ANSWERING THE CALLWhat an exciting year it has been for us as we celebrated the 35th anniversary of Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central Indiana (RMHCCIN). Since opening our doors on October 14, 1982, our mission has remained constant. As the need to serve families has continued to grow and evolve throughout our 35-year history, we’ve always found a way to say “YES”.

• YES to opening the first Ronald McDonald House in the state of Indiana • YES to doubling the size of the House just seven years after opening our doors • YES to opening a new House inside Riley Hospital for Children

2017 COMMUNITY GRANT RECIPIENTSRonald McDonald House Charities of Central Indiana (RMHCCIN) extends its reach to the broader community by awarding grants to other 501(c)(3) local charitable organizations and programs that directly improve the lives of children.

Beneficiaries of RMHCCIN grants are local 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations that have demonstrated an ability to respond to the needs of children and their families in a definitive, hands-on manner, yielding measurable results.

Because of your steadfast support we said “YES” to more than 5,000 families last year and we are working hard to continue to expand our reach and find more ways to say “YES” to more families in need – including saying “YES” to opening a new Family Room inside of Riley Hospital for Children at Indiana University Health! This new space will be an oasis for families in Riley Hospital’s forthcoming maternity wing and will provide a welcome respite from the stressors of the hospital.

Accomplishing these goals wouldn’t be possible without the compassionate and caring community that surrounds our families with love and support each day. Our RMHCCIN village consists of more than 300 individual volunteers and nearly 1,000 groups who donated almost 34,000 hours of their time last year. Our volunteer meal providers plan, shop, prepare and serve meals to our families twice a day at both of our locations – a service that we hear time and time again makes a world of difference to our tired and stressed-out families. We have a dedicated Board of Directors focused on the health of our organization so that we can continue to grow our impact, and a hardworking team of staff that works around the clock – 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year – to provide the comfort and care that our families need. Our growing list of community partners includes talented individuals and corporations whose expertise helps us maintain our Houses, hundreds of in-kind contributors who keep our shelves and pantries full and so many generous stakeholders whose donations help us underwrite family stays.

It is with great optimism that we look to our future and at finding new and innovative ways to continue to enhance the quality of life for children from Indiana and around the world. What started as an ambitious dream decades ago has now blossomed into one of the region’s most important lifelines for children and families – and it would not have been possible without each of you.

For all that you do to help keep families together and near the care they need, thank you.

Congratulations 2017 Grant Recipients:

As 2-month-old Amelia quietly sleeps in the arms of her mother, oblivious to the excitement around her, parents Jason and Leslie know the hard-fought battle that it has taken to get to this very special day. Today is the day they get to take their baby daughter home to Evansville, IN.

Parents to four other children, Leslie’s pregnancy with Amelia began just as her others had — normal and predictable. Still, given a family history of heart disease, doctors recommended additional testing. It was then that Amelia was diagnosed with Ebstein’s anomaly, a rare congenital heart defect. Shortly after her birth, cardiologists at Riley Hospital for Children at Indiana University Health discovered that Amelia had also developed pulmonary atresia, a condition blocking blood flow to her lungs.

At just 11 days old, Amelia underwent her first surgery. The next day, her oxygen levels dropped so dramatically, that Amelia was placed on a heart and lung bypass machine. Weeks went by and Amelia began to grow stronger, but just shy of an hour before doctor’s prepared to release her from the NICU, she suddenly turned blue and splotchy. Amelia’s new shunt had malfunctioned, completely blocking all blood flow through her heart. Doctors quickly intubated Amelia, saving her life.

Scared and unsure of what each day could bring, the Webbs sought comfort at Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central Indiana (RMHCCIN) knowing that they could stay by Amelia’s side every step of the way. For nearly two months, the Ronald McDonald House became their “home-away-from-home” with comfortable beds, hot showers, home-cooked meals and the support of staff, volunteers and other RMHCCIN families to help keep them strong.

“We met so many parents just standing outside or walking in the House that we got to chat with, find out about their child and we talked about our child,” Jason recalls. “Some of these people become family.”

During her hospital stay, Amelia was able to bond with her older siblings, a moment which Jason and Leslie say wouldn’t have been possible without the Ronald McDonald House. The Webb family has a long road ahead of treatments and procedures for Amelia; however, Jason and Leslie remain optimistic and know that they always have a place to turn.

“I can’t even say how much we appreciate being able to be here,” said Leslie. “It brought a sense of normalcy in the madness...there’s always someone to talk to or warm coffee. That is sometimes just what you need…the Ronald McDonald House kept us together.”

2017 SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTSRMHCCIN recognizes the importance of continuing education and the expenses associated with obtaining a college degree. To assist with college finances, RMHCCIN awarded 25 Central Indiana high school seniors each with a $5,000 scholarship. The scholarship recipients were selected based on their academic achievements, community involvement and financial need. Congratulations 2017 Scholarship Award Recipients:

We believe that no family should ever have to worry about the cost of being at their child’s side, especially when they are sick. We are deeply grateful to our room sponsors who help underwrite the cost of a family’s lodging at a time when they need it most.

CORNERSTONE SOCIETY

EXPENSES

The Cornerstone Society was formed to recognize individuals who have included Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central Indiana (RMHCCIN) in their estate plans or a planned gift (such as a gift of life insurance, charitable gift annuity, etc.). Through generous arrangements that name RMHCCIN a beneficiary of a planned gift or estate plan, Cornerstone Society members create ways to achieve their own financial goals while providing RMHCCIN with much needed support for the future.

Since 1982, Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central Indiana has been keeping families together and providing the care they need when it matters most. That care includes providing a “home-away-from-home” for our families. We host various family activities throughout the year to give families a break from the stressful situations they’re faced with so they can be a family.
