President’s ReportOn-Field Success

We had some well-spread success this year, with premierships won in every section, and the highlight beingthe Junior Boys winning the Stan Griffin Shield for the Club Championship.

As club championships are won based on the average performance of every team you have in thecompetition, this means that every boy playing in every game (and every manager, coach and supporter) wasa very real part of that achievement. This is the first year we have won the Stan Griffin as Kedron Wavell –our last win was as City United in 1986.

And, as the year closes, it was great to see another K-Dub women’s player debut for the Hockeyroos –congratulations, Audrey Smith!

Off-field champions

I continue to be amazed by the efforts of those who make our Club happen off the field, organising teams, sections, fund-raising, canteen, uniforms and all the other myriad activities that make it possible for theplayers to run out every week and enjoy hockey. I want to note here my thanks, on behalf of the Club, toevery single one of you and to all of you. I hope you can continue to be as generous with your time in thefuture, and that we can get more players, family and friends involved helping distribute the workload.

Burringbar Park

Kedron Wavell continued to work with BHA and BWHA to ensure a quality facility for our sport is maintained atBurringbar Park and to ensure it remains the ‘Home of Kedron Wavell Hockey’.

The $300,000 grant from the Federal Government has now been formally signed up; and BHMG has anapplication in under the State Government’s current major grants program to progress the second turf.

The town planning around the whole of the Chermside community hub (library, pool, Services Club andBurringbar Park) has recently been reviewed; and happily the whole of the hockey area has been preservedin the plan – despite significant pressures for other developments.

Our Principal Club Sponsor

2014 was the third year of our new sponsorship arrangements with the Services Club, and I want to againacknowledge the enormous support that is provided to our Hockey Club by Kedron Wavell Services Club.

Happily, the Services Club was able to lift their sponsorship back towards the level of previous years.Although not as high as it has been, the increased sponsorship nonetheless allowed us to keep fees downand allowed us to keep the books balanced this year.

Club Management

The Club’s Management Committee and Club Captains did another great job this year, and I was reallypleased to attend another great end-of-season Junior’s function, this year at the Bowls Club in WavellHeights; and then follow with the Senior Presentation night at the Services Club.

That event once again highlighted for me the way in which our supporters, volunteers and parents are theplatform of future success. I was personally delighted to see all of the joy at the recognition given to ourClub’s on-field and off-field supporters. As such, I again urge you to help the Club with whatever time andresources you can spare.

See you at the field in 2015!

Treasurer’s ReportThis Treasurer’s report and the audited Financial Statements that are part of this Annual Report are preparedon a cash accounting basis.

STATEMENT OF INCOME AND EXPENDITURE

2014 resulted in a net profit of $18,472.57 (2013 Loss $11,448.30) for Kedron Wavell Services Hockey Club“The Club”. The improved results for 2014 are resulting from the following items:

50% increase to prior year sponsorship received from our major sponsor Kedron Wavell ServicesClub. This is still 25% less sponsorship than what was received in 2012 and earlier years but we aregrateful for the increased assistance during 2014.

11% decrease in player registration and affiliation fees; this is due to the previously noted 2012Brisbane Hockey Association fees of $28,130.85 being paid in 2013. Removing the 2012 paymentfrom the 2013 numbers shows that player fees increased by $11,896.15 in 2014, this is in addition tothe 52% increase ($12,767.87) in training costs incurred by The Club, these increased costs areoffset by a marginal increase of 6% ($8,401.36) in player fees collected. This provides a challengefor the management committee in how to keep the sport of Hockey affordable to our members withkey costs increasing each year.

At year end the 2014 Senior Presentation dinner expenditure is still outstanding, hence year endfunctions expenditure reporting a decline in expenditure, and this will be resolved in 2015.

The Canteen returned a profit of $10,256.51 for 2014 (adjusted to $7,834.01 as there is a payment for2014 to be made in 2015). This is a 1% decline on prior year (adjusted 24% decline). Sales did notvary 2014 to 2013, however cost of goods sold expenditure increased by 8.8% ($2,212,72). Profitshare payable to BHMG in 2014 based on the 2013 results increased by 93% ($902.16).

BALANCE SHEET

It is pleasing to report that the Net Asset position of the club at year end is stronger than previous years at$41,461.52 (80% increase). As noted above there are some expenses relating to 2014 still to be finalisedhowever The Club again has some cash reserves.

The stronger cash position of The Club is attributed to the efforts of all sections in collection of fees howeverplayers need to be reminded that the 30 April fee payment deadline is critical so that The Club can meet itsfinancial obligations when they fall due.

Thank you to the Section Treasurers and VP’s for all their efforts during 2014 to ensure that fees are collectedand banking and associated reports are completed on-time, your assistance is greatly appreciated.

Men’s Report2014 was a year of considerable development and progress for the Kedron Wolves. The club was the onlymen’s club in Brisbane to field additional teams in the men’s competitions and was also the only club withsignificantly improved playing numbers. This was attributed to good recruitment, low playing fees and thefabulous spirit to be found at the Club.

Results were mixed across the Club. Our first, second and third grade squads are all young and developingteams and as a result finished at the tail end of their competitions however they were far more competitivethan in previous years. The number and talent of juniors competing in these teams are great omens forsuccessful years to come. Eight guys under 19 played regular first grade matches for the Club and theirexperience will stand us in great stead for the future. Kedron was especially proud to re-introduce a team intothe third grade competition this year under the coaching of Paul Nixon. They had some struggles through theyear but fought bravely, enjoyed themselves immensely and came away with some unexpected results.

Our fifth grade squad continued its’ proud tradition of great performances by making the finals for the 687 th

consecutive year. To be honest it probably isn’t 687 straight years but it sure seems like it. Our masters’squad were superb with a premiership in Masters 3 and a grand final appearance by the Masters 2 team.Great work guys!!

2014 saw the introduction of what we hope to be a future tradition for the Club: Captain’s Day. This was a dayearly in the year where all men met for a few hours, played some social hockey, ate some food and the newClub Captain was introduced. This year the club captain was Luke Edwardes-Evans. Luke has been anenthusiastic and inspirational leader and we look forward to his continued involvement as a past club captain.

The Club could not be successful and continue with the hard work and energy of volunteers. In 2014 therewere an extensive number of people who contributed to the season in management, coaching or othersupporting roles. The Men’s Committee: Brian, Andre and Doug, are all dedicated energetic men and deserveour recognition and thanks. Our Coaches and Managers; Matt Smith, Greg Forbes, Paul Nixon, DaveHenschell, Andre Antony and Brian Williams were all critical to ensuring great efforts by the Wolves.

2015 shows great promise for the club. The juniors who have had high level senior playing experience in2014 will continue to blossom and there are a number of possible acquisitions which may bolster our playingnumbers and strength. Bring it on!

Ladies’ ReportWelcome again to that point, where we look back on our season and celebrate what a truly great Club KedronWavell is. Just like a real wolf pack, Kedron Wavell is a tight knit community, bound not only by family unitsbut by ties of affection and mutual aid, adopting members who can offer great skill to the pack.

I’d like to open this year by acknowledging all those people who make a Club like this tick. Thank you to ourcoaches – Nikki, Andrew, Ian, Ken, Pam, Elaine and Kim, who give their time, their knowledge and theirexpertise all season to help us grow and develop as players.

Thank you to Christine Blanchard for her administrative prowess and expertise in navigating the black arts ofBWHA and to Fiona Taylor for her amazing skill as Keeper of Coin.

Thank you to those who pick up a whistle and umpire. There aren’t by far enough of us willing to take on thisvery important role.

Thank you to each of you who coached a junior team, encouraging our senior players of the future.

Thanks for the canteen duties full of hot chips and hamburgers, thank you for selling raffle tickets, for selling,ok and buying and consuming fundraising chocolates.

Thank you for every minute that you find in your busy life not just to turn up and play but to actually give backto your club, to your pack. So many things happen off the field that make a hockey club like this tick and hum.

And without those of you who answer that call, who choose to find the extra time, lend the extra hand, takethe extra shift we couldn’t be the great club, the great pack that we are.

So when the call comes out, and it will, for management committee, coaches, umpires and alike, please askyourself if you can find the time to give back to your club, to help your hockey community, your hockey family, your wolf pack.

In 2014, with four teams on the Turf in Divisions 1, 2, 3 and 4, four teams on the grass in DP1, 2, 4 and 5 anda somewhat noteworthy Masters 2 team (I’ll get to them a bit later), six of those teams made finals this year.A great year for the Ladies Section.

Our Division 1 team has had back to back years of which to be proud. In pre-season, they became back toback Tiger Turf Cup winners. After securing Kedron Wavell’s name on the Minor Premier’s, Taxation Shieldlast year for the very first time, just to be sure they thought they’d better back to back that one too. Not to beoutdone, Coach Nikki Taylor also secured her name again on the BWHA Jan Hadfield Shield for HighestCoaching Honours. While a grand final eluded us this year, this team still has much of which to be proud.

The BWHA Pam Glossop Shield for Highest Representative Honours will also spend another year at KedronWavell, this year being awarded to Audrey Smith for her Australian Juniors selection. Congratulations also toMorgan Gallagher - recipient of this year’s BWHA Shirley Otto Shield for Rookie of the Year.

Congratulations to our Division 2 and Division 3 teams for both finishing 4 th in their respective competitions.I’d also like to take the time to acknowledge Division 4 making it through the season, with low numbers andinjuries, this team did to tough this year, but still managed to put a team on the field each week and play ashard as they could.

Congratulations to DP1 who through an inconsistent season, managed to do one better than last year andfinish third. To DP2, the little engine that could, for while not having a ladder spot worth reporting, theyshowed each week what being a team is all about. Mighty DP4 finished 3rd this year, with Kate Oudenrynbeing awarded BWHA’s Best and Fairest for DP4. Congratulations Kate. And to DP5, the team that mightlack in wins but certainly have enthusiasm and humour in spades.

Great season all.

So that’s all our 2014 Ladies Teams covered, except that one little Monday Masters 2 team full of old chookswho eat too many lollies at half time and often complain about the cold. It’s ok, I can say that, coz I’m one of

Page 10: KEDRON WAVELL SERVICES€¦ · in the plan – despite significant pressures for other developments. Our Principal Club Sponsor 2014 was the third year of our new sponsorship arrangements

them. You see when the season opened in March with a mixed Masters 1 and Masters 2 competition, no one, least of all them, expected to make finals. Then the competition split the playing field got a bit more even andthe wins started to come. And after beating the same Commercial team three times in four weeks to makethe Grand Final, while hopeful, the majority expected Minor Premiers Redlands to win.

But on a chilly Monday night at the State Hockey Centre just a few weeks ago an amazing thinghappened….after being drawn nil all at half time, KateO popped a goal in the corner (followed by thecustomary heel click of course) and the well renowned Kedron Wavell defensive skill, anchored by AustralianMasters Goal Keeper, Belle Davis, held Redlands out for the rest of the game. As an added bonus, AllisonDewar, belovedly known to us as Mary, was awarded BWHA Best and Fairest of the Grand Final.

Junior Boys’ ReportIn 2014 the junior boys’ section fielded seven teams: J1, J2, U11, U13, 2 x U9 and U7. This year we wereable to field a J1 team which was a result of hard work by the section in previous years. This team finished asolid 5th and coming years are looking good for boys’ hockey.

A particular achievement of note was the winning of the Brisbane Hockey Association Stan Griffin Shield forthe best junior boys club in the Association. Our club has not won this award since 1986 so it has been a longtime coming again.

Once again, the Junior Boys’ section recognises the work of Michelle Weekes in driving the Hook into Hockeyprogram that is so successful in bringing new members to both our Club and the sport of hockey. In 2014, ofthe 82 boys and girls who took part in the Hook into Hockey program, 55 signed up for the season. That’s asuccess rate of almost 70% and a great opportunity to promote our sport. Hook into Hockey was pivotal inKedron Wavell being awarded the very first Club of the Month by Hockey Australia, bringing with it a greatdeal of publicity and exposure for our club.

In August the Junior Boys Vice President and Secretary, Stewart Fleming and Kylie Fuller, resigned. TheClub thanks both Stewart and Kylie for their efforts in previous years in building the boys’ section.

Junior Girls’ Report2014 saw Kedron Wavell Girls register fourteen teams in the BWHA competition: an increase of four teamsfrom the previous season. This increase in player numbers and teams registered in the BWHA competition isa positive result for the club and is due largely to the dedicated efforts of Michelle Weekes and the “Hook intoHockey” program. Through Michelle’s efforts Kedron Wavell Services Hockey Club was awarded the veryfirst “Club of the Month” by Hockey Australia, bringing with it a great deal of positive publicity and exposure forour club.

On the field our JT1 girls took out the minor premiership and were overall premiers winning a very excitingand action packed extra time grand final. Our U11C girls finished second at the end of the fixture rounds andwent on to draw the grand final which placed them in overall second position. Of the remaining twelve juniorgirl’s teams, five others finished in the top three in their respective divisions whilst all others finished theseason strongly.

To give you a rundown of each team:

Junior turf and grass - thank you to Bec Kirchner, Darren Smith, Abbey Hawker, Lee Hillas, KenDohnt and Eleanore Mason who took the time to coach each of these teams. Congratulations to all ofyou for maintaining enthusiasm in the players whilst instilling some great skills.

Under 11s - thank you to Jacqui McGrory and Tracey Sullivan for their dedicated efforts coaching thisseason.

Under 11s - thank you to Pam Pattison, Cindy Johnson and Alissa Hickson for coaching our Under11s this season. The girls enjoyed their season and were able to lay some very positive foundationsfor the future years successes of our club with these coaches.

Under 9s and Under 7s –thank you to Karen and Brendan Downes, Dion Harrison, Joe Ross, KimAbbott and Paul Di Tullio for their commitment and passion coaching our future up and comingchampions.

This year, many of our girls trialed for representative selection in the different age groups. Congratulations toall who were successful and I encourage all players to continue to seek representative honours in the future.

In particular I would like to acknowledge and thank the effort and support of our Ladies Club Captain RebeccaKirchner. Rebecca has for a number of years now supported the individual player development of our juniorgirls through her skills coaching.

Managers are invaluable in assisting coaches to ensure that the team dynamics run smoothly. We arefortunate that individual parents within each team put their hand up to coordinate canteen rosters, umpiring, game times, photo’s, fundraising etc. Your efforts are sincerely appreciated.

To the parents, thank you for your commitment to our club. This year was a little different to others as we hadto do canteen and raffle rosters. It is appreciated that this ran smoothly and was coordinated primarily by theteam managers.

As always there are a number of people within our club that deserve individual recognition for their efforts andcontributions to the season.

Christine Carr coordinated the umpiring roster this year and she was invaluable in ensuring our commitmentto BWHA was fulfilled. Thank you goes to Chris, the girls and their parents for willingly completing theirumpiring duties.

Kaaren Lane and Fiona Taylor who for a number of years now have been our junior boys/girls and clubtreasurers. It is through their efforts and assistance that enables our player fees to be kept as low aspossible.

Page 13: KEDRON WAVELL SERVICES€¦ · in the plan – despite significant pressures for other developments. Our Principal Club Sponsor 2014 was the third year of our new sponsorship arrangements

Lisa Newbold and Shirley Woodward mid–season undertook to re-establish and run the sausage sizzle ontraining nights. Your efforts and commitment on a cold winter’s night were very much appreciated by all.

Finally a very big thank you to Natasha Gaddes, our junior girls secretary for her wonderful assistance inkeeping our club functioning whether it be her tenacious efforts to ensure our girls were attired in the correctuniform, coordinating fundraising efforts across the junior girls section, attending BWHA monthly meetings, coordinating player registrations and team selection trials or just her wavering efforts ensuring that the juniorgirls section ran smoothly. Natasha’s contribution to the success of your daughter’s hockey this seasoncannot be understated and I would like to personally acknowledge and thank her for the support that she hasprovided our club.

I am sure that there are many other parents and supporters that have contributed in some way throughout theseason, to you all a big thank you for the Junior Girls Committee.

As you can see it is the effort of many individuals working as a group that makes our season so successfuland enjoyable for our daughters.

In closing I would like to acknowledge all of the older girls who, by age, have played their last game of juniorgirl’s hockey, proudly for Kedron Wavell Services Hockey Club. These young ladies are moving up into thesenior ladies section: thanks for your commitment to the development of our junior girls section and keepplaying and enjoying your hockey.
