations havedramatically improved the safetyand effectiveness of liposuctionoverall.

Energy-assisted LiposuctionOver roughly the last 20 years sur-geons have directed much atten-tion toward technologies that applysome form of energy to the fat tis-sue prior to suctioning. For the pur-poses of this article I will refer tothese collectively as “energy-assist-ed” liposuction techniques. Generally these techniques makepreliminary use of some form ofenergy, introduced through a can-nula, to melt or break down the fat.This step is followed by suctionremoval of the products in a moretraditional manner. Virtually every

conceivable type of energy hasbeen employed and marketed atone time or another, with varyingdegrees of success. Some ofthese technologies have includedultrasonic liposuction, laser-assist-ed, power-assisted, water-assisted,and so on. Regardless of the actual technolo-gy employed the net effect of thesemodern liposuction innovations isthat removal of excess fat is easierthan ever before. The real aestheticchallenge lies with management ofthe leftover skin; removal of “toomuch” fat can yield unsightly foldsand ripples, much like abdominalskin that fails to completely tighten-up after pregnancy. Skin withpoorer initial tone, as seen afterweight loss, is more susceptible tothese consequences and has traditionally been best treated with

excisional procedures like a tummy tuck. This cannula is insertedthrough small incisions into the target area as forregular liposuction. Unlike other energy-assistedliposuction technologies, however, BodyTite™ is asingle-stage process, both melting and simultane-ously removing fat. This process allows for a fastertreatment, more easily extended to large areas. TheRF energy works gently, even in tough, fibrous areaslike the back and male chest that have typicallyproven challenging for traditional liposuction. want/need a full facelift. Theseminimally-invasive techniques offerminimal downtime and essentiallyno scars. They are also single-stage treatments as opposed tomost externally-based skin-rejuven-tation technologies. Abdomen – the abdomen is acommon area for accumulation ofexcess fat but also diminished skintone, particularly after weight fluctu-ations. The advantages ofBodyTite™ allow improvement inboth of these problems and theexciting opportunity to provide thetightening effect of a tummy tuckbut without the long scar.Male breast (gynecomastia) –while the fat component of themale chest responds to conven-tional liposuction, the rubbery, firmbreast tissue typically requiresdirect surgical excision with thecreation of a visible scar. R E C O V E R YMen are particularly resistant tolong periods of downtime andrecovery after surgery; they areoften keen to get back to work, hitthe gym and engage in sports inshort order. Fortunately most menfind recovery after BodyTite™ is arelatively rapid and comfortableprocess. Normal but temporaryconsequences include mild dis-comfort, swelling, and bruising.Patients should expect to wearelastic compression garmentsunder regular clothing for 4-6weeks to encourage resolution ofswelling and facilitate skin contrac-tion. Most are able to resume lightactivities almost immediately andusually return to work within severaldays.

BodyTite™ surgery is most oftenperformed using local anestheticand some form of sedation, almostalways on an outpatient basis. Patients should also expect numb-ness of the skin surface in thetreated areas with return to normalsensation after several months.The final results will declare them-selves over time. At least 3months must pass after BodyTite™treatment for swelling to resolveand the skin-tightening process tocomplete but some patients willnotice continued skin contractionfor up to 6 months after surgery.
