The Diocese of Thuckalay was erected by the papal Bull “Apud Indorum” on November 11, 1996. It was erected separating the area of the Archdiocese of Changanacherry that extended over to the state of Tamilnadu. The then Vicar General of the Archdiocese of Changanacherry Fr. George Alencherry was appointed the first bishop of the new Eparchy. The establishment of the diocese and the appointment of the first Bishop were promulgated on December 18, 1996. Very Rev. Fr. George Alencherry was ordained Bishop on February 2, 1997. He became the Major Archbishop of the Syro Malabar Church in the year 2011. The present bishop of the diocese is Mar George Rajendran sdb and his Episcopal Ordination and Installation was on 16th September 2012. The total number of the catholic faithful in the diocese is 30,000.

Location of the Eparchial Centre

Thuckalay, the eparchial centre is erstwhile capital of the Thiruvithamcore state, in the muncipal town of Padmanabhapuram 55 k.m. south of the international Airport Thiruvananthapuram (capital of the state of Keralam), and 35 k.m. northwest of Kanyakumari southern, tip of India.

Area of the Eparchy

This diocese is granted jurisdiction over the whole Kanyakumari District and the Taluk of Shenkottai of Tirunelveli District. Total area will come to 1793.94 sq. kms. Kanyakumari is the southernmost part of India. This District was formerly a part of Thirukkochi State. A few years back it was separated from Kerala and added to Tamilnadu State. The language of this place is Tamil. Some do speak Malayalam also. The Diocese has its Liturgy in Tamil language. There are a few historically important places in this District:

Padmanabhapuram: Erstwhile capital of Venad (later Thiruvithamcore). The palace of the king built here is a very magnificent one attracting many a tourist. The fort surrounding this palace too is worth seeing.

It is prominent due to the tombs of Dutch Admiral E. De Lannoy and his family. He was caught as a prisoner in the battle between Dutch soldiers and the military of Thiruvitham-core. Later he became the Commandant of Thiruvithamcore Army. He was instrumental in the conversion of a Hindu soldier namely Devasahayampillai whose martyrdom was renowned with miracles. He belonged to this District. The process of his beatification is on progress.

A church believed as founded by St. Thomas the Apostle at Thiruvithamcode. It is believed that St. Thomas the Apostle of India had founded ‘seven and a half’ churches in India (Keralam) and the one at Thiruvithamcode is the half church. Presently this is an Orthodox Church.

This place is near Aralvaimozhy. Devasahay-ampillai died a martyr here. Here electricity - producing windmills are installed.

Colechal :

Kanyakumari :

This was a port town. The battle between Thiruvithamcore and Dutch military took place here. In this battle De Lannoy was defeated and caught a captive.

This place is specially noted for the confluence of three seas namely the Arabian Sea, Indian Ocean and Bay of Bengal. It is a very popular tourist centre.


History of the Diocese of Thuckalay On April 29, 1955 the Holy Father Pius XII by the Bull “Multorum Fidelium” extended the territory of the Diocese of Changanacherry beyond the river Pamba in Kerala up to Kanyakumari, the southernmost boundary of India. Then onwards the Bishop of Changanacherry sent priests to be pastors of the Syro-Malabar faithful who has settled in different parts of the extended area. Among the parishes and mission stations instituted by these priests, there were the five Catholic communities of Arukani, Pathukani, Netta, Penu and Anamukham in the district of Kanyakumari. The faithful of these communities were mainly Syro-Malabar Catholics who had migrated from Central Keralam.

From 1960 onwards priests from the Archdiocese of Chan-ganacherry started mission work in the area of the Kanyakumari District. As a result of this missionary work people by and large got converted to Catholic faith. The missionaries trained them in Syro-Malabar Liturgy and spirituality and by which it developed into parishes and mission stations mainly in the Vilavancode and Kalkulam Taluks in Kanyakumari District.

From 1967 onwards the priests from the Congregation of Mary Immaculate (C.M.I.) also joined the Syro-Malabar mission work in Kanyakumari District. Religious Sisters came forward together with the Diocesan and C.M.I priests to start convents and auxiliary mission service. Their service dates back to 1965 when a convent of the Sacred Heart Sisters was founded at Manjalummood, which was later, shifted to Mukkoottukal.

The Bishops who have contributed to the mission work in Kanyakumari District up to the formation of the diocese are Archbishop Mar Mathew Kavukatt, Archbishop Mar Antony Padiyara and Archbishop Mar Joseph Powathil.

Shenkottai Mission When Kanyakumari District remained a mission territory under the Archdiocese of Changanacherry no mission work was taken up in the Taluk of Shenkottai in the District of Tirunelveli, although it was also part of the extended territory of the Archdiocese. As an exception one can say that a house of the Missionary Congregation of the Blessed Sacrament (M.C.B.S.) was established there just one year (two years) before the inauguration of the Thuckalay Diocese.

In 1997 the Bishop sent Very Rev. Fr. Thomas Muttathukunnel (Protosyncellus), Very Rev. Fr. Philip Kodiyanthara, and Very Rev. Fr. Philip Vaikkathukaran to Shenkottai as explorers to find out the possibilities of the mission work in that area. As the team suggested, the Bishop sent two priests – Rev. Fr. Mathew Kuzhinjalil and Rev. Fr. Peter Kizhakkeyil - to Shenkottai.

Shenkottai is 160 kilometers away from Thuckalay. On August 10, 1997 Fr. Mathew Kuzhinjalil started his work in a rented house at Puliyarai. This village is 8 kilometers away from the town. On September 5th of the same year Fr. Peter Kizhakkeyil joined him for mission work. He too lived with Fr. Mathew Kuzhinjalil.

On 30th of January 1999 first baptism was administered to a grown up lady. Some Catholic families also are here. Now seven priests are working in the area, three diocesan priests and four MCBS priests. There are five mission stations in Shenkottai Region.

PRESBYTERIUM in the Place of PRESBYTERAL COUNCIL

At the inception of the diocese there were only 27 priests working in the diocese. Gradually more priests joined us and there are now altogether 72 priests working in the different missionary and pastoral responsibilities of the diocese. Among them 36 priests are incardinated to the diocese. Others are priests from other dioceses (10) and different religious congregations (26), serving the diocese on a term basis.

Priests of the Diocese As the number of priests is so limited we have not yet instituted the presbyteral council for the diocese. Instead the whole presbyterium is consulted on matters that are to be subjected to the consultation of the presbyteral council as per the law of the church. This consultation is done usually during the meetings of the priests for monthly recollection.

Pastoral Council The Forth Pastoral Council of the diocese was formed on October 31, 2013 with 55 members of whom are lay persons. The Pastoral Council as a rule meets three times a year and also on occasions of urgency.

Parish Council From the year 2000 onwards we have instituted the parish councils in our churches according to the particular law of the Syro-Malabar Church. In every parish there are two bodies of the parish council namely Pothumantram and the Prathinithimantram. In two years time this administrative system has been introduced in almost all the parishes of the diocese except a few conducted by the CMI Fathers. The functioning of the parish council has enhanced the cooperation of the faithful in the pastoral and missionary activities of the diocese.

THE MASS FOR THE PEOPLE (MISA PRO POPULO) In conformity with the canon 294 of CCEO all parish priests / priests-in-charge in the Diocese are hereby directed to apply at least ten Masses for the people every year, the following feasts are indicated for the purpose. Priests having more than one parish need to offer only ten masses. As per the direction from the Diocese the priest has to offer five masses for the people in a year. 1. Feast of Immaculate Conception 2. Christmas 3. Denha 4. Feast of St. Joseph (March 19 or May 1) 5. Easter 6. Ascension 7. Pentacoste 8. St. Thomas the Apostle 9. Our Lady’s Assumption 10. Feast of Holy Eucharist Mass for the people means, no stipend can be received for these ten masses. Bination mass cannot be counted for the fulfillment of this obligation.

The Syro-Malabar Church Traces its Origin to St. Thomas The Apostle, who, according to tradition, came to India in 52AD. Its members are called St. Thomas Christians. It is one of the four Oriental Churches having in common the East Syrian Liturgical tradition.. The others are those of Edessa, Seleucia-Ctesiphon and Persia. On accounts of this common heritage the Syro-Malabar Church continued its hierarchical relations with the Chaldean Church under the Catholicate of Seleucia-Ctesiphon.

In the 16th century the portuguese came to India and the Latin mis-sionaries, suspecting the St. Thomas Christian of heresy, started lati-nizing them. Hierarchically they were brought under the rule of the Latin Bishops.

In 1653, in the famous ‘Coonan Cross Declaration’ at Mattanchery, the St. Thomas Christians took the oath not to obey the ruling Latin Bishop. This was the starting point of division among the Christians who were one Church till that time. Further events led to the fact that many of them came back to the jurisdiction of the Latin rule to

be in communion with the Pope while others stood firm in their stand of opposition to the Portuguese. Eventually those who continued under the Latin rule formed the community, which we now call the Syro-Malabar Church. Those who remained opposing the Portuguese tried to have Bishop from the Oriental Churches. They came into contact with the Jacobite Patriarch and eventually became Jacobites, of which a fraction was reunited to the Catholic Communion in 1930 and is now know as the Syro-Malankara Church. After 230 years of Latin rule the Syro-Malabar Hierarchy was established in India.

As the Code of Canons of the Eastern Churches was Promulgated in 1990, it became necessary to rectify the anomaly in the structure of our Church. Thus, on 16th December 1992 Pope John Paul II raised the Syro-Malabar Church to the status of a Major Archiepiscopal Sui Juris Church with the title of Ernakulam-Angamaly. The powers of the Major Archbishop were given temporarily to Mar Abraham Kattumana, a special delegate of the Roman Pontiff.

When Archbishop Abraham Kattumana expired in 1995 the powers of the Major Archbishop were given to Mar Antony Cardinal Padiyara, the Metrapolitan of Ernakulam. WhenMajor Achbishop Padiyara resigned Mar Varkey Vithayathil CSSR was appointed Apostolic Administrator of Ernakulam-Angamaly for the Syro-Malabar Church on January 18, 1997. Then on January 26, 2000, Mar Varkey Vithayathil was installed as Major Archbishop. Then on 21st January 2001 His Beatitude Mar Varkey Vithayathil was raised to the status of Cardinal.

Mar George Alencherry was elected the Major Archbishop on May 26, 2011 and made Cardinal on February 18, 2012.
