than burning a mountain of DVD discs to browse their media files.

Searching for a better way to manage their content, they turned to their facility’s media storage provider XOR Media and their integrated Arkki MAM application. Arkki is a simple and innovative media manager application that enables content providers to create and browse a proxy file from anywhere on the web. Arkki is cost effective and easy to deploy, running directly on the XOR Media Universal MediaLibary (UML) storage near-line archive system.

The installation of Arkki in KCET was completed at a most crucial time – just as they were readying for the production of their 50th anniversary special.

The challengeThe primary objective of implementing Arkki in KCET is to simplify the program review process. For years, KCET relied on burning programs and promos on thousands of DVDs routed across KCET to various departments and executives. It was a lengthy and tedious process. For the 50th anniversary show, using DVDs for the review process would be nothing short of a nightmare. With Arkki, the process was simplified and made efficient.

The setupKCET’s massive program content is stored on three XOR Universal MediaLibraries (UML). UML 1 serves as shared storage for the XOR MediaClient (MCL) codecs that ingest and play-out programming for the facility’s main channels. Content stored on UML1 not ingested via the MCLs is transferred as an XDCAM HD file from their AVID editing

Through innovation, KCET continues to strengthen its position in the television industry. environment. Files from UML1 are copied to UML 2 via the XOR Mirror Tool providing backup for play-to-air as well as near-line storage. Together, they store up to 165TB.

Arkki is installed in UML3, where it creates the low-resolution proxy file and stores it for future browsing. The application runs directly on the UML’s active-active storage controllers, the entire setup benefitting from load balancing and failover.

The workflowA user that needs to review content sends a request to the broadcast operations group. Every promo or show is assigned a unique clip identification number by the Myers ProTrack traffic system. The broadcast operator uses this ID in Arkki’s web GUI to retrieve the file from UML 2. Arkki transcodes it into a viewing copy, and stores the MP4 proxy file on UML 3. The user is notified when the viewing copy is ready for review from any location with an internet connection.

The resultArkki’s web-based interface, content indexing system, descriptive metadata and built-in high-performance transcoding engine enables conversion of original content into preview formats viewable from anywhere, resulting in a simple and efficient way to review content destined for air.

KCET now uses Arkki for its review process across their enterprise. The programming group uses Arkki as their primary program review tool such as reviewing programs originating from Europe for nudity, language, and captioning. The promotions group, on the other hand, uses Arkki to review content for promo creation. The legal department is tasked with reviewing content for copyright infringement. KCET executives preview new shows via Arkki in the office or at any remote location.

Far beyond reducing clutter on everyone's desk, Arkki has effectively streamlined the entire programming review process at KCET, cutting down the time, resources, and patience required of the legacy DVD process. It has improved the overall operations of the programming and promotions departments, making it easier for both staff and executives to focus on the more important objective of the review process: producing excellent content.

Arkki is also very simple to use. All broadcast operators have been trained to use Arkki to generate

content for review while reviewers have also found it very easy to use, simply logging in to Arkki’s web-based interface and browsing programs very similar to viewing content on YouTube™ or other video sharing websites.

“Arkki connects and collaborates well with our robust IT-based broadcast

infrastructure,” says Senior Vice President Gordon Bell. “Because of this, Arkki not only pays for itself by enabling operational efficiency, it also enhances our investment in the entire media workflow making it faster and more intuitive. I look forward to what MediaPower and XOR Media have in store for our 75th anniversary.”
