Selection process
A set of 13 candidate papers assembled by KDD PCs SPC nomination for best paper candidacy High reviewer ranking
 9 papers were “student papers”
Best paper committee conducted an extensive review of the candidates Original reviews/scores were withheld
30
Finalists
Best paper committee reached a short list of seven finalists Each finalist was voted as suitable to be “best paper” by at least
one committee member Six (out of seven) finalists were student papers! Let’s give a honorable mention to the runner-ups!

38
Best Research Paper: Technical Contribution
“Good combination of theory ideas and
engineering ideas and a solid
evaluation for a very relevant problem”
“addresses a central task that is
specifically a KDD task. Impressive
results on large data”
“can be proved really useful to the community on a wide spectrum of problems”
39
Best Research Paper: Technical Contribution
Large Linear Classification When
Data Cannot Fit In Memory
Hsiang-Fu Yu,
Cho-Jui Hsieh,
Kai-Wei Chang,
and Chih-Jen Lin
National Taiwan University
The paper describes linear classification by a block minimization method for data larger than the memory size. Effectiveness is shown through experiments, and also by proving the theoretical convergence of the method.
40
Best Research Paper: Innovative Contribution
“Novel task, interesting algorithms,
good experiments”
“a difficult problem and the authors
have made significant progress in
providing a principled framework ”“A pleasure to read”
“A cool application… very novel and well written”
Unanimously liked by all committee members!
41
Best Research Paper: Innovative Contribution
Connecting the Dots Between
News Articles
Dafna Shahaf,
and Carlos Guestrin
Carnegie Mellon University
Given two news articles, the paper shows how to automatically link them together through a coherent chain of news articles. For example, it can recover the chain of events starting with the decline of home prices (January 2007), and ending with the ongoing health-care debate.
