The Presidential Podium August 2003

There is good news and bad news to report to the club.

The bad news is that "Mac" WØCW is a silent key. Mac was an original member of

the Kansas City DX Club and a Dxer and Dxpeditioner in his own right. I believe I am

richer for having known Mac and I will miss his "well hello Lee Ward" whenever I

talked to him.

The good news is that as of the 4th of August 2003 the Kansas City DX Club call is

WØCW. This is a great honor for the club to hold this call and we should use it as

often as possible to honor Mac.

The trustee for the club call is Frank Paxton, NGØN. Frank is an old friend of Mac’s

and is still close to the family. It was Mac’s desire that Frank be the trustee for the

club and we have honored his wishes.

Frank took care of the entire process of

obtaining the first club call and followed

through with the acquisition of WØCW

for the club. I want to thank Frank for

his efforts in support of the club. To use

the club call coordinate with Frank at

816-361-6194 or

[email protected] .

OVERHEARD IN KB0U’SSHACK

ANNUAL SUMMER MEETINGOF KANSAS DX & POETRYSOCIETY BY WD0SRI The annual Summer meeting of the Kansas DX& Poetry Society was held on July 18th inManhattan at the Chip Kicker’s Bar & Grill. Manymembers met at the I-70 exit at 6 PM and rodeinto Manhattan in a long caravan of pickups andRV’s. The group stopped at the Bill SnyderMemorial Bridge for brief a prayer for the footballteam and then sang a rousing chorus of “EveryMan’s a Wildcat”. Even though a few KDX&PSmembers abstained from singing (Grads from ontop of Mt. Oread and other god forsaken placeslike MU) it was a stirring moment for the group. The Chip Kickers Bar & Grill proved to begracious hosts as they had their Corral (meetingroom) set up for our program. They providedcomplimentary cans of Skoal for members whochose the smokeless option. The KDX&PSPresident K0ZM, Tom, began the meeting byreminding members that the Society was not

responsible for bail or damages of individuals. Themembers roared their approval by popping a topin unison. Members with drafts merely belchedloudly. President Tom announced that Hurling forDollars was no longer a sanctioned Society activity.Informal hurling contests in the parking lot ofAggieville were now up to individual members.

The President closed the business section of themeeting and kicked off the Limerick Contest byreading a few classic verses from our mentor RodNewkirk. “Old Crud Boy McGee” brought thecrowd to their feet. Many old timers stood withheads bowed and Kenwood caps over their heartsin tribute to the master of rhyme, W9BRD.

One older member of the KDX&PS said loudly“They don’t make Dxers and poets like Rodanymore!” Another old timer said “Yeah! Rod wasthe main source of DX news for years in the How’sDX column, but oh, the man had a way withwords!”

Unfortunately, a few of the younger membersbelched loudly at this point, in disrespect. AnHonor Roll member said “Surely they must havematriculated at M.U.!”

Nevertheless, the President started thecompetition by asking 13 time winner of the annualLimerick Contest, your Editor, AB0X, to stand andrecite a classic that won the event back in 1989.

He began just as he does on 20 meters bywhistling into the PA and saying hola a few timesto get their attention. Then a pearl spewed forth...

“The contester from East Dubuque,

Received great personal rebuke!

He called out of turn,

And was often spurned,

But was mostly told “You are a dupe!”

Some of the KCDXC boys clapped loudly andslapped each other on the back in tribute to thisGolden Oldie form their Editor-in- Chief. Othersjust belched loudly while some lifted their legs andadded great quantities of Methane to theatmosphere. One Dxer said “Aw, they are justmaking UHFers, don’t pay any attention to them!”

Yet, the competitors this evening knew they hada real challenge ahead as no one had beat the oldgray haired Editor in years. K0ZM officially

Page 4: KC DX NEWS - QSL.netThe Presidential Podium August 2003 There is good news and bad news to report to the club. The bad news is that "Mac" WØCW is a silent key. Mac was an original

opened the competition. Tom declared “Gentlemen,Start your Limericks!”

The first poet Dxer came to the mike and rathershyly he recited a verse on Dxpeditions:

Don’t you love those traffic cops,

On a new one they do plop.

Giving smart retorts,

Coverin’ my reports,

Their helpfulness needs to stop!

The sound of 807 cans opening in unison washeard all around the room in recognition to theexcellent limerick. It was a good one but not awinner. The Applause& Belch Meter just movedslightly to the right. But, there were several moreto present their poetry. The next contestant whomade his way to the stage bore a strikingresemblence to KR0CK, Harvey(ex N0LID). Histopic was the recent restructure of ham licensing. He began quietly:

Jim Bob, a new extra class,

Studied for months to pass.

I got little rest,

To pass the damn test,

And now the Feds tricked my ass!

A couple of VHF, Novice Tech, no code creeps, cheered for Harvey’s effort. But to the crowd ofalmost all Extra class Dxers, there was little humorin the verse. Some even stood and threw 807bottles at the stage. The Sgt. Of Arms quicklyrestored order.

Finally the crowd settled down and the nextcontestant came up. He wore a red flannel shirtwith a rather high waist line. Some said he camefrom a low rent urban area of Kansas. NX0I yelledat the old poet from the crowd “Hey, Johnny, don’t your nipples rub on your belt?”

It looked like this ham had a few sunspots cyclesunder his high belt. He recited:

Old timer Harley McGee,

Worked the last one with glee!

Well, I guess I’m done,

It has been great fun,

Now what’ll happen to me???

The Social Security crowd, who was a strongcontingent, whistled and stomped in response to theverse. “Yeah!” one old timer said. “We need somenew countries to work!” The younger crowd onlyshook their heads in pity. Yet, the majority ofKDX&PS is made up of middle aged Dxers, andthey could empathize with the emotions of both.

Finally the pops stopped popping and everyonesat down again for the next contestant, who wasfrom the same retired groups of Dxers. He beganslowly:

Don’t like this new D-S-P!

Old timer Ralphie decreed.

It seems like a must,

But hard to adjust,

Can somebody please help me!

The Social Security crowd stomped and slappedbacks loudly in agreement! One old timer saidloudly “DSP stands for Dumb, Stupid Product!”Even a few of the middle aged boys chimed in withthe crowd. The applause was good but it wasn’t awinner according to the KDXP&S Applause andBelch Meter.

The next contestant in the Limerick Contestwas another QCWA member Poet. His bald headwas evident as a shine reflected off his head fromthe lights.

One Dxer said loudly “ He’s either an old Fartor he has a Godzilla Amp at home.” This remindedthe crowd of Godzilla products disclaimer in mostamplifier ads and caused the crowd to laugh loudly.

The contestant waited for the din to die downbefore he began his verse:

The old DXer named Jake,

Loved his boat anchors named Drake

The C line was grand,

But required a fan,

Or else he’d have Shake N’ Bake.

“Yeah!” one old tube man yelled, “Real radiosstill glow in the dark” another said. The applauseslowly rose to a point that it was obvious that thisbit of verse was quite good and in the competitionfor the big silver trophy.

The next contestant who came to the mikesnapped to attention and proudly saluted the crowdbefore he began. It was obvious he had come from

Page 5: KC DX NEWS - QSL.netThe Presidential Podium August 2003 There is good news and bad news to report to the club. The bad news is that "Mac" WØCW is a silent key. Mac was an original

a rural area and had a military background. Herecited:

The sad old ham from Wetmore,

Said “Oh, my the band is poor!”

“No antenna works,”

Said With a big smurk!

“Guess I’ll load up the screen door!”

The crowd jumped to their feet and the clappingwas overwhelming! The old Applause & BelchMeter went to the right like AB0I’s watt meterused to do on contest days! The crowd belched in3 part harmony. It was obvious that it would takea real pearl to win this year’s competition.

The next competitor who came up to the mikewas a large, rotund man. An old timer from thecrowd was overheard to say “Is that Tommy Baughup there?” His old QCWA friend said “No,Tommy is much better looking than this guy, plushe has hair.” However, many of the KCDXCgroups began whistling and stomping their feet.Several yelled out “El Presidente! Our Leader!LW! Kay Zero Limp Winnie!”

The contestant recited even though the whistles hadnot all stopped:

At the DX Club meeting,

“I slept thru the proceedings,”

“So, I got elected,

“It left me dejected,”

“If only I’d been listening!”

The local KCDXC boys cheered loudly andscreamed “He’s a Lifer! But he’s ours!” One ole’timer asked his friend “What did he say?” Hisbuddy said “He said don’t ever sleep at a clubmeeting.”

“Oh, yeah, but he’s got a peculiar approach toeverything,” advised the ole’ timer.

The next to last contestant rose to the stage. He was a radical DXer who still questioned theDXAC on occasion and enjoyed throwing jabs atthe ARRL and their “fair haired boys”. He hadobviuosly worked the first Pratas DXpedition thathad been disallowed by the DXAC. Their “MainMan” goes to the same spot as the first group andit counts. In the words of Ricky Ricardo he said“Can somebody splain it to me?” His verse had amessage and he needed to be heard:

The damn League deleted my reef!

Screamed DXer Ralph in grief.

If Martti went there,

Then nobody would care,

He moaned in sheer disbelief!

The old KDXP&S Applause & Belch Meterwas nearly pegged by the response from thecrowd. A couple of the members who had actuallygone on some DXpeditions cried out “How do weget to be a Fair Haired Boy?” Much bottle clinkingand back slapping followed.

The next contestant to recite was a white hairedgentleman who looked like he had tipped a few atthe Hospitality Suite in Dayton over the years. Itwas evident that he had brought his own crowd ofsupporters who could belch, fart and whistle withthe best of them!

He cleared his throat and began:

Old Rick said his hair turned white,

Because of long contest nights,

“That big tube did buzz,”

“See what RF does!”

“That Godzilla ‘s got a bite!”

The crowd exploded like a plate choke in themiddle of a pile up! Almost everyone there had hadsome experience with excessive RF. One Dxeryelled loudly “Rick should’ve got a lead lined ballcap.” Another said “Yeah, but at least he’s notlike K0ZM, bald and sterile !”

Another Dxer yelled out “Free Vasectomies byGodzilla!” The whistling and belching must havelasted at least a minute. The ovation was so loudthat when the Belch & Applause Meter hit the pegit bent the needle! It was obvious it would take areally good limerick to beat this one!

The final contestant was the defending champ,AB0X. As he came to the stage, he waved to hissupporters over with the KCDXC group. A few

belched loudly and whistled. One who looked likeK0XM pleaded with Mike to “Pull his Finger!”Luckily, he avoided the explosion, and said “No,we have too many UHFers already!”

This comment made the crowd laugh andstomp even harder! In fact, the manager of the ChipKickers Bar & Grill looked a little worried that thecrowd might tear up the Corral.

Page 6: KC DX NEWS - QSL.netThe Presidential Podium August 2003 There is good news and bad news to report to the club. The bad news is that "Mac" WØCW is a silent key. Mac was an original

Before he began reciting the old pro pulled outa handkerchief and faked like he was blowing hisnose. The crowd looked puzzled and a hushcrossed the room:

The Contester from Saint Lou,

Let out a giant Ker-Choo!

It was kind of sad,

And looked real bad,

N’ covered his mike with green goo!

The roar was instant! It appeared that many inthe crowd must have had very similar experiencesometime in their ham career because the crowdresponded with bodacious applause, whistles, belching and foot stomping! The KDX&PSApplause & Belch Meter stayed pegged for over 2minutes solid! President, K0ZM, handed AB0X thesilver trophy for the 13th time in a row despite theraucous crowd.

One old timer, with a tooth pick in his mouthsaid of AB0X, “ Aw, he thinks he’s great, but aNewkirk he ain’t!”

This comment fell on deaf ears though, asAB0X said “Such is the life of a Dxer Poet! NoRespect!”

MANY DXERS ATTEND ARRLNATIONAL CONVENTION:JUNE 20

IN BIG “D” by AB0X

The annual HamCom Convention held inArlington, TX, was host this year to the ARRLNational Convention. The good ‘ole boys reallyturned out in force this year as the ConventionCenter next the Rangers Ball Park was packed theentire weekend.

Many U.S. and foreign Dxers attended this year. The Lone Star DX Association sponsored the DXprogram and did an outstanding job! There wasalmost non-stop DX programing going the entire 3days of the Convention. Many well known Dxersmade presentations and showed videos of theiroperations to the crowds. Almost all of the famousvideos that Jim Brooks has made for so manyDxpeditions were shown throughout the weekendin the DX conference room just off the main roomof the convention.

The Lone Star DX Association also did a goodjob of obtaining numerous quality door prizes, which included thing a like a 1000 QSL cards, DXsubscriptions, books, videos and various products.Three of the four people in my group, the LanceJohnson Contingency, ended up winning prizes! Even a few copies of DX WAS were given away! One winner, a DXer from New Jersey, was askedif he wanted his copy autographed by the author. He replied “Sure, Asshole! But not you.” ( I believethat KB0U had something to do with his response-AB0X)

The Lone Star DX Association also sponsoredthe real highlight of the DX programing with itsannual DX Luncheon on Saturday, over at theMarriot Hotel next door to the convention Belowis a photo of the DX Luncheon taken by KB0U. Itwas held in one of the adjoining dinning roomscalled the Rainforest.

The program included a fairly good meal for abanquet and an entertaining DXprogram

was a good respite from the Texas heat. The AH3DDX program was shown by several team members.

Below are some photos around the convention:

The annual HamCom Convention is always

They will be a Multi-Multi entry. Charlotte and Paulwill arrive a few days early, set up stations, and starteducating students as they have time. Paul figures they willneed to teach a bit of geography, propagation, operating, contest rules, how to use the contesting software, strategy,pile-up handling, phonetics, etc.... They will have threeradios with them. They will bring extra headphones andsplitters, so they can operate with the students listening andthen swap off and have a student operate while they listen. However, Paul is looking for other "stuff" and some ideas. They don't have enough headsets. Does anyone have a Heilheadset they are interested in selling? This is a goodopportunity to buy a new Proset + and unload your old set. They could also use a stand-alone voice keyer or two.
